Welcome to February. We have had a stretch of beautiful weather lately, with temps in the high 60's and low 70's, without much wind. Great weather for whale watching, fishing, or a walk on the beach. We get an extra day this month, and if you happen to be born on leap day, you get to celebrate a birthday too.

As a side, Fun Fact: The leap year was introduced in the Julian calendar in 46 BC. However, around 10 BC, it was found that the priests in charge of computing the calendar had been adding leap years every three years instead of the four decreed by Caesar. As a result of this error, no more leap years were added until 8 AD. Leap years were therefore 45 BC, 42 BC, 39 BC, 36 BC, 33 BC, 30 BC, 27 BC, 24 BC, 21 BC, 18 BC, 15 BC, 12 BC, 9 BC, 8 AD, 12 AD, and every fourth year thereafter, until the Gregorian calendar was introduced (resulting in skipping three out of every four centuries).

Leap years are every 4 years except that leap years divisible by 100, like the year 1900, are skipped unless they're also divisible by 400, like the year 2000, in which case they're observed. Nobody alive remembers the last lost leap day, but dropping those three leap days every 400 years keeps the calendar on time.

The New Year is moving right along and despite this traditionally being the "slow" time of year, there sure is a lot going on around town. The biggest thing to come to mind, of course, are the cruises taking place, beginning and ending right here in Rocky Point. What a fabulous treat it is to see the ship anchored just off shore of Sandy Beach. They departed yesterday for the 3rd and final cruise of this winter season schedule for the CMV company cruises. Our sales team has been very busy as well, with multiple closings last month and multiple closings coming this month. Don't forget to visit our sales office while you're in town J

Besides the cruises, Roger Clyne and many other very talented musicians graced us with their annual January Jam concerts series around town. As always, the venues were packed with happy, fun loving, folks enjoying the weather and the great music. Next up for Roger and friends in town will be Circus Mexicus, coming in June. Of course, I will give you plenty of time and plenty of information prior to that time in order to be prepared to come and join in the fun, even if you missed January Jam or Circus Mexicus shows in the past.

Today is the annual Seafood Festival "Fish Bowl" and Mermaid's Market at Shrimp Park. If you're able to visit, be sure to get there early, and bring your appetite. Carnaval 2020 is coming up at the end of the month with parades, rides, live music, art displays, and lots of culture, Boobar has their 6th annual poker run on the 3rd, Valentine's Day brings lots of great restaurant specials and romantic dinner options, Rocky Point Rockies Baseball season starts, there is a car show, SADR race, and always horseshoes, live music, sunset and whale watching cruises, beach combing, shell collecting, and so many ways to enjoy yourselves, that it is impossible to list them all. In short, this is a great month to visit!

Enjoy this beautiful month, come to Rocky Point as often as you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and re member, as always, I've been here full-time for over 12 years now, and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Astoria Completes Two Round-Trip Cruises, Heads Out on the Third

The first two of the three cruises scheduled for this season have returned and the overall reviews from passengers have been overwhelmingly very positive. The relatively small and intimate ship seemed to be just right for most who headed out for the 11 night cruises.

The company who brought the cruises to Rocky Point, Cruise and Maritime Voyages, mainly offers cruises from areas with a customer base within a few hours' drive, which is fits the bill for the Puerto Penasco cruises, only between 3 and 4 hours drive from Phoenix and Tucson. About 70 percent of the passengers on the inaugural cruises were full-time or part-time Arizona residents. Many took advantage of a CMV promotion that kicked in round-trip charter bus service from Phoenix and Tucson to Puerto Peñasco.

Passengers commented on the comforts of the ship, despite its age, the fantastic staff, who went above and beyond in making everyone happy and comfortable, and the very good food, but the overwhelming compliment given about the adventure was the great selection of the ports of call. Since this is a smaller ship, it was able to visit less frequented areas, which are not overrun by tourism and still retain so much of their original charm and heritage.

Other than the bustling ports of Cabo San Lucas and Mazátlan, few cruise lines have ventured to the stops in the Baja California region of Mexico. Astoria calls at under-the-radar spots including Topolobampo, La Paz, Loreto, Santa Rosalia and Guyamas, in addition to the marquee ports of Cabo San Lucas and Mazátlan.

