2-B or not 2-B
Pacific Biodiesel Technologies Quality Manager Lee Litvin announces new fuel quality standard

Quality Manager Lee Litvin is based at Sequential Pacific Biodiesel in Salem, Oregon

Fuel quality has always been a top priority at Pacific Biodiesel. As Quality Manager, I oversee the data and trends of the fuel quality that is produced from the production facilities operated by Pacific Biodiesel, assist producers with the tools they need to ensure top quality fuel, and help remedy production situations. Pacific Biodiesel has been producing quality fuel that meets the ASTM D6751 specifications since they were adopted in 2002.

The ASTM Committee on Standards recently established a new voluntary grade of biodiesel. This standard, called 1-B, is more stringent than the current requirements for ASTM D 6751 which will now be referred to as 2-B. The two changes to the standard are a maximum monoglyceride concentration of 0.4% and a maximum Cold Soak Filtration Time of 200 seconds. The numbers were adopted to mirror the diesel No. 1 and No. 2 grades with the number 1's having better cold weather characteristics. It is with great pride that I can report that fuel from our Maui, Oahu and Oregon plants has for at least the last three years produced fuel that already meets the 1-B requirement. The biodiesel from the Hawaii Island plant will utilize technology that will ensure that all fuel from that facility will meet or exceed the 1-B requirement.

Maui Disposal Rolls on Renewables

Recycling and waste hauling company sets green standard on Maui

It's 4:00pm and trucks line up to fuel up at Pacific Biodiesel's B100 pump. This has been the scene at the fuel pump station since earlier this year when Maui Disposal Company began integrating biodiesel into its trucking fleet. Maui Disposal is so pleased with the operation of the vehicles on biodiesel that after only four months, 40% of its fleet now runs on 100% biodiesel. "We run 23 trucks on biodiesel and so far have very few issues," said Maui Disposal Vice President of Operations, Rick Miller. "It's been a good transition for us going from diesel to biodiesel."

Maui Disposal has been in business for over 40 years as Maui's largest waste hauling and recycling operation. With 23 vehicles, they have set a precedent as the largest Maui fleet running on B100 to date and anticipate that this number will increase in the future. "Maui Disposal will be a customer of Pacific Biodiesel for years to come," said Miller. "Eventually all trucks will run on a blend or 100% biodiesel."

While Maui Disposal is Maui's largest biodiesel fleet, other fleets throughout the State of Hawaii are setting an example of sustainability as well. The City and County of Honolulu boasts buses, trucks, and equipment operating on biodiesel, making it the state's largest biodiesel fleet. Pacific Biodiesel is proud to support fleets that have made a commitment to a renewable energy future.

The newly operating Big Island Biodiesel fuel pump
Pacific Biodiesel is excited to increase its biodiesel distribution as Big Island Biodiesel gears up for production! The pump is currently open on Wednesdays ONLY from 9am - 2pm, until further notice. The pump offers B100 Biodiesel and is located at 16240 Mikahala St., Shipman Business Park Keaau, HI 96749.

Biodiesel is now available at fueling stations on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. We have plans to expand our Maui station on Hobron Avenue by offering a B20 blend as well as our usual B100 product. This new, larger station will be located right next door to our current Maui location and will help us accommodate larger trucks. In order to distribute biodiesel throughout the state, we are pleased to be working with partners such as Aloha Petroleum, Mid Pac Petroleum, Maui Oil, Akana Petroleum, Hawaii Petroleum and Maui Petroleum. You will see more of our biodiesel available through these vendors in the coming months in various blends. We are also working to extend B100 distribution to Kona and Kauai. Pacific Biodiesel Bids Aloha to its Third Retiree
"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want." - Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes

Since its inception in 1996, Pacific Biodiesel has proudly employed dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to run our offices and facilities in
Hawaii and on the mainland. The reach of the company and the number of employees continues to grow, and we could not be more proud. While no one likes to say goodbye to "family members," Pacific Biodiesel bids a fond aloha to our third retiree, Operations Manager Larry Zolezzi. Every retirement is a testament to the sustainability of our expanding company and growing mission. And with every door closed, another one opens.

A Message from Larry Zolezzi

Greetings Everyone,

I'm deeply grateful for this opportunity to retire and pursue
Operations Manager and Pacific Biodiesel's Third Retiree, Larry Zolezzi
my hobbies and interests. In addition to catching up on my rest, I've been outrigger canoe paddling three times a week. I'm dancing some-times five nights a week. I'm playing my saxophone and should have some public performances starting in September. My first post-retirement wood sculpture should be finished in a week or so and the next one is already designed. The only negative thing I can say about retirement is that I'm having to do some of those dirty jobs around the house that I was putting off until retirement.

I'm appreciative of all the Pacific Biodiesel family who continue to make this a great company, especially the group that picked up my responsi-bilities. I will still be active with the company board of directors, so you should see me on a regular basis. You can follow my personal exploits as soon as I get my website working, www.Doesn'tmytanlookgreat.com.

Mahalo,

Larry Zolezzi
