Every once in a while we experience a moment in which our hearts swell with overwhelming gratitude. Last week offered such an example, and we were reminded of how heroism is something we encounter unexpectedly on even the most seemingly average day.
Everyday Hero
Last Thursday, Luis Lizarzaburu, an aide at the middle school, noticed a student choking and unable to breathe. Luis sprang into action and administered the Heimlich maneuver, which effectively dislodged the food from the student’s throat.
At last night’s Board of Education meeting, I had the privilege of honoring Luis for his heroism and quick thinking. PMS Principal Don Marra spoke for all of us when he said, “From the bottom of my heart, I thank Luis for this heroic act!”
Rapid Dismissal Day
I also wanted to remind you that we are conducting a rapid dismissal drill today. All K-12 students will be dismissed at 1:30. This exercise is an important part of our safety protocols to ensure the well-being of our students in case of an emergency.
As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I once again want to thank everyone for their role in supporting students in our district. I hope you will take time to consider the many things for which we can all be grateful–family, friends, colleagues and a welcoming, supportive community.
