OMBAC
Signs New Coaching Staff
McKittrick and Lippert Take the Reins for 2011
The Old Mission
Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) Rugby team has named John McKittrick as
its new head coach through the 2012 season. McKittrick brings a
wealth of coaching knowledge to OMBAC as he was the United States
National Sevens coach from 2001-2005 and has most recently been
involved with North Harbour and the Blues.
"OMBAC Rugby is
proud to announce that John McKittrick has agreed to coach the club
for the next two seasons," said OMBAC Rugby Chairman, Bob Watkins.
"We feel fortunate that a man with John's rugby pedigree will be
leading our team and coaching our younger coaches at the lower
grades."
McKittrick will be
responsible for coaching OMBAC's Division I and III teams, "I am
looking forward to the relocation to San Diego and renewing some
fine acquaintances made whilst involved with the USA 7s program,"
said McKittrick. "In the short term the focus will be on getting to
know the players and support staff then putting into place
structures and patterns of play that will compliment the OMBAC
player base. My intention is to grow and develop the club and not
just the one team. I believe in creating an environment that will
challenge and develop players but also be enjoyable at the same
time."
Former OMBAC player
and current United States Eagles captain, Todd Clever, who played
for McKittrick with the US Sevens and in New Zealand, had this to
say about the signing.
"The signing of
John McKittrick is a great step in the right direction for the
club. I have had the pleasure of working with McKitty with the
sevens and in New Zealand at the club and representative levels. He
brought me under his wing and I owe a lot of my success to him as a
coach and as a mentor. His knowledge of the game and his
professionalism that he brings to the table is top class. He
expects a lot from his players and staff and he will get the club
to reach its goals."
Former OMBAC and US
Eagles player, Chris Lippert, who managed the Eagles 7s team when
McKittrick was coach, is also looking forward to working together
again.
"John is an
established coach having worked with top sides in New Zealand and
in the UK with the invitational side, the Penguins," said Lippert,
who will be assisting McKittrick as an OMBAC Forwards Coach. "John
has the added advantage of understanding the US game from his time
as a very successful coach of the US 7s team. I enjoyed my time
working with John and very much look forward to working with him
again here at OMBAC."

Fights Cancer with Movember
OMBAC Rugby Grows a Mustache to Fight Cancer
Family
of OMBAC Rugby,
Over the course of November, the entire OMBAC Rugby Club is
encouraged to change their appearance and the face of men's health
by growing a mustache. The mustache is our ribbon, the means by
which we raise awareness and funds for cancers that affect men.
Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, our commitment
is to grow a mustache for 30 days. Funds raised benefit the
Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG.
If you would like to join the global movement that is changing the
face of men's health, sign up for Movember @ OMBAC Rugby's link: http://us.movember.com/mospace/398290/
In
order to raise money, sign up and send the URL Link above to
family, friends and coworkers asking them to donate to you. You
will be linked to the OMBAC Rugby Team so as a group we will all
benefit from the donations you receive.
Also, we
are the Official Face of the Tilted Kilt MOVEMBER campaign. They will be hosting us for
events throughout the Month. Read on for more information regarding
prostate cancer.
Other than skin cancer, prostate
cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The latest
American Cancer Society estimates for prostate cancer in the United
States are for 2010:
About 217,730 new cases
of prostate cancer will be diagnosed. About 32,050 men will die of
prostate cancer.
About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during
his lifetime. More than 2 million men in the United States who have
been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive
today.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death
in American men, behind only lung cancer. About 1 man in 36 will
die of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer accounts for about 11%
of cancer-related deaths in men.

Dear Legends:
As part of the reinvigoration of OMBAC Rugby, Bill "Chief"
Leversee and myself have organized a monthly OMBAC Rugby
Legends breakfast.
Please note our first event will be TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16th
AT OLD TOWN MEX. Thereafter we will meet once a month,
always the 3rd Tuesday of the month, at a central location for
breakfast and networking with your OMBAC pals. While informal in
scope, we will follow the following format:
-Have each monthly meeting feature a rugby topic of interest.
Potential guest speakers to include Coach McKittrick, previews and
recaps from the team captain, international rugby video highlights,
distinguished Legend presentations, etc.
-There would also be opportunity for each attendee to share
who they are, where they are working, and what they make be looking
for (such as new vendors, new job, new clients, true love,
etc)
-We'll have a fixed menu and set price per person. It will
probably be in the $10-15 per person range
-Each meeting to have informal socializing from 7:30 to 8 am
with breakfast and presentation from 8 to 9 am
-The first gathering will be Tuesday, November 16th, at Old
Town Mex. Please send RSVP by Friday November 12th
Please email at my contact information below and let me know
if you are interested in attending. We are also open to suggestions
on topics and venue requests. For many years OMBAC Rugby played an
important part in our lives. Chief and I are looking forward to
providing a means to bring many of us back together as OMBAC
returns to the forefront of rugby in the US.
Thank you,
Mike & Chief

Legends Side Playing in Vegas
Clark "Hit Man" Bernales is Putting
Legends Team Together
From the desk of Clark Bernales:
Letting you know that we're planning something for Legends to
compete in Old Boys division at LVI/USA 7s next Feb.
It will be the 20th anniversary of the 1991 XVs title winning team
(15th for '96 and 5th for '06). Similar to what we did to
commemorate the 1985 7s team this summer, we are hoping to play in
the tourney and then celebrate the '91 team's honor somewhere in
Vegas. We are in the early planning stages and need to get an idea
of who might be coming.
Please contact Clark if you are interested in playing!
