From myself and the entire Sonoran Resorts family, I wish everyone a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! Besides being a new year and a new month, we're entering a new decade today as well. The past year, and the last decade for that matter, have been very good, and I look forward to this brand new one that will be even better.
Despite what some of the media is saying, things are great here. Rocky Point is safe and fun and beautiful, and aside from some pretty chilly weather and a couple recent rain storms, things couldn't be better. This year, just as in years before, there are a ton of visitors in town for the holidays who, I'm sure, would agree with me. Most of the New Year's Eve celebrations around town seemed to have been very busy and some of them had sold out weeks ago.
Our very own Sonoran Sky Restaurant, Cielito Lindo, held a special New Year's Eve party, with pretty limited seating. Live music, a four course meal, open wine/beer bar, and a fabulous fun atmosphere, prompted the tickets to sell quickly and, though I was unable to attend, I heard that it was a wonderful celebration of the arrival of the New Year. Unfortunately, some on the waiting list were not able to attend, so next year, please reserve your tickets early if you want to be assured a place.
Last year was another great one for the Sonoran Resorts, as well as for most businesses around town, from what I have seen. There have so been many new restaurants opening, new ventures starting up, existing companies expanding, and increasing tourism year after year, that it's hard to keep up. But, I do try to check out as many as I can. And, there are so many new and exciting things coming, just around the corner during this New Year. It's exciting and I can't wait, yet time goes by so quickly, that I hate to wish for time to go any faster than it already does.
There is a lot to talk about again this month. Our Food Drive has officially ended and we will be delivering the donated food within the next couple days. Thank you to everyone who donated. Rocky Point's first cruise ship is on the way and the first cruise will be leaving port on January 9th. Whale watching season is here again and the tours have already begun. Lots of events this month as well, with one of the main events being the Annual January Jam, organized by Roger Clyne and Peacemakers. You will definitely want to come visit if you can. And, as always, we're here enjoying life work at the beach, so stop by one of our sales offices to tour a few condos when you get the chance.

Cruise Ship Astoria Heads Towards Puerto Penasco
After a stay in Rotterdam, according to the Cruise and Maritime Voyages website, CMV Astoria is underway in its journey, crossing the Panama Canal, to reach its final destination in Puerto Penasco.
While the cruise line that offers "Treasures of the Sea of Cortez" had modified its original timeline from December 2019 to January 2020, it is now on its way to our little city on the sea. The January cruises scheduled have departures on the 9th, 20th, and 31st. It is anticipated that this first cruise line to use Puerto Penasco as its base for departure and arrival will spur more interest in future cruises from this company and more. Everyone in Puerto Penasco looks forward to this successful first set of cruises and wishes the company and all passengers traveling the very best trip.

After Another Successful 2019 Rocky Point Rally, Impressive Donations Delivered
After another very successful Rocky Point Rally last November, totals have been calculated and the impressive donation was delivered to nine charitable institutions in Puerto Penasco and Sonoyta, on December 16, 2019. Donations have traditionally been delivered on December 16, all the way back to 2004.
The charity institutions receiving this support are: Puerto Peñasco Red Cross, Puerto Peñasco Fire Department, DIF Peñasco, DIF Sonoyta, Senior Citizens Home "José Davalos Valdivia", "George Papanicolau" Medical Services Group, "La Montaña" Care Center for Disabled, and the Mexicali Student House and College Scholarship program operated by DIF.
Oscar Palacio Soto, President of the Organizing Committee of the Rocky Point Rally, in the company of representatives of the Puerto Penasco Municipal Government, OCV, and sponsoring companies, participated in the ceremony. Palacio Soto commented that he was very happy with the results obtained in 2019, and grateful that the event was able to donate again to the community of Puerto Peñasco and Sonoyta.
The funds donated are obtained through the registration of motorcyclists during the rally event, that in itself a challenge requiring many volunteers, as riders arrive at all hours of the day and night and sometimes in great numbers together. Registration is not required but it is highly recommended and does come with several benefits and money saving offers.
Mr. Palacio explained that for this year's Rocky Point Rally, he intends to improve the system of motorcyclist registration in order to make it easier and to increase revenues in order to continue supporting these important institutions which provide so many great services to the community.

