$100K available in area pitch competitions open to local entrepreneurs that complete the Dream Launch Bootcamp
DANVILLE VA – The River District Association (RDA) is excited to announce that registration has opened for the sixth cohort of the River District Association Dream Launch Bootcamp. Since the start of the program in 2019, nearly 600 individuals have registered for the Bootcamp classes. Additionally, 209 Dream Launch Bootcamp Certificates have been earned by individuals completing all 6 classes.
The RDA Dream Launch Bootcamp is for anyone who wishes to learn more about opening, owning, and operating a business in the Dan River Region; the Bootcamp is also open to current businesses that would like to expand as well as those that would like to audit the courses to prepare for potentially opening a business in the future. There is no cost to participate in the Bootcamp. Classes will be held via Zoom beginning in mid-January with one class in-person in Danville.

SOUTHSIDE ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE YOUTH TOUR TO NATION'S CAPITAL | |
Southside Electric Cooperative invites high school juniors to apply for next summer's Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. Application deadline is Jan. 31, 2024.
SEC will take several students from its 18-county service area on the June 17-21, 2024, trip. The Cooperative pays all the expenses for its students.
Students and chaperones will spend a day on Capitol Hill, visit many of D.C.'s iconic sites, see a Major League Baseball game, visit an electric cooperative, enjoy dinner while cruising the Potomac River and much more.

VA DEPT OF HISTORIC RESOURCES COMMEMORATES TWO HISTORIC SITES IN DANVILLE | |
Plaques to Be Dedicated in Danville, for Two Historic Sites Listed in the Green Book
Early next week, new plaques will be unveiled in the City of Danville
to commemorate two sites featured in the Green Book, a 20th-century travel guide
for African Americans during the Jim Crow era of segregation. The plaques will be
attached to existing historical highway markers installed by the Department of
Historic Resources (DHR) that highlight the histories of the sites.
The public dedication ceremony for the plaques will be held Tuesday, December 12,
starting at 2 p.m. at 320 Holbrook Street (24541), the headquarters of the Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority’s local chapter in Danville. The event is open to members of
the public. Free streetside parking will be available for attendees. The 300 block of
Holbrook Street will be closed off starting at 1:30 p.m.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region featured 2023 Progress Report-Making a Difference! at its Appreciation Luncheon held Thursday, November 9, 2023 at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research.
One hundred twenty guests heard from Community Foundation Board Members and staff, who spoke on four areas of progress in The Foundation’s work. Kathy Milam, Executive Director, described significant institutional legacy gifts to The Foundation that have increased its assets since inception in 1996. Information was shared about endowed funds established from assets of Faith Home, Inc., Dan River Foundation, The Free Clinic of Danville, and National Tobacco Textile Museum.

DCC EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER WITH 10TH ANNUAL "GREAT POINSETTIA DROP" | |
For the last 10 years, through rain, sleet, snow, or dead of night, 150 3-foot tall poinsettia plants miraculously show up on the doorsteps of Danville Community College Educational Foundation (DCCEF) donors, stakeholders, partners, and board members across the college’s service region (City of Danville, Halifax County and Pittsylvania County), just in time for the Holiday Season.
“It’s one of the weeks we enjoy the most throughout the year,” said Shannon Hair, Vice President of Institutional Advancement & Development and Executive Director of the DCCEF. “Every year, we rent a 26-foot U-Haul truck and spend a full week picking up load after load of these beautiful poinsettias and delivering them to our many supporters to remind them of how much we appreciate their generosity and friendship throughout the year.”

DCC Celebrates Completion of First Cybersecurity Training Cohort
Chamber and DCC Partnered to Secure $850,000 Funding for the Training
Danville Community College (DCC) is proud to announce the successful completion of its first 16-week Cybersecurity Training Program cohort. The completion ceremony for the inaugural cohort took place on Monday, December 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the Shields Student Center on the DCC campus.
“We’re incredibly proud of our inaugural cohort of cybersecurity training completers,” said Chadrick Younger, Director of Workforce Services. “They displayed enormous determination and persistence throughout the 16-week training and have a lot to show for their hard work.”
