Construction News
The author O. Henry said about New York City, "It'll be a great place if they ever finish it." As most of us know, New York City and Parkchester will always be a work in progress. However, an end is in sight to the current round of infrastructure upgrades along Metropolitan Avenue and Unionport Road. The upgrades, undertaken by the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC), include a rain garden on Metropolitan Oval, a complete reconstruction of the raised medians including a pedestrian ramp installation on Union Port Rd. at Guerlain Street, tree and shrub plantings within the raised medians on Metropolitan Avenue and Union Port Road, curb to curb roadway restoration in the three areas where new sewer lines have been installed, and much more. Project completion is expected by October 2013, except for seasonal landscaping that will take place Spring 2014. A complete description of work done can be found here.

In and Around the Community
The Ferragosto tradition goes back centuries, recognizing the end of the harvest season as well as engaging the community in Italian culture, and the traditions of family and friendship. More than 15 years ago, merchants of the Arthur Avenue/Belmont section decided to bring the Italian tradition to the Bronx to share Italian culture, traditions, music and of course, great food. Please visit the festivities with friends and family to experience first-hand the old-world charm and tradition of Italy and celebrate 100 years of Arthur Avenue history. The Ferragosto celebration includes traditional Italian Street Performances, celebrity guests, great music, kid activities, and more on September 8th from 11 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. | |