Strong Support Shown for Lukeville-Sonoyta Border Crossing Improvements
With the support of more than 1,200 businesses and professional firms of Puerto Peñasco, as well as from the American community, a request was sent to the Customs and Border Protection Office asking for the urgent opening of a SENTRI lane at the Lukeville - Sonoyta crossing.
The request which was recently sent to the Customs Office expressed the urgent need to expand a SENTRI lane allowing fast access for frequent travelers in order to avoid the all too common congestion and long wait times when crossing from Mexico into the USA.
This heartfelt request was strengthened by the signing of an agreement with hotel, restaurant, and business sector owners, managers, and employees, as well as both full and part time residents of Puerto Peñasco, the American community and tourists.
The collection of signatures was promoted by agents of the Office of Conventions and Visitors of Puerto Peñasco and was carried out in several locations such as in the border of Sonoyta-Lukeville. Americans returning to Arizona had the opportunity to stop and sign the petition at the border crossing. There were also petitions distributed to various businesses and interest was high on social media sites. There was also a kiosk set up in Rocky Point at Shrimp Park in order to gather signatures. The OCV also arranged signature collection through the digital platform, change.org, which promoted online for people interested in signing the petition.
In a meeting held with business leaders, it was announced that on the Mexican side of the crossing, an access boulevard will be built heading up to the checkpoint, which will be completed by the year 2023, however hoteliers displayed strong interest to acquire Federal funding in order to complete the work more quickly. They stressed the importance of modernization by no later than early 2022 due to the very high traffic use, which continues to grow every year.
It has not been uncommon for tourists returning after a holiday weekend to wait up to 4 hours to cross the border back into the USA. Many visitors have begun extending their trips until Monday in order to lessen the wait, and at this time Mondays have begun to feel the strain of heavy traffic as well. Time will tell if the port will receive a SENTRY lane, but it is clear that improvements need to be made, sooner than later, in order to keep up with the growth of Puerto Penasco tourism from the North.

US Consul General qualifies Puerto Peñasco as Safe Destination

During a recent visit to Puerto Peñasco, United States Consul General Virginia Staab stated that certain events registered in Sonora over the past few months will lead to changes in wording on travel advisories issued by the U.S. State Department, though affirmed that Puerto Peñasco is safe for tourists to visit.
Staab stated this after holding an informative "town hall" meeting on Dec. 10
th with US citizens living in Puerto Peñasco. These town halls seek to develop constructive dialogue with the US Consul, answer questions, and address concerns of the American community.
At the meeting, Staab addressed concerns of US residents regarding information on insecurity circulating on social networks, noting these problems are being addressed in exchanges and in coordination with Mexican authorities. She noted in some cases, information found through social networks is misinformation.
Precisely because of this, she emphasized, the Consul continues to visit Puerto Peñasco every three months to clarify doubts the U.S. community residing in Puerto Peñasco may have.
Just before the Town Hall of the United States Consulate in Nogales, a Passport Fair was also held for citizens of the United States seeking to renew their passports or seeking notarial support services.
While emphasizing Puerto Peñasco is a safe place for visitors, the US Consul from Nogales acknowledged the perception of insecurity following the incident in Bavispe, Sonora (near the state line with Chihuahua) against members of the LeBaron family in early November. She also recognized the negative impact on the area following reports of clandestine graves.

The US Consulate Nogales District is the northern part of the state of Sonora, extending 600 miles from Agua Prieta in eastern Sonora, to San Luis Rio Colorado in western Sonora, and about 60 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Puerto Peñasco: Film Site in Vogue
Puerto Peñasco's imposing sun, dunes, sea, sunsets, volcanic areas, and infrastructure are the main attractions that have made this port city the setting for grand-scale film projects.
The film industry has turned its gaze toward Puerto Peñasco to take advantage of its natural beauty, proximity to the border, and ease offered so that production companies can set up for movies, documentaries, and television series.
Though this port had already been the setting for films in decades past, the interest and arrival of production companies has been accentuated over the last five years. This is evidenced by movies such as: "Sonora" by Alejandro Springall, which showcases the majestic Elegante and Colorado craters; "Barcos de Papel" starring Pedro Damian; the rom-com "Infelices para Siempre", starring Consuelo Duval and Adrian Uribe; as well as the Netflix series "Run Coyote Run" and "Yankee"; and important documentaries about El Pinacate Biosphere, the dunes, and it's endemic species, made for Japanese productions as well as for National Geographic.
This boom is, in part, thanks to the infrastructure Puerto Peñasco offers to support this type of work, as well as accessibility provided by local authorities, the Convention & Visitors Bureau (OCV), and the state government through COFETUR.
Efforts made to promote the film industry in Puerto Peñasco have been such that collaborative and marketing agreements have been signed between Sonora and Arizona, aimed at making this a film region.
There are additional film projects already in the works that have made progress in scouting out appropriate locations for upcoming work this year.
Undoubtedly for both Puerto Peñasco and the region, projecting the beautiful landscapes and natural richness of the area through film positions it on a national and international scope, stirring interest in getting to learn more about this spot situated between the desert and the Sea of Cortez.

