BEACHFRONT
LIVE WEATHER STATION

BEACHFRONT

Welcome to May. This is one of the most beautiful months of the entire year in Rocky Point. The frequently breezy months of March and some of April are gone and by this month the weather has warmed up nicely and the water is just right for swimming again. June is nice too and then in July, we start getting a bit more hot and humid. Still great all Summer, but this is definitely a good time to visit for the ideal weather.

April has come and gone without movement on the Home Port. Despite the plans to begin again last month, it seems that they hit a snag and things are, again, delayed for a little longer. For myself, I won't be relaying any more "for sure" start dates in the future. It seems that when we see the bulldozers moving again, that's when we'll be 100% certain that it's going to start. Don't get me wrong, I still believe that it's going to happen. It is just going to happen on Mexican time, just like so many things in the past. Do you remember the airport, coastal highway and convention center? All finished, but not without some issues and delays. In any case, there are some new developments to report and you can read about them below.

The Sonoran Sky is the place to be for Mother's Day as Cielito Lindo Fine Mexican Cuisine is having a special breakfast that your Mom will love. Or, if you are the Mom, then you can love it for yourself. The bout between Golovvkin and Martirosyan will be shown live at La Cantina Sports Bar that evening right next door, and they are offering a sampler plate and free shot of tequila for those who would like to partake. The Ocean Blue Spa at the Sky is under new management and offering some very nice specials for all the Moms out there as well. And, of course, the beachfront Tiki Bar is everyone's favorite and the best place on the beach to enjoy the day and have a cold one in total comfort. All of these great Sonoran Sky Resort businesses are open to the public. It's not too late to rent a luxury condo for the weekend. Contact Casago.com for reservations.

Once again, I would like to mention our upcoming Las Vegas Night for Charity in hopes that you put it on your calendar to attend. Better get used to it because I will be pushing it for the next two months. Lots of fun and for a great cause. And, we always have over 100 great prized which have been donated by local businesses and clients. You will have lots of chances and ways to win. This year it looks like we are going to be in need of a few additional dealers. No experience necessary and training will be provided prior to the event. Please let me know if you're interested. Oh, and you are certainly more than welcome to donate prizes too :)

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for about 10 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Las Vegas Night for Charity 2018 Coming July 7th.

For the seventh year in a row, the Sonoran Resorts will host a Las Vegas style night of fun gambling, great food, fabulous prizes, and lots of excitement for all. Please start making plans to attend. This event will be on Saturday the 7th of July, which will be the big 4th of July holiday weekend (since it lands on Wednesday this year), so you should have plenty of time to spend a few days in our beautiful paradise and come enjoy the festivities that evening.

Every year, many Puerto Peñasco residents and loyal visitors plan to attend this annual Las Vegas Night for Charity, and even brush up on their Black Jack and Poker skills ahead of time. It is not too early to make reservations at the Sonoran Sky Resort as the condos always fill up to capacity for that weekend.

Prizes for the event are already beginning to arrive, and we remind you that if you're a local business, donating a prize for Las Vegas Night is an excellent way to keep community charity flowing while getting some loyal exposure for your enterprise as well. Just call Jim Ringquist, Sales Director for Sonoran Resorts, and let him know you'd like to donate a prize. He'll send someone out to pick it up right away. It's that easy! Call Jim at the sales office (from Mexico): 638-382-8187; or from the U.S.:602-476-7511. His email is:  [email protected].

Las Vegas Night for Charity wouldn't be one of the largest fundraisers of the year if it weren't for the staff and friends of Sonoran Resorts who volunteer their time to make the evening flow smoothly. You can help also, if you've ever had an urge to be a dealer in Las Vegas - even for a night - this is your chance to try that fantasy. No experience is necessary; you'll be trained by one of our experienced volunteers. Again, just let Jim know of your interest and he'll let you know when we will meet.

The fun night begins at 7:00PM and your $50 dollar ticket will include the full dinner buffet, $300 dollars in "Charity Chips" and a raffle ticket good for the drawings held throughout the night. You can always purchase more chips and raffle tickets - with all the money going to charity!

Las Vegas Night for Charity is more than just fun and games (and there's a lot of that!), it has become an evening of memorable camaraderie and meeting new friends, all within the luxuriously appointed décor and air conditioning of Los Volcanes Ballroom on the second floor of the Sonoran Sky Resort Beachfront Luxury Condominiums.

Where else can you have so much fun, helping so many, for such a small investment? And, the chances are very good that you will go home with some super nice prizes too. Plan to join your friends on July 7th at Las Vegas Night  for Charity!

The Swift Air Travel flights will operate twice a week between Mesa Gateway and Mar de Cortés Airports via a Boeing 737 commercial plane, with seating available for up to 150 people.

Rocky Point Port Could Be Completed In Public-Private Partnership

Officials in the State of Sonora have long lobbied Mexico's federal government for funding to build a port for cruise ships just 60 miles south of the Arizona border, and now they're considering turning to the private sector to help complete the project.

Sonora Gov. Claudia Pavlovich has been approached by at least one Mexican cruise ship company interested in partnering with the government to complete construction of the home part at Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, said Jorge Valdes, head of the city's economic development office.

Officials overseeing the project expect to receive about $12 million from the federal government this spring to continue construction this year, Valdes said. It's estimated at least $32 million more would be needed to complete the port, which would be about two-thirds of a mile long, by 2020. Any public-private partnership would have to be approved by the federal Secretariat of Communications and Transportation.

