Camaron (Old Documentary)
Camaron (Old Documentary)

March is here and that means the end of the cold weather that he have had for most of February. This has been the coldest winter in Rocky Point for several years and it's time for that to come to an end. March brings Springtime here and the weather always starts cooperating. The past couple days have already been much better so I'm thinking that the worst of winter is behind us. Of course, in a few months, we'll be crying about the heat and humidity. But, even with the unusually cool February and the hot July and August, this is is still my favorite place on earth and the one that I call home.

Another thing that March brings us every year is Spring Break and the fun-seeking young people that flock to town in order to enjoy some time off here in paradise. The three biggest crowds come from ASU, U of A, and NAU and their Spring Break dates are as follows: (ASU and U of A)  March 2 nd - 10 th :  (NAU) March 18 th - 22 nd. As you can see, ASU and U of A dates coincide this year so we can expect a double dose of people during those dates. Normally, Spring Break doesn't affect Sandy Beach nearly as much as other parts of town though, so if you're thinking of a trip down during those dates but you prefer not to be kept awake all night, you should be OK if you're staying in a condo on Sandy Beach. Maybe bring a set of earplugs just in case though :)

Whale Season is still in full force, although the time is probably limited now due to the weather and the ocean warming up. It has been another very good season for sightings and, as I understand it, just about every tour from the different captains going out have proved successful in finding the majestic creatures. There have been multiple sightings from the shoreline as well. If you've got a decent pair of binoculars and an oceanfront condo, chances are that you'll see dolphins, lots of different sea birds, and just maybe, some whales breaching the surface. Or, if you want a better chance at a sighting and a more up-close view, take one of the tours. They go out almost every day of the week. If you need help finding one, just let me know.

There is lots to do this month, starting out today with Rocky Point's 4th celebration of Carnival, as well as Mermaid's Market, Desert Dreams Car Show, multiple venues with live music and early Spring Break activities, and all that Puerto Penasco has to offer. This is going to be a great month!

Of course, the Tiki Beach Bar, La Cantina Sports Bar, and Cielito Lindo Restaurant at the Sonoran Sky will all be open and ready to greet you with multiple events and specials this month as well. Hope to see you here.

Cielito Lindo:
1 year anniversary (with live music) on March 15th starting at 5:00 pm
Now open from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm from Wednesday to Sunday
Live piano session from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm every Wednesday
Jazz trio playing live from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm every Saturday
Hector Trasviña and his guitar from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm every Thursday
Pianist and soprano presentation from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm every Friday

Tiki Bar:
Spring break beach party:

Respective Economic Society Chapters Cheer Arizona-Mexico Manufacturing

Arizona is increasingly gaining recognition as one of the most attractive areas for manufacturers, but in collaboration with Sonora, Mexico, the two states have positioned themselves as one of the most competitive export manufacturing locations in the world. The Phoenix chapter of Lambda Alpha International (LAI), a global economic society, teamed up with its Sonora counterpart, Consejo Nacional de la Industria Maquiladora y Manufacturera de Exportación (INDEX),
to host a forum recently focused on bilateral trade.

Combined with our neighbor to the south, the area is being touted as a "mega-region" in pulling together collective resources and highly-trained workforces to develop a major export hub. Other sectors including mining, automotive and health care are also contributing to the trend.

"The economic magnitude tells the story," Patrick Welch, attorney at Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, and presenter at the event, said. "But there's more than just the economics. It's a shared border, which makes us more than just neighbors, given the fact that there is shared heritage, shared culture, families are typically bi-national."

The Mexican manufacturing and factory (maquiladora) industry has been a historically thriving sector and INDEX and LAI are helping to strengthen the bridge between Arizona and Sonora to become a leader in the global economy.

" Specifically we focus on the maquiladora industry and their collaboration with U.S. companies," Past International President of LAI Steven Gragg said. " During this time of divisive political discussions about border security, it is important to balance the discussion with the positive benefits of economic trade between neighbors. The favorable impact on real estate projects on both sides of the border are tangible."

Another area of sympatico between Arizona and Sonora is that of the aerospace industry. Sonora manufactures 18.4 percent of the country's aerospace parts and is home to one of the fastest-growing aerospace industry clusters in the country, being the source of $110 million in export dollars in annual revenue in the last decade. The industry has created more than 9,000 private sector jobs, including some on the Mexico side of Nogales. The American side of the split border town is also home to aerospace jobs and is included in the southern Arizona regional trend of boosting employment and development in that sector as a whole, which has been courting companies to move or expand their presence in the Greater Tucson area.

