Fourth Saturday Garden and Gather - May

Spring Planting Guide for OLOTR Cemetery Spaces

At Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery, we encourage plantings that are native or well adapted to our Central Texas climate, require little water, and are generally more resistant to deer and rabbit browsing. Because the cemetery is xeriscaped, we use and recommend organic gardening methods that work in harmony with the natural beauty of the land. Hoses marked with blue reflectors are available throughout the property to help families water their gardens.

Please keep these guidelines in mind

  • We recommend plants that mature at 24 inches tall or less, so the monument remains clearly visible.
  • Please choose plants that will remain neatly within your space and not spread into neighboring spaces. In a standard 4-ft-wide plot, a plant placed in the center should mature no wider than about 30 inches.
  • Do not plant trees or large bushes. Always check the plant tag for mature height and width.
  • We recommend native cedar mulch, if you use mulch. Maximum height for mulch is 4 inches on a space.
  • Protect new plantings early. Reapply gentle repellents as needed.
  • If one plant struggles, try a tougher replacement.

About roses

We love and encourage roses as a beautiful planting choice for cemetery spaces. In Central Texas, roses are best planted from approximately November through March, allowing them to establish strong roots before summer heat arrives. Families may plant one small rose bush within a space and allow grass to grow around the rest of the area; once established, mulch is not required, and our caregivers will trim the grass around the rose. Please choose a compact variety that remains within the space and does not obscure the monument.

The new Rules and Regulations went into effect on May 4, 2026. This is a reminder that the cemetery staff, led by Carolyn King, will begin walking the cemetery grounds to observe the implementation of the new rules.

The order of the gardens that will be checked (dependent on weather):

  1. Notices on colored paper placed in sealed bags will be secured on each space that is not in compliance with the new rules.
  2. The owner of the non-compliant space will also receive a phone call and email.
  3. If no effort is made by any family member to clean up their space after being contacted by the cemetery, the cemetery will remove all non-compliant items.
  4. Small, removed items will not be kept in a “graveyard” for future retrieval, they will be placed in a recycle bin for pick up.
  5. Items of value, shepherds hook and metal art will be kept for two weeks, after that they will be recycled or donated.

To everyone receiving this email, please share this information with any relative or friend who may be taking care of your loved one’s space(s) so they are aware of the current Rules and Regulations. Thank you.
