Creative Connections

Sometimes petting and brushing your dog isn't enough during a visit. Working for prolonged periods of time with kids or elders sometimes calls for you to have a few extra "tricks up your sleeve." We have created a fun, hour-long class that will give you scads of ideas on easy, simple activities you can incorporate into your visits - with not much more than you already have - a dog, treats, and a few well chosen "things" to bring along.

Many of our teams visit patients in the mental health sites. Come learn about different mental health issues, how disorders present themselves, and how teams can provide the best and safest visit possible to people in this situation. By understanding why people behave in a particular way, PAWS teams can provide a more personalized visit for the patients as well as assist site staff with increasing motivation, lessening anxiety, and giving the person hope for their future.

Tricks of the Trade

Come learn valuable "tricks" that you and your therapy companion can use while visiting! These are all simple to learn and can add variety to you own repertoire of fun behaviors that can entertain and distract.

PAWS Puppy 2

Is your puppy already off to a good start with its training but you are both ready for the next step? Come have fun with your pup while advancing your skills!
This 5-week course is for puppies who have completed PAWS Puppy 1 OR are at least 6 months old and ready to work on increasing reliable performance of the basics they already know. More emphasis will be placed on handler (owner) focus around distraction. As a team, you will be become able to to perform happily and reliably across environments.
Therapy Dog Prep
7:30 PM
Want to become a PAWSome team? This class is for you! Handlers will have the opportunity to review and practice the basic skills necessary for their dogs to become therapy pets. We do lots of fun exercises to help you and your pup get ready for real pet therapy work.

PAWS Is On the MOVE
|
|
We are proud to announce that this week PAWS for People is relocating to our new "PAWS Office and Training Center," located in Newark, DE.
During the next few days, we will be transitioning to our new space. We ask for your patience and understanding as we will be "offline" for parts of this week:
Wednesday (10/26) - Friday (10/28). During this time we may not be able to respond to your email and/or phone call requests as quickly as we usually do.
Our plan is to be back up and running near full capacity on Monday, October 31.

PAWS for People appreciates
The Mushroom Festival's generous 2016 grant award to support Creative Connections, a new PAWS program. Creative Connections teaches our pet therapy teams additional ways to engage visit recipients by providing lots of ideas and resources for simple activities that encourage and increase interaction, communication, skill development, and just good old fun to increase smiles and happiness! A special Creative Connections Kit - a col
lection of items to support these new creative ways to connect with people - is a great resource that our teams receive upon completion of training.

Wag-n-Walk: Exceeding Expectations!

The 8th Annual Wag-n-Walk was held this past Saturday at Delcastle Recreation Center.
When the committee saw the forecast for Saturday,
we expected everyone to stay home in their warm, dry houses.
Wow... did we underestimate the dedication of PAWS for People supporters.
What a great day filled with happy people/pets, dedicated vendors, and smiling volunteers!