The Financial Requirements for Mexican Residency are Increasing in 2020
On January 1st, Mexico's minimum daily wage increases from $102.68 MXN to $123.22 MXN, which means that that the financial requirements for Mexican residency are increasing too. That's because the requirements are based on mathematical formulas based on the minimum wage.
The specific financial requirements will vary depending on which residency option you're applying for and if you have any special circumstances (e.g. family ties in Mexico).
For the purpose of this story, let's assume that you're the average retiree from the U.S. or Canada who wants to retire in Mexico.
Temporary Resident Card
You have a few options with this one. You only have to meet
one of the following:
Foreign Source Income (e.g. Pensions and/or Employment):
An average monthly income (after taxes) of at least 300 days of the Mexican minimum wage: 300 X $123.22 = $36,966 pesos, or about $1,945 USD*.
You must show proof (original documents and copies of each) for the previous 6 months.
Savings / Investments:
Investments or bank accounts with an average monthly balance of at least 5,000 days worth of minimum wage: 5,000 X $123.22 = $616,100 pesos, or about $32,426 USD*.
You must show proof (original documents and copies of each) for the previous 12 months.
Own Real Estate:
You own real estate in Mexico valued at over 40,000 days of minimum wage: 40,000 X $123.22 = $4,928,800 pesos, or about $259,410 USD*.
* Exchange rate used 19 MXN to 1 USD
Permanent Resident Card
Generally speaking, people who immigrate to Mexico are required to complete four years as a temporary resident, after which they can obtain their permanent residency; however, Mexico made an exception for foreign retirees/pensioners. They can apply for permanent residency right away - provided they meet all the qualifications.
You only have to meet
one of the following:
Retirement Benefit (e.g Pension):
An average monthly retirement income (after taxes) greater than 500 days of the Mexican minimum wage: 500 X $123.22 = $61,610 pesos, or about $3,242 USD*
You must show proof (original documents and copies of each) for the previous 6 months.
Savings / Investments:
Investments or bank accounts with an average monthly balance of at least 20,000 days worth of minimum wage: 20,000 X $123.22 = $2,464,400 pesos, or about $129,705 USD*.
You must show proof (original documents and copies of each) for the previous 12 months.
* Exchange rate used 19 MXN to 1 USD
Spouses and Dependents
You'll have to add 100 days of the minimum wage to the figures above per dependent. 100 x $123.22 = $12,322 pesos or about $648 USD*.
The process to apply for a temporary or permanent resident card will begin outside of Mexico at a Mexican consulate. They will review your application, conduct an interview and assess whether or not you meet all the requirements.
The financial requirements that the Mexican consulate gives you may not exactly reflect the listed U.S. dollar amounts above. They should be close but they may vary a little because the financial requirements are originally set in pesos and each Mexican consulate has to determine what the equivalent value would be in the local currency (e.g. U.S. dollars).
Setting those limits can be challenging because exchange rates are in a constant state of flux. To make things easier, the consulates simply choose an exchange rate to use for the year and then round the figures up or down to come up with their official requirements.
For example, a particular consulate might choose an exchange rate of 19:1 and come up with a figure like $1,945.57. That number is likely to be rounded up to something like $1,950 USD or even $2,000 USD.
Since these final values are set by the individual consulate, the numbers do vary from one consulate to the next. That's why you should always reach out to the specific consulate where you intend to apply to determine the currency values they're using.

