Pastoral Reflections
Rev. James Lamkin

"Thanksgiving Day is in Seven Weeks"
Hard to believe, isn't it? The Macey's Parade is only 49 days away.   I'm not nearly ready to look above the refrigerator for the Mr. and Mrs. Pilgrim salt and pepper shakers. Yet, here we are; and the day is approaching.
There is so much NOT to be thankful for right now. First, there's presidential politics. Then, there's life/health difficulties among NDBC families, also staffing changes and searches regarding NDBC personnel. Hurricane Matthew is about to hit. Plus, there's the daily tourniquet of Atlanta traffic.
Given the angst of all the above, this coming Sunday's Gospel lesson seems out of place. It is a thanksgiving text: the story of the ten persons who ask Jesus for healing. Ten were cured. Nine of the ten went on their way. One of the ten, only one, returned to give gratitude. But in the gratitude was the greater healing.
David Bell will be preaching Sunday. My hunch is, he will unpack this text in splendid form.
In the meanwhile, live toward this Sunday in appreciation of God's generous gift of life. Since we practice our grief every minute, at least practice your gratitude every day. Perhaps at the end of every least for the next forty-nine days...use the St. Ignatius Examen. Before turning in for the night, think about what you've learned about your growing edges that day. And think about what happened during the day for which you are grateful. Then, go to sleep after you've given both your gratitude and your growing edges to God.
Soon, Macey's balloons will float by. Thanksgiving will be upon us. And starting today, we have seven weeks to practice.
Re-purposing Eleven Surplus Pews
Friday, October 7, 2016 between 8:30 - 4:30 PM
The Facilities Ministry Team has been asked to re-purpose eleven surplus pews that the congregation can no longer utilize, maintain, or store safely. These pews have not been used in the Sanctuary for many years. The wooden pews are of differing sizes and condition and are located in several areas of the Sanctuary building.
Before we list them on 'Used Pews' or make them available to another organization on October 8 , we want to give church members the first opportunity to re-purpose a pew for any personal/historic/spiritual reason. A list of all the available pews, along with their size and current location, is available on the tables near the entrances to the Chapel and Sanctuary. You may also request a list be emailed to you by contacting Liz Harris-Lamkin at .
     1.   A piece of paper is taped to each available pew. Please place your name and date on the paper to reserve it. Additionally, notify Rose Hidlay at .
     2. Moving and transportation will be the member's responsibility, no later than October 7. Keep in mind church office hours for access.
     3.   Lastly, because the pews came at considerable expense to the young NDBC, please make a donation back to the church . Consider flagging it for the Facilities Contingency Fund to help pay for some of the upkeep and repair items for an aging building.