Here is a description as posted on Facebook by one of the passengers:

No wonder there was such fanfare upon our arrival. Local musicians, dancers, singers and, of course, municipal officials, greeted the ship at most stops, creating a welcoming, festive atmosphere. Crafts and food vendors set up around the ports or in nearby town plazas. Happily, with few exceptions, there was nary a tout or a hustler in the crowd. Just helpful locals who seemed genuinely happy to welcome visitors for the day.

In La Paz, we strolled the recently expanded 3.5-mile Malecon (seaside promenade), where electric bikes are free for the borrowing. In Loreto, we discovered a well-preserved historic center that is a pedestrian-only refuge. In tiny Santa Rosalia, founded in 1884 by a French mining company, we explored Gallic trappings, from its metal church said to be designed by Gustave Eiffel, to its French bakery, where mesquite-fired ovens have been turning out treats since 1901.

Like our destinations, MV Astoria fell under many of our fellow passengers' radar. Launched in 1948, it's the second-oldest cruise vessel afloat and gained notoriety in 1956 as the ship that collided with the Andrea Doria, killing 51. The ship was gutted and refurbished in 1994.

Despite its relatively small size, Astoria packs some big-ship amenities, including a gym and spa with sauna and steam rooms, a show room and a separate auditorium. It also boasts attributes many modern ships lack, like a full promenade deck, bathrooms with full-size tubs and bidets, plus elegant trappings such as Murano glass light fixtures, Carrara marble floors and solid brass railings.

To the chagrin of some historic ship-lovers, CMV announced the day after our debarkation that Astoria will be leaving its fleet at the end of 2020. So one thing to keep in mind for those concerned about an older ship: If the line does continue Sea of Cortez itineraries next year, they'll be aboard a different vessel.

All that's lacking to make Rocky Point a bonafide cruise port is a physical port. Nevertheless, Cruise & Maritime Voyages' (CMV) Astoria set out for the 11-night Treasures of the Sea of Cortez sailing, ferrying passengers to and from the shore via tenders.

Plans for port facilities that would make Puerto Peñasco Mexico's first homeport have long been in the works. But completing the port is dependent on federal funding, which has been buffeted by changing political winds. When -- and if -- it is completed remains to be seen.

CMV vice president John Dennis said future Astoria cruises aren't contingent on completion of the port, but tendering to shore is a "short-term solution." The line is still assessing whether it'll return to these waters in 2021, he said.

CMV had originally scheduled three additional December 2019 cruises aboard the 550-passenger Astoria, but canceled them, officials said, due to dry-dock issues in Europe.

The Oldest Cruise Ship on the Seas is Retiring. Here's a Look at its Crazy History

The MV Astoria is the oldest cruise ship currently sailing, and Cruise and Maritime Voyages embraces the story of its vintage vessel. It employs an on-board historian to offer lectures about the ship's fascinating past.

And now it appears that 2020 might be the storied ocean liner's final season.

Cruise and Maritime Voyages said it will not renew its contract to use the ship and that this will be its farewell season. Astoria started 2020 with three brand-new Sea of Cortez sailings from Puerto Penasco, Mexico, and it will finish the year with trips from England in March, April, September and October.

Commissioned by the Swedish America Line in 1944, the ship originally was named the MS Stockholm and was the largest cruise ship built in Sweden at that time. It made its maiden voyage on Feb. 21, 1948, sailing from Gothenburg to New York.

Here's a look at memorable moments from the life of the MV Astoria.

The sinking of the Andrea Doria
The MS Stockholm is best known for its part in one of the worst maritime disasters in history.

On July 25, 1956, the Stockholm left New York for Gothenburg. Along the coast Nantucket, Massachusetts, it encountered thick fog. The Andrea Doria, was nearby, on its way from Genoa, Italy. Both ships made last-minute turns that resulted in the Stockholm T-boning the Andrea Doria. Because the Stockholm was built as an ice-cutting ship, it sliced nearly all the way through the Andrea Doria.

The wreck killed 46 people instantly on the Doria and five crew members on the Stockholm.

The SS Isle de France was traversing the area and changed course to help rescue passengers. It saved 753 passengers from the Andrea Doria before the ship sank. Although the Stockholm's hull was badly damaged, it stayed afloat and rescued 500 passengers from the Doria.

The Stockholm was rebuilt and in the 1960s, USA TODAY reports, it was sold to the East German government and renamed Volkerfreundshaft, or "friendship between nations."

