BEACHFRONT

It's HOT. It's HUMID. It must be August in Puerto Penasco. Yes, it's August and, like every August, the heat and humidity are here for a couple months. But, the heat is definitely not keeping people away from our little city on the Sea. We have been super busy and condo occupancy has been way up. And, considering that it's hot in Phoenix, in Tucson, in Mexicali, and in Hermosillo, where would you rather be? Me too.

There have been many activities going on around town as visitors enjoy the beaches, pools, restaurants, and bars. The condo and hotel rentals have had high occupancy rates as well, and it seems that everyone is making money again. It has been great to see this little city grow and prosper year after year as more people discover us. At this point, I have lived here full-time for over 10 years and have been visiting regularly for about 25. I have seen so many changes and it's hard not to have mixed feelings about some of them. The growth and prosperity are great, but on the other hand, we've lost a bit of that sleepy little fishing village feel to a more modern tourist destination city. In reality, it's still here if you just know where to look :)

Las Vegas Night went off smoothly again this year. Sonoran Sky's onsite restaurant, Cielito Lindo Fine Mexican Cuisine, served New York steak and shrimp this year and everyone loved it. We had a jazz band playing for the first time this year as well, and it was a very nice addition. This was number 7 and after so many years, it has become easier to plan and prepare for the event. The Sonoran Resorts tries to make it a little better every year and tries to add some new twist or surprise every year. As much fun as it is anyway, keeping it fresh and exciting makes it even better. I will add more information next month about the donations made from this year's contributions.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for about 10 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Las Vegas Night 2018 Enjoyed by All in Attendance

As we've become accustomed, the annual Sonoran Resorts Las Vegas Night for Charity, held on the 7th of July this year, brought fun for the large number of partiers and the funds will again make the going a little easier for local charitable causes.

After seven years, and with so many repeat attendees, our event has taken on a jovial reunion atmosphere of old friends celebrating life, participating in authentic casino games, vying for a share of the hundreds of really nice prizes, meeting new friends while taking the opportunity to help the friendly Mexican citizenry of this little slice of paradise by the sea where thousands of expats love to call home and thousands more love to visit.

Air conditioned comfort inside the Los Volcanes Ballroom of Sonoran Sky's luxury beachfront Resort was the perfect venue to spend a July evening while outside the weather was sweltering. Top chef, Tony Acuña, from Cielito Lindo Fine Mexican Cuisine, the onsite restaurant at the Sonoran Sky, provided a delicious steak and shrimp meal for all to enjoy.

The gaming tables sparkled with political and business leaders, including recently reelected Mayor Kiko Munro and his wife Linda Pivac, along with personalities from both sides of the border. The list is too long to single out but there were several who were in attendance and having fun at Las Vegas Night. Many of them have been to every one of the annual events as well.

No one will disagree that among the dozens of volunteers who helped put Las Vegas Night together, we really, really need to throw a shout out to a couple from Tucson who have been nothing less than an integral part of the success of this event since day one of its concept. He is the guy you've seen every year in the white tuxedo shirt and silk bow tie hosting, announcing, auctioneering, assuring that everyone was aware of every aspect of what was happening and going to happen throughout the evening, and before the event he was the one who trained the cadre of volunteer dealers. That individual, to whom we are deeply grateful, is Randy Van Hulle, owner of Ace Casino Equipment of Tucson since 1987 with casino expertise developed from serving well over 4,000 corporate casino functions. Together with his wife, Linda, who always volunteers as a dealer, the couple love Puerto and obviously love what they do as a career. Thank you Randy and Linda for making Las Vegas Night such a success!

Those of you who could not make it down for the event this year, please mark your calendars for the first Saturday in July next year, July 6th (still on July 4th weekend) so you don't miss out on this phenomenal night of friends, fun and charity.

In next month's newsletter I will have all the details on the funds raised and to which charities they have been allocated. Stay tuned!
Kiko Munro Wins Mayoral Reelection and Makes History

Kiko Munro, from the Sonora Coalition (PAN-PRD), made history in Puerto Peñasco on July 1, 2018, when he obtained reelection as Mayor of Puerto Penasco for the period 2018-2021.

