Newsletter of Pilgrim Pines Conference Center and Camp Squanto
September 17, 2013
Dave Cairns
Greetings,

The evening temperatures are dropping and the leaves are turning.  Fall is upon us.  In this issue, you'll find many opportunities to plug into a retreat this fall.  I also encourage you to read about how our scholarship assistance aided a local church in sending kids to camp. In addition, you will be introduced to three new staff members.

All our staff look forward to seeing you this fall at one of the many retreats.

       Blessings,
Dave Cairns
Executive Director

New Faces at Pilgrim Pines

We've had three new staff members start in the past month.  Kim Anderson joined our staff as Guest Service Coordinator on Sept 16th.  Kim brings years of experience working as a church administrator in Keene, NH, as well as providing administrative support at a retreat center in GA.  Kim will be the friendly voice you hear on the phone and the face you see behind the front desk.  All registrations for Pilgrim Pines retreats and camps will be handled by Kim.

Each fall brings the arrival of our ministry staff interns.  Andrew Meeker is well known around Pilgrim Pines.  Having grown up at Bethany Covenant Church in Berlin, CT, Andrew has spent 5 summers working at Mayflower. In addition to working at camp, Andrew is also taking courses at Keene State.  Joel Brand recently arrived from Minnesota, where he was the summer program director at Covenant Pines Bible Camp.  Joel worked a total of 4 summers at Covenant Pines.  He is a 2013 Youth Ministry graduate of North Park University and grew up attending 1st Covenant Church in St. Paul, MN.

Please join me in welcoming these new staff members to Pilgrim Pines!

Hi Dave,

I wanted to write the team at Pilgrim Pines and Camp Squanto about my incredible gratitude towards your camp scholarship fund that our church was able to participate with this summer.  Last spring you came to the youth pastors at our annual spring get away to tell us how healthy and strong Pilgrim Pines scholarship fund was, and that you were hoping we would take advantage of it.  Because of the health of your scholarship balance, over fifty percent of our youth that attended were able to receive needed funds to attend camp Squanto this past summer.  A number of them were first time attenders!  One student who received scholarship money this summer said, "It was the best week of my summer!"  Another student that received a scholarship said, "I rededicated my life to Christ at this camp."

Because of your hard work for the kingdom of God our teens and children at Monadnock Covenant Church were able to have an amazing week of experiencing God and they were able to take another step in their faith journey with Jesus.  So please, pass my thanks onto all that made the camp scholarship fund so helpful for the students in my youth ministry this summer!  Your ministry is a blessing and a viable part of our church ministry.  It is a gift to be in ministry with you and the team at Pilgrim Pines and Camp Squanto!

Thankfully yours,

Kevin Kokx
Pastor of Youth & Families

As a result of the Marathon Fundraiser and a number of additional generous donors, there was an unprecedented amount of funding available for assistance in paying for camp this year.  And people responded to this assistance.  Pilgrim Pines has provided over $40,000 in financial scholarships during 2013, completely exhausting our fund balance.

While people responded to use the scholarships, others will now need to respond with funding to replenish the fund.  YOU can easily make a designated gift to the scholarship fund at Pilgrim Pines.

You're having a woman speak for the Mens Retreat? Yes. Judy Peterson is the campus pastor at North Park University in Chicago. She comes to this role after previously serving congregations in Wisconsin and Illinois. Judy is passionate about communicating good news in everyday language and travels across the United States and the world speaking to audiences about how to put feet to their faith. Her passion for walking it out took the form of walking across the United States for her internship toward her Master of Divinity degree at North Park Theological Seminary. While the walk across the United States, Judy first received the name "walking pastor."  It is her day-to-day desire to walk into the lives of others that continues to make the title well deserved. Judy is one of the most effective speakers you will ever hear.

Come and see the unique beauty that is New Hampshire in autumn. Good times, good food, good fellowship, and plenty of stunning vantage points await you during the Fall Foliage Retreat.  Dale Kuehne will be speaking again this year after rave reviews in 2012.  Our Wednesday day trip will take us to Quechee Gorge in Vermont and a visit to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. While in Vermont we will enjoy a fabulous lunch. We're looking forward to a great day as we travel the foliage-laden highways of beautiful New England.  This unique mid-week retreat is geared for the young at heart, but maybe not so young in years.   Contact the PP office 603-352-0443 for information.

Road Scholar Programs

Did you know that Pilgrim Pines has been hosting Road Scholar (former called Elderhostel) programs for over 20 years?  Road Scholars provide educational classes for adults on a wide range of subjects.  Pilgrim Pines hosts close to 20 courses during the school year.   The few examples of topics show how wide ranging the courses are:  "The Films of Ken Burns", "Celebrating the Autumn Tapestry and History of New Hampshire", "Greek Dramas", "The Great Depression".

What others are saying....
"Experience was much more than satisfactory and the staff was outstanding."
"Very Worthwhile!  I learned many new things."
"Originally, I came because of the location.  Now I come because of the kind, caring people who run the programs and the great instructors."

Looking for runners....

As many of you know, I ran the 2013 Boston Marathon to raise funds for camper scholarships.  While training, I committed that I would raise money for scholarships at every race I run in the future.  I challenge you to do the same. It is very easy to do....  Pilgrim Pines is registered with the on-line fundraising site Razoo.com.  Razoo allows you to create your own fundraising event and link it Pilgrim Pines.  You recruit donors to support you through Razoo, and the funds are directed to the Pilgrim Pines scholarship fund.  All gifts through Razoo are tax deductible and will be thanked from Pilgrim Pines.  If you agree to raise a minimum of $250, we'll send you a wicking race shirt to wear during your race.