Here in Arizona, thousands of manufacturing companies are pushing the economy forward while boosting job growth and setting the state up for even more deep-rooted growth in the coming years. What's more, Arizona manufacturing companies are opting for more tech-driven solutions to manufacturing, doing away with outdated assembly line methods.

The same thing is happening in Mexico, where the country is seeing more opportunities in manufacturing, including in the automotive realm. General Motors recently announced its push to head to Mexico for more building of new vehicles, opening the door for a more solid import-export relationship with Arizona.

"Our region is safer and more prosperous because of collaboration between Arizona and Sonora," said Gov. Doug Ducey in a statement. "Our deep history of collaboration has resulted in valuable cross-border initiatives that contribute to the quality of life for people in both states."

Together, Arizona and Mexico are leading in the automotive manufacturing industry, importing nearly $968 million and $761 million in auto parts back in 2016, with that number only rising. The industry supports around 51,000 employees who help produce nearly 1,500 vehicles a day.

Mexico remains Arizona's main trading partner, making up about 30 percent of our state's exports to foreign markets and about 37 percent of all our imports. This has helped outline a relationship based on sharing and competition in Mexico's consumer markets.

"The border, to a large extent, connects Arizona and Sonora, I don't think it divides us, I actually think it's a conduit," Welch said.
Governor Promotes Puerto Peñasco and Guaymas to Attract More Cruises

Boosting Puerto Peñasco and Guaymas as points of origin and destination for cruises that promote and strengthen the tourist vocation of Sonora, is one of the pressing objectives of Governor Claudia Pavlovich Arellano, who recently visited the Port of Barcelona to research and learn more from the third largest cruise market in the world. Barcelona receives 3 million travelers a year.

The agenda for the governor of Sonora addressed issues of investment in promotion, tourism, academic exchanges, and international relations. She visited the Port of Barcelona, accompanied by the Consul of Mexico in Barcelona, Maria del Carmen Onate, where they were received by President Marcé Conesa and several of her collaborators, who shared the experience that has led them to be one of the three most important ports in the world.

Governor Pavolvich learned about the operating system of the port: operations, tourism promotion, logistic operations, and she also shared ideas about the work that has been done in Sonora to promote Puerto Peñasco and Guaymas to the big shipping companies that may have an interest in expanding new routes.

Marcé Conesa explained that the Port of Barcelona is responsible for the presentation of general services, as well as the management and control of port services to ensure that they are handled in optimal conditions of efficiency, economy, productivity, and safety.

In the working tour of Spain, the Governor reached important agreements to benefit Sonora as well. She established an agreement with Aqualia to carry out a study, free of charge, on the conditions of the the drainage and sewer system in Guaymas in order to seek potential alternative solutions. This same company is the one that is making the first module of the desalination plant for the area of Guamas - Empalme, which has a commitment to be delivered in May 2020.

In addition, the Sonoran Governor met privately with representatives of the companies Iberdrola and Acciona, who will open two photovoltaic plants in the state (Hermosillo and Puerto Libertad) next May, to compliment Sonora's continuing efforts to expand clean energy and green growth.

Complutense University of Madrid has agreed to sign a memorandum through the Institute of Scholarships and Educational Loans, so that young Sonoran students who wish to study in that country will receive the benefit of resident student costs involved with the studies, and also to a collaboration agreement for the training of state teachers.

In the tour, the head Executive in Sonora met separately with the Minister of Public Works in Spain, José Luis Ábalos, the ambassador of Mexico in Spain, Roberta Lajous, the mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena Castrillo, as well as with a group of Basque businessmen, to discuss the competitive advantages and the productive and business vocation of Sonora to generate greater investment in favor of the state.

The governor was accompanied on this tour by the head of the Executive Office, Natalia Rivera Grijalva, the head of the State Water Commission, Sergio Avila Ceceña, and the general director of the Office of Liaison and International Cooperation, Yamilett Martínez Briseño.