Rocky Point Fire Department to the Rescue
On Saturday, December 28, a report came in that someone's pet dog had fallen off the cliff of Whale Hill. The Fire Department responded immediately and paramedic Carel Robles performed a controlled descent of between 60 and 80 meters off the side of the cliff face in order to reach the French Poodle named Prince, who was scared and afraid to move. Prince was placed in a rescue container and hoisted to the top, and into the arms of grateful owners, Roger and Shannell. Luckily, and with the help of the Fire Department, Prince is health and happy again.

Juan Francisco "Gallo" Estrada Re-injures Hand, Postpones January 30th Bout with Kal Yafai
WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada, from Puerto Penasco, had his sights set on a December 14th unification bout with WBA champion Kal Yafai, only for the date to fall through due to "El Gallo's" lingering hand issues. Matchroom then planned to host it on their January 30th Super Bowl weekend show in Miami, but Estrada's hand has once again forced a delay.
Estrada (40-3, 27 KO) has had issues with his hands before, and all we can do is hope that they don't cost the 29-year-old too much more of his athletic prime. Penasco is rooting for you Gallo!

Whale Watching Season Begins - What You Need to Know
Whale watching off the coast of Puerto Penasco is actually registered as a natural privilege and was recently authorized by SEMARNAT under the Official Mexican Standard that establishes regulations for the development of the practice of observation of this species.
The season in which whale sightings are historically recorded are from the beginning of the year and their presence in the area often lasts until the month of April. There have been sightings as early as November and after April, depending on temperatures.
A common visitor to the areas near Rocky Point is the grey whale, which follow the same general migration path each year during the winter months. The huge whales feed in the Bering Sea of Alaska during the summer months and arrive in our area during the winter to give borth. After giving birth, the whales return north to start this process again, a journey which allows many along the Baja coast and the California coasts the opportunity to observe the gray whales.
The black fin whale is the second largest marine animal in the world and is a frequent visitor to our waters, as well as the the humpback whales, which are usually more active and show greater mobility in the waters. During this same season, it is very common to see huge pods of dolphins swimming in the area, very frequently very near the beach.
In Puerto Peñasco, several companies offer tours to observe and marvel at these marvelous creatures. The two most popular companies are the Eco Fun and Del Mar Charters, and both are well known for their record of professionalism, safety, and adherence to required protocols. If you have not been out to watch the whales in the area, it is definitely recommended that you make an opportunity to do so. Bring a good camera and be ready because they can appear unexpectedly and may disappear just as quickly.
Although most tour guides have an excellent record of finding whales to observe, no boat capitan can guarantee that whales will appear.
Rules for Whale Watching:
*The boat must travel at a slower speed than the slowest whale at all times. In all cases you should avoid accelerating and decelerating sharply.
* It is prohibited to harass or damage the whales in any way, or to obstruct their course.
*Cause the whales to disburse or come between whales mating or a whale giving birth.
*No fishing, diving, swimming, water skiing, or parachute flying. Do not use jet-ski boats or jet skis, kayaks, small boats. No ultralight aircraft and helicopters are allowed for observation activities in the authorized areas.
*Do not dispose of any type of waste, including garbage or oils and fuels used in the operation of vessels.
* It is not allowed to collect, capture, hunt, retain or appropriate specimens of wild flora and fauna, or to introduce specimens of species, or transport specimens of species from one community to another.
* Companion animals are not allowed on board, with the exception of guide dogs.
* Do not feed the whales.
* Do not tow any type of object or drag ropes, lines, nets, hooks, or other similar attachment.