The Communist Party used the ship to give leisure cruises to party officials, sailing the Baltic Sea as well as to Cuba. To prevent defections, cruise passengers weren't allowed to travel with their entire families. However, when cruising Western waters, it was not uncommon for the ship to lose defectors fleeing to find freedom in other nations.

Sweden housed refugees on the ship
By 1985, the ship was called the Volker and was widely expected to be taken out of service.

However, in 1986, the Swedish government need a ship to house an influx of refugees from Pakistan, Iran and Syria who were seeking asylum.

The Swedish government bought the ship, towed it to Oslo and renamed it, Fridtjof Nansen, after the Norwegian explorer.

In 1994, the equivalent of $150 million euros was spent to renovate the ship from top to bottom.

Attacked by pirates

In 2008, the ship - now the MS Athena - was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia.

In 2015, Cruise and Maritime Voyages contracted to use the ship. On Jan. 9, 2020, the Astoria made the first of three 11-day sailings from Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, also known as Rocky Point. This was the first time a cruise ship operated in Puerto Peñasco.

In January 2020, the cruise line said it wouldn't renew its contract and 2020 would be the ship's farewell season after completing sailings from England to Iceland, Scotland, Norway and the Baltics.

Peacemakers Let Loose at January Jam

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers rocked Penasco January 17-19, 2020 while performing 3 straight nights and hosting a charity golf tournament for about 1800 people.  Joining RCPM were Cruz Contreras, Andrew Leahey, Hourglass Cats, The Jons, Drew Cooper and Jason Boots popping up at stages all over town.

Not only did Saturday night bring the biggest show to the outdoor stage, it was also announced that the fans of Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers had surpassed $100,000 usd in charitable giving for the people of Puerto Penasco since 2008.  Fundraisers have included the Mexican Moonshine Tequila Golf Tournament, The Shake Raffle & Roll raffles, Roger Clyne's Beach Soccer Tournament and PH Naffah's Hot Dog & A Smile barbeque.

"Like most charitable events, you start out slow.  But once people started seeing what their financial support does for the community while having a lot of fun, the momentum picked up quickly.  We can't thank fans who come down in January and June enough for their support of those in need in Penasco", commented Lisa Cusick who directs most of the efforts.

Plans are finalizing for the return of RCPM's Circus Mexicus June 4-7, 2020.  This 4 day party will feature more than 25  bands playing at 8 different venues around Penasco.  The Friday and Saturday main stage shows will be held directly behind Banditos.  Tickets will go on sale in March at  www.circusmexicus.net .

Barrett Jackson Scottsdale 2020 Wraps up with Impressive Numbers

The Sonoran Resorts Official Sales Team has become a fixture at the Scottsdale Barrett Jackson Show and last month was our 8th year in co-sponsoring the show with our information booth proudly displayed in the main area. Once again this year, Sheri Jaymes represented our beautiful beachfront resorts listings to the thousands of folks from around the country and around the world who visited the show to bid on a vehicle, or just to watch and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

If you missed the show, you should definitely put it on your list of things to do next January. Even if you don't have a passion strong enough to prompt you to buy one of the fantastic offerings at the show, it is a fun time and the amount of charity dollars that they raise every year is truly amazing and inspiring. And, of course, if you do go to the show, you must stop by to say hello to Sheri (presuming that she will represent us again next year). In case you wondered what "truly amazing and inspiring" numbers look like, read on:

As soon as the last car sold, our friends at Hagerty began calculating the results. after pulling an all-nighter, here is Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2020: By The Numbers

Starting the week off strong was a classic 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with 8,000 miles for $110,000. The iconic Ford GT (2005-06) are also regaining their rightful value. A low mileage example finished in Midnight Blue with silver stripes hammered for $451,000.

You've been told to buy an old Toyota Supra for sale because a 1990 MKIII Turbo went for $88,000. The Paul Walker Collection was comprised of five 1995 M3 Lightweights, and the lowest-mileage car sold for $385,000.

There were over 5,600 bidders and thousands of spectators. Craig Jackson and his team enjoyed their highest-grossing week in the company's history, despite many charities receiving 100% of the hammer price on several million dollars in donation bidding.