MV Astoria is a former ocean liner now operated as a cruise ship by Cruise & Maritime Voyages. She was ordered in 1944, and launched September 9, 1946, as Stockholm by Götaverken in Gothenburg for the Swedish America Line (SAL). She made her Maiden voyage in 1948, under the command of captain John Nordlander. During her decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under the names Völkerfreundschaft, Volker, Fridtjof Nansen, Italia I, Italia Prima, Valtur Prima, Caribe, Athena, and Azores, before beginning service as Astoria in March 2016.

As Stockholm, she was best known for colliding with Andrea Doria in 1956, resulting in the sinking of the latter ship.

With the retirement of Doulos Phos in 2010, Astoria is the world's second oldest active oceangoing passenger ship after Sea Cloud.

At 525 feet (160.02 m) with a gross registered tonnage of 12,165 register tons, Stockholm was the smallest passenger ship operating on the North Atlantic route at that time. However, she was the largest passenger ship built in Sweden at the time. Originally designed to carry 395 people, a 1953 refit expanded Stockholm's capacity to 548 people.

On the night of July 25, 1956, at 11:10 pm, in heavy fog in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nantucket, Stockholm and Andrea Doria of the Italian Line collided in what was to become one of history's most notorious maritime disasters.

Although most passengers and crew survived the collision, the larger Andrea Doria luxury liner capsized and sank the following morning. Owing to the collision, 50% of Andrea Doria's lifeboats were unusable, however a number of ships responded and provided assistance, which averted a massive loss of life.

Five members of Stockholm's crew were killed instantly, and several more were trapped in the wrecked bow. Despite its having lost about 3 ft (0.9 m) of freeboard, the crippled Stockholm helped in the rescue and ended up carrying 327 passengers and 245 crew members from Andrea Doria, in addition to her own passengers and crew. After Andrea Doria sank, Stockholm sailed to New York City under her own power and arrived on July 27. There the crushed bow portion was repaired at a cost of US $1 million three months later.

On 3 January 1960, Stockholm was sold to the East German government, which renamed the ship Völkerfreundschaft ("friendship between nations") and operated her as an ocean liner until 1985. In 1985 she was transferred to a Panamanian company, Neptunas Rex Enterprises. Her name was reduced to Volker, and by the end of the year she was laid up in Southampton, England. She was later used as a barracks ship in Oslo for asylum seekers in Norway under the name Fridtjof Nansen.

The ex-Stockholm was sold to Italian interests in 1989 and towed to Genoa, Italy - Andrea Doria's home port Doria. It was discovered that the ex-Stockholm was in a very good condition. She was rebuilt from the waterline up and given a modern cruise ship design. Named Italia I, then Italia Prima, she later sailed as Valtur Prima primarily to Cuba, and was laid up there in 2001. Acquired by Festival Cruise Line in 2002 and renamed Caribe, she continued to sail to Cuba.

In 2005 the ex-Stockholm was renamed Athena, being registered in Portugal. She was flagged out of Cyprus operating for Classic International Cruises.

On December 3, 2008 Athena was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden. Reportedly, 29 pirate boats surrounded the ship at one stage until a US Navy P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft circled above which led some of the pirates to flee. The crew prevented the pirates from boarding by firing high-pressure water cannons at them. No one was injured and the ship escaped without damage, and continued on her voyage to Australia.

On 17 September 2012, reports announced that she and her fellow ship Princess Danae were detained in Marseille, France, for unpaid fuel bills, it was also announced that Arion was detained in Montenegro for similar issues.

Early in 2013 Athena was bought by the recently created Portuguese cruise company Portuscale Cruises and renamed Azores. As soon as her acquisition was confirmed, she was taken to a shipyard in Marseille, where she was revamped before entering Portuscale Cruises service after completing a charter to Berlin-based Ambiente Kreuzfahrten, from whom she was chartered to Classic International to join her fleetmate, Princess Daphne. The charter began in March 2014 with a cruise from Lisbon, Portugal to Bremerhaven, Germany, and concluded in November 2014 in Genoa, Italy.

In 2015 she entered service with Cruise & Maritime Voyages, operating her first voyage with the line from Avonmouth Docks to the Caribbean in January 2015. From May 2016 until March 2017, the ship was on charter to French tour operator Rivages Du Monde. In June 2016, it was announced that Astoria would be leaving the CMV fleet after her final cruise on 27 April 2017 from London Tilbury. In a U-turn decision, it was announced, in February 2017, that Astoria would remain in the CMV fleet for a further season until at least 2018.