In pleasant party atmosphere, accompanied by his wife, Linda Pivac de Munro, relatives, military officers, along with a host of citizen supporters, the winner of the Municipal Presidency thanked the citizens of Puerto Penasco and promised to continue his work in the positive transformation and change for three more years.

"People have power and power can be used positively by people today. With your voter card and your vote, you have a voice and you were convinced and determined that in Peñasco we needed to continue the good that we have been doing in Peñasco for three years, for another three years. Thanks with all my heart, and I tell you that I am grateful and committed, and that I will not fail you. The next three years will even be better than the first three. "

Kiko Munro added that he needs all citizens to remain committed, firm, and convinced that they are one, that all are working together for Peñasco and that God is with Peñasco. Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club Installs New Board

By José Antonio Pérez for Rocky Point 360

On the evening of July 17th, Shandra Keesecker was sworn in as incoming President of the Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club (CR Mar de Peñasco, A.C.) following the club's successful year under the leadership of María Dolores Monteverde Sesma.

Accompanied by local authorities, friends, family, and fellow Rotarians, including from the Caborca Rotary Club District 4100 representative Rafael de la Rosa López and Club President Luis Enrique Riojas Duarte, the installation ceremony held at the Peñasco Expo Convention Center marked the beginning of the 2018-2019 Rotary Year under the theme "Be the Inspiration."

Before presenting the symbolic Presidential pin and gavel to the incoming Rotary board, Monteverde Sesma detailed the many activities the club carried out this past year. These included collection drives following seasonal hurricanes to assist other parts of the district, fundraisers such as the "World's Greatest Meal" for Rotary's Polio Plus program as well as the February Fish-Bowl Seafood Fest, collaboration with Rotary clubs and districts from Utah and Arizona, vision and dental clinics, as well as welcoming five new members to the local organization, among other feats.

It is worth noting, the 2017-2018 District Governor for Rotary District 4100 (spanning Baja California Norte and Sur, Sonora, and the northern part of Sinaloa) had announced earlier in the month that Monteverde Sesma and her board made up of Secretary Shandra Keesecker, Treasurer Carmen Martens, and Sergeant-at-Arms Enrique Rodriguez, were honored as one of the two best clubs recognized in the district due to their various activities throughout the year.

The incoming board (2018-2019), including President Shandra Keesecker, Secretary Oscar Palacio Soto, Treasurer Carmen Martens, and Sergeant-at-arms Arq. Pedro Lasso called on their fellow Rotarians to continue to work together for the benefit of the community in order to have a meaningful impact on society.

Cannonball Jellyfish Fishing Reactivates Economy of Northern Sea of Cortez

Due to the fact that in the Upper Gulf of California area fishing bans designed to protect endangered species such as the vaquita porpoise and the Totoaba, fisherman have had a hard time making a living. Jellyfish season allows a number of them to make a substantial portion of their annual income in a relatively short period of time by harvesting cannonball jellyfish.

These jellyfish look like a mushroom floating in the water. When disturbed the jellyfish secretes a mucus from its nematocyst (an organ consisting of a minute capsule containing an ejectable thread that causes a sting) which contains a toxin. The toxin damages small fish in the area and drives away most predators, except for certain species of crabs. Although not often, the toxins can cause cardiac problems in animals and humans, causing an irregular heart rhythm. The toxin is also harmful to the eyes when the nematocyst contacts the eyes. It can be very painful and is followed by redness and swelling. A cannonball jellyfish attacks only when instigated.

The National Fisheries Commission released 540 permits for the same number of vessels to harvest a species also known as "aguamala", or better known as cannonball jellyfish in English. The fishermen managed to produce around 35 thousand tons in 2017.

The harvest to date, this year, stands at about 23 thousand tons, which should be worth about 109 million pesos in monetary terms. This number comes a little more than a month after the start of the harvest season, and the expected harvest for the entire season is expected to be higher than last year, considering that at this time last year only 15 tons had been obtained. The season ends around the end of July but the numbers listed are the latest available.

