BEACHFRONT

Welcome to June. Summer is upon us and the weather is great. The water has warmed up so people are enjoying the ocean and the water-sports. Memorial Day weekend was busy here again with an estimated 35,000 people showing up to have some fun in the sun. And, other than a bit of a wait at the border and a couple unfortunate traffic accidents, everyone seemed to have a great time.

With the increase in tourism, especially on the holidays and weekends, most of us are painfully aware of the possible wait at the border - in both directions these days. Having a wait coming into Mexico is something that most of us are not accustomed to seeing, but there have certainly been times recently with a backup of cars on the US side waiting to cross. The wait after a weekend, especially a holiday weekend, going back into the USA has become a given and most people either try to avoid it by leaving super early or staying an extra day. Those that don't have that option, have just learned that it is a small price to pay for being so close to such a wonderful place to visit. Just remember that both sides of the border are doing what they do to keep everyone safe and help to prevent illegal items or substances from crossing. It's their job and the vast majority of the time, they are friendly and very accommodating. After the Memorial Holiday weekend, the US side had all 5 lanes open as well as one of the inbound lanes being used as an outbound lane for part of the day. I am told that at the peak travel times, the wait to get across was up to 3 hours long. For me, that's enough incentive to get up early to go, or more likely, to stay another day. Luckily, living here full-time usually allows me the luxury of heading back at more convenient times.

This year is an election year in Mexico. The City of Puerto Penasco has a Mayoral race and the Nation has a Presidential race. Both will be determined by a vote to be held on July 1st.  The Sonora Governor's spot is not up for reelection this year. The Mayor is elected every 3 years and the Governor and President, every 6 years. Elections in Mexico are always held on Sundays. What a good idea that is, and I can't imagine that it doesn't have a positive effect on voter turnout. Most people have Sundays off so they don't have to leave work to vote. Maybe the USA should give that a try to see if it helps increase voter turnout.

Another thing that happens in Mexico during an election is the banning of alcohol sales during that day. That idea is not nearly as popular as the Sunday voting one, but people do tend to take it in stride and, as long as you remember to buy what you're going to drink ahead of time, you probably won't even notice the difference.  So, remember, alcohol sales are banned from Midnight on Saturday, June 30th until Noon on Monday, July 2nd, so plan ahead if you're going to be here with the plan to consume any alcoholic beverages. This ban also includes bars and restaurants and they are not allowed to serve during those same hours.

Finally, PLEASE don't forget to mark your calendars for our 7th annual Las Vegas Night event which will be held at the 2nd floor ballroom at the Sonoran Sky Resort on Saturday, July 7th. Tickets are available at the Sonoran Sky sales office, just off the lobby. You can also buy them at the door on the night of the event. If you have never attended one of our Las Vegas Night's, please try to come. Almost everyone who attends becomes a regular at the event and comes for subsequent years. Hope to see you there!

Viva Las Vegas Night for Charity - Saturday, July 7th

Interest and excitement for this, the seventh annual Las Vegas Night for Charity has been simply effervescent! Just as a reminder, the fun starts at 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 7th inside the cool air conditioned environment of our beautiful Los Volcanes Ballroom on the second floor in the Luxurious Sonoran Sky beachfront resort on Sandy Beach.

We will have a shuttle service so we encourage you to park along the road to the resort and our volunteers will be escorting guests right to the elevators.  We have many charity-minded volunteers from our sales staff and corporate office to handle ticket sales right at the door. Your $50 US Dollar entry is worth $300 dollars in "Charity Chips" and one raffle ticket for the dozens and dozens of drawings held throughout the night. You can, and should purchase additional tickets for cash or chips anytime during the night.  We say "should" because we will undoubtedly again have nearly one hundred valuable prizes. As of today and still coming in.

Oh, your ticket is good for dinner provided this year by Cielito Lindo Fine Mexican Cuisine, located right at the Sonoran Sky Resort. We're still working on the menu for the event, but be assured that it will be wonderful and it will be sure to make you eager to visit the restaurant again after the event.

Examples of just a few of the prizes you can win or bid on include 18 holes of golf,  2 night stays in resort hotels and condominiums, spa treatments, dinners, quad and jet ski rentals, sunset cruises, drinks, bottles of Tequila,  photography sessions, artwork and more. Plus, we will be revealing some incredible surprise prizes for the auction at the end of the night where you'll use your accumulated chips to bid.

Once again this year we are lucky and grateful to have Randy Van Hulle, owner of Ace Casino Equipment of Tucson lending his expertise to our event. Through his company founded in 1987, Randy has over 3,000 corporate casino functions to his credit. Randy and his wife Linda drive in from Tucson every year to give of their time and expertise for this charity event. Linda and a few of his employees also volunteer as dealers.

Be sure to tell all the volunteers how much you appreciate what they do for the community when you cross paths with them Saturday night. And, please thank and frequent the businesses who donate prizes. This even would not be the same without all of the terrific prizes. Thank you for that gesture!

One of the main ingredients that make this night so much fun is the jovial camaraderie among everyone, invigorated by the smiling attitudes of all the volunteers who give their time and energy to serve as dealers, ticket distributors, chip counters and everything else to make your evening fun.

Where else can you have so much fun for such a small cost and help so many deserving charities? Hope to see you there!

Tony Acuña - A Mexican Chef of Contemporary Traditional Cuisine

Born in Mazatlan Sinaloa and starting as a dishwasher in different restaurants, Jose Antonio Acuña moved to Los Cabos where he really began his career in the kitchen.

The Chef of the restaurant "CielitoLindo" at the Sonoran Sky Resort was fortunate to be taught by renowned chefs, and some of the restaurants where he learned different cooking techniques, have already been awarded 5 diamonds rating nationwide.

His work experience started in restaurants such as the Sheraton, one of the largest chains in the world, "I also worked in independent Japanese restaurants with Japanese chefs, in different Mexican haute cuisine restaurants, and in Cabo with renowned chefs".