After April 2018, CMV continued advertising further cruises in Autumn 2018, and Spring and Autumn 2019. Starting in December of 2019 she is scheduled to spend the winter cruising the Sea of Cortez from the port of Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) Mexico.

Return visits followed complete with tropical storms, swine flu scares, equipment delays, sudden passport border requirements and an American recession. The independence that drove the Peacemakers to life post-Refreshments kept the spirit alive providing fans the opportunity for an annual migration to RCPM's second home of Puerto Penasco to celebrate life through rock n roll.

The office will be located in Plaza del Sol on Freemont Blvd. and will have a grand opening ceremony this month. More details to come.
Puerto Peñasco Achieves Renewal of Sustainable Clean Beach Certification

Puerto Peñasco has achieved the renewal of the Sustainable Clean Level II certification by the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification (IMNC). Rocky Point's Sandy Beach is the only beach in Sonora, and one of the largest beaches in Mexico, to achieve this distinction which is granted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

Major Kiko Munro, thanked the commitment of the Local Committee of Clean Beaches, the individuals and businesses involved, as well as the general public. The Mayor explained that it was a great team effort which led to the recertification of the 1525 meters of sustainable clean beach on Sandy Beach.

"Peñasco has taken great steps forward in tourism, in development, and the economy," said the Municipal Mayor. "This opportunity to have a certified sustainable clean beach, gives us an excellent competitive advantage that allows us to continue to improve the image of this destination, and to place it at the international forefront by complying with the regulations and corresponding legislation, and by ensuring the protection of the environment and of our visitors. "

This good news will only add to the continued increase in tourism driving Puerto Penasco as the best destination of the Sea of Cortes and Northwestern Mexico, announcing just a few days, the start of operations of the shipping company Cruise & Maritime Voyages, settling the bases for tourist and economic growth.

Luis César García González, Director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone and member of the Local Committee of Clean Beaches, stated that it was in the month of November 2018, when the audit was carried out, being approved and surpassing the requirements and quality specifications. environmental, sanitary, security, and services for the sustainability of Sandy Beach, which is used primarily for recreational purposes.

Currently, Mexico has 38 beaches certified under the NMX-AA-120-SCFI-2006 in different levels, I, II and III; The beach destination of Puerto Penasco is also one of the nine Mexican beaches that have the Sustainable Clean Beach award for excellence in environmental, health, safety and service quality.

It will be at the next XIV National Meeting of Clean Beaches, to be held in the month of July, in the State of Tamaulipas, where the municipality of Puerto Peñasco will be distinguished with the formal recertification of Sustainable Clean Beach Level II; Certificates, flags and awards will be awarded by the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification (IMNC).
Mayor Kiko Munro Presents Plaza del Camarón, Remodeled after 28 Years of Continual Use

Plaza del Camarón, aka "Shrimp Park" has opened again after a renovation and remodel for the first time in the park's 28 year existence. The park was constructed during the municipal government term running from 1988-1991, designating this emblematic public space to families in order have more and better places for recreation and relaxation.

Accompanied by Isaac Pacheco Robles, Director of Public Services, José Luis Montijo Torres, Director of Public Works, and Alberto Aldrete Germán, Regidor President of the Parks and Gardens Commission, the Mayor assured that this park is only a small part of the ongoing transformation of the Puerto Peñasco, which he vowed will continue.

"This rehabilitation consists of a first stage, because the challenge is to manage additional resources to continue to improve and maintain this block, where our parents and grandparents have spent unforgettable moments," said the Mayor.

Moments later, the new plaque was unvailed and the fountain, which had not worked for years, was spectacularly lit. It was a heartfelt request from Puerto Penasco residents that it be restored so they could observe it once again in working order, with lights and dancing water fountains.

Mayor Kiko Munro indicated that 1.9 million pesos were invested in the rehabilitation of the Plaza, complete with the installation of traffic restriction posts, double street lamps with efficient LED lighting, rehabilitation of fountain, electrical upgrades, placement of benches, and lots of new paint and landscaping.

The renovations also included 1,110 square meters of new concrete flooring, 250 square meters of concrete sidewalks, placement of access ramps for people with disabilities, and renovation of decorative planters. All of this work was completed in the term of 3 months.

The Mayor continued by explaining that the rehabilitation of the Art Kiosk will be completed, and will be equipped with new seats, renovation of the bathrooms, walls, ceilings, and addition of equipment for the screening of films.