The fishing method used could be considered by some to be a bit primitive or even nostalgic as fishermen actually leave their boats and scoop up the floating jellyfish in large mesh hoops or nets shaped similar to a spoon. Once the boat is filled to capacity, it's back to shore to unload and then back again to continue the catch.

The jellyfish product is highly profitable as a commercial commodity and is mainly sold to Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea, where it is used for food as well as in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.

The capture of jellyfish represents a very good economic return for the almost six thousand fishermen and workers involved in the short season with around 1,500 jobs at sea and more than 4,500 people who participate on land in processing plants and other related tasks.
Did Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe Visit Puerto Peñasco?

By Contributor Moka Hammeken

I was surfing online when suddenly I came across a historic photo with the caption: Marilyn Monroe visiting Puerto Peñasco with baseball star Joe DiMaggio and the famous Mexican umpire Carlos Alberto González, in July of 1953!
Could it be?

The photo shows a young lighthearted Marilyn sitting on the bow of a boat, with a desert landscape and house in the background. One of the photos shows her with DiMaggio and González, standing along the train tracks that used to make its way to the docks.

The couple, who attracted thousands of stares wherever they went, surely in a move to step out of the limelight and tabloids, a few months before their wedding in January of 1954 took off from San Francisco for a romantic trip south. They allegedly crossed the border and made their way to Puerto Peñasco, then a very discrete and romantic fishing village, which provided them with the privacy and beach life they sought.

DiMaggio and Monroe then returned to Russian River in California, where DiMaggio's brother lived and, according to an article by the "Voice of Broadway", where they went for quality family time before becoming man and wife.

Yet, the photos that appeared at an auction of Profiles in History, Hollywood Auction 65 Catalog, indicate a secret romantic escape to the beaches of Puerto Peñasco!

It' not really hard to believe DiMaggio would bring his soon to be bride to this area, considering Sonora is a baseball state at heart (Guaymas is said to be the birthplace of baseball in Mexico), and even now our beaches and the Tiburones (local baseball team) welcome several baseball stars to town every now and again.

And so, a story of baseball and glamour, in which Puerto Peñasco participated as a discrete confidant.

Tourist Assistance Unit Agents Assist in Beach Cleanup

A few years ago, Mayor Kiko Munro formed an elite unit called the Puerto Peñasco Tourist Assistance Unit, or TAU for short. Over the years, these men and women have proven their value to our community many times over, in matters ranging all the way from giving directions to actually saving lives. With tourist season in full swing, you can bet that these guys are busy doing what they do best - helping and protecting people, acting as first responders to accidents on the beach, and overall working to make visits to our city as safe and fun as possible.

Besides their "normal" daily activities of acting as friendly liasons to our city, this group takes on special projects and supports good causes to help the overall well being of our city, our residents, and of course, our tourists. Last month, they embarked on one such operation.

As we all know (or should know), it takes a non-stop effort to keep our beaches clean and to retain our "clean beach" certification bestowed on us by the Federal Government. In order to help tourists and beachgoers assist in the cleanup, our fearless agents, donned in clothing much too heavy for the hot day at the beach, delivered around 400 trash bags to the crowds and assisted in the cleanup and disposal of trash before it had a chance to be left behind or to blow away. Of course, picking up after ourselves is hard work so the TAU also delivered 450 bottles of beverages similar to Gatorade, intended to replace electrolytes.

Containers have also been placed strategically along the beach and they are emptied regularly, so the TAU and all of us ask that everyone respect our beaches and pick up after yourselves. While you're at it, go ahead and pick up after someone else if they weren't considerate enough to do so. We will all be better off for the efforts.
Making the Entire Sea of Cortez into a Protected Area? Not Likely

The president of the National Chamber of the Fishing Industry, Humberto Becerra, opposed the possible legislation that wants to turn the Sea of Cortez into a protected natural area.