"I worked with Villa Group a Mexican hotel chain with several hotels in Cabo, Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, etc... During my university internship I did not receive any pay, which was the only way to get into the big restaurants".

"While I was working as a sous-chef at the Sheraton my maestro called me one day and offered me a position at a Mexican restaurant and Steak House of 5 diamonds; I remained there for 2 years, that is where my career began because at 22 year old, I was already in charge of an Asian fusion restaurant with Mexican techniques or Mexican ingredients with Asian techniques and in charge of the Mexican cuisine as well, all under the supervision of my maestro".

"After 7 years in Cabo, I went back to Mazatlan and joined The Water Edge restaurant, also known as a farm to table restaurant where every week we went to the garden to pick the vegetables, like pumpkins, tomatoes, etc..., we were to use at the restaurant. Proteins like shrimp and fish were bought at a place two blocks from the pier ".

"Speaking of what my specialty would be, I can say that it is a Mexican cuisine with traditional or contemporary techniques, for example for our mole here in CielitoLindo we use a traditional Oaxacan technique that it is all tetemed, everything is roasted, and the dish has also a concoction of Sous Vide where the protein, that is a beef steak, is marinated in oil with herbs, epazote and high vacuum cooked in a computerized precision cooker.

The temperature and the exact time are programmed by the weight of the protein so the fillet will always be at the right temperature, and it will never be raw but always moist and juicy."

"Another highly recommend dish is the smoked scallops, the scallops are purchased in Penasco, then smoked with cloves, coriander seeds, dehydrated cilantro, sealed in coriander butter, mounted on a bed of mashed cauliflower and topped with a coriander and epazote oil".

"Already three years here in Peñasco, with the opportunity to start the restaurant CielitoLindo, where I have all the freedom to make suggestions for the menu, as well as to help in making decisions for the marketing and adding the pleasure to enjoy the opportunity of talking to customers, I can say that we started on the right foot and we are happy to see repeated customers back for lunch or dinner from the surrounding developments.

All my cooks begin working a week before starting to cook and CielitoLindo is an example where they arrived and trained two weeks earlier. I think it is important to mention that everyone is under 21 years old.

We invite everyone, and please come and try something different, all the dishes have ingredients of the highest quality and as important, the prices are reasonable.

Circus Mexicus Gets a Jump on Giving Back

By José Antonio Pérez and Shandra Keesecker-Rivero     RockyPoint360.com

With just about two weeks to go before the annual good spirits rock-n-roll trek to Puerto Peñasco for Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers' Circus Mexicus, the local Tourist Auxiliary Unit (TAU) is getting a leg up on event goers - or make that a boot (or rather several pairs of boots).

While Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers have made a point of giving back to the community in various ways for nearly two decades, this is the third time specific equipment has been donated to the frequently dubbed "Tourist Police", an auxiliary part of Puerto Peñasco's Public Safety Department.  This year, event promoter Greg Ross detailed the donation to the TAU consisted of tactical boots and pants at an overall value of nearly $2000 US.

TAU Director Carlos Bravo, accompanied by TAU Advisory Board member Jim Ringquist, emphasized the charitable arm of Circus Mexicus, expressing his appreciation for the gear which in turn helps strengthen the TAU's work.  He noted last year's donation also included gloves, helmets, and flashlights, among other safety gear. This has gone a long way to better equipping this valuable squad.

Concert promoter Greg Ross detailed this year's Circus Mexicus, to be held June 7th - 10th, anticipates over 3000 visitors coming in from over 30 US states and abroad. He thanked the TAU for helping to provide "a safe fun environment for everybody to enjoy in Puerto Peñasco." Since the TAU's implementation over three years ago, they have had a welcome presence at the numerous venues over the four-day concert weekend - look for them dressed in khaki pants, white shirts, and of course new boots!
Large Hotel Chains Resume Interest in Investing in Puerto Peñasco

Chains such as Marriott and Holiday Inn plan to start projects

"From one moment to the next, construction of new hotels in Puerto Peñasco could begin, as the interest of large hotel chains such as Marriott and Holiday Inn has returned to this growing destination once again. With near certainty of the investment for these companies", comments, Oscar Palacio Soto, local representative of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels of the state of Sonora.

"There is this interest of large hotel chains to come to settle in Peñasco, and it will happen at any time in the very near future, so it could be said that in a couple of years this destination will have renowned hotels fully operating".

It must be made clear in principle that before the economic crisis that occurred in the neighboring country a few years ago, in Peñasco, the construction projects for a Marriott hotel and a Holiday Inn were already underway, but unfortunately During the crisis, the projects were stopped. But today, the interest in resuming construction work has resumed.

Investors have been measuring the hotel occupancy rates as they have rebound, and now have reached optimum levels to move forward and invest. Today's occupancy rates are at the highest points since before the recession and are at capacity on many occasions. Adding to the equation is the new convenience of air connectivity and the future arrival of medium-sized cruises through the expected finalization of construction of phase I of the Home Port in 2020.

"Investors have also paid close attention to the good relationship that exists today between the governments of Sonora and Arizona and the implementation of the "safe corridor" between the border and Puerto Penasco, which has opened up even more possibilities for the growth of the number of hotel rooms which will be needed in this town" , exhibited Palacio Soto.

This arrival of well known hotel chains will significantly increase the number of hotel rooms available for tourism within the next couple years from the current 1,500 to a possible increase of 1900 or more.

"For the hoteliers that are currently working in Puerto Peñasco, it is very important that, faced with the arrival of large hotel chains, they prepare themselves better, train their workers and improve the conditions in their infrastructure, since they must be prepared in the face of high levels of competition", commented the president of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels of the state of Sonora.
Tourist Assistance Unit Continues to Impress with Wide Range of Activities to Help Tourists

On February 26, 2016, the Mayor officially announced activation of the Puerto Penasco Tourist Assistance Unit (in Spanish: Unidad Auxiliar Turistico) consisting of men and women, all bilingual and well trained and whose primary objectives are to serve, guide, inform and protect visitors, both national and foreign as well as the residents of Puerto Peñasco.

