December 2016

Notes from the Principal

Though the month of December brings a chill, Palos West warms up with many opportunities to spread compassion.   This month is filled with student programs, performances, and opportunities to help those in need.  It certainly is a wonderful time of the year, and I couldn't be prouder of the staff and students!

The Palos West Student Council is sponsoring a fundraiser for L.L.S. (Leukemia Lymphoma Society.) We are calling this "Pennies for Patients." This will be starting Monday Dec. 5th and go until Wed Dec. 21st.  Please look for the flier coming home for more information! In addition, our 2 nd grade team is collecting mittens, hats, and gloves in our 27th annual "Mittens for Kittens" Collection.  And for our November PBIS "Compassionate Craft" celebration, many of the classrooms made fleece scarves to donate! The mittens and gloves are donated to an underprivileged school where many of the students are in need of items such as gloves and scarves.  Lastly, many classes are writing letters to troops that are currently serving our country and are on active duty and can't be home with their families. Not only are they practicing their writing, but they are showing kindness and support as well.  Service learning projects provide valuable experiences for the students as we learn about compassion and helping others in need.  Thank you to the families that either donated fleece or donated their time in helping the students make the scarves.  As always, your support and generosity are much appreciated!

November's Book Fair was a success! Thank you to the families that volunteered your time. All profits from the book fair will be used to purchase new books and digital supports in the West Media Center for students to enjoy! We also thank our PFA for arranging and funding the entertainment Tim Hannig from Pro Kids. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the presentation, and we loved having our West families join us for the visitation time!

Students began their winter benchmarking testing November 29th.  Students are reassessed through Aimsweb and MAP reading and math tests.  We use this data along with classroom assessments to take a closer look at how each student is performing. In doing this we can ensure that instruction is differentiated to meet the needs of each child. Teachers target specific skills for individual students during TIDE (Targeted Instruction, Differentiation, and Enrichment) time as well as throughout the day.

Finally, don't miss our Cardinal Choir and 5 th Grade Band performances.  The band will be performing at Palos South on December 7th at 7 pm, and the Winter Choral program will be held at Palos West December 14th at 7 pm. Also our Kindergarten Holiday program is December 16th at 10:30 & 2:00. These performances will be sure to put you in the holiday spirit!  Enjoy the winter break, the holiday season, and some quality time.....with your family and friends.

As I looked through sale ads after Thanksgiving, read about Black Friday, and avoided Cyber Monday...I can honestly say that my favorite gift is being able to work with your children every day. Being in the presence of your children and watching them explore, grow, and learn is the best present I could ask for!

"The greatest gift you can give someone is your time, your attention, your love, and your concern."

WINTER RECESS- NO SCHOOL
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2016 THROUGH MONDAY, JANUARY 9, 2017
CLASSES RESUME TUESDAY, JANUARY 10th

schoolclosingWinter School Closings
Palos 118 utilizes the Emergency Closing Center system which alerts all media outlets such as
Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7 and Channel 9 and major radio stations.  School closings are also listed on the district website:
www.palos118.org and the Emergency Closing Center website:
www.emergencyclosings.com.
Additionally, District 118 will utilize an automated calling system to call home, cell and/or work phone numbers in the event of a school closing.  Unfortunately, this system will not perform if you utilize "Privacy Manager" or a similar telephone screening device and in some instances may not connect.  Palos 118 may also declare a one-hour late start option to provide an additional solution for poor weather conditions.
outdoorrecessOutdoor Recess
This is the time of the year when many parents ask the question, "How do we determine if it is too cold for outdoor recess?"  We want to remind parents that we send the students out when the temperature is above 15 degrees including the wind chill.  Although this may seem to be a bit cold, the students truly benefit from the fresh air and exercise during the winter months.  Regardless of the weather report, remember to dress your child appropriately including a heavy coat, hat and gloves.  If your child has a medical condition that is affected by the cold weather, please contact Mrs. Segredo, our school nurse.  By working together, we can be sure that the children will get through the winter months in a healthy and productive manner.

