LIVE WEATHER STATION

BEACHFRONT

November is here and the weather is divine. We've had a couple cool snaps and a couple times it has gotten downright too warm in the afternoons again over the past month, but overall the weather has been just about perfect. There have been several days that I looked out at a sea of glass in the morning, wondering why I was headed for my office instead of heading out to sea for a day of fishing. But, I'm certainly not complaining and the spectacular views are awesome in themselves. If this month follows the normal pattern, November will be a beautiful month.

Mexico is a wonderful place to live. I have had the good fortune to have traveled around Mexico a bit, and each place that I visited has had it's own "character". I love Puerto Penasco most of all, and being in a tourist town offers the chance to experience holidays and traditions from both sides of the border and of both cultures. This time of year is the perfect example. Halloween from the USA, while mostly not observed throughout Mexico, is celebrated here in Rocky Point, and the celebrations for Dia de los Muertos, the actual Mexican celebration can be experienced and enjoyed here as well. Thanksgiving is also more typically celebrated in the USA than it is in Mexico but these days, our local Sam's club always has an extra supply of turkeys on hand as the holiday approaches. Christmas season is a holiday with many differences as well, but I guess that I'll leave that one to next month's newsletter.

The Sonoran Resorts host an Annual Holiday Food Drive each year. This year's collection efforts will begin within a week or two as we place large gift-wrapped empty boxes outside of our sales offices in each of the Sonoran Resorts lobbies. If you're in town, please drop off an item or two (or more) if you can. Then, each year in early January, we deliver all of the food collected to one of the groups in town who will distribute it to those in need. In past years, we have supported the senior citizens home, the local DIF municipal charity, and others. All donations are appreciated.

Rocky Point Rally is coming right up. This year, we are expecting record numbers and our condos are already fully, or almost fully sold out for rentals. I give the same advice to people thinking of visiting during the Rally as I do to people thinking of visiting over the Easter weekend: There will be a ton of people in town and it's one of the busiest weekends in the year. Generally, people will either love it or they will hate it, depending on what their expectations were for their stay here. It can be a great time, but if you're planning on a quiet time on the Malecon, you might want to pick a different time to visit. Sandy Beach and our resorts are usually pretty quiet as most of the activity goes on in town, specifically on the Malecon and on Calle 13. If you have never experienced one of the Rallys here, it is definitely something that you should do at least once. Chances are you'll have such a good time that you'll come back every year.

Shrimp season is in full swing and the fresh shrimp are as good or better than you could hope they are. Lots of constructions projects going on around town, both large and small, and businesses have reported record crowds this year. Our sales remain very strong with our record year pulling further ahead of the runner up. Times are good in Rocky Point.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for about 10 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Baby Olive Ridley Turtles Released on Sandy Beach

The first 28 sea turtle hatchlings were released on October 14th at Sandy Beach in front of the Sonoran Sun Resort, following the long incubation period which began when they had been carefully collected from the same location almost two months ago.

The Director of the Federal Maritime Land Zone explained that on this occasion members of the Clean Beach Committee volunteers as well as several tourists participated in the enjoyable spectacle of releasing turtles. A human fence, surrounding the scurrying babies, was formed to give them security in their seemingly endless journey from the nesting area to the sea.

Agents from the Tourist Assistance Unit, PROFEPA, ZOFEMAT, CEDO, as well as public safety officers were present in addition to biologist Itzel Cardenas of the Vidanta Group, as well as several members of the public were all in attendance to observe the little rascals scampering down the beach towards the sea.

A record number of Olive Ridley nests have been located this year along the beaches of Rocky Point, an encouraging sign that the endangered species may be recovering to some degree, if at least temporarily.

Itzel Carolina Cárdenas, biologist from the Vidanta group and authorized by the Federal Environmental Protection Office (PROFEPA) stated that more than 800 eggs had been found on nearby beaches this year. This is more than three times the number of eggs collect in recent years.

Eggs laid on the beaches near Puerto Penasco are collected and gestated in controlled conditions due to the heat of the summer season here and because of the extreme tide changes. When hatched, the baby turtles are released near the original nest location to begin their journey from beach to sea, and beyond.

Second Wind Turbine Finally Going Up

Installation of Rocky Point's second huge wind generator has begun after almost a year of anticipation of being announced. It's hard to miss the two towering structures to the North of Sandy Beach, just off of the road leading out of town towards El Golfo Santa Clara.

