Success Spotlight:
The Whole Health Committee of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church
Three years ago, after having worked for decades as a Special Education teacher, Walda Helvie, with the help of others from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, created a health ministry at her church. After getting the blessing of their Pastor, Vicky Garber, the "Whole Health Committee" surveyed their 800-person congregation, assessing what people wanted and needed from this ministry. Walda and her team were excited by what they heard, and were fortunate to have people on the committee who were truly invested in the success of the ministry. Read on...

In Remembrance ...
Marjorie Williams, born in 1920, passed away in her home on July 1, 2013.
Marjorie dedicated her life to nursing, working as an operating room nurse, school nurse, guidance counselor, nurse instructor, and Assistant Director of Nursing at Deaconess Hospital. In 1995, she helped to create the Parish Nurse Ministries at Forest Chapel U.M.C., and, as a result, Williams became known as one of the "Mothers of Parish Nursing" in Cincinnati. Read on ...

New PHM Program: Journeying through Grief
Respectfully and compassionately helping others in their grief process is a complicated, sometimes difficult process. After some of our partnering churches had expressed a desire for an actual program to address grief, ERH Parish Health Ministry partnered with The Stephen Ministries to offer "Journeying through Grief" - a simple, well-written, accessible program for those who have lost a loved one. What is Observation Status?
If you require a stay in the hospital and are covered by Medicare, there is an important question you should be asking - "Am I on observation status or admitted as an inpatient?" Staying in the hospital overnight or even for several nights doesn't guarantee that you have been officially admitted as an inpatient. Although confusing, you could be in a hospital bed, in a room, receive numerous tests, be given care and your medications, and yet not be officially "admitted." Read on...

The Yellow Dot - Do you have one?
Parish Health Ministry, a service of Episcopal Retirement Homes, is now promoting one of its latest initiatives, The Yellow Dot Program. The program places yellow dots on automobiles, which alert First Responders (EMS, paramedics, FD) and Emergency Room personnel to vital medical information in case of an automobile accident. When rescuers have access to this information, it saves time during the crucial "golden hour" of treatment immediately following an accident. The Yellow Dot Program could mean the difference between life and death. Read on...

Why I Give to ERH Parish Health Ministry... By Ethelrine S. Nickerson, St. Simon of Cyrene Episcopal Church
"One of the reasons I donate is because the kind of work you all do is so important to the church (Episcopal and others) and to the people. The programs are both helpful and essential to the people. One of St. Simon's blood pressure programs was started because of all of PHM's help, and it has helped so many people.

Spiritual Corner
"The more you live at one with yourself, the more easily you understand profound truth. Why? Simplicity opens your mind to light and to wisdom from God. A pure, single-minded, stable spirit does not distract easily, even when very busy. You do all to honor God. You rest inside. You do not try to make yourself look big. What actually causes inner conflict? Trying to work for God and for yourself at the same time. Good and devout people orient themselves ahead of time to responsible action. Reason, not mere emotion, orders that orientation."
