NOW OPEN! Pacific Sporting Arms East, 8585 PGA Drive, Walled Lake, MI
Welcome to Pacific Sporting Arms East's first Email Newsletter.  As some of you know, Pacific Sporting Arms has recently opened a second store in Michigan. Our new store is located at 8585 PGA Drive, Suite 104, in Walled Lake, MI.  We are located in the old Great Lakes Sporting Arms location for those who are familiar.  Even though we have leased the same facility, we are in no way affiliated with Great Lakes Sporting Arms.  I am sure most of you have heard of Pacific Sporting Arms in California.  We have been in business for over 17 years and we are the largest dealer of High Grade competition shotguns in the United States.  We carry the largest inventory and selection of any dealer.  Our current inventory in both stores consists of almost 600 top of the line shotguns and rifles by the best makers in the world.  We are direct authorized dealers and distributors for Krieghoff, Perazzi, Beretta Premier, Blaser, Zoli, Browning, Rizzini, Caesar Guerini, Fabarm, Dickinson Arms, Merkel, Salvinelli, Benelli, Gurlla, AYA, Perugini & Visini, Fausti, Sako, Mauser, Sauer, Cosmi, Guilio Bernardelli, Anschutz, and Christensen Arms. We are also direct importers for several brands we carry, such as Salvinelli, Grulla, AYA, Cosmi, and Giulio Bernardelli.  WIth this huge and diverse selection, Pacific Sporting Arms is able to assure each customer the best selection and expertise in finding the right shotgun or rifle for his/her needs, all at our every day competitive pricing.  Our staff is trained in all aspects of each manufacturers products, and, we are ahead of our competition on new trends and products on the market today and in the future.  Pacific Sporting Arms founder and owner, John Herkowitz, has been instrumental in the past 18 years in the development and improvement of a large number of shotguns currently on the market and being used by top competitors.  There are numerous shotguns on the market by several different manufacturers which feature designs and innovations created by John himself.
Here at Pacific Sporting Arms, we pride ourselves in making sure each customer receives the best service and advise when purchasing a new firearm.  We will work with each customer in all phases of the purchase from initial discussion, selection, to the proper fit of each gun.  Our new Pacific Sporting Arms East store will also have the largest selection of Demo guns from more manufacturers than any other Demo Center in the United States.  Instead of just being able to Demo one or two different products, we will have a huge selection of Demo guns from the numerous manufacturers we represent.  Whether you are an avid Sporting Clay, Skeet, Trap, or Field shooter, we will be able to allow you to "test drive" a sample of what you looking to purchase.  All of this within 5 minutes drive from our Walled Lake Store.
Our store hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9AM-5PM.  We are also open for appointments, if another time/day suites you better.
The Importance Of Proper
Gun Fit
One of the most important things to consider before and after you select your new shotgun, is the fit of the gun.  Most manufacturers of high grade competition shotguns offer more than one stock configuration for the guns they sell.  Most of these gun makers have the option of a custom made stock, and for some of the companies like Perazzi, Perugini & Visini, Salvinelli, and our exclusive headed stock Beretta DT11's, there is no additional cost for this service.  Most other companies will charge an additional cost for this same service.
Most guns come with a generic stock primarily made to fit a normal size right-handed male.  In reality, this means it fits less than 50% of the male shooters and less than 5% of female shooters. Your basic stock measurements are the length of the stock or the length of pull (lop), the height of the stock or drop at the stock, and the cast or the bend right or left in the stock. These are the basics that need to be right so you can comfortably shoot the gun and hit targets or birds.  Having a stock that is too long or too short, too high or too low, or cast in the opposite direction will make the gun difficult and uncomfortable to shoot.
There are numerous detailed measurements while custom fitting a stock; drop at comb (dac), drop at face (daf), drop at heel (dah), cast at comb, cast at heel, cast at toe, grip measurements (English, pistol grip, prince of whales, field), palm swell, roll over, pitch (angle of the recoil pad), and thickness of the stock. All of these measurements, if done correctly, will make the gun fit perfectly to the shape and unique differences of a shooter's build and size, which in turn will let the gun shoot where the shooter is looking.  The goal of a proper gun fit is to make the gun an extention of the shooters eyes.