With a cumulative total of $137.1 Million, 1,909 lots sold, with only 1 car not finding a new home. With a sell-through rate of 99.9%, the average sale price was $71,833. So without further adieu, here are the top 10:

Blue Fluorescent Reflections on Puerto Peñasco Beaches

Those of us who have the privilege of living in, or simply visiting, Puerto Peñasco were treated to a wonderful spectacle at the beach recently, as waves seemed to take on a blue fluorescent effect due to the presence of bioluminescent microorganisms or plankton, which react with the motion of the waves.

Although this phenomenon has occurred before on our coast, sometimes it is more noticeable than others. Such was the case on January 20th, when a blue fluorescent glow surprised beach visitors in Las Conchas, some of whom who were able to capture it in pictures.

In an explanation for this natural occurrence, Paloma Valdivia from the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO), offered the following:

"It is more or less normal for Puerto Peñasco, although on this occasion it was very intense. These microorganisms are called dinoflagellates, also known as "sea sparkle", and they generate a luminescence. Sometimes, when plankton reproduces in large quantities it produces these "blooms", and when there are many of these organisms the bioluminescence becomes more intense."

This particular spectacle is unpredictable and there isn't a specific time as to when it occurs, although in Puerto Peñasco this phenomenon has taken place in the past during winter.

So, whenever you are at the beach make sure you have your camera with you! You never know when this might happen, and it's just one more wonderful gift from the Sea of Cortez!

2020 YSF Annual Major League Coaches Baseball Clinic Comes to a Close

By Rick Busa, President YSF

The 2020 YSF Major League Coaches Clinic held on Saturday, January 25th in Puerto Peñasco was one of, if not the most successful clinics yet! The final count had over 150 kids in attendance, 9 coaches from the major leagues, and the teams that drove from El Golfo and Sonoyta. With numbers like these, how could it not be a success!

The Youth Sports Foundation of Puerto Peñasco would like to thank: Pete Hartmann, Troy Pearce, J.D. Ramirez, Mitch Talbit, Javier Gamboa, Juan Medina, Jack Spradlin, Leo Acosta, and Brian McNichol for donating their time to help the children of Peñasco to better their baseball skills. We also thank the local coaches who took time of their schedules to help make this clinic a success.

Thank you Pete Hartmann for asking for and receiving all sports equipment donations and making sure they were delivered. and Maria Garcia who without her organization this clinic would not have been a great success.Thank you as well to the following sponsors: Gringo Travel who donated the dinner for the coaches at Manny's and makes traveling in Mexico easier for the gringos, Sonoran Resorts who graciously donated condos to the coaches and their families, Boo Bar who is always there to help with equipment storage and snack and beverages, Rocky Point 360 who makes sure I get this right, Head out to Rocky Point for helping to bring all the equipment to Rocky Point, Pro Alliance Insurance and Rosie Glover who does a great job as our MC, Sonoran Resorts who graciously donated condos to the coaches and their families, the City of Puerto Peñasco, the Municipal Sports Office, Max's Restaurant, Manny's Restaurant, Reggie's 8/12 for their breakfast burritos, Coffee Point, Gua Gua's for all the beverages for the kids and coaches, and La Arena for sponsoring the Meet and Greet on Friday night. A special thanks to all the parents! Without them taking their children to practice, to their games, and to our clinic, this baseball clinic would not be as successful.

Next year we will be celebrating our 13 year anniversary. If anyone would like to help sponsor this event, please contact Rick Busa at 638.112-4399 or email him at rbusa1972@gmail.com , Pete Hartmann at 602-705-5698 or email him at pete20@hotmail.com. On behalf of The Youth Sports Foundation of Puerto Peñasco, I would like to thank everyone who participated in this event and all the sponsors that donated their time and money to make this event happen. With the success of this year's clinic, next year will be even bigger and better. See you
January 30th, 2021 for the next YSF Annual Baseball Clinic!

Parking Meters in Malecon

If you find yourself looking for a place to park in the Malecon, be sure to bring some peso coins because you're in for a surprise. The City recently installed parking meters in front of all of the parking spaces in that area. Initial reactions have been very mixed, with some people angered at the City for wanting to charge in the place that has always been free.

Others see it as a good thing that will free up more parking for visitors to the area, because in the past business owners and vendors took up many of the spaces all day, every day. The meters will very likely reduce the number as it will get expansive to feed the meter every day, though merchants are angry because there is very little parking in the area.