This exciting addition to our city by the sea has been a very important step toward preparing the city for its destined future as a world class resort destination. The carefully selected Tourist Assistance Unit is made up of naturally congenial service-oriented personnel who genuinely care about the welfare of all the people who live in and visit Puerto Peñasco. The Unit is headed up by Carlos Bravo. The rest of the State of Sonora has also taken note, as the Mayor commented, " Our TAU is the first of its kind in the State of Sonora, with a specific purpose to assist the visitors coming to Rocky Point (Both national and foreigners)".

You will easily recognize agents of the Tourist Assistance Unit dressed in khaki pants, white shirts and safari hats riding bicycles, ATVs, and UTVs around the tourist areas and making themselves available to serve the public with their knowledge and training to answer questions of all sorts, give directions and help with any problems that might arise during your visit to Puerto Peñasco. On the back of their shirts in clear lettering is "Auxiliar Turistico".

Mayor Kiko Munro also appointed a six member Tourist Assistance Advisory Committee comprised of President, Jim Ringquist, Secretary, Enrique Gaxiola, Treasurer, Donna Whitman, and additional members Mark Olszewski, Luis Molina, and Steve Schwab. This committee serves as an intermediary between the public and the Local Government, providing oversight and support for the TAU, through Director Carlos Bravo and Mayor Kiko Munro, as well as being involved in a broad range of other tourist support and tourism promotion duties.

In the relatively short period of it's existence, the TAU has made a real difference and scored some major victories in helping tourists when they needed it. Unit Director Bravo reports that the TAU Agents have been the first responders on a great number of accident scenes (mostly ATV and UTV) and they have definitely saved lives by being nearby when needed.

The success stories of TAU Agents go beyond life saving first aid as well. Daily, and especially during the busy holiday celebrations, the TAU Agents reunite families with their lost children, give directions and information countless times, and even help tourists with dead batteries or who are stuck in the sand. That's true full-service, service.

All of the Agents are trained in a number of tourist related skills and ongoing training is mandatory. We are always looking for specialists in their field who are willing to volunteer to come and give them additional training. Please contact the TAU Advisory Committee to volunteer. Some of the current and ongoing training that the Agents receive is
in first aid, CPR, self defense, police procedures, environment protection, natural history of the area, folk tales of the town, ongoing English classes, and tourist assistance. This list is by no means all inclusive and if you are willing to teach a different relevant skill or subject, please let us know.

TAU administration is located on the Malecon near the entrance to The Point Restaurant. You are welcome to stop by any time during their hours of operation. Office hours are from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM and their local land line phone number is (638) 382-8413. You may also reach the TAU advisory committee at 602-774-1777 or email: [email protected]. You can also visit the committee's Facebook site at Puerto Peñasco Tourist Assistance Unit Advisory Committee.  For your information, the city also has a web site: www.puertopenasco.gob.mx.

The bottom line is that Puerto Peñasco is well on the road to preparing for the already growing tourism and the much-anticipated touristic growth expected for the next several years. Mayor Kiko Munro is keenly aware of how these new services can affect tourism growth. The Tourist Assistance Unit is and will remain a very important part of the future of Puerto Penasco.
Dwellings Completes 1st Home in Puerto Peñasco

During the week of May 5th, a volunteer team from Alive Church in Tucson, Arizona, completed the first ever Dwellings home in Puerto Peñasco. Dwellings, an organization dedicated to building homes and changing lives, constructs homes with the help of volunteer teams throughout Mexico, Honduras and Cuba. In 2017 they began a partnership with area residents and US based faith organizations to form B.B.F., (building bright futures) here in Puerto Peñasco.

With the help of local residents and members of D.I.F., Dwellings identified a family in need. Karla Hernandez and her three children, Yeimi (12), Jose (9), and Carlos (4) were living in a small, broken down trailer east of town. Karla works in a thrift store to provide for the needs of her children.  The kids are very good students and are usually in school but she sometime does not have the resources for them to go to school. The pastor of Karla's church recommended her and her family as candidates for a new home through Dwellings. Alive Church was quick to respond and formed a team that raised the needed funds for construction. They spent 1 week, working hard each day to complete the home.

Karla's new home is a beautiful 2 bedroom/1 bathroom complete with kitchen, indoor and outdoor living spaces, full plumbing and electric. This home, in addition to looking spectacular, will provide a long term living solution for her and her family. According to B.B.F., long term solutions include ensuring that the necessary support is in place for the family within 3-5 years to thrive independently. The project focuses on building homes and a bright future.

Dwellings uses a unique block system that allows volunteers to assemble a house in just 1 week. The more than 4000 blocks used to construct the home were fabricated by a team of workers at the Esperanza Recovery Center here in Puerto Peñasco. Through this partnership, Dwellings has been able to provide work opportunities for men seeking to improve their lives while attending a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.

This is just the beginning. B.B.F. and Dwellings hope to build many more homes in the coming years. Currently, with the help of local leaders and the offices of D.I.F., they have established a list of more than 10 potential build candidates. This list will of course grow with time. Dwellings is seeking volunteer teams that will commit to raising the $15,000 that is needed to build a house, as well as volunteer teams that will come to Puerto Peñasco and participate in the build process.

If you'd like to find out more about Dwellings, you can find their website at www.dwellingsnow.com.
2018 CIRCUS MEXICUS: MORE THAN A GREAT MUSIC FESTIVAL!

Each and every year, as we mingle through the thousands of dedicated RCPM fans-most of whom regard Circus Mexicus as the   zenith of their passion for rock and roll and a form of payback for their unshakable loyalty to Roger's creative contributions to the genre over the last two decades-exclamations of delight resound with expressions of awe, amazement, appreciation, wonderment, surprised discovery and flow consistently, no matter which venue or which artist may be performing.

One of the most common of these utterances comes in the form of a general but valid question, "How are they going to top this next year?" Indeed, a valid question in light of not only the noticeable increase in attendance year over year, but in the number of talented acts and venues selected by Roger and his team of skilled organizers whose intuitions have launched and/or embellished the careers of many other touring and recording bands through their appearances at Circus Mexicus.

