Educate Yourself About
The Canine Flu
As many of you already know, the Canine Flu has reached Minnesota. What does that mean? It means it's time for you to educate yourself on the virus if you have not already, and that you should start to take steps to ensure your pet's safety.
Canine Flu is similar to the human flu in the symptoms and how it spreads. Canine flu, like Bordatella (kennel cough), can be spread by sneezing, barking, coughing, or by exposure to contaminated objects like bowls and cages. Lower your dog's risk of infection by reducing her contact with other dogs, which can be done by avoiding dog parks, doggy day care, and boarding at kennels.
The symptoms of Canine Flu include coughing, excessive panting, exercise intolerance, nasal discharge, loss of appetite, laziness, fever, and difficulty breathing. If your dog shows any of these signs, make sure not to bring her to any area where she can infect dogs (dog parks, doggy day care, etc). Next, contact your veterinarian immediately. Try and make the appointment later in the day and go to the examination room immediately to reduce the risk of exposing other dogs in the waiting room.
