Popcorn
and Politics
Reserve your seat now, only 11 seats left! The Advocacy/Government Relations Committee held its first session of "Popcorn and Politics" on Friday, April 15, 2011 with key leader, State Representative Rick Jasperse. Representative Jasperse provided an update on the issues that were discussed during session then opened the floor to questions from those in attendance. The feedback was exceptionally good from those who attended. The Popcorn & Politics forum directly supports the committee's objective of providing an opportunity for members to engage elected officials and become informed on the political issues that affect our area.
Our next session is scheduled for Friday, June 17, 2011 with key leader Steve Gooch, Georgia State Senator-District 51. The session will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce board room. Seating is limited to 15 seats, only 11 seats left. These will be booked on a first come, first serve basis so reserve your seat now! |

Foothills IGA Market was the
first Large Business of the Month

L-R - Julia Jorns, Jeff Downing, Sandy Downing, Mary Gravitt, Steve Treadaway, Terri Reece, Sue Wilkerson
Pickens County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that Foothills IGA Market was the first Large Business of the Month. Mr. Jeff Downing was awarded a framed certificate at the May Membership Breakfast by Julia Jorns with Julia Jorns, CPA, LLC and sponsor of the Business of the Month program.
In January, 2002 this business opened the development and has become a community hub in its area in our county. Growth occurred to the point that in 2008 it was renovated, enlarged and added some auxiliary services including a pharmacy. In a small community and a small space it offers a similar selection of products and services that might be ascribed to a "Super Store". Variety and responsiveness to the needs and desires of the customer base account for this business success story.
This business employs between 40 and 45 of our county workforce depending on the season. The owner is an expert in his field having managed and owned this genre' of business his entire career. He was looking for a business to purchase when the developers of this property approached him about opening a store as the anchor in the development. He agreed and a new enterprise began right near home.
This businessman invests tremendous time and effort into our community. He served on the Chamber Board for 5 years: as president and as Marble Festival chair, and on the Government Relations and Small Business Committees.
He is a past president of Rotary serving the 2008-2009 year championing the Ferst Foundation. He serves on a number of boards including CARES, Family Connection, Hope House, and on the Georgia Food Industry Board for the past 9 years.
His business advice to new entrepreneurs is to know your business. You must complete due diligence to know what it takes to survive individually and as a business. Make a business plan and follow it. Be prepared times three over. And deliver a consistent product or service.
He is most proud of what the people in the store have accomplished. Every year they have earned the 5 STAR IGA designation. Less than 10% of the IGA stores achieve this. Out of the 75 stores in Georgia, only four received the award. It involves five in store inspections, four of which are unannounced.
Please join the Chamber in congratulating May's Large Business of the Month, Foothills IGA Market.
Nominations for future Small Business, Large Business or Non-Profit Organization awards are now being accepted. You can find a nomination form online at www.pickenschamber.com under the Economic Development / E-Friendly page or you can pick one up at the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce. | |
Seal of Responsibility Scholarships

Scholarship recipients included in photo, Jessica Bell, Matthew Cook, Julia Fann, Taylor Goble, Connor Johnson, Ethan Jordan, Christopher Kapelet, Justin Weaver, Jenny Wehunt
The Pickens County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that in the Pickens High School Class of 2011 there were 9 students who demonstrated high standards of personal responsibility during their high school career and were awarded the Seal of Responsibility Scholarships. There were 96 Ninth Graders, 44 Tenth Graders and 34 Eleventh Graders that also received the Seal of Responsibility Certificate of Recognition. These students have distinguished themselves in three important areas of personal responsibility: attendance, punctuality, and conduct. These three areas of responsibility have been identified by business, community, and educational leaders throughout the country as being among the most important qualities that high school graduates should possess. In fact, these personal characteristics are viewed by most employers and college admission officials as being equal in importance to what students know and are able to do when they leave high school.
For students to be eligible to receive this honor, they must meet the following annual personal performance standards throughout their high school career:
- Maximum of three (3) absences from school, excused or unexcused
- Maximum of three (3) late arrivals to school (i.e. tardies)
- No disciplinary referrals
The scholarships are paid with money raised at the Annual Chamber Golf Tournament held in March at Arrowhead Country Club. Chamber Members, community leaders, and supportive community members participate to make these scholarships available. The Pickens County Chamber of Commerce congratulates these students and wishes each of them much success in the years to come. For more information about the Seal of Responsibility please contact Denise M. Duncan 706/692-5600 or denise@pickenschamber.com.