As this highly anticipated musical phenomenon grows each year in-depth and breadth of fans, musicians and venues, so grows the legacy of Circus  Mexicus as an exciting international music festival that annually draws fans by the thousands from over 40 states and up to 7 countries.

It is easy to understand that a music festival full of well-selected talent would probably become a popular event in any accessible location. But, when amazing talent combined with detailed organization is assembled and takes place in a dreamy slice of paradise like the golden sandy beaches of the friendly sea-side fishing village of Puerto Peñasco in Sonora, Mexico on the Sea of Cortez, well, success becomes exponentially easier to visualize.

The other side of Circus Mexicus: A Shining Light of Hope

What makes Circus Mexicus so important to the local community is that Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (RCPM) as well as their fiercely loyal fans, also known as Peacemakers, are characterized by their generosity, compassion and love of Mexico, its culture and the friendly Mexican spirit so well represented by the local citizens of Puerto Peñasco (aka Rocky Point). This generosity by everyo ne involved in every aspect of Circus Mexicus from fans to bands has created the atmosphere of caring, sharing and charitable contributions which have made a tremendous impact on the local economy, organizations and individuals through the many charity fund- raising activities that have been organized since the beginning of Circus Mexicus.

While this little fishing village has benefitted from the compassion of many Americans who fall in love with the scenic beauty, colorful ambience and deserving people, Roger's friends and fans have made helping in every way possible their principle core value. They are not just willing to help in the community, but enthusiastically look for segments of the society where they can make a difference. As intimated earlier, as Circus Mexicus grows, so grows the opportunity to share their success for the betterment of the community. And they do it well!

The number of organizations, groups and individuals they've helped through the years is impossible to list entirely, but among those in the last few years who have received donations either in-kind or in cash, include drummer PH Naffah's favorite local charity, Casa de Esperanza para Los Niños (House of Hope for Children), a prominent and important shelter for disadvantaged kids. Every year, fans bring items listed on the shelter's wish list, which is put together by local expat residents in meetings with the shelter directors. This is a charity that fans, including you, help with by placing the wished-for items on a trailer parked near Will Call at JJ's on Thursday night and Bandito's Friday night. Please visit  www.circusmexicus.net/philanthropy to review the shelter's Wish List and see what you might have that you can bring down.

The group has used the funds from their Shake, Raffle and Roll for donations to Casa Hogar, La Montaña School for special needs children, Adopt-a-Classroom, founded by Mark and Barb Olszewski who also help with getting the wish list together for Casa Esperanza and work with several other charities.  You can check our Potpourri Page for information on Barb's annual Great Rubber Ducky Race that will happen on Sunday June 10th. Tickets for both these events are very popular because of the valuable prizes you can win. For just one example, how would you like to introduce RCPM from  the Mexican Moonshine Main Stage Saturday night?

Roger's Rock and Beach Soccer Tournament on Saturday on the beach at Wrecked at the Reef is another great fundraiser that raises cash as well as badly needed sports equipment for the Youth Sports Foundation. Rock and Beach Soccer has been a huge success sinc e its inception a few years ago. Soccer team members and fans bring all kinds of sporting goods, whether found in a dark corner of their garage, or purchased at sales during the year, the equipment always finds an enthusiastic future sports star! What's in your garage?

Funds from Circus Mexicus charity events were also used to provide uniforms and equipment for the Tourist Assistance Unit, formed by Mayor Kiko Munro, made up of trained individuals who serve in tourist areas around town and have proven the need for such a unit by contributing to the safety of visitors as first responders to accidents, applying first aid on the beach to victims of jelly fish stings, reuniting lost children with their parents, providing directions to disoriented visitors and even jump starting Rhinos stuck in the desert. They have also served as security at the last several Circus Mexicus events. Donations by Roger's group have included uniforms, boots, hats, helmets, gloves, first aid kits, safety goggles, back packs, shirts and pants among other necessities.

The philanthropic activities of RCPM, Circus Mexicus, the entire organization staff and many hundreds of fans have provided help throughout the community and endeared them to the people behind these great musical events. Even more wonderful is Roger's standing commitment to these efforts and the fact that no one is doing this because they feel they have to. They do this because of the kind and generous human beings they are.

As Peacemaker fans, if you aren't already, you can participate by clicking on Philanthropy at  www.circusmexicus.net.

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Manny's Beach Club is Back in Business

Oh, the memories... Those who have been visiting Rocky Point for many years surely have fond memories of Manny's Beach Club in the Mirador part of town. This beachfront bar/restaurant is a landmark - and, it's back! None other than Manny Sanchez Sr. himself sits in the helm once again, along with new partners, Jorge and Jerry Gaona, who also operate both the Tekila Bar and Shark Bite Bar in the Malecon area. Grand opening on May 25th was a huge success with a line of people well over one hundred long waiting for a chance to participate in the historic event. Congratulations to Manny and the Gaona brothers. I predict that Manny's will have another great run and it will help revive the sleepy Mirador area.

Tourism Stats, Just for Fun

Here's some random information for Puerto Peñasco so far in 2018:

- More than 35,000 tourists visited for the weekend of "Memorial Day", May 25-28.

-From January to March 2018, 95,217 private vehicles crossed the Lukeville checkpoint, an increase of 11% compared to 2017, in the same period. That is the highest number of vehicles since the counting of the entry of vehicles at that border crossing began in 2010. The number in 2010 was 43,260 private vehicles.

- Hotel chains Marriot and Holiday Inn have returned to project the construction of their hotels in Puerto Peñasco in the very near future and it is expected that by 2020 they will be in operation.

- Cleaning programs for our beaches in Puerto Peñasco are now permanent, the main objective being to keep the 1,500 meters of beach certified as "Clean Beach" by the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification (IMNC). We have the longest beach in a single stretch in the country that is certified, and first in Sonora.