The meters will be patrolled from 9:00 am until 10:00 pm during week nights and until 2:00 am on weekends. Tickets will be issued to vehicles parked at an expired meter. The initial cost of parking is set at $17 pesos per hour (about 90 cents). Only time will tell if the new City dual-strategy or collecting new fees and freeing up parking, works or not.

The document issued by CBP, completes approval the proposal for the project presented by the Municipal Government of Puerto Peñasco, in an effort called "Modernization of the Border Crossing" as well as by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Urban Development called " Puerto Border Sonoyta. "

Mexico's Most Famous Entrepreneur Celebrates 80th Birthday

Carlos Slim Helú, one of Mexico's and the world's leading entrepreneurs, turned 80.

Slim's business education started when he was young: his father gave him and his siblings a bank book along with his allowance, as the story is told on carlosslim.com. From then on, Slim saw savings and investment as an integral part of his life and eventually rose to become one of the world's mightiest business magnates.

Slim ranked 11th on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index at the end of last year, with a fortune valued at US$61.5 billion, to which he added $6.72 billion in the past year.

His realm embraces the telecommunications, infrastructure, energy and building sectors, among others, thanks to such firms in his possession as Telmex-Telnor, the subsidiaries of América Móvil; and the conglomerate Carso which runs such companies as Grupo Sanborns, Carso Infrastructure and Construction (CICSA), Grupo Condumex and Carso Energía.

The market value of his companies added up to $82 billion, a 2.5% jump over the past five-year period, according to Bloomberg.

It isn't just his astronomical net worth that sets the business magnate apart, but also his proximity to key political figures, among them President López Obrador.

Slim has successfully forged agreements with the current administration, as was the case when his companies IEnova, TC Energía and Grupo Carso renegotiated gas pipeline contracts with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

In addition the businessman has also demonstrated interest in working on infrastructure projects initiated by the current government, such as the National Infrastructure Investment Accord.

The reality is quite different for his telecommunications firms, however, as the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has mandated the splitting up of Telmex-Telnor to form a new company, which cannot be subsidized, as a result of measures that were put into effect in 2017.

Another disciplinary action is in store for Telmex on the same basis that could result in a fine of up to 5 billion pesos.
More Than 2.2 Million Foreign and National Tourists Visited the Beaches Of Puerto Peñasco During 2019

2019 was a positive tourism year for Puerto Peñasco, having welcomed over 2,221,298 visitors according to lodging estimates. This represents revenue of more than 107 million dollars in the tourism sector, for services and hospitality across the city.

Lizette Ibarra, Director of the Puerto Peñasco Convention & Visitors Bureau (OCV), stressed these figures reaffirm Puerto Peñasco remains the preferred beach destination for the southwest region of the United States, and that it continues to gain popularity in California.

She explained although figures were maintained at a similar level to 2018, there was a 4% growth in foreign tourism, which represents 60% of the number of tourists that visit Puerto Peñasco each year.

The reasons why Puerto Peñasco attracts so many foreign and Mexican tourists are clear: beautiful and warm beaches, hotel infrastructure, and cuisine. Chefs across Puerto Peñasco prepare dishes with fresh products from the Sea of Cortez for all who visit our destination. This, along with the positive attitude towards visitors and our proximity to the largest cities in Arizona, make Puerto Peñasco certainly a safe destination that is close and easy for everyone to enjoy.

2019 was crucial for the formalization of projects that are now a reality for Puerto Peñasco, such as the arrival of the Astoria Cruise Ship in the Sea of Cortez. The ship successfully sailed three times from Puerto Peñasco on January 9 th, 20th, and 31st with the ship at or near capacity, mostly Americans, representing a new tourism market.

Efforts were also made to resume air connectivity with the city of Tijuana, Baja California in the first half of the year. This in turn would further connect Puerto Peñasco with California and other countries.

Another important fact to note is that as of September 2019, a total of 425,046 private vehicles crossed through the Lukeville, Arizona-Sonoyta, Sonora border, most of whom were headed to Puerto Peñasco as their destination.

Puerto Peñasco continues to lead the state in collections from the 2% hospitality tax. This is the result of positive promotion the Puerto Peñasco OCV carries out at a national and international level, with the firm purpose of positioning this tourist corner within new markets while maintaining frequent visitors.