PICKENS COUNTY LEADERS GRADUATE FROM THE GEORGIA ACADEMY FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
The Board of the Georgia Academy for Economic Development announces Pickens County graduates from the 2011 Region 1 Multi-Day Training Program. Class participants represented a number of professional and non-professional economic development fields, including elected officials, public servants, business leaders, educators, and social service providers from thirteen counties in Northwest Georgia. The Academy provided each of the graduates an opportunity to gain a unique understanding of the complexities of economic and community development on the local, regional, and state levels.
Pickens County graduates at the May 3rd ceremony included Ernie McArthur, Pickens County Chamber of Commerce Board and Jonathan Warner, Chattahoochee Technical College.
Created in 1993 by then-Governor Zell Miller's Development Council, the Academy assembles a cross section of economic development professionals and resources to provide this training in all twelve service delivery regions in Georgia. The Board of Directors of the Academy consists of 22 members representing public and private economic development organizations and agencies from across Georgia. Since its organization, the Academy has provided training for thousands of professional and non-professional economic developers around the state, and since 1998 the Academy has been offered annually.
"One of the goals for the multi-day regional Academies is to encourage multi-county cooperation," says Corinne Thornton, Executive Director of the Georgia Academy for Economic Development. "Many times the participants discover the issues facing their community are the same as those facing other communities in their region, and can then combine limited resources to address the issue."
Georgia EMC and Georgia Power provide facilitators for the program, and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs provides staff support to this important program
The Academy's multi-day program, taught one day a month over a four-month period, includes training in the basics of economic and community development, plus specialized segments on business recruitment and retention, tourism product development, downtown development, quality planning, redevelopment and other essentials for community success. In addition, the curriculum features specific leadership skills such as consensus building, ethics in public service, collaborative leadership and other segments needed for effective community leadership in economic development. Local elected officials receive certification training credits through the Association County Commissioners of Georgia and the Georgia Municipal Association for completion of this program, and the program is certified for CEUs through the UGA Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
The next Region One Georgia Academy for Economic Development will begin in February 2012. For more information on this, please contact Leamon Scott at 706-234-4571 or by email at leamon.scott@dca.ga.gov.

Disability Coverage for Employees - A Low Cost Solution That Communicates Caring Part 2
Last month, our article discussed the fact that most employees have some form of life insurance but are much more likely to need disability insurance in their lifetimes. Most do not realize that one out of three 30-40 year olds will endure a disability of 90 days or more before they reach age 65.
The problem is both businesses and families suffer when these events occur but employers can help these employees to protect their income. The solution: group or voluntary disability income products.
Group disability products allow an employer the opportunity of providing some level of income replacement for their employee, offering short term disability, long term disability or both, in many cases at a lower cost than the employee could purchase themselves.
With voluntary disability products the employer offers short and/or long term disability products to the employees at no cost to the employer, allowing them to purchase paycheck replacement on a portion of their income if they desire it. There can be some participation requirements with these but the absence of cost along with the benefit being available to those who truly desire it make this a great benefit to both the employer and the employees.
Some employers even allow their employees to consider Individual Long Term Disability Supplements. These are traditionally at no cost to the employer and allow qualified employees to choose to protect more than 60% of their income (but still well under 100% coverage). Some insurance companies give discounts if as few as three employees decide to take this type of coverage.
One item you will want to have your disability or tax professional address is whether or not your employees wish to have their disability premiums taken out on a pre or post-tax basis. If disability premiums are paid before taxes, such as through a Section 125 premium conversion plan, the disability benefits could become taxable in the event of a qualifying injury or illness. In addition, when disability premiums are paid after taxes the disability benefits may not be taxable and could be paid in full.
The best news is, there are discounts available on these products! Your local Chamber of Commerce is helping small businesses offer more affordable employee benefits insurance products through its participation in MemberCare AllianceSM, a statewide network of more than 130 Chambers of Commerce.
The MemberCare Alliance of Pickens County program includes a variety of other discounted insurance products, such as: group health insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, long term care and term life insurance. All these products are available through participating Chamber-member insurance agents. For more information on any of these insurance offerings, please call the Chamber, one of your participating Chamber-member insurance agents, or Purchasing Alliance Solutions, Inc., (the company that developed the MemberCare Alliance program) at 770-579-1214 or 1-800-782-8254 ext. 3035.