After the celebration, children, young people, and adults all enjoyed the sunset and admired the new lighting of the Plaza del Camarón, which will continue to be a meeting place for contemporary families and new generations for many years to come.

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Municipal Government Supports and Promotes Sporting Programs, Donating Bus

A bus with capacity for 46 passengers was delivered by Mayor Kiko Munro for the benefit of the Municipal Sports Institute (IMD), which will be used for team travel and to promote and support the different leagues and sports disciplines of Puerto Peñasco.

Under the slogan "We Play to Win, We are Peñasco", in the presence of presidents of different sporting leagues, young athletes, and parents, the Mayor reiterated his commitment to sport in all disciplines, and he boasted that Puerto Penasco is, and will continue to be, a hotbed of great champions.

"This bus is the answer to the urgent need to have quality transport for all Puerto Penasco athletes," said the municipal executive, stating that the benefits are already being enjoyed and appreciated.

Rocky Point Municipal Government Steps Up to Patch Potholes on Coastal Highway

Multiple reports of potholes, citizen requests, and lack of action by the State promped the Rocky Point administration to take action and patch the dangerous potholes between Puerto Penasco and El Golfo de Santa Clara. Most of the patching work took place at kilometer 94, where they road was deteriorated the most. The works were performed last month in an effort to provide greater safety to residents and visitors traveling to and from our city.

Cholla Bay Loses Power After Storm Topples Poles

Rocky Point has had some unusually cold and windy weather over the past few weeks, the worst of which caused a real problem in the community of Cholla Bay. Ten power poles were blown down by the storm, resulting in the entire area losing power and, basically, trapping residents in the area because of the poles laying across the road.

Miraculously, through the efforts of CFE, aided by additional resources and employees from San Luis, the power, which had been expected to have been out for up to 3 days, was resorted within 24 hours. That was a real testament to the professionalism and hard work by the company and its employees. Within just a couple days, life was completely back to normal in Cholla Bay.

Las Conchas Guard Shack Closed - For Now

After countless years of existence, the guard shack at the entrance of Las Conchas has been closed due to the legality of its location. Technically, the road through Las Conchas is a public road which is owned and maintained by the City of Puerto Penasco. As such, it can not be impeded by a private citizen, company, or HOA group, and the guard shack was forced to close.

Time will tell if something is worked out to restrict free flowing traffic into and throughout Las Conchas, but for now, it is open to the public. Of course, the security presence protecting residents and homes is still present and nothing has really changed, but they no longer stop cars from entering the area.

Hearts, Candy, Cake, and Piñata
by Deb Turner

The Puerto Peñasco Scouts Troop 002 had a great time celebrating Valentine's Day (Friendship Day). We had money to spend due to our efforts at the Fish Bowl Mermaid's Market. The girls sold candy and handed out flyers. Their efforts and salesmanship were so great we even had enough for pizza after the Tiburones Basketball Championship.

The previous week our scouts made Valentine decorations to place on the wall at the Community Center for their upcoming party. We practiced our cheers, played games, enjoyed a pinata and all the fun in a party. There were goody bags with more candy and cake and soda. We had a wonderful time!

For more information about our scouts, our events or if you want us to be a part of your activity contact Deb Turner (638) 836-8645

Rocky Point's Juan Francisco "El Gallo" Estrada Will Have His Revenge Against Rungvisai on April 6

The current World Boxing Council super champion (WBC), Sor Rungvisai from Thailand, will take on the rematch fight against Puerto Penasco's hometown hero, Juan Francisco "Gallo" Estrada, on April 6 in Los Angeles. The evening fights will be broadcast live on DAZN.

Rungvisai stats are: (47-4-1, 41 KOs), while Estrada stats are: (38-3, 26 KOs).

Rungvisai and Estrada met in February 2018, fighting a very close match ending with a victory for Rungvisai by majority decision of 114-114, 117-111 and 115-113.

After the defeat, Estrada called for a rematch but for various reasons it has not happened to date. After the long wait, finally the Rocky Point native will have the opportunity to avenge his defeat against the tough Thai.

