Just the Right Amount of Kisses

My daughter, Debs, was at the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children Nemours Emergency Room last week due to severe dehydration and low blood sugar. While there, we were lucky enough to have had a visit by Sandy and her human Craig McClintock! Sandy is just the sweetest and it really helped my daughter. Sandy showed up right after Debs got her IV put in and stayed while she had her blood sugar checked twice via a finger prick. Sandy was able to help Debs be brave and gave her just the right amount of kisses!!

It was amazing to have Sandy there, not just for my daughter, but she gave me some relief as well!

We are so grateful Sandy was there!!  - Kate

A Poem for Therapy Team Dolly & Gene Thornton

There once was a red dog from Kent,
Whose visits seem quite heaven sent.
Therapy dog - the REAL deal!
Dolly's love helps folks heal,
That, of course, is her special intent."

Share the Knowledge - Instructors Needed
Thanks to everyone who responded to the call for PAWS University Instructors! Our team of trainers is growing.

But we still have more growing to do - especially in Sussex County, DE.  If you would like to be involved in sprinkling the seeds of knowledge that is PAWS University, please contact Sammy ( STaylor@PAWSforPeople.org) .

Shining Stars
Karen Kohler, Gunner, & Piper
Karen joined PAWS with her very handsome yellow Lab, Gunner, in February, 2007. As an employee of Christiana Hospital, Karen saw first-hand the benefits that pet therapy could bring to staff and patients. In March of 2009, Karen and Gunner became a PAWS for Reading team and began to visit with some local schools and Libraries. Karen and Gunner initiated PAWS visits with the Delaware National Guard for Deployments and Homecomings - visits which are among some of our teams' favorites! Gunner gave so much to those he visited until he passed away in 2013. K aren now visits with her adorable Shih Poo, Piper. Karen shares Piper and his wonderful personality on visit to Linden Hill Elementary School and the Kirkwood Public Library. In the past, they also visited the Christiana Care Health System. This duo also attends many community events, including, of course, the National Guard events! Thank you, Karen, for sharing your wonderful pups with the community and helping so many readers to build their confidence through the PAWS for Reading program over the past 12 years. Thank you, Gunner and Piper, for sharing your warm furry love with all those you meet.
Kathy Rathgeb & Callie
Kathy joined PAWS with her sweet American Bulldog, Callie, in 2012. Kathy learned about PAWS when her dog trainer noticed that Callie had a very calm temperament and a fantastic personality perfect for pet therapy work. Together, they regularly visit at Bowling Green Brandywine Treatment Center where Callie's gentle nature is a perfect fit for those who need a little puppy love to support their journey to recovery. Kathy and Callie are also regulars at community events including J.McLaughlin (Greenville, DE) , Heart in the Game, craft fairs, and Barnes & Noble  events where sitting on the floor in the middle of the customers, they literally stop traffic. Through great conversations, they have inspired many other people to learn more about PAWS. Callie is rewarded for this great work with french fries at the end of their shift. Thank you, Kathy, for sharing your time and your special girl. Thank you, Callie, for sharing your non-judgmental love with everyone you meet.
