The House  Focuses on Rolling Back Obama Rules, While the Senate Continues to Vet Trump Picks

The House of Representatives this week will look to use the Congressional Review Act to undo certain Obama administration regulations that were enacted before President Obama left office.  The Congressional Review Act gives Congress the ability to review and overrule new federal regulations issued by government agencies within 60 legislative days of the implementation of the regulation.  The House will consider five resolutions aimed at rolling back such regulations as the Department of Interior's stream protection rule aimed at providing stronger regulations on surface mining to protect clean water and the Securities and Exchange Commission's rule requiring companies to reveal the payments they make to governments as part of their attempts to develop oil, gas and minerals.

The Senate will look to move forward with more of President Trump's cabinet picks.  The President's pick to lead the Department of Transportation, Elaine Chao, is expected to receive a floor vote tomorrow, while the Senate  Energy and Natural Resources Committee plans votes tomorrow on former Texas Gov. Rick Perry's nomination to be Secretary of Energy and Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke to be the Secretary of Interior.

Binational Ecological Risk Assessment of Grass Carp for the Great Lakes Basin Report Released

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) released a report entitled Ecological Risk Assessment of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) for the Great Lakes Basin last Friday.  This report is the result of a binational effort, led by DFO and coordinated with the binational Great Lakes Fishery Commission, to respond to the threat of Grass Carp introduction into the Great Lakes basin.  Grass Carp is one of four species of Asian Carp that can greatly disrupt the Great Lakes ecosystem.  Specifically, the report presents ecological consequences and overall risk of Grass Carp entry, establishment, survival and spread throughout the Great Lakes system.  The report states that Grass Carp have entered and begun to invade the Great Lakes basin, and that immediate preventative actions would be most effective to delay or reduce subsequent ecological consequences.  The full report is available from Fisheries and Oceans Canada here.  For more information, contact Matthew McKenna, Director of the Great Lakes Washington Program or Ankita Mandelia, Policy Analyst for the Towards Sustainable Water Information Program at the Northeast-Midwest Institute.