Modernization of Public Lighting Network Concludes

On this occasion, the installation of 1027 new LED high efficiency street lamps included Lopez Portillo Blvd & Rio Asuncion street; Calle 54, between Las Conchas Blvd & Rio Papaloapan; Avenida 56, between Las Conchas Blvd & Rio Presidio. This final part of the Peñasco Iluminado Program represents a final investment of 856 thousand 501 pesos.

Municipal Administration Unveils La Bajada Remodel Project to Local Fishermen

Mayor Kiko Munro presented fishermen and members from the COPETUS Cooperative a project to rehabilitate the boat dock landing area known as La Bajada, representing an investment of approximately 12 million pesos over the next three months.   The mayor detailed the project, funds for which would be obtained from the Federal Maritime Land Zone, will include construction along the 120 m of coastal front as well as 2 hydraulic concrete ramps.

Plans for the boat launch area include renovation of the existing dock, a new dock, a pavement, a Fishing Affairs Office, and parking, along with entry and surveillance posts. The space is also to include an exhibit on the history of fishing in the area, a monument in honor of "Fallen Fishermen", among other important elements.

MVD Urges Arizonans to Consider Getting Voluntary Travel I.D.

As 2020 Deadline Approaches, Airports and TSA Help Spread the Word

Arizonans who plan to use their driver license or ID card to get through security checkpoints at U.S. airports and other restricted, federally-controlled facilities should take action to get an Arizona Voluntary Travel ID through the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division.

The Transportation Security Administration will provide MVD informational flyers at its airport checkpoints in Flagstaff, Phoenix Mesa-Gateway, Phoenix Sky Harbor, Tucson International and Yuma International. The flyers advise passengers that starting Oct.1, 2020, standard credentials won't be accepted by the TSA.

"Now is a great time to get a Voluntary Travel ID, because the federal deadline gets closer every day," said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. "MVD is making this process simple. Customers can go to ServiceArizona.com and make an office appointment. The website provides information about what documents that customers should bring with them to meet the REAL ID requirements for the Voluntary Travel ID. Appointments also help MVD offices run more efficiently, helping to get customers out of line and safely on the road."

The Voluntary Travel ID is an Arizona driver license or ID card that meets the additional identification requirements of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. Standard Arizona licenses or ID cards do not conform to the federal REAL ID requirements because of a state law that says those steps must be taken voluntarily by the license or card holder.

The cost is $25 for renewals and first-time issues. Per federal law, the credential is valid for eight years, in most cases. Customers whose photos need to be updated in the near future may wish to get the Voluntary Travel ID.

Forms of identification required for a Voluntary Travel ID include one document such as a birth certificate or a passport that proves identity; one document that proves a Social Security number such as a Social Security card or W-2 form, and two documents such as utility bills or bank statements that prove Arizona residency.

For a list of examples of identification documents and for additional information, please visit the Voluntary Travel ID section of the ADOT website at azdot.gov/TravelID.

Mayor Kiko Munro Presides over Graduation of Youth Patrol

Mayor Kiko Munro, accompanied by parents, teachers, instructors, and program leader Officer Jose Tlaseca, delivered graduation acknowledgments to the 37 members of the first and second classes of the Youth Patrol for their work, dedication, and commitment.

At the ceremony, which marked the first anniversary of the Youth Patrol initiative, the mayor also swore in 47 young men and women who represent the third generation of the program. In order to graduate, the incoming class will need to undergo the first corresponding module: first aid, fire training, physical conditioning, military instruction, personal defense, and tumbling.

At the end of the ceremony, mayor Munro congratulated the young men and women who represented Puerto Peñasco and the state of Sonora by participating in the very first Northwestern Youth Patrol competition, held recently in Ensenada, B.C, where they finished within the top 5 spots out of 12.

The Great Rubber Ducky Race is June 10 - THE DUCKIES ARE COMING... RELEASE THE QUACKIN

.

This is the race that we've all been waiting for. Not an off-road race, a regatta, or even a triathlon. No, it's the annual rubber ducky race. Get ready for excitement and fun while rooting for your duckies (although there is really no way to tell them apart until one of the volunteers looks at the number on the bottom).

The basic premise is that you buy (actually rent) a ducky or duckies and hope they make it to shore sooner than the others. Kind of like horse racing without any stats or studying to do in order to place your wagers. Pretty much all luck.

Of course, all the monies collected will go towards the fantastic Adopt-A-Classroom charity, which helps to supply local schools with the materials and funds needed to function. Some of the schools in town are on a much tighter budget than you can imagine.

Here's a message from Mark and Barb Olszewski, founders of Rocky Point Adopt-A-Classroom Charity:

Thank you so much for supporting our charities in Rocky Point. The Rubber Duckies are now available to purchase for the Great Rubber Ducky Race to benefit Adopt-A-Classroom of Puerto Penasco. We have some great prizes coming up for this event.

Just to name a few we have a 2 night stay at one of the Sonoran Resorts, a Gorgeous Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers GLYPH Necklace donated by Laury Burns, Golf from the The Links at las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, Massage and Pedicure from La Spa at the Sonoran Spa Resort, special ducky hats that were signed (and worn) by some of the bands that played at Circus Mexicus, and so much more.

Please support Adopt A Classroom this year to help us get our budget for the upcoming school year that begins in August. Also any donations of school supplies are always welcome and can be dropped off at any Sales Office at the Sonoran Resorts, Giuseppi's Espresso in Rocky Point, Latitude 31 Rocky Point, or Rocky Point Times Newspaper.

The Duckies are $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00 you may email me at [email protected] or call Barb O at 602-324-9529 MX Cell 638-114-2406. You can pay for Duckies on PAYPAL or mail a check to Barbara Olszewski PO Box 695, Lukeville , AZ 85341 You can also contact Sandy Spain at Rocky Point Times.

The Great Rocky Point Rubber Ducky Race will begin from the deck of The ABOUT TIME motor yacht. Gentle volunteers will be setting all the little Duckies loose while trying not to ruffle any feathers . The ABOUT TIME will depart Port around 8:30ish or as soon as we can wrangle the Ducky wranglers and get them heading out.