According to a confirmed statement from RingTV, Rungvisai vs. Estrada II will head an evening that will feature the clash between IBF super bantamweight champion TJ Doheny and WBA regular champion Daniel Roman. "Juan Francisco Estrada has reached an agreement for a rematch between them that will take place on April 6 on DAZN in Los Angeles, California", according to RingTV. "On the same card, International Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion TJ Doheny (21-0, 15 KOs) is expected to face WBA 122-pound world champion Daniel Roman (26-2-1, 10). KOs) in a unification".

Rungvisai signed a promotional agreement with Matchroom Boxing on Wednesday, so his fight with former 28-year-old WBA / WBO flyweight champion Estrada would be the first with the company on DAZN. Rungvisai, 32, already beat Estrada last year for a 12-round majority decision last year at The Forum in Inglewood, California. According to one expert, "In the best of cases, Estrada deserved to win only round 12, since he was moving away almost the entire fight. The score was atrociously bad for the three judges".
Mexican Company Converts Avocado Pits into Completely Biodegradable Plastic

When you think of Mexico, you think of tequila and guacamole, says Scott Munguia. If he has his way, you might also be thinking of something else made from the avocado: plastic made from the seed.

As plastic straws and disposable cutlery fall out of favor for their potential to inflict environmental damage, a company with an alternative that uses avocado pits is getting more attention.

Morelia, Michoacán-based Biofase is manufacturing biodegradable cutlery and straws made out avocado seeds using a process whose beginnings date back to 2012.

Scott Mungía was a chemical engineering student at the time and, being motivated to solve pollution problems, was looking for a reliable source for biodegradable plastic.

After a trial-and-error process that tested the properties of raw materials such as mango and mamey sapote seeds, he happened to be reading a paper that included a picture of the corn molecule used to make bioplastic.

"I already knew what the avocado seed molecule looked like." says Munguia.

The idea was born. He went through two years of development, and now, with a team of 14 employees is poised to open a plant with a capacity of 700 tons a month in November. Mexico produces 300,000 pounds of avocados, or about 50% of the world's supply. The global market for bioplastic is $5.8 billion, according to Bioplastics News.

Avocado seeds pile up in Mexico like nowhere else in the world, and most end up being burned at landfill sites.

It took him a year and a half of research to find an effective method to extract a molecular compound from the avocado pit and obtain a biopolymer, which could then be molded into any desirable shape. Munguía's avocado-based bioplastic was born.

The bioplastic products manufactured using his process biodegrade after 240 days of being exposed to the elements or buried in the ground, while their fossil fuel-based counterparts can take more than 100 years.

By 2013, Munguía had the process patented and founded Biofase. Two years later he installed his first plant in Morelia to manufacture 100% biodegradable ecofriendly plastic resins and sell them as raw material.

In 2016, Mungía decided to start manufacturing his own bioplastic-based products in a second plant. He began with plastic cutlery, and in February this year moved into straws.

Four months on, the young entrepreneur has found that changing people's habits is no easy feat: "people are still reluctant to pay more for a product that protects the environment."

But production continues in the Morelia plant, whose monthly yield of biodegradable plastic products is 130 tons, 40% of which are straws. Eighty per cent of the plant's production is exported to the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Colombia and Peru.

Its daily consumption amounts to 15 tons of avocado seeds, which it gets from the United States-based food company Simplot, which also operates a plant in Michoacán.

Mexico is the second biggest market for Munguía's company, but its principal customers are chain restaurants such as Fiesta Americana, P. F. Chang's China Bistro and Chili's Grill & Bar rather than consumers.

Several Rocky Point restaurants have begun using the new, eco-friendly straws and they can be purchased locally at CS Market, located off of Kino Blvd, across from Numero's.
Why is the Mexican Currency Called a Peso?
In pre-Hispanic times, cocoa, copper dust, jade or cotton blankets served as currency , but with the Spanish conquest, payment began to be made through coins.

When the Spaniards arrived in Mexico they used the coins they had brought from Europe during the first years.
This was known as Real de a ocho or Peso Duro, and contained 27 and a half grams of silver. It was also ordered to melt and mark all the gold that had been found in Tenochtitlán.

Over time the first Mexican currency was generated using the precious metals that abounded throughout the country.
The first national currency was tepuzque gold, a copper coin with very little gold that was rejected by the natives. Since these small discs were not used, the use of cocoa and silver alone continued.

How was the Mexico Peso Born?

Before coining the first colonial coins in Mexico, silver coins were used and the only way to define their value was by weighing them, so a piece of very heavy silver was called a peso, hence the name of the Mexican currency.

