| 2nd Quarter 2011 |
Dear ,
In a changing and challenging Healthcare market, OrthoHelix is responding to the increasing needs of the provider hospitals and surgery centers, while maintaining intense focus on building the trust of surgeons. We have been able to increase our internal efficiencies to offset the "new" costs associated with the changing environment. We passionately hold onto our culture of accountability and take great pride in developing and delivering products that are innovative. Since our last newsletter, we have launched several new products, increased our field distribution system, and held several, well attended surgeon training programs. We anticipate this growth to continue and look forward to sharing more "good news" with you next quarter.

Company Highlights |
OrthoHelix Surgical Designs, Inc. has been awarded a Third Frontier Grant for the PocketLock™ Technology platform. The EdgeLock Translational Osteotomy Plate for flat foot/high arch correction and the ISO™ Intraosseous Sliding Osteotomy Plate both currently contain PocketLock™ Technology. The $1 million grant will allow OrthoHelix to complete the development of a new design for a plating system for fixation of small bones containing PocketLock™ Technology. Read More.
OrthoHelix was recognized at this year's American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society's Annual Meeting as a sponsor of the Outreach & Education Fund. To read more about the OEF, please visit: www.aofas.org/oef.
OrthoHelix has received FDA clearance to market the new Mini Variable Ankle Locking Screw Option for the Mini MaxLock Extreme System. The plates contain Tribrid™ Technology which can accommodate non-locking, fixed angle locking, and variable angle locking screws. Now surgeons will have all three options in one set and can decide intraoperatively which screw option is best for the patient's procedure. Read More.
Dennis Stripe, CEO was recognized as a runner up in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award Ceremony. Read More.

Distal Tibia Plate
The Medial Distal Tibia Plate is an anatomically contoured plate that is designed to sit anteriorly in order to avoid impingement of the posterior tibial tendon across a range of patients. The Medial Distal Tibia Plates have a minimal profile with localized thickening for stabilization. The plate is intended for fixation of distal tibia fractures requiring more stability than traditional screw fixation such as OTA type 43B and certain OTA 44 Series oblique fractures of the medial malleolus. Three plate lengths are available for selection based on fracture location. The Medial Distal Tibia plates contain Tribrid™ Technology. The plates can accommodate non-locking, fixed angle locking, and variable angle locking screws. Surgeons base their screw choice on patient needs and bone quality.

ISO™ Plate with PocketLock™ Technology
The Mini MaxLock Extreme ISO™ (Intraosseous Sliding Osteotomy) Plate with PocketLock™ Technology combines the bending strength and rotational control of a plate with the compression generation of an inter-fragmentary screw. PocketLock™ Technology provides the advantage of allowing the placement of an inter-fragmentary screw through a plate, using the plate to lock the construct in place to achieve optimal compression. The ISO™ Plate uses the axis of the pocket to direct the fixation screw into the proximal metatarsal. This indication specific plate and accompanying instrumentation will aid in increasing surgeon accuracy in screw placement. For larger corrections, requiring significant displacement of the metatarsal head, the set has an intramedullary plate option, to improve the overall construct stability. The custom bone prep instrumentation and the bottom-side pocket create a low profile construct with no exposed screw heads to cause soft-tissue irritation.

Interesting Technique
|
Lateral Displacement Calcaneal Osteotomy
- The EdgeLock Plate is inserted laterally through the same incision but the orientation is reversed from the typical MDCO orientation. Pocket screw lengths are typically shorter than the MDCO due to the decreased amount of space in the posterior fragment. Some surgeons choose to go bi-cortical for the pocket screw.
 - The EdgeLock Plate is often used as a lever to get more correction than what is conventionally available once the osteotomy has been made.
- The posterior fragment should be buttressed during insertion. This has been accomplished by pinning the posterior fragment to the main body of the calcaneus with a k-wire after the correction has been made and placing a hand around the pin and against the heel to keep the fragment from moving during insertion.