DUCKY DUMP Time around 9:30 - 10ish. and will be in front of the Sonoran Spa Resort & Sonoran Sea Resort... We are planning to meet up with beach volunteers at a selected location prior to the Great Rubber Ducky Race. If you want to be one of the BEACH volunteers Please get hold of Barb O. or Sandy S.
Tiburones Baseball Season Going Strong

The Puerto Penasco Tiburones Baseball season is still going strong and you still have plenty of chances to go see our home town team right here in Rocky Point, at the beautifully renovated stadium. If you've never been to a game, do yourself a favor and give it a try. You will be sure to return again and again after you find out how inexpensive and truly entertaining the games can be. Snacks and buckets of beer on ice are available for the asking and you're not going to pay $10 for a hot dog and a beer either. Treat yourself to whatever you want during the game, and you'll probably come home with your wallet being only $10 or $20 lighter. General seating is $60 pesos, V.I.P. seating is $100 pesos and children are $30 pesos.  Beer has consistently been $1.50 USD. Buy tickets on game day anytime after 4 pm. This is baseball like it used to be in the USA before everything got crazy expensive and complicated.

The Tiburones de Puerto Peñasco team competes in the Northern League of Mexico and participats in the Northern League of Sonora. They are based in Puerto Peñasco at Francisco León García stadium, having a capacity of 3,500 and featuring 260 new VIP seats. The Tiburones de Puerto Peñasco returned to the Northern League of Mexico in 2015.

They have achieved 4 Championships: in 1974, in 1978 against Algodoneros de San Luis, in 1979 against Membrilleros de Magdalena and in 2013 against Rojos de Caborca, all in the Northern League of Sonora. In addition to a Subchampionship in 1975 against Rojos de Caborca.
Oxxo Stores are Everywhere and They Continue to Multiply

You can't go far in Mexico without seeing an Oxxo store, and you'll be seeing even more of them as time goes by. Mexico's largest convenience store chain and one of its most successful retailers, with 11,850 outlets in operation throughout the country and in Colombia, opens more than 1,000 new stores every year.

The reasons for its success, according to a report in El Financiero, are in logistics, rented locations and no franchises. It is seven times larger than its nearest competitor 7Eleven, and is in third place behind Walmart and Chedraui in terms of sales per square metre, a figure that comes in at more than 10,000 pesos.

And figures from the first quarter of this year show that those productivity numbers are growing faster than they are at the two big-box retailers, which actually recorded declines.

Launched in 1978, Oxxo is owned by Femsa, proprietor of Coca-Cola Femsa and one of a handful of Mexican companies that have thrived internationally.

So what is Oxxo's formula for success? El Financiero asked some specialists for some clues:

Oxxo is not a franchise. Most stores are operated under a commission contract and others directly, for the purpose of maintaining absolute control over products and service.

It has a real estate division. This division is charged with identifying ideal locations and defining the expansion strategy based on population densities. It currently has a very high density in the northern states with one store per 4,700 people; in the center of the country there is one for 14,000 inhabitants.

It doesn't buy, it rents. The majority of its locations are rented. Instead of investing in real estate, Oxxo prefers to invest its money into opening a greater number of stores and begin to generate cash flow without making a bigger initial investment.

Logistics. With 16 distribution centers in Mexico it can work with suppliers who might have limited capacity for delivering products. This permits a broader selection of goods.

Additional services. Customers can make credit card and utility payments, pay for various services and buy cellular airtime.

Development of prepared products. It offers prepared foods of brands such as Andatti and Delixia and snacks such as those of Bitz, and the launch of O'Sabor and Saldazo debit cards which are linked to Banamex accounts. Pharmaceutical products are another attraction.

According to figures released by Femsa, each Oxxo store on average serves 759 customers a day.
Peso Under Pressure from NAFTA, Elections

22 pesos to the US dollar? It's a possibility due to NAFTA uncertainty

Peso's value has been trending downward for several weeks

The Mexican peso could trade at up to 22 to the U.S. dollar between now and the July 1 presidential election due to continuing uncertainty over the outcome of negotiations to update the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), according to analysts.

The slow-moving trilateral talks are already placing significant pressure on the currency, with the dollar selling for 20.20 pesos at Citibanamex recently.

That price is the highest the dollar has been since March 2017 and is the result of a downward trend for the peso that has continued for five consecutive weeks. On wholesale foreign exchange markets, the currency closed the week trading at 19.95 pesos to the dollar.

In addition to NAFTA uncertainty, the news agency Bloomberg said that presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador's commanding lead in opinion polls has also contributed to the 8.7% drop in the peso's value against the U.S. dollar since the end of the first quarter.

The prediction for 22 pesos to the dollar comes from two high-ranking officials at two different business groups.
The head of industrial promotion for the National Chamber for Industrial Transformation (Canacintra) told the newspaper El Universal that if NAFTA renegotiations continue to drag on in the coming months, he expected that the exchange rate would maintain an average of 21 pesos to the dollar.

However, if the United States remains inflexible in the demands it is pushing for, Juan Manuel Chaparro said, the dollar could hit 22 pesos, with part of the uptick "arising from the results of the upcoming elections."

José Luis de la Cruz, the general director of the Institute for Industrial Development and Economic Growth (Idic), told El Universal that "if [NAFTA] uncertainty continues and there's not a clear message that the negotiation is going to continue . . . the exchange rate could reach 21 pesos to the dollar."

The Idic director added that in an extreme scenario the dollar could sell at 22 pesos, citing the possibility of United States President Donald Trump following through with threats he has made to terminate the 24-year-old deal, and the introduction of tariffs on Mexican metal exports to the U.S.

While not citing the 22-peso figure, strategists for financial multinational Morgan Stanley wrote in a note that the peso could lose 10% of its value if the trade deal is terminated.

On the other hand, if a new pact is agreed to and signed this year, the strategists anticipated a 5% jump in the peso's value.