The Peso of silver gradually became the traditional currency of the country.

It was not until 1535 that the colonial Mexicans began to resent the lack of a common currency that was easily accessible, but that had a purchase value equal to that of the money coined in Spain, so it was decided to found the Royal Mint of Mexico, the first mint where the coins were made in America.

There is a book published in 1852 by Juan Nepomuceno Almonte, son of the hero of the Fatherland José María Morelos y Pavón, called "Guide of Outsiders and repertoire of useful knowledge", in which he details the origin of the name "Peso" of the national currency.
"The Mint of Mexico is one of the establishments that at all times (sic) have attracted the attention of the foreigners (sic) and that has been famous all over the world, for the prodigious quantity of precious metals that in it have been coined Up to fourteen years after the conquest, that is, until 1535, no coin was known in Mexico, other than the one worked in Spain; but (sic) as the one that came was not enough for the trade in its different changes, they used silver without tilling, making small pieces of an agreed weight, and from here comes the name of pesos that was not previously known in the currency " .
Due to the high value of Mexican silver, it soon began to be used in international transactions , even being the metal with which the first dollars were coined after the independence of the United States at the end of the 18th century.
The value of the first dollars to circulate in the colonies liberated from British control was backed by silver mined in Mexico.

In this regard, the sociologist Salvatore Bobanes, refers to a passage from the book by Juan José Morales and Peter Gordon "The Silver Way: China, Spanish America and the Birth of Globalization" ("The road of silver: China, Spanish America and the birth of globalization "), says:
There was a globalization before globalization and America played a key role in it, that is, Spanish America. Much more before the dollar was painted an emerald green in Washington, it was polished in Mexican silver. "
In the 18th and 19th century the Mexican peso was widely used in the United States. On July 6, 1785, the value of the United States dollar was set by decree to approximately match the Spanish dollar. Both were based on the silver content of the coins.

The first  U.S. dollar coins were not issued until April 2, 1792, and the peso continued to be officially recognized and used in the United States, along with other foreign coins, until February 21, 1857. In  Canada, it remained legal tender, along with other foreign silver coins, until 1854 and continued to circulate beyond that date. The Mexican peso also served as the model for the  Straits dollar (now the  Singapore/Brunei Dollar), the  Hong Kong dollar, the  Japanese yen, and the  Chinese yuan. The term  Chinese yuan refers to the round Spanish dollars, Mexican pesos and 8 other silver coins which saw use in China during the 19th and 20th century. The Mexican peso was also briefly legal tender in 19th century Siam, when government mints were unable to accommodate a sudden influx of foreign traders.

The Mexican peso (sign: $; code: MXN) is the currency of Mexico. Modern peso and dollar currencies have a common origin in the 15th-19th century-Spanish dollar, most continuing to use its sign, "$". The Mexican peso is the 10th most traded currency in the world, the third most traded currency from America (after the United States dollar and Canadian dollar), and the most traded currency from  Latin America.
Mexico is Number 2 in the World for the Most Household Pets

70% of households have at least one pet

Mexico is up to its ears in cats and dogs.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), 70% of Mexican households have at least one pet, putting it second only to Argentina for the country with the most household pets.

Another study, GFK Pet Ownership 2016, also arrived at the conclusion that Mexico figures prominently among nations with the most pet lovers.

According to Animal Health Bayer-Mexico marketing director Bruno Rodríguez Muñoz, most Mexicans prefer dogs, though cat ownership is on the rise. The furry division is split 80% dogs to 20% cats in terms of ownership of one of the two most popular household pets.

Rosalía Arriaga, general manager of Dr. Guerrero Veterinary Clinic, said the past few years have seen a significant increase in owners' preoccupation for their pets' health.

Towards that end, Bayer-Mexico, with the support of Ocetif, a food certification organization, decided it will issue a certification for veterinarians called TUVET. In a press conference at a veterinary symposium in Mexico City, the organization announced the new certification, the first in Latin America for veterinary clinics and hospitals for smaller animals.

Rodríguez said Bayer-Mexico's principal objective in issuing the certification is to ensure quality service in veterinary establishments. He said that they expected to issue the first 100 certificates to the first batch of animal hospitals and clinics between May and June.

