Why come to PPP for your child's Flu shot?

In recent years the Flu vaccine has been recommended for ALL children 6 months of age and older. Here at PPP we administer 5000 or more doses each Flu season and work to get as many of our patients immunized as possible. The Flu vaccine is effective at preventing the complications of Influenza, even in the years when there is not a great match between the Flu strains in the vaccine and the strains circulating in the local area. We begin giving Flu vaccine as soon as we receive our first shipments in early August, knowing that the vaccine will remain effective throughout the upcoming Flu season.

This year you may have seen pharmacies or retailers advertising that you can receive a gift card or store discount for getting the Flu vaccine there. These stores may care about protecting your child from Influenza, but they are mostly interested in getting you inside their doors, knowing that once you are there you are likely to spend much more than the cost of the gift card or discount.

Before you choose to get your child's Flu vaccine at a store, consider these questions:

  • Will the store enter your child's Flu shot into the state registry of vaccines? Most don't, but we always do. Why is this important? If you child is seen at an Urgent Care center or ER in the midst of a Flu epidemic, the treating physician will want to know if your child has had the Flu vaccine. If you don't remember or aren't with your child, the physician can easily look it up in the state database.

  • Will the store be available to answer your questions after your child gets the Flu shot? No, but we are always available to answer parents' questions about redness, sore arms, fevers, etc.

  • Will the store contact you next year to remind you to get the Flu vaccine? Probably not. We let all our families know when Flu vaccine becomes available each year. We focus on the children with health conditions (like Asthma or Diabetes) that make them more likely to have complications from an infection with Influenza. The store doesn't know your child's medical history and doesn't care if they are at increased risk from Influenza.

  • Will the store be able to answer other questions about your child's health while giving the Flu vaccine? No, they have no healthcare relationship with you or your child. At PPP we are proud to be your child's Medical Home, the one location that takes a comprehensive view of your child's physical, mental and emotional health. We don't just give your child the Flu vaccine; we make sure all their healthcare needs are met.

  • Vaccinating against the Flu is a big part of our mission to keep our patients healthy. From August through the spring we expend a great deal of time and effort getting our patients immunized, offering Flu clinics throughout the week and on Saturdays. Every patient who enters the office for check-ups, sick visits or even just accompanying a sibling is offered the Flu vaccine. We are happy to take on this task every year because we know the value of protecting everyone against Influenza.
Finally, if your child does get the Flu vaccine somewhere besides our office, like a store or at school, please send us a message through the web portal with the date the vaccine was done. This allows us to update your child's vaccine record and make sure we can do our job to serve as your family's Medical Home.