He pointed out that this marine zone, which includes the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa, generates 60 percent of the fishing production nationwide. In addition, he said, of that activity, one million 200 thousand people, live off fishing approximately.

He noted that the proposal to officially transform the Sea of Cortez into a protected natural area was made by an NGO that, according to Becerra, looks after the interests of tourism and mining entrepreneurs in Baja California.

He said that issuing opinions without consulting the direct actors within the industry ends up harming an entire sector that depends on the activity.

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Record Setting Tourist Numbers

Sectur is the government agency that oversees promotion of tourism, and tracking the flow of visitors. The most recent numbers show that in the first quarter of this year, Mexico reached a new high for tourist visits from abroad.

More than 10 million visitors came in the first quarter of 2018, a 12% increase over 2017. That's a big increase! The largest bump in numbers came during traditionally busy Spring Break/Easter Week in March.

This would seem to suggest that foreign tourists are 'voting with their feet', and deciding that the vacation experience that they get in Mexico outweighs the bad new that they hear about the country.

Enrique de la Madrid, Mexico's Tourist Secretary, pointed out that the numbers show that the rate of growth for international tourists visiting his country is growing at 12% annually, while the global tourism industry as a whole is only at 7%.

Barb's Dog Rescue Needs Volunteers

It's that time of year where many people have left Rocky Point for the hot summer. This also means a shortage of volunteers for a number of activities.  Barb's Dog Rescue always needs volunteers, but during the summer, the need is usually greatest. Your time is much appreciated, in whatever increments you can spare!

Residents Urged to Become Organ Donors

Donation of organs is a fundamental part of saving, and the General Hospital of Puerto Peñasco calls on the community to become organ donors, thereby helping to save lives
of those who need a transplant.

Dr. Pablo Martínez Valeriano, Director of the General Hospital in town said that since this is a comprehensive hospital that is part of the second level of care, the process of organ donation involves each person expressing their intention to be
an organ donor, and it is through the committee in charge of organ donation and it is integrated by the Ministry of Health and the Medical Arbitration Commission.

It is easy to be an organ donor, said Martínez Valeriano. You just need to elect to do so when you get your driver's license. You will be asked if you want to be an organ donor, and if you accept, you will become a fundamental part in the saving of lives through organ donation.

Stingray and Jellyfish Season is Here

Each year around this time, we hear reports of people who have experienced painful stings from jellyfish, both on the beach and in the water, and from stingrays being surprised and/or stepped on and striking with their barbed tail. Both are painful and both are fairly common during the hot summers here. They are not terribly common but be sure to shuffle your feet when you are walking in the shallow water and keep your eyes open for jellyfish floating in the water of laying on the beach. Enjoy the beach and the water, but it's best to pay attention to avoid a painful sting.

Fire Department Completes Course on Elevated Structures

Members from Municipal Civil Protection and the Puerto Peñasco Fire Department (UMPCyB) successfully completed an intensive course on addressing fires in elevated structures. The course, completed by 24 members from Civil Protection / Fire Department, 7 individuals from area hotel security, and a firefighter from Mexicali, was aimed at preparing staff to take part in building rescues. The course, which took place July 9th - 13th, was led by certified instructors from the Civil Protection and Fire Department Units of Guadalajara, Zapopan, and Tlaquepaque, Jalisco.

Civil Protection Director and Fire Chief Francisco Javier Carrillo Ruíz added the department would also be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Civil Protection offices of the aforementioned cities, based on the mutual conviction that expanding and strengthening cooperation in the area of training is valuable for all involved.

Mexico's 2018 Elections

Mexicans went to the polls on July 1, 2018 to elect a new President, as well as 128 members of the Senate, and 500 members of Congress.  Additionally, local elections took place in 30 of Mexico's 32 states, creating an 'election super-cycle' across the country-as candidates to the presidency, both houses of congress, state governorship, and city mayorship threw their hats into the ring for appointments to public office.

Mexico's political structure is formed through a republic of 32 states inside a union bound by a common constitution.  Mexico's republic used to comprise 31 states and a Federal District (Mexico City), although constitutional changes in 2016 transformed Mexico City into a state in its own right.

