Friday, March 24, 11 AM
Kent County Library,, DE
Our PAWS for Reading program is based on the concept that a pet's non-judgmental acceptance and loving attention can help new and struggling readers feel more comfortable and less self-conscious when reading aloud. These sessions create a forum where readers can practice their skills in a "safe" place without criticism. PAWS' goal is to provide a positive reading experience where the reader builds confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and develop a love for reading. PAWS for Reading sessions are held during the day at schools and in the evening at libraries on a regular, set schedule.
Three courses in one day:
Connections,
PATHS,
& Dog Body Language
Thursday, April 6 (all day)
Sussex County, DE
1. Creative Connections: Sometimes petting and brushing your dog isn't enough during a visit. Working for prolonged periods of time with kids or elders sometimes calls for a few extra "tricks up your sleeve." We have created a fun, hour-long class that will give you scads of ideas on easy, simple activities you can incorporate into your visits - with not much more than you already have - a dog, treats, and a few well chosen "things" to bring along.
2. PATHS - Pet-Assisted Therapy in the Hospital Setting:
This course is for those who visit with people in hospital settings (including nursing homes, skilled care and rehab facilities. We will take a look at what people may be feeling while they are hospitalized and how pet therapy can really help.
3. Reading Dog Body Language:
Wouldn't you like to know what your dog is thinking? He's telling you A LOT - but it's all through body language. Learn about the ways your dog is communicating his feelings and thoughts to you and what you can do when you begin to get the message.

Dedicated PAWS volunteer, David Mullenix, passed away suddenly Tuesday, February 21st.
David joined PAWS with his Australian Labradoodle, Ariel Lee, in April of 2013. Together, they spent many hours bringing joy as a therapy team. They were a part of the Courthouse Companions program and volunteered at the Delaware County Courthouse. They also visited with the children and families of the Ronald McDonald House and at Wellington at Hershey's Mill.
As a PAWS for Reading team, the two visited at The Media Upper Providence Library and The Helen Kate Furness Library.
David was also a First Visit Assistant for PAWS. He enjoyed taking many teams on their first visits to their new sites. One of David's favorite PAWS' stories is about his first First Visit. When he was ready to go with his PAWS green on, of course Ariel was expecting to go with him. Ariel was obviously upset with him when he told her that she couldn't go. He laughingly said that Ariel gave him the cold shoulder when he came home, purposely looking away and not greeting him when he came home. He said that he learned his lesson that day.
From then on, anytime he was doing a First Visit, he would wait until he got to the car and out of Ariel's site before putting on any PAWS gear.
We thank David for his countless hours of service to PAWS for People. David will be forever missed, but never forgotten.
The services for David are private, however, there will be a forthcoming celebration of life, on June 13th at Washington Crossing National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PAWS for People in David's name.

Remembering Carlos
|
|
 |
|
Arlo and I met Carlos on our first visit to C.E.R.T.S. Adult Action Center in Smyrna in Spring 2014. He was relaxing in an overstuffed brown recliner, taking a break from his wheel chair. I introduced us and caught my first glimpse of that wide smile I would look forward to seeing every week. As Arlo crawled into Carlos' comfy chair and snuggled next to him, they formed a bond that would last for years.
Carlos lived with serious disabilities from birth, and the burdens only grew more serious after traumatic injury in a car crash. But each time we arrived next to his easy chair and asked how he was doing, his answer was always the same. "Excellent!" He loved knock-knock jokes, remembered his part of each one, and always roared "No way!" after the punchlines. Eventually, our visits to see him became a pilgrimage for me. Carlos taught faith, humor, resilience, and grace without ever using any of those words.
He passed away in his sleep on February 10 at age 26, leaving me a better person for knowing him. Here is my favorite picture of Carlos and his buddy Arlo. Will I ever forget Carlos? No way!