As part of the program "Sonora Energy", this new behemoth will begin its testing phase when assembly is complete, within a couple weeks, announced Tono Astiazaran, president of Energia Sonora A. C., during the recent "Energy Fair", where he explained that the new turbine will serve over ten thousand Sonoran families when it is completed.

"The energy that we are going to produce with this new turbine, in addition to the one that already operates in Puerto Peñasco will provide ten thousand five hundred families with an energy subsidy, which will allow all those enrolled in the program to receive a credit on future electric bills. The president of Energía Sonora A.C. reported that estimates show that the first rate reductions under the program will be reflected in the billing in November and December.

"Our main objective is to make Sonora a cheaper place to live. That is why we are providing families throughout the state the opportunity to join this unique social program, which in addition to providing us with substantial energy savings, allows us to take care of the planet because it is energy that does not pollute, "he said.

In addition, delivery of LED bulbs, which reduce electricity consumption, were delivered to the 320 attendees of the "Energy Fair" and also to about 400 households in the barrios which will benefit from the program. Participants were also presented with vouchers from another program named "Health is Energy".

The Clear Water Project   "Providing Sustainable Clean Water & Sanitation Solutions to Those in Need"

For most of us, having a bathroom with a working toilet and a functional shower is not considered a luxury, and getting clean after a hard days work is as easy as twisting a knob. That's just the way it is, right?

Unfortunately, this couldn't be further from the truth for hundreds of families living in impoverished areas in Mexico, including many in and around Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Bathing and washing their hands is a luxury for many. For them, something that is a basic human necessity is very often out of reach and it is a sad reality that they do not have access to clean water and sanitation needs.

The lack of access to adequate water and sanitation also means that disease is more easily spread and entire communities can be negatively affected by sickness and poverty. Mothers and fathers can find themselves unable to provide for their families when they aren't clean enough to get a stable job or are too sick to work, and children miss vital classroom time affecting their education and ability to get good jobs in the future.

The Clear Water Project, a non-profit organization based out of Peoria, Arizona, is aiming to change all that by providing families in the poorest areas of Puerto Penasco with access to showers, toilets, and sinks directly within their homes. Each family will also receive a septic tank, a 1,100-liter water storage cistern, and water contracts with the city. The water contracts will ensure that water is piped directly to the homes of those who currently have none. Although this is a step in the right direction, many times throughout the year, water supplies are cut off to the poorest areas of Penasco to do infrastructure problems or for tourism needs. The Clear Water Project looks to put an end to this and is currently working on developing a 25,000-liter underground water cistern. Water will be stored in times of plenty and disbursed to the community in times of need.

To help ensure that this much needed work is completed, The Clear Water Project has partnered with i6eight, another non-profit organization that has been positively impacting the most impoverished areas of Puerto Penasco for the last six years. Together they are determined to ensure that families in this area and around the world no longer go without clean water and sanitation needs.

These projects will not only help to ensure that our neighbors receive these basic human needs, but also will assist fathers and mothers in presenting themselves in an employable manner and will promote cleaner environments. This means fewer sick days for school children and entire communities. While safe water and sanitation are not the only contributing factors that enable families to climb out of extreme poverty, it is a necessary first step and The Clear Water Projects sole focus.

10 Reasons to Take A Family Vacation in Puerto Penasco

10/03/2017 03:42 am ET
Updated Oct 03, 2017

Mexico is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and one of the most frequented by families. Majority of these travelers usually visit Mexico's well-known spots like Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and the Riviera Maya which is unfortunate since Mexico is filled with smaller beach resorts screaming for our undivided attention.

Puerto Penasco makes its debut as the fastest growing tourist center in northern Mexico. Here, you'll find American and Canadian families residing and enjoying mini-vacations all year long soaking up the sun on the shores of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California), about 70 miles south of the border with Arizona.

This Mexican seaside destination has a list of family-friendly experiences for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Here are just a few of our favorites;

1) Take a stroll on the Malecón
@pintsizegourmets

In this area you will find lots of restaurants, gift shops, street performers and street food vendors. Many of the restaurants are multi-story so you can enjoy a meal with your family while over looking the passing crowds and beautiful view. Come prepared with Pesos as you'll be tempted to do lots of shopping. Sit and watch the waves crash over the sea wall during high tide or watch pelicans and seagulls enjoy the ocean breeze.

