ntitled
"Fighting for a High Wage America: Reinvesting in Innovation and the Industrial Heartland." The briefing will present concrete proposals to revive high wage jobs for hardworking Americans.

This event will launch the "High Wage America Project," a research and policy program led by The Century Foundation's Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative. It will focus on how to bring high wage work back to America's heartland, through revitalizing manufacturing; positioning America as a global leader in technological innovation; expanding apprenticeship, career, and technical education opportunities; and targeted investments to create high-quality, high-paying jobs.

Capitol Hill Briefing Addresses GLRI 'Success Stories'
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI)'s success stories and impacts, as well as the challenges ahead, were the focus of a Northeast-Midwest Institute briefing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, June 6.

Great Lakes experts highlighted the GLRI's achievements, ranging from the cleanup of toxic areas of concern and habitat restoration to sportsman and recreational issues and wide-ranging economic impacts. At the same time, possible budget cuts or even elimination under the Trump Administration's proposed budget was cited as a major challenge to the Great Lakes' future.

- Chad Lord, Policy Director at the Healing Our Waters Coalition

New Senior Fellow for
Summer 2017 to Focus on
Urban Economics
and Economic Growth
Bringing expertise in urban economics and public finance, Dr. Farideh Farazmand has joined the Northeast-Midwest Institute as a Senior Fellow for summer 2017 as the Institute strengthens its longstanding Revitalizing Older Cities Program.
Announcing the appointment, Dr. Michael J. Goff, President and CEO at NEMWI, stated "Dr. Farideh Farazmand brings impressive expertise and a long record of published research to our work with urban and regional economic policy. We are confident that she is going to contribute rich and insightful perspectives to our policy work as critical legislative proposals relating to cities are considered on Capitol Hill in the months ahead."
In coming to the Northeast-Midwest Institute, Dr. Farazmand stated that she hopes to gain hands-on experience in the practical policy implications of her research. She also hopes that in collaborating with NEMWI, she will gain a broader understanding of these policy implications which will provide a stronger foundation for her future research and projects.
Dr. Farazmand is Director of Graduate Programs and Professor of International Business at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida where she has taught in the Business School since 1999. She has published extensively in the fields of urban economics, public finance, and negotiation styles.

This Week on Capitol Hill
This week EPA Administrator Scott Pruit will testify before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies, while the Senate Appropriations Committee will hear from federal officials from the Departments of Justice, Transportation, State, and Defense. Additionally, the House Financial Services Committee is scheduled to markup legislation reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance Program.