Determining LOP, drop, and cast are pretty simple for a gun fitter with limited experience.  The more detailed measurements need to be left to an experienced and trained gun fitter.  This is very important, and if incorrect information is given to the stock maker, your gun will not perform the way you expect it to.  Unfortunately, we have seen a huge increase of instructors attempting to be gun fitters.  The two do not go hand in hand, just like a stock maker is not automatically a gun fitter.
Years of training and learning are needed for an individual to be an expert gun fitter.  We have found only a small handful of professionally trained and qualified gun fitters in the United States.  Pacific Sporting Arms is lucky to have one of the Premier Master gun fitters in the US.  Pacific Sporting Arms owner, John Herkowitz, has over 20 years experience learning and applying the art of gun fit to thousands of shooters throughout the world.  He learned from the best Italian, English, and German gun fitters.  He has traveled throughout the United States and Europe apprenticing and learning the different methods of fitting for the numerous different diciplines of shooting.  His expertise and guidance has been sought after and used for years by several European makers in the development of stock dimensions and designs to be used by the American shooter.  Numerous Stocks on European guns such as Perazzi, Blaser, Krieghoff, Beretta, P&V, and Salvinelli have stocks either designed or influenced by him.
John is available by appointment at the Pacific Sporting Arms East store in Michigan, at the Pacific Sporting Arms West store in California, or at our Texas location in San Antonio during the World Skeet Shoot and Sporting Clays Nationals.

    Real value for your money...
About 6 years ago, I was visited in My California store by a group of gentlemen who had a new gun they wanted me to look at.  When one of them opened the first box, I eyed with anticipation a nice looking case colored sidelock action side-by-side.  Before I got it in my hands I asked where it was made.  The slow response was "Turkey".  I quickly informed them that due to very bad luck with previous Turkish guns, I would not be interested. Anticipating my response, I was asked to please look at the one they brought, and to hear them out before making my decision.  Reluctantly, I took the new gun in my hands and started to examine the workmanship. Quickly it became apparent, this was like no other Turkish gun I had ever looked at. The workmanship was outstanding and the quality of the gun appeared to be very good.  The prices were an unbelievable bargain.
It was explained to me there are several gun manufacturers in Turkey, some very good ones and several very bad ones.  It's the same in all European countries as well as here in the United States.
The proposal they gave me was a very unique one. They wanted me to buy 6 prototype 20ga's at a special price.  I was encouraged to have my gunsmiths take the guns apart to evaluate the workmanship, test the metal for hardness, and evaluate the design and quality.  We shot one of the guns, patterned it, abused it, and even tried to break it.  Overall, we put it through some pretty severe shooting conditions. The results were impressive. A very well made gun that shot where it was supposed to, patterned as good as any gun we sell, did not break, and did not loosen up.  We had zero problems or issues with it.  We then sold the prototypes to customers under the name Dickinson.  Every gun was sold, and to this day we have not had one issue, breakage, or problem with any of them.
About a year ago, I was again visited by the same group of gentlemen who were now working under the name Dickinson Arms which is based in Moorpark, CA.  They brought with them a sampling of the new line of Dickinson Arms Shotguns.  Both side-by-side and over/under models.  The guns were of the same quality and workmanship as before, so it was decided that Pacific Sporting Arms would be carrying this fine line of affordable quality firearms.
The line had grown to include true sidelock action 12 gauge and 20 gauge side-by-sides called Prestige, and over/unders called Royals, from beautiful bone charcoal case coloring to highly hand engraved versions that would rival guns costing 10 times as much.  Every gauge from 12ga to 410 is offered in a wonderful line of scalloped boxlock and false side plate action side-by-sides and over/unders.  Double triggers, single triggers English stocks and pistol grip stocks can be ordered.  Custom ordering with various barrel lengths, stock dimensions, and  engraving patterns can be also be ordered.  Prices start at $1,995.00 for the scalloped boxlock side-by-sides, called the Estate line.
So far, the guns we have been getting in are field guns.  We did get to look at a very nice and affordable sidelock action Sporting Clays gun from Dickinson Arms several months back.  We made a few suggestions to them and hopefully we will be seeing the Sporting Line by this summer.  We have a large selection in both the Michigan and California store so please stop by to check them out.