2) Kayak, Snorkel and Paddle Board in Choya

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Sonoran Resorts Promotes at Las Vegas Barrett-Jackson Show

Last month, two members of the Sonoran Resorts sales team attended the Barrett-Jackson Show in Las Vegas as "vendors" and ambassadors of Puerto Penasco. Barrett-Jackson is a high-end charity auto auction and show that attracts auto collectors and spectators from all around the world. There is a large area in which businesses can purchase space for a booth to promote their products and services. Most participants who purchase space are there to promote based on the overall affluence of the typical Barrett-Jackson attendee. "We have been seeing an increasing number of visitors from the Las Vegas area and decided that it was time to do some direct marketing there", said Jim Ringquist, Sonoran Resorts Director of Sales and Marketing. "Based on the early feedback, it appears that the show was a big success for us".

Members of the Sonoran Resorts sales team have been attending the Scottsdale Barrett-Show show every year for the past 5 years, but this was their first time in Las Vegas. Attending shows and events like these, not only helps to promote the Sonoran Resorts, they also help to introduce hundreds or even thousands of people to Puerto Penasco who may otherwise have never discovered our beautiful city by the sea. The next Barrett-Jackson show will be held at Westworld of Scottsdale on from January 13-21, 2018. Sonoran Resorts will once again be in attendance.

Balloon Fest Returns to Rocky Point

Rocky Point held its first Balloon Festival in January of last year and the same group, Ruta del Globo, will be putting on a follow up event February 23rd through 25th of this year.

This festival is a great addition to the long and growing list of Rocky Point events. It offers locals and visitors alike the opportunity to watch these beautiful balloons up close and personal. Balloon rides are available and the photo opportunities both from the ground and from the air, if you're brave enough, are great. Don't miss this great event.

The fight between Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, 115 pound champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), and the challenger and Rocky Point native, Juan Francisco "Gallo" Estrada, has become a reality with a confirmed month and location for the fight. If you can't be in Los Angeles in February 2018, be sure to tune in to HBO to catch the evening broadcast of the fight.

Fernando Beltrán, "Gallo" Estrada's promoter, confirmed that his star will fight for the belt that the Thai took from World Champion Roman last March. "We are close to setting the specific date, it may be February 17 or 24. It is a fight where we are sure that 'Gallo' Estrada will rise again and after the win, he will have the place he deserves, and not only that, maybe a space will be opened for the rematch with ' Chocolatito" he said.

Black & White Ball Reaffirms Commitment to Education

DIF's annual Black & White gala, which was held on September 30th at Peñasco's Expo Convention Center, reaffirmed support for the education of Puerto Peñasco's youth by surpassing organizer expectations.

The 41st Black & White Ball, organized by the Municipal Office on Integral Family Development (DIF) presided over by Linda Pivac de Munro, was warmly received by the Puerto Peñasco community who dressed to the nines in support of this noble cause. Proceeds from the evening are to go to ongoing support of the "Student House" in Mexicali, as well as scholarships for many high school and university students here in the community.

Host princess Roselyn opened the evening before the parade of the numerous "ambassadors" representing businesses, organizations, as well as cities including Puerto Peñasco, Caborca, Agua Prieta, Naco, and Sonoyta.  As is tradition, the 2017 Black & White Ball Queen was randomly selected by a message attached to the bouquets given to participants.  This year, Iris Chávez of Agua Prieta was awarded the honor of 2017 Black & White Ball Queen.

Authorities Stage Mock Oil Spill Drills

In a joint operation including the Navy, Municipal Public Safety, Civil Protection and Fire Departments, the Harbor Master, and the Red Cross, a series of mock drills were carried out to test rarely used specialty equipment and practice a quick-response cleanup of a simulated oil spill.

n Thursday, October 5, the Ministry of the Navy, in coordination with Municipal Public Safety, Civil Protection and Fire, Red Cross and Harbor Master's Office conducted a simulation of oil spills in the area of loading docks Puerto Peñasco, with the purpose of being prepared for a real contingency, and thus to safeguard the physical integrity of the Peñasquenses and visitors.

Hemodialysis Center Opens Doors at Last

After four long years, Puerto Penasco's first hemodialysis treatment center was able to open its doors and to give the first treatment to its very first patient. The well-known Prof. José González Varela, arrived on Saturday afternoon at the facility before members of the the Civil Association Integral Community Assistance Project which founded the center. Also in attendance were members of the San Peregrino group as several invited special guests who had supported the project.