In Mexico, Telephone Companies Now Prohibited from Sales Calls and Text Messages to Users

Almost everyone has a cell phone these days, and almost everyone has been annoyed by sales calls and text messages from countless faceless companies trying to sell a product or service. In Mexico, the powers that be have decided to do something about the problem.

Every telephone company in Mexico is now prohibited from calling or texting their users to offer promotions, announced the Official Mexican Standard (NOM) 184.

According to information from El Universal, the new regulation known as NOM 184 directs that phone companies who provide telecommunication services must refrain from making calls or sending messages to their customers.

Many feel that the law still falls short though as telecommunications companies can make calls to customers of other companies to offer their services. Exactly what this means and how it will change if and how often messages and calls are received by customers remains to be seen, but in the eyes of some advocacy groups, leaving an option to allow the pesky calls is giving the companies an "end around" way to continue business as usual.

There is, however, a bit of an "end around" for users as well. Many people receive several calls a day from various companies who offer their services or cell phone promotions. Few know how to stop these calls from coming. To avoid this, users who wish to do so must register their number in the Public Registry to Avoid Advertising (REPEP) of the Federal Attorney General's Office (Profeco). This is Mexico's Do Not Call list.

Telephone companies, such as Telcel and Movistar, have a "Black List", as compared to USA lingo, a "Do Not Call" list, to which a user's number can be added by making a request to the REPEP.

Between July 1 and September 30, 2019, the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) received more than 2,000 complaints from mobile phone users who received unwanted calls, and most feel that this new law is long overdue.

The Mexican Peso in Review 2019, and Prospects for 2020

Mexico's peso remained remarkably stable during 2019. Its prospects for 2020 depend on a range of factors which cannot be easily foretold.

The peso-dollar exchange rate remained reasonably stable in 2019, despite a lack of economic growth and a lot of noise in the news about the financial difficulties of the state-owned oil company Pemex, which could also cause problems for the government's international credit ratings.

The lowest the dollar fell against the peso was about $18.75, and the highest rate was $20.15 pesos per dollar, making it the smallest range between minimum and maximum rates in 10 years.

The exchange rate at the end of 2019 closed at $18.90 pesos per dollar; when in 2018 it closed at $19.66. The average daily exchange rate in 2019 was $19.26 pesos to the dollar, compared with an average daily exchange rate of $19.24 in 2018: when measured using a daily average, data show that Mexico's pesos has remained remarkably stable over the last 24 months.

Several things helped to make the peso one of the best-performing currencies against the US dollar in 2019. The government made efforts to keep to its budget deficit targets, even when this meant holding back some spending to avoid having to take on new debt. Tax revenue was less than expected because the economy didn't grow.

The Bank of Mexico started cutting interest rates, but these remain relatively high and encourage buying of peso-denominated government bonds by investors seeking returns on their money. Other sources of dollar income -including international travelers and remittances from Mexicans abroad- increased despite the economic stagnation in Mexico, and the trade balance was positive, i.e., Mexico exported more goods than in imported.

Things that could help the peso this year include the ratification of the US, Mexico, Canada trade agreement, which was negotiated to replace NAFTA. By reducing -but not eliminating- the risk of US trade sanctions, the agreement could encourage investment in Mexico which has been lacking. An improvement in economic growth would help government finances, as would success by Pemex in raising its oil production. Conversely, the opposite outcomes for these events could be negative for the currency.

According to the central bank's December poll of private economists, the exchange rate is expected to end this year at 20 pesos to the dollar, although that estimate will almost certainly change as the year progresses, since the forecasts tend to move with observed rates. As mentioned before, exchange-rate predictions are subject to many uncertainties, and are seldom accurate.

The Bank of Mexico publishes indicative daily rates for the peso against a number of other currencies, including the Canadian dollar, the euro, and the yen.

Mexico's peso is a free-floating currency on world foreign exchange markets; it's among the world's top-10 most-traded currencies and is the most-traded of Latin America's currencies.

Why, Arizona... Why?

This unincorporated community in southern Arizona of just over 160 people (as of the last census) always ranks high on the list of weird town names in Arizona, and often makes the list for the most unusual place name in the country.

So where does an off-kilter town name come from? There are a couple of theories about the name's origin that float around, but, believe it or not, the most repeated answer comes down to highways.

Why sits at the junction of state routes 85 and 86 in southwestern Arizona, just north of the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Tohono O'odham Nation. Back in the day, that intersection was a "Y" intersection.