The Mexican federal government comprises an executive branch, a bicameral congress composed of a Senate in the upper house, a lower Chamber of Deputies, and an independent judiciary, headed by a Supreme Court.  States have their own constitutions; however, the states' constitutions cannot contradict the federal constitution, and state governance must adhere to a republican congressional system, headed by a state governor, who may not hold office for more than six years.

The elected president serves as the head of the executive branch, and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The president is elected for a non-renewable six-year term.

Congressional Representatives are elected for three-year terms in the case of the lower house and six years in the case of the Senate.

Mexican political candidates contest seats in a single-round plurality vote, sometimes referred to as a 'relative majority.'  This means that the winning candidate is the one who polls more votes than any other in the contest, even if the sum of those votes does not muster a majority.

The main interest in July's elections was the presidential race, which was contested by four candidates: three representing political coalitions, and one independent. Two of the coalitions are anchored by long-established political parties and led by José Antonio Meade for PRI, and Ricardo Anaya for PAN; the coalition anchored by MORENA, a relatively new party, was formed and is led by former Mexico City mayor and three-times presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador; and the independent candidate is Jaime Rodríguez Calderón.  Margarita Zavala, former First Lady and wife of former Mexican president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), also ran as an independent candidate, but announced her withdrawal from the presidential race on May 16.

Pre-poll surveys from across the political spectrum had given Mr. López Obrador a commanding lead over his rivals and when voting closed across the country, official counts revealed that Andrés Manuel López Obrador won by a landslide.  A short while after exit polls were published, his three adversaries held press conferences in which they conceded defeat to the leftist candidate who campaigned on tackling corruption, violence, and inequality.  As Mexico's President-Elect, he will be sworn-in to office on December 1, 2018.
Mexico Begins to Ban Ocean Choking Plastic Bags

The deputies of the Sonora State Congress approved the opinion presented by the Committee on Energy, Environment, and Climate Change, which has the purpose of prohibiting the manufacture, distribution, and use of polyethylene bags and all conventional plastic material, used and delivered in supermarkets, warehouses, and retail shops in general for the use of transporting products or merchandise to consumers.

Sandra Mercedes Hernández Barajas, deputy of the National Action Party (PAN), explained that the implementation of a State Program of Replacement of Plastic Bags for degradable or biodegradable bags was approved. State Registry of Manufacturers and Distributors of biodegradable bags will require that all persons that manufacture or market the bags must register. Finally, the law provides for a series of sanctions for those who do not comply with the obligation not to manufacture, distribute and use conventional bags.

"The Commission of Ecology and Sustainable Development of the State of Sonora, will implement a state program of minimization, reuse and recycling of plastic waste that will at least contain: campaigns of dissemination and awareness to the different sectors of society on the proper management of waste plastics in general, administrative and management strategies for the promotion and establishment of processes for selection, classification, collection and transport of plastic waste for recycling purposes, and courses or workshops on education and environmental regulations applicable to the integral management of waste " he added.

Mexico's Green Angles

If you're driving in Mexico and you encounter problems on the road, be it mechanical issues or any other type of trouble, the Green Angels are just a phone call away. They can assist you with car repairs, provide first aid, and offer you information about road conditions or tourist attractions. They are also a good resource for any traveler in Mexico if you need information about what to do in an emergency situation or if you have been the victim of a crime.

The phone operators are bilingual and can point you to the best action to take or other resources that may be helpful to you.

What are the Green Angels?

The Ángeles Verdes

(Green Angels) is a fleet of tourist assistance units with bilingual crew who are trained in mechanics and first aid. They patrol all federal and toll highways in Mexico and offer free assistance in the case of a breakdown, accident, or medical emergency. They are knowledgeable about road conditions, and can provide tourist information. The Green Angels are funded by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism. They have over 300 vehicles that patrol an average of 60 000 km of Mexican highways every day and over 22 million kilometers each year, providing assistance to motorists.

How the Green Angels Can Help You?