60 Years Ago, Arizona Pledged to be a Good Neighbor to Mexico. Here's Where We are Today

In 1959, a gallon of gas cost 30 cents, Dwight D. Eisenhower was president of the United States, Arizona had its most powerful earthquake, and Alaska and Hawaii become the 49th and 50th states in the union.
That same year, Paul J. Fannin became Arizona's governor and accepted an invitation from the University of Arizona and the University of Sonora to participate in the Arizona-Sonora International Conference. There, Fannin met Sonora Gov. Álvaro Obregón and together changed our region's history.
Cultural and trade discussions at the conference inspired Fannin and Obregón to create a permanent Arizona-Sonora Committee made up of two commissions - the Arizona-Mexico West Coast Trade Commission and its Sonoran counterpart, Comité de Promoción Económica y Social Sonora-Arizona.
This collaboration was a game-changer
At the first Arizona-Sonora Committee meeting Fannin coined the phrase "God made us neighbors, let us be good neighbors." It's a phrase that still rings true today, after six decades of shared successes, hardships, goals, friendship and family.
We have seen many great examples of collaboration that have resulted in game-changing projects for the region.
In the early years, engineers from Mexico's Ministry of Hydraulic Works toured Arizona to learn more about our state's successful hydraulic projects and joined together in our first binational agreement - a hydraulic water program to meet the ever-increasing water demands.
Decades later when the U.S. Hermosillo Consulate General office was on the brink of closing because of budgetary cutbacks, the AMC spearheaded efforts to save it. Those efforts not only saved the U.S. Hermosillo Consulate General but resulted in a second U.S. Consulate General in Nogales. To this day, Sonora is the only state in Mexico with two U.S. Consulate General offices to assist and protect U.S. citizens and to facilitate trade and friendship between the two countries.
Arizona and Sonora have shared many lighthearted moments through friendly sports exchanges ranging from Little League Baseball to collegial softball games. In 1968, Sonora gifted Arizona a statue of Father Kino, which now is in Tucson. It has a copper time capsule that is to be opened in the year 2235.
And in 1975, the commission sponsored the air-drop of 5,000 ping-pong balls over Hermosillo, Sonora, as a goodwill gesture and trade promotion for Arizona. One thousand balls were filled with gift certificates for many businesses in Arizona valued at $12,000. The outside of each ball read, "Para Sonora, Con Saludos - Raúl H. Castro, Gobernador de Arizona."
Arizona-Sonora ties are stronger than ever
Six decades later, the cultural and trade relationship between the two states remains strong under the leadership of our current governors, Doug Ducey of Arizona and Claudia Pavlovich of Sonora.
Mexico is Arizona's largest export market and it sends the largest number of visitors to our state. To that end, the two governors have worked diligently to advance cross-border trade, tourism, education and investment. For instance, they've established the border liaison unit to provide a safe and effective transportation network and the Unified Cargo Processing at ports of entry to speed up inspections.
Arizona and Sonora are in the business of making our region more prosperous through educational partnerships like the Higher Education Consortium between Arizona and Sonora's public universities which
The two governors have signed 13 memorandums of understanding between 2015 and 2019 ranging from public safety, transportation, quality of education, and joint efforts to promote tourism and economic development.
Lucid Motors chose Pinal County for its $700 million factory because of the proximity to suppliers in Mexico and a business friendly environment. The company plans to bring more than 2,000 jobs to southern Arizona.
Why signing USMCA is so important
Over the last few years, both economies have grown and our region has thrived. And today, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) stands ready to enhance this relationship.
In fact, governors Ducey and Pavlovich signed a joint letter to the federal legislatures of both countries urging the ratification of the USMCA. This modernized agreement establishes a trade framework for the digital age that would help Arizona:
The Arizona-Mexico relationship rests on a strong foundation, built with common intentions and mutual respect. Arizona is not interested in playing politics. We are focused on creating proven results that benefit the entire region.

Foundation Annual Baseball Clinic, which will be hosted by the Municipal Stadium at the remodeled
Francisco León García. The children from the entire region, are invited to a basic baseball clinic of about
three hours, they will participant with ex-baseball players and coaches who donated their time to do this
great altruistic work inspiring children to look for a future away from the streets and within a field of play.

baseball to bring their children to this unique experience, where small and small future talents of baseball
come together in Puerto Peñasco to enjoy a unique event by its type throughout Mexico. Likewise, we invite

This event has been taking place since 2009 initially at the initiative of a former major league player Scott
Steinmann and Rick Busa With the help of former mayor Alejandro Zepeda to provide them with the
Municipal Stadium facilities to invite their former Major League Baseball friends This year the appointment is
again on the aforementioned weekend of January 24 where the players will come to offer a press conference
that is TBD.
This year the call to start this unique clinic with former players and coaches of the best baseball in the world
for girls and boys of 7 years and older is called to start at 9;00 in the morning at the facilities of the Municipal
Stadium Francisco León Garcia for the registration of participants from the entire region, where there will be
no registration fee. There within the field will be divided into stations by specialties and position where the
boys and girls will have the opportunity to learn the basics of baseball directly from the ex major league
coaches and players who donate their time and effort to leave that seed of improvement in children
throughout the region, achieving that children can get away from the streets and bullets and follow a path of
sport.
Kids learn to stay off the streets, work hard, have a good work ethic and do not take
things for granted. "It's not where you start, it's where you finish"