According to some sources, people in the area got used to saying they lived at "the Y," referring to this junction.
When the community was big enough to warrant a post office, residents told authorities that their community was called "Y."

The only hiccup was the law required all communities have a name consisting of at least three letters. So residents came back with "Why." Same sound and just the right number of letters. Problem solved.

Years later, the intersection of state routes 85 and 86 was moved slightly south and reconfigured for safety, removing that "Y" naming impetus all together.

But that legacy lives on every time someone heading to or from Rocky Point sees a sign with the community's name and stops to ask: "Why?"

Apple Pie Tacos

But first, a bit of taco history

The word taco comes from the Nahuatl word 'tlahco' which means "half or in the middle", referring to the way it is formed.

Delicious and historic, the taco forms part of the cultural and gastronomic diversity of Mexico. Whether it be an al pastor, carnitas, longaniza, cochinita, barbacoa, birria, carne asada, chicken, chile, nopal with cheese, grasshoppers, avocado, and many, many more. The taco has an incredible variety that suits all kinds of tastes, and it is a heaven for those who can't tolerate gluten. Almost everything in Mexico starts with corn. Although its origin is unknown, it is believed that the taco was born as the basis of an Olmec diet thanks to the first traces of nixtamalized corn.

In an interesting interview with Jeffrey M. Pilcher, researcher and professor at the University of Minnesota, he recounts his findings in regards to the history of taco. For the past 20 years, Jeffrey has been devoted to the investigation of Mexican food, he is about to publish a book called "Global Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food" (edited by the University of Oxford). Some of the results of his investigations point to interesting chapters like some of the following.

The oldest table of nixtamal comes from the year 1,500 BC and was found in Soconusco, Chiapas.
It is said that Moctezuma used the tortilla as a "spoon" to hold the food, which were prepared on hot stones and decorated with cochineal, beans and chili. While women used to send food to their men who worked long hours in the fields and could heat it and eat it half a day later, wrapped in tortillas.

"And as a celebration for the arrival of the Spanish caravels and their pigs", according to Bernal Díaz del Castillo, "the banquets organized by Hernán Cortés for their soldiers were based on pork dishes with tortillas." In fact, in True History of the Conquest of the New Spain, Coyoacán witnessed the first taquiza (taco party) in history. Since then, the taco became the base dish consumed in all areas of the Conquered "New World".

It was not until 1908, in the State of Morelos, that the revolutionary era brought the emergence of the armored tacos: tortilla, a bed of rice and finally a stew of pork rinds in green sauce, smoked pork, mole verde, sausage, potato with chorizo and many others more which brought unexplained pleasure to the palate. It is said they were born Cuautla, Morelos, eventually finding their way to its capital Cuernavaca.

In the 1950's, during an economic crisis and shortage of jobs, the residents of San Vicente Xiloxochitla, in Tlaxcala, began selling the famous basket tacos. In fact, this site became the capital of the basket cue; where dozens of taqueros (taco makers) with their bicycles are seen every morning reaching their points of sale in the nearest municipalities. They leave their homes with a basket loaded with tacos, covered with a small tarp and with some bottles of red and green salsas to sell to the workers, students and employees, who find them on their way to school and work.. There are even those who take vans, carrying bicycles, basket, jars and coolers, to keep them warm, allowing them to reach more remote areas such as Mexico City, Puebla and Hidalgo, etc.

Finally, in Puebla, tacos al pastor are born - the undisputed adaptation of the Arab shawarma to the Mexican palate. Between the 1930's and 1960s, during a large Lebanese migration to Mexico, an attempt was made to recreate the foreign dish, however they had to resort to marinating and changing the type of meat according to the ingredients available in the city. The tacos al pastor come, in fact, from the gyros of Greece, the döner kebab from Turkey and the shawarma from Lebanon. Who could have thought that one of the most prevalent dishes in Mexican culture had a common origin in the cuisine of the Ottoman Empire?

The taco, in its entirety, is part of the Mexican culture that provides, in addition to being food at an accessible price, it also brings nourishment to the body.

Mexican cuisine has endless styles, flavors and colors; it is so extensive and multifaceted that it has been named as an "Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. The Taco has become the symbol of Mexico's cuisine.

Eating tacos is an art, "the art of eating with tortilla." Any day is a good to enjoy them... and as that famous Mexican saying goes: "A taco is not denied to anyone".

