Senate Commerce Committee to Markup Coast Guard Authorization and Harmful Algal Bloom Legislation

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will hold an executive session on Thursday, May 18, at 10:00 a.m. to mark up several pieces of legislation, including the 2017 U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) authorization act and a reauthorization of the  Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act (HABHRCA). HABHRCA, which funds research into the causes and behavior of harmful algal blooms, was last reauthorized in 2014 after a toxic harmful algal bloom (HAB) in Lake Erie contaminated the city of Toledo's drinking water, and included language qualifying the  Great Lakes for federal funding for HAB research and monitoring.  The HABHRCA bill that will be considered on Thursday by the Committee was introduced by Senators Bill Nelson (FL), Gary Peters (MI), and Rob Portman (OH).  More details about the markup and a link to the live webcast can be viewed here.
