DID YOU KNOW?
School Health Services values Wellness Initiatives that support health and promote learning. Spark, authored by John Ratey, MD, cites brain research that supports physical exercise and its positive impact on learning.
Twelve school nurses attended the Spark offering on professional development day at BHS to support this system-wide goal.
The National Sleep Foundation reports that in their nationwide survey studying the sleep habits of teenagers, roughly 80% of teenagers (ages 11-17) polled are getting significantly less sleep than the recommended nine hours needed for optimum physical, emotional, and cognitive functioning.
Tip: make sure your teen is shutting off his or her cell phone during sleep.
In October, 4,355 students were seen in the K-12 health clinics for illness, first aid, medication or special procedures. Of these students, 4,176 or 95.9% were assessed by school nurses, treated and able to return to class.
Visit our web page at www.brookline.k12.ma.us. At the top click on Enrolled Families and then Health Services where you may read about Health Services and download forms.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME
Parents frequently ask for guidelines for when to keep their children home with illnesses. Most germs have already been shared in the day or two before your child is feeling ill. Therefore, whether your child stays home may depend on his/her ability to carry on during the school day and the impact their illness has on the other student's health and learning in the classroom.
COLD (Upper Respiratory Illness): If your child has a constantly runny nose and lots of sneezing and coughing, and/or a mild sore throat, keep your child home until these symptoms lessen, usually 24 to 48 hours. Children with mild cold symptoms may attend school.
FEVER: If your child has a temperature of 100F degrees (37.7C) or more (UNMEDICATED), keep your child home until 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without medication (i.e.Tylenol, Acetaminophen, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve.)
FEVER and RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS: If your child has a fever of 100F degrees
(37.7C), a runny or stuffy nose, cold and/or cough, sore throat PLEASE keep your child home and consult your pediatrician. Notify your school nurse.
VOMITING AND/OR DIARRHEA: If your child has vomiting or diarrhea, keep your child home until 24 hours after the last episode.
CHICKEN POX: Vaccinated children have a small chance of having "breakthrough" chicken pox. Notify your primary care provider if your child has chicken pox and let the school nurse know as well. For a suspected case of chicken pox, keep your child home until all the scabs are crusty and dry or there has been a medical diagnosis of another cause of the rash.
TAKING MEDICATION: When your primary care provider prescribes antibiotics for Strep Throat, Bacterial Conjunctivitis or Impetigo keep your child at home until he/she has taken at least 24 hours of medication. Call the school nurse before your child returns to school.
RASH: If your child has an undiagnosed rash, keep your child home. Call your child's primary care provider and inform the school nurse. Once diagnosed, please consult the school nurse before sending your child back to school.
SKIN FUNGUS: If your child has a skin fungus (ringworm), keep your child home and contact your primary care provider. Your child may return to school if the ringworm is small and in a covered area. For exposed ringworm, your child may return to school after 24 hours of using the recommended medication. If possible, the affected area should be covered.

What is Math League?
Math League is a district-wide program for Brookline students grades 4-6. The regular Math League season will start the week of Dec. 5 and run until March 8. We will have practice sessions every morning (each day is focused on 1 topic) as well as a Thursday afternoon practice session. There are 3 meets in which Pierce competes against the other schools in Brookline. The meets are open to 5th and 6th graders, 4th graders can participate in the practices but not the meets. The meets take place at Devotion School, from 1:30-5:00, bus transportation will be provided to and from Pierce. The meets are: January 18, February 16 and March 6 (with a snow date of March 8).
Math League practices are a parent-coached activity. Starting Dec. 5, Pierce's team will have "practice" every morning, and on Thursday afternoon. There are 5 topics: Problem Solving, Geometry, Operations, Bases, and Patterns. Starting Dec. 5, each topic will meet on the same weekday each week. Kids select the topics they want to practice (typically 1 or 2 topics) and come each week on that day(s). The morning sessions are from 7:20am - 7:55am. The afternoon session will be on
Thursday from 2:25pm - 3pm. We will assign each topic to a day based on coach interest and availability.
There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, November 17th from
8:00-8:15 am, following morning announcements. The meeting will be held in
the pit for students new to Math League as well as students who
participated in the past.
Pre-season Math League, Grades 4-6 Beginning Nov 9th, pre-season Math League will begin. There will be 3 pre-season Math League practice sessions (on 11/16, and 11/30) on Wednesday mornings from 7:20-7:55 am in the PSED/Spanish room (upstairs, near the gym, the same room as last year). The pre-season practice will include practice problems from all five areas: Problem Solving, Geometry, Operations, Bases and Patterns. This will continue through December 2nd, when the regular Math League season will commence. Parents - Are you interested coaching Math League? If you have coached or are interested in coaching, please contact Tara Washburn (tara_washburn@brookline.k12.ma.us) or Ira Heffan (heffan@yahoo.com). An informational session for all Math League coaches will be Tuesday, November 15th from 7:30-7:55 am in the PSED Space/Spanish room (upstairs, near the gym) For questions about Math League, contact Ira Heffan, heffan@yahoo.com or ___________________________________________________________

HONOR A TEACHER AND SUPPORT THE BROOKLINE EDUCATION FOUNDATION
During this time of end-of-year giving what better way is there to honor a teacher than with a donation to the Brookline Education Foundation?
Let your child(ren)'s teacher(s) know that you recognize their efforts by giving to the organization that seeks out and supports innovation and leadership among teachers and administrators from preschool through grade 12.
Your gift enables us to provide educators with opportunities for continued professional and personal development and touches the teachers you honor in a very special way. In the words of a Lawrence School teacher:
"Following my trip to China, I certainly have a deeper understanding of the experience of my Chinese students, both of their home culture and of the effort of adjustment to such a different place."
Please visit www.brooklineeducation.org to honor a teacher today!
