NOVEMBER 16, 2023

Dear Pleasantville Families,

Last week, students and staff recognized the contribution of our veterans through a variety of activities and classroom studies. We are truly grateful for each and every veteran who selflessly served our country and whose courage and bravery allow us to enjoy the freedoms and liberties we have today.

November is National Gratitude Month, a time to reflect upon the many positive aspects of our lives. And so, I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Pleasantville community–students, staff and families–for your focus on providing a school experience for students centered on developing the whole child and your continued support of our students.

Wishing you all a meaningful celebration this Thanksgiving.

For the youth,

Dr. Tina DeSa

Recognizing the Service and Sacrifice of Veterans

Lauren Davidson’s second grade class with Assistant Principal Michael Pinkava and special guest PFC Peter Fiumefreddo

Teachers throughout the district facilitated a variety of classroom activities focused on Veterans Day.

Tom Baffuto’s Military History class learned about the devastating effects of PTSD on veterans returning from war. It was a somber reminder that, while parades are held in observance of Veterans Day, many suffer as a result of their service. PHS senior Nate Wood was particularly moved by the lesson, especially the discussion that many veterans do not seek treatment and often have to endure prolonged waiting periods to receive assistance from Veterans Affairs. Nate commented,”We need to change the way we treat veterans in our community so they can get the help they deserve.”

AP Government teacher Melanie Hagey led students in mock sessions of Congressional Committees. The students crafted original bills representing the House Veterans Affairs Committee and Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. The groups also addressed veterans' experience with mental health issues and the need to expand access to services.

Middle school students watched short videos and discussed the history and significance of Veterans Day, while second graders at Bedford Road School were treated to a visit by classmate Joey Salanitro’s grandfather, PFC Peter Fiumefreddo. Mr. Fiumefreddo, who served with the US Army, chatted with Lauren Davidson’s class, and the students listened to an excerpt of a ceremony that took place on November 9 in which Mr. Fiumefreddo was inducted into the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame by the New York State Senate. Thank you for your service!

Students Lead Blood Drive

Senior Sarah Broege-Beamon helps with registration/sign in

High school students participating in the PHS ECHO (Encouraging Children to Help Others) Community Service Club worked with the PVAC Ambulance Corps and NY Blood Center to organize a blood drive on November 2 to support local hospitals. The initiative was led by science teachers Allison Steinberg and Stephanie Marra, who are co-advisors to the club. Angela Usobiaga from PVAC also was integral in bringing in donors. Club members assisted in registration, helping donors to the correct locations, and escorting them to the snack table after donating so they could refuel. Some students were able to donate as well.

Freshmen especially volunteered in force. Even though they were too young to donate, they brought in their parents and/or volunteered their time.

The student-led event collected close to 100 pints of blood for local hospitals. Ms. Steinberg explained the impact of each contribution, noting, “Each pint can help up to three individuals!”  The success of last year's drive led to PHS ECHO being recognized by the NY Yankees. Students and faculty attended a game where they received a banner and were publicly recognized for their successful blood drives. Keep on the lookout for the next drive, which will be scheduled for early March.

Fifth and Sixth Graders Transport the Community to a Whole New World

Middle school Chorus & General Music Teacher Robyn O’Brien could not be more excited by the “crazy demand” for tickets to the school’s production of Aladdin, Jr. Three sold-out shows beginning on Thursday will present the well-known Disney musical for family and friends.

So many people wanted to see the fifth and sixth grade students shine in this weekend’s production, that the decision was made to transform the final dress rehearsal into a full-fledged performance.

If you were unable to secure your ticket, here are some behind the scenes photos as students and crew, including faculty and parents, excitedly prepared for their stage debut. Note the stunning stage settings designed by committed and extremely talented parents.
