Students Apply Research Skills to Tackle Non-Fiction Text
Performance Academies students become experts in decoding and understanding both fiction and nonfiction text. Here, third grade students at Eastland Performance Academy in Columbus were "nonfiction specialists," and they performed "nonfiction text feature surgery." Each child received a nonfiction text, a "patient," and a critical care chart. Their job as "surgeons" were to find 5 text features and attach them to their patient. The students attached their feature with a Band-Aid and labeled it. In their critical care charts, they had to note which feature they found and why it is important to help readers understand what they read. Third grade teacher, Mrs. Grell said, "The students were engaged for 90 minutes straight; it was truly the best lesson I have ever taught."

Outdoor Education Supports Character Education and Ohio's Academic Content Standards
(and it's just plain fun!)
Each fall, Performance Academies 5th graders gather from around the state and spend time together at Camp Kern. At Camp Kern, students experience environmental science, early Ohio life, group interaction/cooperation, values education, and just being outdoors. The Camp Kern YMCA staff work closely with our teachers to customize a program that best serves our students. Fall is also a time where many of our schools take field trips to local farms and enjoy the wonders of nature and explore working farms around Ohio.

Middle School Students and Their Families Meet the Area's Best High Schools!
Performance Academies held its Fifth Annual Meet the High School Night in September. Each year, the region's top performing high schools are invited to our annual open house serving seventh and eighth grade students and their families. This special night is held to help PA scholars find the best high school for them and to help them achieve their goals and dreams. It also serves to help families navigate the world of financial aid, scholarships, complete high school applications, and be aware of deadlines and requirements to take placement exams and make school visits.

Martial Arts is a Cornerstone of the PA Program
Martial arts training and competition in Performance Academies is strong and continues to grow as a program. Learning the martial arts is a cornerstone of what we do to teach students focus, discipline, and self control. Students study proper forms, katas, competition in the martial arts, and respect, as they advance through the different belt colors and ranks.

This season and always, we are thankful for the nearly 3,500 K-8 students who learn, thrive and bring so much joy and wonder to all our campuses around Ohio. We are thankful for parents, grandparents, and families who help us form the strong school and home connections that make learning successful. We are thankful for teachers, school leaders, and staff who dedicate themselves to the profession of teaching.
