One of the many things that bond our community together and contribute to the Pleasantville Pride is our athletics programs. We are fortunate to have dedicated coaches, student athletes, staff, families and community members who represent our district at both home and away competitions.
Athletes, friends, and families deserve to play and support teams in an environment that is safe and encourages unity within the community. The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) (Section 52.2, Part 80 and 58-4) states clearly that students be provided “with an environment free from harassment, bullying [including cyberbullying] and discrimination, as well as foster civility in public schools.” Athletic competitions are school-sponsored events, regardless of their location, and we are responsible for ensuring compliance with DASA.
In addition to DASA, expectations are outlined in the District Code of Conduct and in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Handbook. We are committed to safeguarding our students, coaches, officials and all in attendance at school events. Any comments or behaviors that either create a hostile environment or are prohibited by the Code of Conduct or NYSPHSAA will not be tolerated. We will address inappropriate behavior with actions commensurate with the situation, and that may range from a warning to removal from the event.
It is an honor and a privilege to play, coach, and watch games in our district. Behavior that runs counter to good sportsmanship undermines the value that sports bring to everyone involved. It is disruptive and a distraction to the accomplishments taking place on the field.
As a team, both on the field and off, we will succeed in raising our community’s youth to make decisions that build character and lead to lifelong growth. That is the real win.
Cheer loudly with pride and respect. Let’s go Pville.
For the youth,
Dr. Tina DeSa
Superintendent of Schools
