Community colleges play an important role in educating and training current and future generations of workers,
in addition to providing affordable and responsive higher education to thousands of Pennsylvanians every year.
Community Colleges Offer Free Classes to Inmates through Grant
Two community colleges recently announced the Lehigh Valley Youth Demonstration Grant program, a partnership between county courts, community colleges and the Workforce Board Lehigh Valley. Funded through a $988,000 state grant, participants - who can be incarcerated or on probation - will be offered tuition-free classes or vocational training through Lehigh Carbon Community College or Northampton Community College.
HACC President Offers Updates During Virtual News Conference
Initiatives and activities at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, were addressed in early December, during a virtual news conference hosted by HACC President and CEO John J. “Ski” Sygielski, MBA, Ed.D. Among the topics discussed were low- or no-cost Open Educational Resources (OER) available to HACC students.
Business Majors Will Help Community Members File Taxes
Last year, 17 Montgomery County Community College business and accounting students offered to help their fellow students with preparing, reviewing and filing forms for the 2019 tax season. Support from Mary Ellen Glick brought the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to campus with help from the Campaign for Working Families. The program will expand to the greater community in 2020.