The Green Angels offer the following services:

Guidance and information about destinations, state and regional tourist attractions and services

Mechanical assistance and emergency radio support

Assistance in the case of accidents

Assistance to the general public in the case of disasters

The Green Angels are trained in auto mechanics and they carry tools and spare parts so they can perform emergency or temporary repairs, such as changing tires, dealing with an overheated engine or replacing a gas pump. They can help you arrange to have your car towed if more extensive repairs are required.

Trained in CPR, the Green Angels can administer first aid in the event of an accident or medical emergency.

How to contact the Green Angels?

You can contact the Green Angels by dialing 078 from any phone in Mexico. The operator will transfer your call to the dispatch service and they will communicate via radio with a unit in your area. If you don't have access to a phone, just pull over and put your car's hood up. When the Green Angels pass on their regular rounds, they will stop to offer your assistance.

The 078 phone number is a 24-hour hot line that you can call for telephone assistance at any time. The Angeles Verdes service, however, runs from 8 am to 6 pm every day of the year. Keep in mind that the Ángeles Verdes service is only offered on major highways and toll roads, so if you choose to travel on the free roads (carreteras libres), you're on your own, though you can still contact the 078 hotline for information.

Paying for the Green Angels Service:

Any service provided by the Green Angels is free of charge. You will need to pay for any parts, gas or oil they may use to get your car up and running, though. If you appreciate the assistance they give you, do offer a tip. They may or may not accept it, but it's a nice gesture to offer.
Yucatecan Scientist Obtains Patent for Unique Seawater Desalination System

Jorge Antonio Lechuga Andrade is a chemical engineer from Mérida, Yucatán, who has more than 30 years of professional experience. His work in the industry has led him to rethink the way of doing things, and that is how he came up with the idea of creating a water desalination machine which could also be 100 percent sustainable, and wouldn't damage the environment.

After six years of hard work, Lechuga Andrade has managed to patent his project to desalinate seawater and turn it into pure, fresh drinking water.

Proud to be from Merida, the researcher and former director of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), has managed to patent his invention not only in Mexico but also in the United States.

Before the patent is being granted, the project had to comply with certain tests and requirements on the system, basically to compare it with other similar devices existent in the market, in order to demonstrate its originality, innovation and sustainability.

The patents were granted by the Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property (IMPI) and by the United States Patent Office, both of which have a validity of approximately 20 years.

The system uses the technique of centrifugalreverse osmosis with "Dean vortexes" to desalinate seawater to make it drinkable, which makes it low cost, helps to save electricity and has a low impact on the environment.

In the same way, the production costs are much lower, since the same system allows a systematic cleaning of the membranes, an action that in other systems must be done manually.

In addition, once the desalination process is finished, the surplus water is returned to the sea, in order to avoid the impact on marine flora and fauna.

The Mexican inventor's Sustainable Water Desalinator offers many advantages compared to others, the reason why in 2015 was awarded with the National Award of the Mexican Institute of Chemical Engineers.

We all know that spending time outdoors is good for you on both a physical and mental level, but the benefits of spending time specifically at the beach have just been revealed.

That incredible feeling of peace and calmness that you experience at the beach is now being referred to as "blue space." That's what scientists have dubbed the effect that the combination of soothing smells and sounds of water have on your brain. The blue space is enough to make you feel at ease in a hypnotic sort of way.

When you notice how relaxed you feel at the beach, it's not just all in your head. Science says that it's a change in the way your brain reacts to its environment leaving you feeling happy, relaxed and reenergized.

Overall, this blue space effects you in four different ways.

1. Going to the beach reduces stress

Water is nature's cure to life's stressors. It's full of naturally occurring positive ions that are known for having the ability to make you feel at ease. So whether you jump in for a swim or simply dip your toes in the water, you're sure to experience a feeling of relaxation. That's one instant mood booster we could all use from time to time!

2. The beach boosts your creativity

Feeling like you're in a creative rut? Well, scientists now believe that the solution to this is the beach. Being in blue space allows you to clear your head and approach problems or projects in a more creative way. Much like meditation, the beach triggers a feeling of calmness that allows you to tune everything else out and reflect on what it is you've been needing to focus on.