Profra. Rafaela Félix Bernal, in her capacity as founding president of the Civil Association Integral Community Assistance Project welcomed the guests, and began her speech with "the wait is over, this day is a very special date for those of us who are part of this beautiful project, a non-profit project that was born out of a felt demand from the community, from those who suffer or have suffered the anguish and fatigue of not being able to resort to a nearby hemodialysis center "

Professora Felix was sure to acknowledge the huge support given by State Governor Claudia Pavlovich and Secretary of Health, Dr. Gilberto Ungson, who from the beginning showed much support for this project.

In closing, she stressed that their long time goal has been met, but with this comes a greater responsibility and commitment as they will now redouble their efforts in order to offer treatment to more people in need and to ensure that the facility becomes and remains a strong part of the community.

Puerto Penasco Taxis are Safe

Just in case you were wondering, taking a taxi in Rocky Point is a perfectly safe and convenient way to get around. With the occasional reports of abuses by taxi drivers in some of Mexico's large cities, Department of Transportation representative, Alfredo Vasquez Gonzalez spoke about the service and requirements of the taxi service in Puerto Penasco. "Taxi drivers and taxis in this municipality must go through various controls and procedures that ensure they are providing a safe service for the user", he explained.

He added that each unit is properly labeled, and the drivers are required to carry their current license and identification. He also commented that the radios are a tool that allows oversight and strict control of each the pickups and drop offs that are made. For example, when picking up a minor, the taxi driver is required to report the fact that they are minors along with their name and locations.

Vásquez González added that fortunately in this city, we have not seen any serious situations such as are experienced in the large cities, particularly in certain areas of Mexico City. "Although we are not exempt from minor situations or problems, here in Peñasco there have not been serious situations. It is also a small municipality where there is more control and therefore more security", he detailed.

AIMpenasco Opens First Homework Club to Support Kids in Need

Asistencia Integral para Menores de Puerto Penasco, A.C.  (AIMpenasco) is a Mexican Civil Association founded in 2015 by Arnott and Kathleen Duncan. The Duncans formed the Association because they have a strong belief that where a child starts in life should not determine where they finish. They also believe that the most effective tool they can give a young person to change his or her place in life is access to education. When they learned that many children in Penasco do not have the resources or support necessary to attend school, let alone succeed in school, in August of 2016 they launched the 'Jovenes en Ascenso' program.

Led by a talented team of local professionals, in its first year the program provided ongoing, comprehensive support throughout the school year for 72 at-risk students from kindergarten through college.  All 72 of the students successfully completed last school year and this second year the program is supporting 156 students. Although the number of students served has more than doubled, the program already has a significant waiting list.

Students in the Jovenes en Ascenso Program are provided with the financial support and educational materials they need to be able to attend school-many of them for the first time. However, for many of the students served it is not enough to help them get started in school as many of them do not have anyone in their family who can help with homework or the resources and materials they need to succeed academically.  So, once they are enrolled in school students are followed by a team of professionals who assure that they have whatever support is necessary to overcome any obstacles to academic success they may encounter throughout the school year.

The First Homework Club Opens

With so many more students entering the program this year, it was clear to Kathleen and her local team that they would need to find an effective and efficient way to provide academic support and resources for all of their current and future students. So, on September 25th AIMpenasco opened its first Homework Club and they have plans to open two more clubs in the community. Their first club is a collaboration with the Palabras de Esperanza Community Center founded by George and Susie Stavros. The Club is staffed by certified teachers and college interns funded by AIMpenasco and operates from 9:00 - 12:00 and 2:00 - 5:00 Monday through Friday. Not only does this club provide the resources and materials the students need to succeed academically, but it also provides a safe place for them to go when they are not in school.

Kathleen Duncan says she never imagined spending her 'empty nest' years traveling back and forth from her home in Buckeye, AZ to Rocky Point trying to improve the lives of vulnerable kids there. However, she also says that this opportunity to impact an increasing number of young lives in such a significant way through this unique program is the most rewarding work of her life. "People ask me all the time why I keep going back week after week and continue to invest so much of my time, energy and resources in this program", said Kathleen recently. She shared that her response is always: "I keep going because these kids matter. I truly believe that every one of them is full of greatness." She also says that she is constantly surprised by how a relatively small investment can make such a difference in the lives of the kids they serve in Rocky Point. She explained, "when I tell people in the U.S. that it costs as little as $35 a month to sponsor a student in our program they are blown away. It is hard for us here in the U.S. to imagine that such a small investment can give a child access to a quality education that  can transform their lives."

