An e-newsletter for friends of Parish Health MinistryFall 2012

Welcome to our new e-newsletter layout. We have been looking for awhile to bring something a little more streamlined and easier to navigate. We hope we've hit the mark with this one. Let us know what you think - we'll be tweaking it as we go to ensure you get the information you want in just the right amount.

Serving Barefoot

by Chris VanDenburgh, MSN, RN, Faith Community Nurse
Exodus 3:5
"Do not come any closer," God said.  "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground."

How many times do we, as Christ followers, stop to remember that in our work, at our office, in our churches, or at home, we are standing on holy ground?

New Health & Wellness Team at Our Lady of Sorrows Church

Newly retired and having moved to a new home, Mary Frey joined Our Lady of Sorrows in 2011.  As a new member, Mary prayed for guidance to become involved in her new congregation.  As she prayed, she remembered the health ministry at her former church, St. Ann, in Groesbeck.  She was not a part of the team but felt they provided a much-needed service to the congregation.   While not a health care professional, Mary has a great interest in health and wellness and felt this was the direction God was calling her.

Communication Shouldn't Stop after the Doctor's Appointment
by Peggy Slade-Sowders, Living Well Senior Solutions

Good communication with your doctor and other healthcare providers is essential for maintaining or improving your health. Preparing for your visit, including a list of current medications ( supplements or over the counter medications also), symptoms you are experiencing and any questions or concerns you have is the first step. Writing down the answers to your questions and any changes made by the physician during your visit is important.

Yellow Dot: Time for Kickoff!

ERH Parish Health Ministry is bringing the Yellow Dot program to Ohio.  Yellow Dot is a program that will help First Responder Emergency Personnel obtain medical information about the person involved in an accident or other emergency involving their vehicle.  This will help to ensure appropriate and timely medical interventions during that first "golden hour" after an accident or emergency situation.   A Yellow Dot sticker is placed in the rear window of a vehicle to alert responders that a completed medical form along with a recent picture is in the glove compartment.

Packets are available for free to partnering churches by contacting your ERH Parish Health Ministry Coordinator.

The Total Transformation: Help for Parents

Why I Give to ERH Parish Health Ministry...

By Carol Westermeyer RN, BSN, Health Ministry Lead

St. Peter & St. Paul United Church of Christ, Cincinnati, Ohio

"Parish Health Ministry has provided so much to the congregation of St. Peter and St. Paul United Church of Christ . With their support and resources, we established our Health Ministry Committee in 2008. Our partnership with ERH Parish Health Ministry has given us all the educational training and tools for various activities for our congregation such as blood pressure screenings, walking programs, church bulletin and newsletter articles, to name a few examples.  There are continued learning opportunities at their support gatherings, as well as the sharing from Parish Health Ministry representatives from other congregations.  Without the support of ERH Parish Health Ministry, our congregation may still be 'wandering in the wilderness' of the morass of health care information and services that barrage our daily lives."

"Thank you ERH Parish Health Ministry!"