McSally, Stanton introduce bill to waive permits, expand Mexican tourism in Arizona

TUCSON - Sen. Martha McSally and Rep. Greg Stanton introduced companion bills to create a pilot program that would allow visitors from Mexico to travel throughout Arizona, potentially generating up to nearly $1 billion in additional tourist spending over the next five years.
Mexican visitors with a Border Crossing Card are allowed to travel up to 75 miles inside Arizona without having to apply for a I-94 permit and paying a $6 fee. That means that, aside from the state's border cities, cardholders from Mexico essentially are barred from traveling beyond Tucson, which is located 60 miles north of Nogales.
McSally and Stanton's bills, dubbed the Southwest Tourism Expansion Act, would eliminate the need for a permit and fee by creating a five-year pilot program that would be specific to Arizona. It would allow Mexican visitors to travel anywhere in the state, including popular sites such as the Grand Canyon or Antelope Canyon in the northern part of the state.
"Arizona is open for business and when we allow approved visitors into more areas of our beautiful state, we unleash the potential for greater economic growth, more jobs, and additional sales tax revenue," McSally said in a written statement.
The bills have already drawn bipartisan support from Arizona's congressional legislation, as well as Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey who touted the proposal as "win-win" for Arizona's relationship with Mexico.
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., joined her Republican colleague as a co-sponsor in the Senate version. Meanwhile, Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., signed on to Stanton's House bill as a co-sponsor.
Stanton, who has pushed since his time as Phoenix mayor for changes to allow Mexican visitors to travel around the state without an additional permit, called his legislative proposal an "economic stimulus bill" as well as a "common-sense change" that would result in greater benefits, economically and otherwise.
"Our state benefits in so many ways from a strong relationship with Mexico," Stanton said in a written statement. "And a pilot program that invites Mexican nationals to explore and invest more throughout our entire state can only strengthen those ties."
The Arizona Office of Tourism reported that 3.8 million Mexican nationals visited Arizona for leisure in 2018, spending an average of $839 per overnight trip to cities all over the state, but mostly in Tucson and Phoenix.
The proposed change enjoys strong support from both state and local governments as well as economic groups around the state. The expansion has also been the subject of several studies to measure its potential impact.
The most recent report from 2015 was commissioned by the Maricopa Association of Governments and conducted by the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management's Economic and Business Research Center.
It projected that Mexican visitors would spend $2.9 billion in Arizona in 2016, with nearly a third of that money staying in Tucson and Pima County, according to tourism officials.
The report concluded that extending the travel limit to the entire state could generate up to $181 million in additional spending each year. That means that the pilot program created by the Southwest Tourism Expansion Act potentially could bring in an additional $905 million for the five-year duration of the program.
Once the pilot program concludes, the results would be assessed to make a determination about the program, according to Stanton's office.
Such changes wouldn't be unprecedented; in the past, the federal government has taken executive action to change the travel boundaries. The bills would be the first legislative attempt at changes, even though it would be a fixed-period of time.
The travel limit for Border Crossing Card holders in Arizona was expanded in 1999 from 25 to 75 miles. New Mexico's travel limit was expanded to 55 miles in 2013.

A Sea Story
In fitting with the upcoming first cruise ship to set sail from Rocky Point, and the arrival of a new year and decade, here's a fun little story about time and the sea.
The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo's position was LAT 0º 31' N and LONG 179 30' W.
The date was December 31, 1899. "Know what this means?" First Mate Payton broke in, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line". Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime.
He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship's position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line!
The consequences of this bizarre position were many:
The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer.
The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.
The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.
In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.
This ship was therefore not only in:
Two different days,
Two different months,
Two different years,
Two different seasons
But in two different centuries - all at the same time!