Although AIMpenasco is a Mexican Civil Association, it is supported by the U.S. non-profit organization Steps of Love. To support the 'Jovenes en Ascenso' program by sponsoring a student or making a one-time donation go to www.stepsoflove.org. Donations are tax deductible in the U.S.

Marine Activity Halted in Vaquita Habitat

Upper Gulf of California ban is part of new recovery plan for the endangered species

A ban has been placed on all marine activity in the upper Gulf of California as part of efforts to save the vaquita marina porpoise from extinction.

The ban took effect yesterday and will end on December 17, and applies to all activities apart from those whose purpose is to aid the preservation of the world's smallest known cetacean.

To be enforced by the secretariats of Navy, Agriculture, Environment and Tourism, the restriction is intended to facilitate a conservation, protection and recovery plan that is now in process, and one that might be the last stand in the fight to save the vaquita.

It entails the capture of specimens of the porpoise so they can be relocated to a 46-square-meter pen at the new Vaquita Care Center, located in San Felipe, Baja California, in the hope that they will breed and reverse the decline in numbers.

A team of four trained dolphins arrived last month to track the vaquita so they can be caught. An estimated 30 remain.

Since 1993, the upper Gulf of California has been considered by the Mexican government as a natural protected area due to the diversity, biological richness and productivity of the various ecosystems that are found in its waters. Many of the aquatic species found there are considered rare, endemic and in danger of extinction.

Meanwhile, conservation organizations in the United States continue to press retailers to stop buying Mexican shrimp in a campaign to pressure the Mexican government to impose a permanent ban on all gillnet fishing in the upper gulf. Vaquita have been a bycatch of commercial fishing.

The Animal Welfare Institute, one of the groups behind the Boycott Mexican Shrimp campaign, said yesterday that Trader Joe's, a U.S. grocery store chain, had decided to stop buying shrimp from Mexico.

A partial ban on gillnets was introduced last June but the conservation groups claim it's not enough because two fisheries are exempt from it.

First Vaquita 'Rescued' in Bid to Save the Porpoise from Extinction

A project to save a small, critically endangered porpoise called the vaquita in the Gulf of California succeeded in capturing a 6-month-old calf in mid-October.

Veterinarians noticed signs of stress, so they made the decision to release it back into the wild, rather than keep it in a sea pen.

The project's leaders are heartened by the experience and hope to round up more vaquita to keep them safe from the still-present threat of gillnet entanglement in the Northern Sea of Cortez.

For the first time, a team of scientists has captured and then released a vaquita (Phocoena sinus), a rare porpoise in the Gulf of California, as part of a project called VaquitaCPR aimed at hauling the critically endangered species back from the edge of extinction.

"The successful rescue made conservation history and demonstrates that the goal of VaquitaCPR is feasible," said Rafael Pacchiano, the minister of the environment and natural resources in Mexico, in a statement. "No one has ever captured and cared for a vaquita porpoise, even for a brief period of time."

The VaquitaCPR team, comprising members from at least seven countries, caught a 6-month-old calf on Oct. 19 with the aid of underwater acoustic monitoring, but team veterinarians noticed that the animal seemed to be stressed out. Once they had taken tissue samples for later genetic testing, they released it back into the location where they had found it.

"While we were disappointed we could not keep the vaquita in human care, we have demonstrated that we are able to locate and capture a vaquita," said Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho, a government scientist and the head of VaquitaCPR, in the statement.

Short for "Vaquita Conservation, Protection and Recovery," VaquitaCPR is a Mexican government-led project aiming to find the porpoises in the wild and house them in specially built pens. It's a last-ditch effort to save the remaining vaquita, whose numbers have declined to fewer than 30, one that was recommended by the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita, known by its Spanish acronym, CIRVA.

Gillnets, now banned in the Gulf of California, still pose the persistent danger of entanglement to vaquita, whether as abandoned "ghost" nets or those used by fishermen hunting for a Critically Endangered fish called the totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi). Totoaba swim bladders fetch thousands of dollars in Asian traditional medicine markets.