And, while the Apple Pie Taco, may not have such a long and rich history, it sure does look good. So, here's the recipe in case you want to make some...

You'll Need:

Apples peeled & sliced
½ C Sugar
2 tsp Cinnamon
½ tsp Nutmeg
½ C Water
Tortillas (flour) 6" size
Oil (for frying tortillas)
1/2 c sugar-cinnamon mixture
Whipped cream

Steps:

Place apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and water in a sauce pan.

Stir until well blended and cover and cook on medium stirring frequently

For 10 minutes or until apples are semi soft. If needed, thicken sauce using
1 Tbl of cornstarch to 3-4 Tbl of water. Mix into sauce and stir until thickened.

Heat oil on medium heat in a skillet and holding the tortilla folded in half, place the bottom on tortilla in the oil for a few seconds. Then lay it on one side until browned and then place other side down until browned. Remove from oil and Sprinkle browned tortilla with sugar-cinnamon mixture.

Fill taco shells with apple pie filling and top with whipped cream, and sprinkle a little more of sugar-cinnamon mixture on top.

Meaningful Mexican Proverbs

Con dinero baila el perro.

Meaning: With money the dog dances.
This is one of those two-sided proverbs. That is, it's got more than one meaning.
To some, it means that everybody has a price. Pay enough and even a dog will dance.
It also means that if you work hard to get paid, you'll be happy. You might even be happy enough to dance!

El que con lobos anda, a aullar se enseña.

Meaning: He who runs with wolves will learn to howl.
You're influenced by the company you keep.
And yes, this is a proverb that many of us hear a lot from parents and grandparents during those teenage years!

Desgracia compartida, menos sentida.

Meaning: Shared misfortune, less felt.
This is similar to the English proverb, "Misery loves company."
When sorrow is shared, it's easier to bear-at least that's the implication of this proverb!

Al mal tiempo, buena cara.

Meaning: To bad times, a good face.
The power of positive thinking crosses cultures. This is a saying that reminds us to be positive even through the hard times.

En boca cerrada no entran moscas.

Meaning: No flies enter a closed mouth.
It basically means to keep quiet, mind your own business or don't comment on something that you know nothing about.

Cuando el río suena es que agua lleva.

Meaning: When the river sounds, water is running.
This one's similar to the "Where there's smoke, there's fire" maxim.
It's often used to mean that if you want to get to the truth of something, go to the source.

A darle que es mole de olla.

Meaning: To give you mole de olla.
This is such a great cultural tidbit. It means that you need to have enthusiasm for whatever task is before you.
Mole de olla is a traditional Mexican soup. It's nourishing and tasty and is a staple for many families. In short, mole de olla is widely eaten and well-loved!
It's considered to be a fine addition to one's life, so when something's compared to the soup, it must be something worth doing.
This soup doesn't just pull itself together; it's not a recipe for beginners. So to many, this proverb indicates that a task might be lengthy or difficult but it's still something worth doing.

Más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo.

Meaning: The devil knows more because he is old rather than because he is a devil.
In other words, wisdom comes with age.
This one's really popular, which can tell you heaps about the way the culture sees its elderly. If you spend any time in Mexico, you're sure to hear it!

Más vale un pájaro en mano, que cien volando.

Meaning: A bird in hand is worth more than one hundred in flight.
This is similar to the well-known "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" proverb you've probably heard in English.

Lo barato questa caro.

Meaning: Cheap is expensive.
Invest wisely so you don't need to replace a cheap item. In other words, buy quality and you won't need to buy the same product again when it inevitably falls apart.

Zapatero, a tus zapatos.

Meaning: Shoemaker, to your shoes.
This is a nice way of telling someone to mind their own business.

El que busca encuentra.

Meaning: If you search you will find.
Look for what you want out of life and you're sure to find it! The key is to actively go out there and do something, rather than sit around waiting for something nice to happen to you.

A falta de pan, tortillas.

Meaning: Lack of bread, tortillas.
If you don't have bread, use tortillas. Although honestly, this has little to do with either bread or tortillas!
It's all about making due with what's on hand. Use what you have and it'll work out!

Poco a poco se anda lejos.

Meaning: Little by little one goes far.
This adage shows that progress comes with commitment. Keep at it and you'll go far.