3. Going to the beach can help reduce feelings of depression

Much like the effects that the beach has on feelings of stress and creative ruts, the beach also provides some relief to feelings of depression. The hypnotic sound of the waves in combination with the sight and smells of the beach can put you into a meditative space. In turn, you can clear your mind and reflect on life in a safe space away from the chaos of your daily life.

4. Overall, spending time at the beach will change your perspective on life

And that perspective is going to change for the better! Nature in general has always been a factor in healthy happy lives, but the beach in particular is so good for the soul.

So grab the SPF and pack a picnic, because it's time to head to the beach!
Horchata (Authentic Mexican Recipe)

Summer recipes are filled with refreshing ingredients and easy to cook. The best summertime recipes don't require you to slave over a hot stove or bake for hours at a time. No one wants to spend all of their time during the summer in the kitchen, so summertime recipes should also require little time and effort. Most of the best Mexican dishes require time and effort but there are light summer Mexican recipes as well. Horchata is a delicious rice (or coconut) based drink that you can find at most Mexican restaurants in the United States and almost everywhere in Mexico.

Horchata definitely adds a refreshing touch to any meal. Everyone that tries it seems to fall in love and is disappointed when it is gone. If you go to any Mexican restaurant, you will probably find some iteration of horchata. However, many of those are made from powder and don't have that authentic taste. Here's how to make a truly authentic Mexican horchata. It will take some patience and a little bit of preparation, but the results will be worth it.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup of white rice
  • 1 1/3 cup sugar (adjust depending on how sweet you want - 2/3 cup of sugar if you want it less sweet).
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 T vanilla
  • 1 Can (12 ounces) Evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 cup of milk or almond milk
  • 1 Liter of water
  • Ice
Instructions
  • Start by soaking the rice, cinnamon, and almonds in a bowl of water all night, or at least for 5 hours so that the rice softens slightly.
  • Strain the water from the cinnamon, rice, and almond mixture that were soaking, disposing of water.
  • Blend the cinnamon, rice, and almond mixture with evaporated milk until a smoother mix is formed and the grains of rice are completely ground.
  • Strain the resulting liquid into a pitcher, and add the sugar, vanilla, and milk. Mix well until everything is well combined.Add a liter of water, and serve with ice. Enjoy!
A Nasty Little Syllable

Modern conversations in Mexico are frequently interspersed with the word " güey" - pronounced "way"- which means several things and, just as often, nothing.

The word it derives from - buey- means ox, and was in finer times considered vulgar and insulting when applied to anyone. Its figurative meaning is that of mug, or sap, a connotation it still retains under its new spelling. In one of those changes in common usage which come about without anyone noticing exactly where or when, the "b" was replaced with a "g." And that, users will defensively assure you, takes the curse off it.

Now the word güey is common in banter among all kinds of people, although particularly the younger generations. Use of it has grown and its meanings are manifold, changing with the context and even the intonation.

¿Qué onda güey? can easily be translated as "what's up dude?," while ¡qué güey eres! still means what a fool you are,  ¡Oye güey! ... "Listen man ... " and so on. It can also simply mean guy, and while it generally refers to males, girls also occasionally use it when talking among themselves.

Its proliferation in everyday conversation is indicative of an overall decline in language standards from the street market to the boardroom, and it's perhaps not strange therefore that the word is seldom written with the corresponding umlaut to indicate that the "u" is to be pronounced and not merely there to make the "g" preceding the "e" hard-sounding, as in the case of " maguey," the succulent used to make pulque which is pronounced "magay."

The word has been abused to the extent that it has developed a meaningless fill-in role, and appears in some monologues once every three or four words. In this sense, it is seen as a mere substitute for vocabulary. Some time back, a local bookstore chain cottoned-on to the popularity of the monosyllabic, multi-purpose " güey" with an advertisement that said: "reading, güey, will increase, güey, your vocabulary güey."