Ultimately, the team plans to shelter caught vaquita in floating sea pens near the town of San Felipe until the animals have a better chance of survival. Crews are also searching for ghost and illicit nets with the help of U.S. Navy-trained dolphins and a boat from the Whale Museum in La Paz. VaquitaCPR said that the boat is responsible for pulling 274,320 meters (900,000 feet) of nets from the water.

Though the scientists weren't able to keep the animal from this first "rescue," Rojas-Bracho said that the process helped validate VaquitaCPR's ability to transport and assess the health of a captured vaquita.

The animal is sometimes referred to as the "panda of the sea" or by its Spanish name, vaquita marina, which translates to "little sea cow."

Pacchiano said this experience made him hopeful. "I am confident we can indeed save the vaquita marina from extinction."

The Monarch Butterflies in Mexico

From November to March each year, you can be witness to one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the forested mountains west of Mexico City: Monarch butterflies over-wintering in Mexico.

The very special Methuselah generations of butterflies migrate each year, leaving the colder northern climes of the U.S. and Canada to take winter refuge and breed in Mexico.

These migrating Monarch butterflies travel in colonies of about 20 million insects and will travel between 80-120 nautical miles per day, depending on the wind and other weather conditions. The butterflies take advantage of ascending warm-air currents, gliding in the thrust they provide, needing only to flap their wings when the air current diminishes a little or when they change their flight path. This technique uses their energy efficiently, and physically enables them to undertake the long journey.

The butterflies usually start arriving in early November, and between mid-late November and the end March, it's possible to visit one of the sanctuaries open to visitors and witness these remarkable insects in their natural habitat.

The Monarch Butterflies settle in the Oyamel fir tree forests which are situated west of Mexico City; along the eastern perimeter of the Mexican state of Michoacán, also bordering the State of Mexico. Once here, the butterflies cluster on the tree trunks and remain in the region for the winter.

As the sun heats the day, some of the butterflies will flutter in the forests and return to the tree trunks when the air cools in the evening.

The height of viewing season is between mid-January and the end of March. Before the mid-January, the air temperature on the mountain is colder and the butterflies don't flutter as much.

The Mexican government has set up a number of protected sanctuaries within a biosphere reserve to ensure that the important habitats required by the Monarch Butterflies are protected and preserved, while still allowing visitors to witness these remarkable insects amidst some of Mexico's most breath-taking landscapes.

Alcohol Can Help You Speak A Foreign Language More Fluently

Say "bonjour" to your new favorite reason to indulge in a glass of wine.

A small study published last month in the Journal of Psychopharmacology shows that a small amount of alcohol can help people speak a foreign language better. Researchers found that imbibing helped people speak a non-native language more fluently, even when they didn't think they were doing that well.

The study's authors observed 50 native German speakers who were attending a university in the Netherlands, where classes were taught in Dutch. Each person in the study indicated that they drank alcohol on occasion. The participants had also recently passed a Dutch proficiency test.

Each volunteer was asked to engage in a two-minute recorded conversation with an interviewer in Dutch. Half of the volunteers were given alcohol before the chat, and the other half were given water. The amount of alcohol varied depending on the person's body type. (For example, a 150-pound man was given slightly under a pint's worth of beer.)

The conversations were then reviewed by two native Dutch speakers, who weren't told which participants had drunk alcohol and which hadn't. The participants were also asked to rate their own performances.

Those who'd had alcohol didn't rate their performance any better than those who had water, indicating that they didn't necessarily feel more confident in their fluency than the water-drinkers.

However, the native Dutch speakers saw it differently. They ranked the alcohol drinkers as being more fluent in Dutch than those who drank water - specifically, when it came to pronunciation. On metrics like vocabulary and grammar, the native Dutch speakers said, the two groups were comparable.

There are some caveats here. The amount of alcohol is key, for starters. Researchers theorize that drinking too much can have the opposite effect, making proficiency in another language worse due to slurred words. It's also not clear what the participants' stress levels or emotional states were at the time - factors that can help or impede a person's performance. The study's authors note that this experiment should be conducted with other foreign languages to see if the same effect occurs. Still, the researchers concluded that a little liquid courage can help when it comes to fluency.

Don't drink? There are other options

If a little chardonnay isn't your thing, there are certainly other ways to get better at speaking a new language. Give one of these a try:

Prioritize rest.