**The Lost and Found is getting VERY FULL.  Please feel free to stop by the office to see if your child has an article of clothing that belongs to them.**  Any articles of clothing still in the Lost and Found at Winter Break will be donated.
latestartLate Start of School/Weather Delay
A late start schedule delays all school and bus operations by one hour. Students report to their bus stops one hour later and schools begin one hour later. The late start schedule operates as follows:
  • No before school programs at any schools or South zero hour.
  • All schools and Kindergarten begin one hour later: East and West begin at 10:00 a.m.
  • All schools end at their normal time.
  • After school activities occur unless otherwise indicated.
  • All bus route pickups are one hour later in the a.m. with same p.m. drop-off times.
  • A.M. Kindergarten ends at its normal time.
  • P.M. Kindergarten occurs at normal start and stop times.
  • If a late start is declared, the status does not change to a full closing except in extreme conditions,
The decision to institute a late start instead of closing school is dependent on the forecast and conditions at decision making time. The late start option is designed to give road snow removal operations additional time which will hopefully improve travel. Parents should always exercise personal judgment and place safety first when sending their child to school regardless of whether a normal or late start schedule occurs. Parents are advised of a late start in the same manner as a closing of school. The late start option permits the minimum attendance time for students and the school day does not have to be "made up" as a closed day.
afterschoolAfter School Clubs
Palos West offers a variety of after school clubs.  In order for these activities to run smoothly and ensure your child's safety, it is necessary for the parent/guardian to inform the club sponsor if there is a change in how the child is going home or if someone other than the child's parent/guardian is picking them up.  A note must be written by the parent/guardian and handed to the club sponsor by the student.  Emails are not encouraged due to the time limitations the teachers have between the end of the day and the start of the club.

notesfromtheofficeNotes from the Office
As a reminder, the office closes at 4:00 p.m. and the doors will be locked at that time for safety purposes.  Homework pick up and any forgotten homework items need to be picked up before 4:00 p.m.  Thank  you for your cooperation in this matter.

nursenotesNurse's Notes
Mrs. Segredo, RN/BSN/PEL/CSN

The first full week of December is recognized as National Handwashing Awareness Week.    This campaign has been in place since 1999 to increase awareness of the importance of how the simple task of washing our hands can prevent the spread of illness. It is good information to keep reinforcing at home.

1.  Germs are everywhere!   In schools, viruses and bacteria are found in many areas including cafeteria tables, doorknobs, keyboards and desks.  Some viruses and bacteria can live from 20 minutes up to 2 hours or more on these surfaces.
2.  Knowing when to wash your hands is just as important as knowing how to wash your hands.  We should wash our hands:
  • before eating, preparing or serving food,
  • after going to the bathroom or changing a diaper,
  • after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing,
  • after handling money,
  • before and after taking care of someone who is sick,
  • after touching pets or other animals,
  • when your hands are dirty, and
  • after playing outside.
3.  When washing your hands,
  • wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap.
  • Rub hands together to make a lather and scrub all surfaces-hands, wrists,
  •  between your fingers and around/under your fingernails, for 10-20 seconds.
  • For children, singing the "Happy Birthday" song is a guide for the right amount of time.
  • Rinse hands under running water and dry hands with a clean paper towel or air dryer.
  • Use the same paper towel to turn off the faucet when done.
 4.  Keep hands away from our eyes, nose and mouth.

If soap and water are not available, alcohol based hand sanitizers are a good alternative.  When using a hand sanitizer, apply product to the palm of one hand.  Rub hands together making sure to cover all surfaces.  Continue rubbing until hands are dry.

Washing our hands frequently can significantly reduce our chances of getting sick.  Let's all do our part to keep ourselves and others healthy!

This year's winter program, "December In Our Town", is a delightful multicultural holiday musical which finds our singers encountering various December holidays throughout their town as they collect canned goods for the food pantry.  Keeping with the theme of our program, the choir members would like to encourage everyone to donate an item to our local food pantry by Thursday, December 15th.  There will be boxes in the gym during the performances on Wednesday, December 14th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm.  There will also be a donation box in the music room.  Thank you for supporting the Palos Hills Food Pantry!

Mrs. Martinez
On Saturday, November 19th, 4th and 5th grade ALPS students participated in the Young Inventor's Challenge at the Chicago Toy & Game Fair held at Navy Pier.  The Chicago Toy & Game Fair brings together imagination, play, and inventive thinking as students create their own original toy or game invention.  Top toy and game industry representatives provided advice, recognition, and encouragement to all the young inventors at the Fair to continue to dream big and discover the possibilities of play!

5th grade student, Johnny Pempek was the Runner-Up in the Junior Division for his game titled, "SeaStack".  Congratulations to Johnny for winning this award!

Before attending Navy Pier, the students had an opportunity to "test" out their toy or game with students at Palos West.  At the "Palos West Toy & Game Fair", Christina Angellotti's  game titled "A-MAZE-ING" was a favorite among the 4th grade students and won the 1st place award!

Congratulations to all the students who created an original toy/game and who participated in the Toy & Game Fair!
