CREATING HEALTHIER FAMILIES ONE SHOT AT A TIME
|
|
by Phillip J Honea, DO, OB/GYN at Sovah Health
As an obstetrician-gynecologist with Sovah Health, my goal is to always provide the best possible care and medical advice for expectant mothers and individuals who plan to become pregnant. I love helping moms-to-be stay healthy and prepare to welcome their baby into the world. As you can imagine, one of the most important conversations I’ve been having lately with my patients is around COVID-19 vaccines and their safety for those who are pregnant or who are in the planning stage of their pregnancy journey.
Whether you are currently expecting, have recently had a baby or are planning to start or expand your family, I sincerely encourage you to get vaccinated if you have not already done so. I also hope you’ll take a moment to review my answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about COVID-19 vaccines and pregnancy and that it will help you attain the peace of mind that comes from being protected against this virus.
- Why is it important for pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant to be vaccinated against COVID-19?
- Does the COVID-19 vaccine cause fertility problems for women or men?
- If I’m trying to become pregnant, do I need to avoid pregnancy for a specific period of time after being vaccinated?
- Do I need to take a pregnancy test before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?
- What if I am currently pregnant or breastfeeding? Is it safe for me to get the vaccine?
Find answers to the above questions and continue reading here.
Check out this video of myself and Dr. Gunn-Nolan that includes information about fertility, pregnancy, and breastfeeding related to the COVID-19 vaccine where many other concerns are addressed.
If you would like to speak with a provider about COVID-19 vaccination concerns or any aspect of your pregnancy journey, call 844.GO.SOVAH or visit the Find a Doctor tab at SovahHealth.com to make an appointment and get connected with the care you need.

AVERETT AND COMMUNITY CAME TOGETHER TO PACK 20,000 MEALS
|
|
The Averett campus was buzzing with activity Thursday, Sept. 23, as students, faculty, staff, community members and organizations came together to pack 20,000 meals in the University’s Carrington Gym.
Together, more than 100 volunteers assembled oatmeal packets from Harvest Pack that were in turn donated to God’s Storehouse, a local Danville food bank, through eight assembly lines.
Harvest Pack was founded in 2012 and has packed over 8 million meals since that time. In the Dan River Region, Fleming estimated over 60,000 meals total have been assembled and distributed.
God’s Storehouse Executive Director Karen Harris was also on site to help with the volunteer efforts. Just before 1 p.m., the assembly goal of 20,000 meals was met for the Dan River Region.

GET YOUR MAMMORGRAM: IT'S AN HOUR THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE
|
|
By Ankit Madan, MD [Hematologist and Medical Oncologist]
According to the American Cancer Society breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the U.S., behind only skin cancers. In fact, the ACS puts the average risk as a one in eight chance that a woman will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The risk is much higher in women with inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene. According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is now the most common cancer globally, claiming 12 percent of new cancer cases. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the U.S, superseded only by lung cancer.
|
|
So, that’s some not-so-good news. How about some good news? Breast cancer death rates have been dropping steadily. Statistics show that the overall death rate from breast cancer decreased by one percent each year from 2013 to 2018. Now, the question is “why?” Well, the decreases have been associated with several factors, including better treatments and earlier detection through screenings.
Here’s some more good news. You can get screened by scheduling a simple, routine mammogram. A mammogram takes only about one hour, once a year, but it’s benefits can last much longer. Mammograms help detect breast cancer earlier than waiting for symptoms to appear. Breast cancer, when detected early through routine non-invasive screening, is curable. It’s an incredibly important weapon in the fight against breast cancer. Early detection can result in an easier, less intense, and more effective treatments.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so if you haven’t already scheduled your mammogram for the year, now is a great time to get it on your calendar and get the peace of mind that comes from taking charge of your health. Health is wealth. Its one hour a year that could save your life.