There's some evidence to suggest that your brain can learn new information while you slumber. This doesn't necessarily mean you can learn Spanish as you drift off, but research has shown that a person's brain can learn and understand new noise patterns even while they're asleep. The results suggest that hitting the hay is vital for brain power, also. It's a start, right?

Get motivated.

Research shows that a person's level of motivation correlates with proficiency success when learning a new language. If you want to become fluent, get serious about it.

Jot down the words you're learning.

Writing during the learning process can help the brain retain new information. Studies show that when students take notes using pen and paper, they're better able to recall the information from memory than when they take notes on a laptop.

Study another subject in the new language.

A study of high school students who were learning French found that when the students also took another class taught in French, the students were more motivated to learn French and tested better for listening skills in the language.

Chocolate's Odyssey

Hernán Cortés was one of the first Europeans to taste xocolatl: the strong, bitter drink taken with prodigious gravitas by the high priests and elite of the Aztec order; they offered it to him believing that he was a god.

But even before then, cacao beans were being fermented and turned into drink by the Olmec, and the Maya who mixed it with vanilla and spices to create a beverage taken during important religious and social ceremonies.

The precise date when humans began consuming cocoa is unclear - recent archaeological evidence suggests that Meso Americans may have been cultivating the cacao plant and using it to make beverages as far back as 1400 B.C. - but historians agree that cocoa was an important substance held in high regard by our ancestors.

Cacao beans were also used as a form of currency; ancient records show that livestock and other goods were traded in exchange for them, and the Aztecs also accepted cacao beans in payment of their taxes, or tributes as they were known.

The Spaniards did not take to the bitterness of the Aztec form of the drink and so mixed it with cane sugar (from Europe) or honey (from Yucatán) to make it more agreeable to their taste. In its sweetened form, the beverage became popular across Spain from the seventeenth century although, like tea leaves in England during the same period, cocoa was expensive and taken almost exclusively by the social elite and well-heeled.

It was not until the mid-nineteenth century that Coenraad Johannes van Houten, a Dutch chemist, worked out a way of creating cocoa in a powder form by removing some of the natural fat and adding alkaline to create a mixture termed as "Dutch cocoa."  A few years later, the Englishman Joseph Fry discovered that a mold-able paste could be produced by mixing melted cocoa butter back into the Dutch cocoa powder-he is thus widely credited with having created the first chocolate bar.

Chocolate became ubiquitous during the twentieth century, although most chocolate products being purveyed were blended with large quantities of sugar and other additives reducing the cocoa content (and cost) of the end product.

'Artisan' chocolate has long been purveyed by specialist chocolatiers across Europe, and this practice is making a strong comeback today in the U.S. in the form of independent chocolate makers offering hand-made pralines created with higher cocoa content and blending the more expensive cacao bean varieties instead of the hardier, less expensive and less flavorful beans often used by mass producers.

Despite having been the 'birthplace' of chocolate, Mexico's cacao production now makes up just a small fraction the world's total. (Africa is the largest producer.) Mexico's cacao trees grow primarily in the Gulf-coast state of Tabasco, where the esteemed plant has been thriving for thousands of years. The state of Chiapas, with its fertile sub-tropical climate, is the second largest region in Mexico where cacao trees grow well.

Even from its low baseline, cacao production in Mexico has fallen by half since the early part of this century, and the Mexican government has been backing some projects in an attempt to revive the country's production of the crop, particularly in the area of organic cacao which holds great favor in current markets and commands a premium price.

Although chocolate confections are widely available in Mexico today (and artisan pralines are a form of luxury here) modern-day Mexicans, like their Aztec ancestors, still prefer to take their chocolate as a liquid beverage, albeit with a European twist: by far the most popular method is melting tablets of cocoa mixed with sugar and cinnamon into hot water or milk, and whipping the drink into a froth using a special wooden utensil called a molinillo, which aerates the mixture.  According to Mexican folklore, the "spirit" of this mystical drink resides in the foam.

Champurrado - A Mexican Thick Hot Chocolate

Chocolate has been called the "drink of the Gods", and the Mexican History books will narrate how it was given to the soldiers to give strength, and how it was a drink reserved for the priests and the wealthy. Even Hernán Cortés wrote to King Carlos I of Spain telling him that he had found a "drink that builds up resistance and fights fatigue."

