The days are shorter, the mornings are a little cooler, and our students are in their third full week of classes at Red Bird Mission School. These are signs that our busy summer filled with many positive activities is drawing to a close.

Our mission statement reads, "Red Bird Mission, guided by Jesus Christ, empowers individuals and advocates justice by providing spiritual, educational, health and community outreach ministries." Documented proof that our mission statement is a "living" statement is found in the stories of the August 2012 issue of Red Bird Notes that is now posted on our website.

You'll read about our new dentist that miraculously appeared in God's perfect timing, about the hundreds served this year by our Tri-County Health Fair, and about one of our partners, Hear the World Foundation. The story of our new kindergarten teacher confirms for us that Red Bird Mission School is a worthwhile priority. The testimony of one of our craftspersons is evidence that marketing of crafts is not just an economic program, but is a ministry at Red Bird Mission.

We believe these stories give assurances that your investment as a supporter is paying off for God's kingdom. We hope that you will continue to support Red Bird Mission with your prayers and contributions.
Families Celebrate Agriculture Projects
Ag project participants enjoying home-grown, home-cooked dishes. Almost 50 participants attended the annual end-of-summer picnic for the Red Bird Farmers Project and Grow Appalachia outreach ministries. A variety of dishes made from home-grown vegetables and meats assured that no one went away hungry that evening. Some even went away with a door prize.

In addition to shared dishes, families shared their livestock and gardening experiences with one another. One grower shared the joys of goat milk production while consoling another family with the loss a milk cow needed to feed their children.

Karen Dial, Ag Projects Coordinator, affirmed the hard work of the gardening families in Grow Appalachia and applauded the families for sharing their produce with neighbors. It was noted that there had been an increase in farmers market sales due to a grant-sponsored voucher program that gives a $4 coupon to low income families coming to shop at the Red Bird Mission Community Store on market day.

Red Bird Farmers Project participants were encouraged to learn the simple guidelines for marketing their meat and eggs at farmers markets. They were also challenged to pursue direct marketing to local schools through the new initiative in Kentucky that promotes direct sales from farm to school.

Red Bird Farmers, initially funded by Heifer International, continues to grow but contributions are still needed to help buy seed stock and other materials needed for production start ups.

More photos of the picnic can be viewed in the Agriculture Album of Red Bird Mission's Facebook page.

Promise Neighborhood Initiative

Red Bird Mission's Women and Children Ministries has provided after school programming at Red Bird School for the past few years, but funding from the Promise Neighborhood Initiative of Berea College is taking After School to a new level. Twenty-five students attended the kickoff "bash" on August 21st to meet the artists. Beginning September 11, professional artists will provide opportunities for youth to learn specific arts skills and explore creative expression.

Four different artists will come every other week to work with elementary and teen students in separate groups. The elementary team will focus on pottery projects. The middle and high school artist team will assist students in selecting a theme (or themes) that they can explore and express through song writing and abstract art. In the final two sessions, students will
either create a "puzzle mural" consisting of individual paintings, or write poetry, personal narratives, or journal entries reflecting the same themes that emerge in their mural pieces.

At the conclusion of the project, parents and community members will see the unveiling of the mural, an exhibit of student art, a reading of student writings, and possibly a performance of the student-created musical CD.