"FX [foreign exchange] is the main shock absorber for any change to the NAFTA policy framework or to expectations," the note said.

The strategists also said that Mexican equities may gain 2% if a deal is reached but if NAFTA is terminated, share values could drop by as much as 19%.

Two other analysts consulted by El Universal predicted a more favorable outlook for the peso.

Juan Carlos Alderete Macal, a senior foreign exchange strategist for Banorte, said that he sees the peso ending May at 19.80 pesos to the U.S. dollar before reaching a slightly better exchange rate of 19.50 in June.

Alderete made his prediction despite taking into account comments from United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who said Thursday that "there are lots of issues to be resolved" and that the three countries are "nowhere near" a deal.

"That creates greater uncertainty about who will be in charge of the negotiation in the case that it extends a lot longer, and there is a transition [of power in Mexico and the United States], and what the position of both parties will be," Alderete said.

If a new NAFTA deal is negotiated and interest rates in the United States remain steady, a rate of 18 pesos to the dollar is possible between now and the presidential election, said the general director of the Center for Private Sector Economic Studies (CEESP), Luis Foncerrada Pascal.

However, judging by Lighthizer's remarks, the former outcome would seem unlikely.

Mexico Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo, however, was more optimistic, saying that with "creativity and flexibility" the still unresolved issues could be dealt with quickly.

"There are lots of issues to be resolved, but they're issues of 'yes and no' and don't need technical sophistication," he told reporters. "It's an issue of having the political will."

Guajardo, Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland met in Washington D.C. last week amid increased pressure to reach a deal because of a United States congressional deadline and the upcoming Mexican elections.

Negotiations between the respective technical negotiating teams continued in the United States capital this week.
However, the May 17 cut-off set by U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan to give the U.S. Congress a chance to pass a new agreement was missed and Mexicans will go to the polls in just six weeks.

Among the issues that the three countries still need to reach consensus on in order for a new deal to be struck are rules of origin for the automotive sector, Mexican wage levels in the same sector and proposed changes to a dispute settlement mechanism.
Did You Know: Arizona's Slanted Southern Border Was Negotiated

Ever wondered how Arizona's southern border got its shape? Why, for instance, doesn't the state line go straight across? Why is the border on an extreme slant? At least one answer may lie in a group of land surveyors who worked the area in the days before statehood and, more specifically, about what they'd been drinking when they drew the line.

When it comes to the Arizona state line, historians say there's an old wive's tale that goes something like this: The land surveyors, who were in Nogales at the time, were looking for a drink and found that the closest bar was in Yuma. While making the trip, they actually marked the state line. But, did you know the slanted borderline was really a decision made by the U.S. and Mexico?

"Instead of being a story of great intrigue and excitement," said  John Southard, an Arizona historian. "When you boil it down to its simplest form, it's a real estate transaction."

Southard said after the Mexican-American War, the U.S. acquired many Southwestern states from Mexico, including Arizona. At the time, Arizona was bordered by the Gila River on the south and the U.S. wanted to claim more territory by extending it further.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico James Gadsden negotiated the purchase of land further into Mexico. He came up with several proposals, most including what the U.S. government had in mind.

"There was a proposal to extend U.S. territory down to Guaymas, which is a port on the Gulf of California," Southard said. "It was actually held by the Americans during the Mexican-American War for a brief period."

Southard said Mexico's Baja California was also part of the original plan. The U.S. saw this as a way to ensure greater access to commerce.

Not wanting to divide its territories of Baja California and its main land, the Mexican government refused the plan. The U.S. wasn't sure this plan would be ideal either. There was a contentious issue clouding the country at the time, the debate over expanding the reach of legalized slavery for growing crops, such as cotton.

"Abolitionists and other opposed to the expansion of slave-holding territory objected to the idea of obtaining such a large swath of land and particularly a port that could increase the trade possibilities for cotton growers and other slave holders," Southard said.

Tensions were still high after the Mexican-American War. And the U.S. and Mexico were afraid of further dividing their respective countries, so the two sides agreed upon a simpler Arizona-Mexico border, the one we have today. Ultimately, the U.S. acquired the land needed for an all-weather transcontinental railroad.
Mexico Does Regulate Use of Drones

Drones are becoming much more popular, affordable, and easy to use. They take great photos and video, and they are just downright fun to use. So, what would be better than taking your drone along on vacation to Rocky Point? Well, not so fast. Mexico, just like everyone else, is scrambling to come up with rules to regulate the safe use of drones as they become more and more popular with the general population.

If you have a very small drone (under 4.4 pounds), you should be just fine bringing it along with you. But, if your machine is heavier than that, you might want to know some of the new rules. As far as I know, these rules have not been enforced as of yet, but it's usually best to know them and understand that you could face penalties or have your drone confiscated if you break them.

Mexico has published rules governing the use of drones, allowing people to operate the smallest drones in daylight without a permit but with safety rules.

Mexico's Transportation Department has established three classes of drones according to size:

The smallest weigh 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) or less. They won't require a permit, but like all other drones must stay 9.2 kilometers (5.72 miles) away from airports and 900 meters (985 yards) from helicopter pads.

Medium-size drones are defined as weighing between 2 kilograms and 25 kilograms (55 pounds), and require a permit unless they're operated on the grounds of a flight club.

Under rules published earlier this year, large drones over 25 kilograms will require an operating permit and the operator must also have a pilot's license.
Huaraches con Carnitas

Ready to discover the tacos cousin? Learn how to make huarache.

There may never be a time when tacos are overrated, but for the days when you want to step outside the obsessed taco world, there is another Mexican specialty out there. Introducing the Mexican Huarache; an authentic dish of Mexico. Popular in Mexico City, huaraches consist of a masa base that is fried in an oblong shape, and filled with a variety of topping such as potato, salsa, onions, and meats.

The name "Huarache" is derived from the shape of the masa, similar to the popular sandals of the same name. The word Huarache is originally from Purépecha and the Nahuatl word for huarache is kwarachi. Huaraches are similar to sopes but differ in shape.