Today, it still gives resistance and strength to the people that work the land of the cocoa plantations in the Southern part of México. The men and women go to work very early in the morning, carrying with them a full canteen of "pozol."  A drink made of water, corn dough, and ground cocoa beans. Pozol helps to sustain them in their hard work until the midday hour when the high temperatures will reach 90 degrees in the jungle-like area of southeast México.

Pozol is a drink is for the summer.  Since winter is on the way, it calls for a hot drink to nourish and keep our body warm. Champurrado, similar to pozol, is a hot thick drink also made of corn dough and chocolate.  There are several variations of Champurrado.  Some add water, milk, or both. Some even add star anise for extra flavor.

Here is one favorite recipe for you to try and enjoy in these cold days.

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of milk
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 thick stick of Mexican Cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 (3 1/2 oz.)Tablet Mexican Chocolate like Taza
  • 6 oz. Piloncillo or organic whole cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup of corn flour

Method:

  1. In a medium size pot, simmer the milk along with the piloncillo, cinnamon and chocolate until it dissolves. This will take about 6-8 minutes.
  2. Mix the corn flour with the 2 cups of water until all the lumps have dissolved. If needed, use a strainer to get a fine mixture.
  3. Add the corn flour mixture to the pot and stir. Keep simmering at low heat and keep stirring for about 8-10 more minutes until the chocolate has a light gravy consistency.

Serve and enjoy!

Since this is a slightly thick drink it is hotter that you may think, be careful while serving and drinking.

NOTES:

* The Champurrado's consistency is like that of a light gravy. If you want a lighter version, reduce the amount of corn flour to 1/3 cup.

* If fresh corn masa is available in your area use 1 cup of masa instead of the corn flour.

* Piloncillo or Panela is unrefined whole cane sugar.

When buying Piloncillo or Panela, make sure it is pure. Some stores carry a look alike version that is just regular sugar in the form of a cone and doesn't have the flavor or nutrients of Piloncillo.

* To easily cut the piloncillo, warm the piloncillo first.  This will soften the piloncillo.

Speaking with the Right Accent

Thanks to modern technology, there's no longer any need to learn how to put accents on Spanish words. Instead of bothering with complicated, picky rules, just announce firstly and loudly that the keyboard on your smart phone "doesn't do accents": contemporaries will take this as a perfectly acceptable euphemism for "you don't do accents," - and will say no more about it.

There could, of course, be the old fogeys and purists who may mutter something about the state of education these days, and with these in mind, here are some simple rules for the use of accents in Spanish.

Most Spanish accents are to indicate which syllable should be stressed in pronouncing a word. When the pronunciation deviates from the natural spoken stress, the syllable to be stressed is accented.

There are only two rules for natural stress:

If a word ends in a vowel, n, or s, the natural spoken stress goes on the second from last syllable: camino (path or road), libros (books), entienden (they understand)

If a word ends in a consonant other than n or s, the spoken stress falls on the last syllable: español (Spanish), cerrar (to close), ciudad (city).

Words that don't follow these two rules have a written accent on the stressed syllable: habló (he/she spoke), rápido (fast), cajón (drawer), inglés (English); and in the case of words ending in a consonant other than n or s: lápiz (pencil), árbol (tree).

As a consequence of these two rules, any words stressed on the third from last syllable or an even earlier syllable have a written accent: cámara (camera), teléfono (telephone), rápidamente (quickly).

There are also some other reasons for using accents. One is to differentiate when the same word has several meanings. The most common are el (the, masc.) and él (he/him); mas (but) and más (more); tu (your) and (you), solo (alone) and sólo (only).

Words such as qué (what), cuándo (when), cómo (how), dónde (where), quién (who), cuánto (how much) take an accent when used to form a question or an exclamation: ¿cuánto cuesta? (how much does it cost?), ¿dónde vives? (where do you live?), ¡qué diversión! (what fun!). But, háblame cuando llegas (call me when your arrive) and ella no es como tú (she's not like you), don't take accents on those words.

Another use of accents is used to split up weak vowels (i, u) from strong vowels (a, e, o) to make a separate syllable. When two strong vowels follow one another, each vowel is a separate syllable. Caoba (mahogany) pronounced "cah-oh'-bah." When a weak vowel is next to a strong vowel, they form a single syllable, with the strong vowel pronounced:

bai-lar (dance), cau-ti-vo (captive). To separate a weak vowel into its own syllable, it takes an accent: día (day) is pronounced "dee'-ah", or púa (barb) "poo'ah"