Tamales, a Step by Step Guide
What is in a tamale?
Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish made with a corn dough mixture (often maseca) that is filled with various meats. They are wrapped and cooked in corn husks (or banana leaves). Below you will find a recipe for pork tamales with a red sauce and chicken tamales with a green sauce.
Making tamales can be quite a process, especially in the traditional Mexican way where you make several different kinds, with different fillings, all from scratch.
Do you eat the whole tamale?
Tamales are wrapped and cooked in a corn husk. The corn husk is not something that people typically you eat. After making your tamale, you unwrap the corn husk and remove it. Then enjoy your tamale with pico de gallo, salsa, or other desired toppings.
How to make Tamales:
First make the dough (see recipe below). Once you make the soft tamale dough, spread it onto corn husks. You can use a piece of plastic wrap to spread it out into a thin layer. Remember that the corn husks are vital in cooking the tamales but they are NOT meant to be eaten with the tamales!
Next, add your favorite tamale filling. It is common to make tamales with a few different fillings.
Now you're ready to fold and cook them!
Fold in one long side of the husk about 1/3 over dough and filling. Fold in the other long side, overlapping the first (like folding a business letter). Fold the bottom of the husk up. You could tear an extra corn husks into strings to tie around the tamales, if you want, but it's not required.
The size is optional and many like them a little on the larger side because they can fit more filling in them. If your corn husks are small, you can overlap 2-3 together to make a bigger surface for spreading and folding the bigger tamales. You can make yours however big or small as you want. Just cook them for a few extra minutes if you make them bigger then stated in the recipe.
There are just two main steps to making homemade tamales.
1. The dough, called "masa"
2. the filling.
You can fill the tamales with whatever meat and sauce combination you like, or fill them with beans and cheese. Here are the recipes for a pork and red sauce filling, and a chicken and green sauce filling.
Tamale Dough:
Tamale dough is very easy to make, thanks to a product calledMaseca, which you should be able to find at your local grocery store in the Mexican food aisle. The dough also contains lard. Yes, I know, it might sound disgusting, but it is used in authentic tamales and it makes for great tamale dough. You can usually find lard in stores, near the shortening. You could substitute vegetable shortening for lard - if you must.
Follow the instructions for making the dough and then test to see if the masa tamale dough is ready by placing a tiny ball of dough into a glass of water - If the dough floats, it's ready. If the dough sinks to the bottom of the glass then beat it for longer and add a little more broth. Test again. The dough should spread like creamy peanut butter and be slightly sticky.
Choose your filling
:
If you're up for some authentic shredded pork and red sauce, follow the recipe below. The pork takes just a few minutes to throw together and cooks in the crock pot overnight. The homemade red sauce is also really simple and delicious.
Or, if you're looking for quicker filling ideas for your tamales, try the chicken and green sauce tamales recipe below. Just mix some shredded, cooked chicken with a bottle of Herdez salsa verde or similar product. You could also fill your tamales with a spoonful of refried beans and shredded cheese.
How to cook the tamales:
The tamales can be cooked in a steamer, or Instant Pot. Place them, open-end facing up, in the pot, packed just tightly enough to keep them all standing.
You can test if the tamales are cooked completely by removing one from the pot and pulling the husk off. If the husk comes off easily and cleanly, they're done! If not, you can steam them for a few more minutes.
Freeze your tamales for later!
Tamales make the BEST freezer meals for busy nights. Serve them with a batch of Authentic Mexican Rice and you'll be in heaven. To freeze them, allow the cooked tamales to cool completely, then stick them in a freezer ziplock bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.
When you are ready to eat, wrap the tamales in a few dampened paper towels and place them on a plate. Microwave them for 2-3 minutes or until warmed through. The wet paper towels will help them "steam" as they are reheated. Be careful when unfolding them-they will be hot!
Recipe:
Ingredients
For the Dough:
2 cups Masecas (aka Masa harina)
1 - 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth (or chicken broth)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cumin
2/3 cup lard
8 ounce package dried corn husks
Filling options:
Shredded Pork with red sauce (recipe below)
shredded chicken with green sauce (recipe below)
refried beans with shredded cheese
Authentic Mexican Rice , for serving, optional
Instructions:
Soak the corn husks in a bowl of very hot or boiling water for at least 30 minutes.
In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the lard and 1 tablespoon of broth until fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
Combine the masa harina, baking powder, salt, cumin; stir into the lard mixture and beat well with an electric mixer.
Add more broth as necessary to form a very soft dough. Beat on high speed for several minutes.
Lay a corn husk, glossy side up, on the counter with the wide end at the top. Scoop a big rounded tablespoon of masa (or more if you want bigger tamales) and place it towards the top-half of the corn husk.
Lay a piece of plastic wrap over the dough and use your hands to press and spread the masa into a thin layer, about 1/4 inch thick, along the top half of the corn husk.
Spoon a tablespoon of filling in a line down the center of the dough.
Fold in one long side of the husk about 1/3 over dough and filling. Fold in the other long side, overlapping the first (like folding a business letter). Fold the bottom of the husk up.
Add water to the bottom of your steamer or instant pot. (about 1 cup water, or enough to cover the bottom of the pot and not go above the wire rack.
Place tamales on rack in steamer or instant pot, standing upright, with the folded end down and open end up. Don't over-pack the pan, just pack them tightly enough to keep the tamales in an upright position.
Steam for 50 minutes - 1 hour in the steamer, or, if using an Instant Pot, cook on Manual for 18-20 minutes, depending on how big you made the tamales. Allow pressure to naturally release for 10 minutes, and then quick release.
For the pork:
- 1 1/2 pounds pork loin shoulder or butt
- 1 large onion , chopped
- 1 bay leaves
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For the Red Chile Sauce:
- 4 dried california chile pods
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 Tablespoon oil (vegetable or canola oil)
- 1 Tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
For the pork:

