The Northeast-Midwest Institute's Great Lakes Washington Program will hold a Congressional Briefing entitled
"The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI): Success Stories and the Challenges Ahead."

The briefing will provide Congressional staff and Great Lakes organizations the opportunity to hear directly from Great Lakes stakeholders about some of the achievements that are being made through the GLRI. The briefing will include an overview of the GLRI, success stories through the cleanup of toxic areas of concern and habitat restoration in the Great Lakes, challenges the GLRI faces in the current budget environment, and the economic impacts that the GLRI has had on the region over the last eight years.

NEMWI to Co-Host Congressional Briefing on Manufacturing and Wage Growth

The Northeast-Midwest Institute will co-host a Congressional briefing on June 13, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. in the Capitol Visitor's Center, SVC Room 208-209. The briefing is co-hosted with The Century Foundation, the Steel Valley Authority, and the National Call to Action, and is e ntitled  "Fighting for a High Wage America: Reinvesting in Innovation and the Industrial Heartland." The briefing will present concrete proposals to revive high wage jobs for hardworking Americans.

The event will feature opening remarks by  Senator Bob Casey (PA) and  Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-09).
Other speakers include: 
  • Fred Block, Professor of Sociology, University of California Davis
  • Tom Croft , Executive Director of the Steel Valley Authority, Managing Director, Heartland Capital Strategies (HCS)
  • Amy Goldstein,  award-winning journalist, the Washington Post, and author of " Janesville: An American Story"
  • Madeline Janis , Executive Director, Jobs to Move America
  • Jeff Madrick, acclaimed author and economist, Director of TCF's Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative
  • Andrew Stettner, Senior Fellow, The Century Foundation
  • Representative Timothy Ryan (OH-13)

This event will launch the "High Wage America Project," a research and policy program led by The Century Foundation's Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative. It will focus on how to bring high wage work back to America's heartland, through revitalizing manufacturing; positioning America as a global leader in technological innovation; expanding apprenticeship, career, and technical education opportunities; and targeted investments to create high-quality, high-paying jobs.

A light lunch will be served at this event.