Ocetif vice-president Mario Gorena Mireles said that in order to receive a certification veterinary practices must demonstrate consistency in veterinary training, engage in preventative medicine, ensure quality care and show warm and attentive customer service.
Coricos Sonorenses - Sonoran Corn Cookies

Mexican pastry recipes are typically written in comically large quantities. A kilo of flour for everything. Half a kilo of lard. 100 empanadas or 500 cookies later, you're done. The size of these recipes speak volumes of the Mexican love for baked goods. Thankfully, through the magic of the metric system, these recipes are easy to scale down to a more manageable size.

Coricos are not one of Mexico's best known pastries, due perhaps to their regional nature and their simplicity. They are mostly eaten in the northern states of Sonora and Sinaloa, and consist mostly of instant corn flour, sugar and lard. They're only slightly sweet, and their corn flavor is softened by milk. They could be described as a baked atole. These simple cookies pair perfectly with a cup of coffee.

Recipe:
  • Difficulty: easy
  • 125 g (2/3 c) lard, room temperature
  • 110 g (1/2 c) granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • Zest and juice of 1 or two limes
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 250 g (2 cups) instant corn masa flour (maseca)
  • 1/3 to 1/2 c whole milk, slightly warm
  • 1 egg, beaten, for egg wash
With a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the lard until soft. Add the sugar and mix until well incorporated. Follow with the egg, lime juice and zest. With the mixer running, slowly add the dry ingredients. Once the flour has been fully incorporated, add 1/3 of a cup of warm milk.

Mix until the dough comes together and begins to separate from the bowl. The consistency should be soft, and just slightly tacky, but not enough to stick to a clean surface. If necessary, mix in more milk, one tablespoon at a time.

Rest the dough for 30 minutes, well wrapped, to allow the flour time to hydrate properly. Divide the dough into smooth portions about 2 inches in size. Working on a clean surface, roll into a smooth tube of approximate 1/2" in diameter. Curl into a donut shape, overlapping by about 1/2" and flattening to seal. It is helpful to use a round cookie cutter as a guide.

Brush with egg wash, if desired, and bake at 350ºF for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden and firm but yielding to the touch.
The Mother of All Expressions

Mothers are widely revered in Mexico, and although Mother's Day on May 10 isn't a national holiday, not a great deal gets done that day. It isn't moved to the nearest Sunday like Father's Day, or Mother's Day in other countries: when it falls on a week day, so be it. Working mothers are given the day off, some people leave early for family gatherings, and any employer who refuses to allow this without good reason may be said to "not have a mother."

Which brings this story to its point: the widespread use of the word madre in expressions whose English equivalents have nothing to do with matriarchal figures.

When it's said of a person, "no tiene madre," it means they are shameless or unscrupulous. It can also be applied to things that are disgraceful or simply unfair. A variation is "¡qué poca madre!" which amounts to the same thing.

These two expressions, however, can also mean something quite different, in fact something quite positive:

"Este juego de video no tiene madre" means the video game is very good-extraordinary, in fact; a football team that played "de poca madre" played extremely well; and a great party can also be said to have been "de poca madre."

A car that whizzes past at breakneck speed "va hecho la madre," although "va hecho la raya" means the same thing and is more fitting in polite company.

Hasta la madre is a versatile expression that suggests testing limits in a variety of ways. Its basic meaning is fed-up, or sick-and-tired. "Estoy hasta la madre del tráfico," or the more personal and unpleasant "me tienes hasta la madre."

Someone who is very drunk can be described as being "hasta la madre" with alcohol, and a bus that is so crammed-full with passengers that they are hanging out of the doors is also packed "hasta la madre."

"Hasta el gorro" - literally "up to the cap" - is a valid alternative.

In Spanish "mentar la madre" means to insult - literally "mention or refer to the mother," even if the recipient's mother or mother-child relationship isn't alluded to.

Threats to visit bodily harm on a person can be expressed as "te voy a romper la madre" or "dar en la madre" which make as little sense, literally considered, as some of their English equivalents. And if you run headlong into a brick wall or fall off a bike, a bystander may observe that someone "se dio en la madre."

A standalone expression of surprise or shock, "¡en la madre!" can be elicited from someone observing an accident or disastrous event.

But the real Mexican classic is "me vale madre" - "I don't give a damn" - used widely across classes and immortalized by the illustration of late cartoonist Rogelio Naranjo. This mother of all expressions even has its own noun form: someone in Mexico who habitually couldn't care less is known as a "valemadrista."