Place pork, onion, bay leaf, garlic, oregano, cumin and salt and pepper in a slow cooker.

Cover the pork with water and cook on LOW for 8 hours or overnight.
-
(If you would rather cook it on the stovetop, follow the same directions, adding everything to a large pot, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until pork is tender, 2-4 hours.)
Meanwhile, make the red sauce.

Use rubber gloves to remove the stems and seeds from the dried chiles while rinsing them under cold water.

Place chiles in a saucepan with 2 cups of water. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes, then remove from heat.

Transfer the chiles and water to a blender. Add oregano, cumin, chili powder, onion powder, garlic and blend until smooth. Set aside.

In the same saucepan you used to cook the chiles, add oil and cook over medium heat.
-
Add flour and salt and stir for 1 minute. Strain the chile sauce from the blender and add it to the saucepan. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes.

Drain the cooked pork (reserve the broth for use in the tamale masa dough, if desired) and shred the meat with a fork.
-
Add chile sauce to the meat, reserving 1/4 cup sauce, and stir in enough of the reserved broth to form a moist, spreadable mixture. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
For the chicken:
Ingredients
- 4 cups cooked chicken , shredded
- 16 ounces Salsa verde
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or string cheese)
Instructions

Combine shredded chicken and salsa.

Spoon filling onto tamale dough. Top with cheese. Roll and cook.

Top cooked tamales with extra green salsa, and pico de gallo.

Is Being Called a "Gringo" an Insult?
Gringo is... an interesting word.
As many people have pointed out, it isn't necessarily an insult. It's a shorthand way of saying someone comes from the United States, regardless of their skin color.
Gabacho works the same way.
If a foreigner quickly reveals that he isn't from the US, then the Mexican who called them gringo will often call them something else, often exhibiting an amazing lack of political correctness.
If the person is blond, then they'll become güeros.
If the person is black then they may be called negros. (Which, in Spanish, doesn't carry the same racial weight. It's just used as a description.)
The notable exceptions to this loose "rule" are Asian looking people (who will be called Chinos, regardless of their origin), or Mexican-Americans, who will be called pochos.
One thing with gringo and these other examples though: While they can be used innocently and in a friendly manner, they can also be used as an insult, and yes, it depends entirely on the intonation and the context.
It's safe to say pinche gringo is offensive, unless your Mexican friend says it laughing and smiling at you, in which case they're just having fun.
If they say it angrily, while complaining about something US people do, while actively making fun of them or when complaining about Donald Trump, chances are they are using gringo insultingly.
As you may have noticed already, gringo being a descriptor rather than a slur mean
s that it's very hard to come up with a "similar" word.
If you don't like being called a gringa, tell your Mexican friends not to do it. You'll be quickly promoted to "güera" instead. (You don't even have to be blond to be güera, by the way. Sometimes having light skin and light colored hair is more than enough)
And as for your Latina friend that makes fun of white people who can't roll their? Well, that's the topic of an entirely different conversation...
