As the threat of Tropical Storm Isaias loomed over Newfound, NLRA staff mobilized to gather critical water quality data from the watershed. Collecting water quality data before and after large storm events allows us to track the effects on Newfound, realize areas that are particularly threatened, and develop mitigation plans for future storms.
While the storm was not as severe as originally forecasted, the Atlantic region is projected to see an above average number of hurricanes this year. Testing our monitoring system for preparedness was just as important, this time around, as testing our water.
In summary, water quality in the Cockermouth subwatershed, an area of focus due to previous washouts, did not see heavy impact from the storm. The Lake, however, showed declines in water clarity, likely due to wind and wave action. Read our StormWatch article, linked below, to see our complete findings.

No Crackers for Quackers
Feeding ducks is unhealthy for the ducks, the Lake, and people too!
- Ducks need their natural foods to stay healthy. Bread, crackers, and other human snacks don't have the nutrients they need.
- Bread and other human foods that make it into the Lake decompose and lower our water quality.
-
Ducks that are attracted to beaches and waterfront areas leave behind their excrement, which can contain the parasite that causes swimmer's itch as well as bacteria that can make people sick.
Here's some safe ways to help out our flying friends and keep our lake clean:
- Pick up trash, fishing lures, and fishing line around waterbodies that could entangle and injure or be swallowed by ducks, loons, and other wildlife.
- Install duck nesting boxes for wood ducks.
- Spread the word! Tell your friends and family how they can help ducks and the health of our watershed.