Huaraches originated in Mexico City in about the early 1930s. Their origin was at a stall along La Viga navigation channel, where Mrs. Carmen Gomez Medina prepared tlacoyos, but because the shape of the new "invention" of Mrs. Gomez was different from that of a sope or a tlacoyo, people started to call it "huarache". Not a terribly exciting history, but the huarache has become wildly popular throughout Mexico and is gaining popularity in many parts of USA as well.

Huaraches con Carnitas Ingredients:
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. For dough, in a medium bowl combine masa harina, baking powder, and salt. In a small saucepan heat broth until warm; add the 2 tablespoons oil. Stir broth mixture into masa harina mixture. (If necessary, add enough additional broth to make dough cling together.)
  2. Divide dough into nine portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a thin oval shape about 4 inches long and 2-1/2 to 3 inches wide, building up edges slightly. (As you work, keep dough portions and ovals covered with damp paper towels to prevent them from drying out.)
  3. In an extra-large skillet heat 1/4 inch of oil over medium heat until hot. Using a wide spatula, carefully add two or three of the shaped dough portions at a time to hot oil; cook for 6 minutes or until browned and crisp, turning once. Drain on paper towels.
  4. Arrange fried huaraches on a very large baking sheet. Spread each with a thin layer of refried beans and a thin layer of enchilada sauce. Sprinkle shredded Carnitas and Cotija cheese on top. Bake for 5 minutes or until heated through. Top with cabbage, avocado, tomato, and crema.
Carnitas Ingredients: Directions:
  1. Trim fat from meat. Cut meat into 1-1/2-inch cubes. In a Dutch oven cook meat, half at a time, in hot lard over medium-high heat, stirring to brown meat evenly. Remove meat from Dutch oven. Add onion and garlic to Dutch oven; cook until lightly browned and tender. Return all of the meat to Dutch oven.
  2. Add the water, orange peel, orange juice, thyme, salt, oregano, crushed red pepper, and bay leaves to Dutch oven. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 2 hours. Remove lid; increase heat so mixture boils gently. Cook, uncovered 30 to 40 minutes or until nearly all of the liquid has evaporated, gently stirring occasionally. Discard thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Using a slotted spoon, transfer meat to a serving bowl.
Enjoy!
Ordinal Numbers in Spanish

Cardinal numbers in Spanish are fairly straightforward until you get into the billions whereas ordinal numbers - first, second, third, etc. - get complicated way before then, and are certainly more complex than they are in English.

The numbers from one to ten, or more precisely first to tenth, are worth committing to memory as they appear frequently:

Primero - first
Segundo - second
Tercero - third
Cuarto - fourth
Quinto - fifth
Sexto - sixth
Séptimo - seventh
Octavo - eighth
Noveno - ninth
Décimo - tenth

When the numbers get into the tens - i.e. 11-19 - you use décimo in the first place and add primero through noveno; therefore:

Décimo primero (or undécimo) - 11th
Décimo segundo (or duodécimo) - 12th
Décimo tercero -13th
Décimo cuarto -14th
Décimo quinto 15th
Décimo sexto - 16th
Décimo séptimo 17th
Décimo octavo - 18th
Décimo noveno - 19th

A similar structure applies for cardinal numbers 20 through 90, thus:

Vigésimo - 20s
Trigésimo - 30s
Cuadragésimo - 40s
Quincuagésimo - 50s
Sexagésimo - 60s
Septuagésimo - 70s
Octogésimo - 80s
Nonagésimo - 90s
Centésimo - 100th
Milésimo 1,000th

Several points need to be made here.

Separate or together

21st through 99th can be written as one word or separately, as they have been above. For example, 23rd can be written as vigésimo tercero or vigesimotercero. Note that vigésimo loses its accent when used as a prefix in a single word, since accents in Spanish are applied according to the position of the stressed syllable.

Gender agreement

The ordinal numbers also have to agree in gender with the noun, using an 'a' ending for feminine and 'o' ending for masculine, for example:

El décimo cuarto partido - the 14th match ( partido, masculine).

La décima quinta vez - the 15th time ( vez, feminine); but if expressed using one word, it becomes la decimoquinta vez, with no accent on decimo, and no 'a' in the middle of the word, although it ends with 'a'.

While on the subject of gender agreement, when the ordinal number precedes a masculine noun in the case of first and third, the ordinal number drops the 'o', for example:

Mi primer libro - my first book.
Nuestro tercer aniversario - our third anniversary.
But,
La primera semana - the first week.

This may all appear unnecessary when there are simpler ways to deal with ordinal numbers, but it is worth knowing since they are used frequently in formal text and speech.

Using 'avo' for 'th' and fractions

You can, of course, just add the ending "avo" to the cardinal number, which would be roughly equivalent to the English "th". For example, 11th would be onceavo, 23rd would be veintitresavo, 48th cuarentayochoavo, etc. These can also be written 11avo, 23avo, 48avo (there are variations on these endings).

The avo endings are also used to express fractions. For example, one twelfth, un doceavo; one twentieth, un veinteavo (note, *not un vigésimo*).

Using ordinal numbers instead

Another acceptable practice, and a way around complex ordinal numbers, is simply to use the cardinal number, e.g. the 158th anniversary of the Reform War could be expressed as the " aniversario ciento cincuenta y ocho." No centésimo; no quincuagésimo octavo. No gender agreement to worry about either.

For additional clarity you can say " número" before stating the number. For example, " Piso número ocho" for eighth floor, or even just " piso ocho."

Other uses

Here are two other uses where ordinal numbers in Spanish may be commonly used or heard in everyday conversation:

When referring to decades such as the 1980s or the 1960s, in Spanish the number can be expressed in singular or plural. For example, los ochenta or los ochentas; los sesenta or los sesentas. Either way is fine.

Spanish also has a version of the unspecified ordinal number: enésima vez. For example, " te lo digo por enésima vez" - I'm telling you for the umpteenth time (literally, "the nth time").