"If that happens, the money will flow easier, and maybe we can anticipate an earlier completion," Valdes said.

Puerto Peñasco is about 200 miles southwest of Phoenix and Tucson, and Gov. Doug Ducey has signed a memorandum of understanding showing support for the project and referring to it as the "Port of Arizona."

Sonora officials have said the government has spent more than $40 million and that construction is more than 50 percent complete. Several cruise companies have shown interest in sailing from Puerto Peñasco for a cruise along the Sea of Cortes, seeking to attract tourists traveling from Arizona and the Mountain Southwest.

Rocky Point May be Getting Cruise Ships in 2020

In 2 years, the first Sea of Cortez cruise route will begin in Puerto Peñasco. Officials from Cruise & Maritime Voyages, part of the Global Maritime Group, (https://www.cruiseandmaritime.com/) made the announcement accompanied by Rocky Point Mayor Ernesto 'Kiko' Munro.

Accompanied by Nicholas Tragakes, CEO of Clobal Maritime Group, and other company officials, the Mayor stated that Puerto Peñasco would be the port of origin, and final destination, i.e. A Home Port.

He explained that Cruise & Maritime Voyages currently intends to provide tourist services in 2019 in the holiday destinations of Acapulco, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Luca; while in 2020 it will tentatively expand its cruise route in the Sea of Cortez in the cities of Topolobampo, Guaymas, Santa Rosalia, Loreto, La Paz, and the destination of Puerto Peasco.

For his part, Nicholas Tragakes, Global Maritime Group CEO, thanked Mayor Kiko Munro for the interest shown and facilities available to expand maritime connectivity, and cruise routes with Cruise Maritime Voyages.

"Puerto Peñasco is located in a privileged place and we are interested in having maritime connectivity," said the CEO of the Global Maritime Group. "The new cruise route is attractive due to the proximity to the United States border, since it has air and land connectivity that is very important for us."

Nicholas Tragakes acknowledged that Cruise & Maritime Voyages currently works on other international routes in Europe, Asia, America, and now in Mexico with the Pacific route and soon in the Sea of Cortez.
New Movie Theater and Shopping Center Coming Soon

With an investment of 50 million pesos, the complex called ¨Real Center Puerto Peñasco¨ will be built, consisting of the construction of a shopping plaza whose main anchor will be the installation of a Cinepolis Theater, announced businessman Miguel Guevara Askar in the company of city mayor Ernesto ¨Kiko¨ Munro.

The Municipal President accompanied by Lic. Jorge Valdes Felix, Coordinator of Economic Development, explained that the economic reactivation in Puerto Peñasco continues with this and other business and real estate projects.

For his part, the renowned entrepreneur reported that the construction of the complex will be built on an area of 8.500 square meters where the Mexican cinema chain Cinepolis will be installed with 5 rooms with 750 seats, providing work for around 50 people.

In addition to the installation of Cinepolis, commercial premises will be built and several national and local companies will be invited to settle in the ¨Real Center Puerto Peñasco¨ complex, which will be located on Blvd. Benito Juarez in front of Sam's Club .

He said that the preparations for the construction of the complex will begin in the next 60 days to be ready to open in the first quarter of the year 2019.
Puerto Peñasco Convention Bureau Welcomes Tour Operators

The Free Spirit Vacation Company, Puerto Peñasco Visitors and Convention Bureau (OCV Peñasco), and Hotel Peñasco del Sol hosted a fruitful visit for 29 different tourism operators from Arizona, California, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Oregon, among other states, from April 4 through April 6.

Principal questions addressed during the visit included the border crossing at Sonoyta and Lukeville, the new Safety Corridor between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco, the Home Port project, flights in and out of Peñasco, and the variety of activities available for tourists.
During their visit to Puerto Peñasco, the tourism operators enjoyed local cuisine, a spectacular sunset following a boat ride to San Jorge "Bird" Island, and even a trip to the Schuk Toak Visitors Center at the El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve, where the magical and imposing desert impressed them.

In further promoting tourism to the area, following the "fam trip" of tourism operators to Puerto Peñasco, OCV Director Lizette Ibarra along with OCV Assistant Fernanda Ortíz attended the "Spotlight" tourism conference in Tucson, AZ from April 7th to April 10th.  The four-day event, organized by the Free Spirit Vacation company, welcomed 46 different tour operators from across the United States and Canada who are interested in bringing tourist groups to the southern U.S. states, as well as to the neighboring state of Sonora.

Giving Families in Poverty the Opportunity to Earn a House by Serving Their Community

You're driving south on Carretera Sonoyta, approaching Rocky Point. About 20 minutes before you reach the Sonoran Resorts on Sandy Beach, you pass a property on the left hand side of the road. It has a low, white wall facing the highway and a sign that says 1MISSION.

You've probably seen it. And you've probably wondered, "What is 1MISSION, anyway?"

We're glad you asked. 1MISSION is a community development organization giving people in poverty the opportunity to earn a house by serving their community. That's a mouthful, we know, so let's break it down.

By "community development," we mean that we seek to impact the entire community. Unlike some charitable models that focus on handouts of food, medicine, or housing that never get to the root of the problem, community development is all about empowering local communities to change their own situations through partnerships of accountability, trust, and yes, generosity. Community development is more complicated than other kinds of charity. It's not always as flashy. But it has the power to be truly transformative over the long term, which is why we believe in it.

When we say our work is connected to people in poverty, we're talking specifically about families in Rocky Point and elsewhere in Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua who struggle to make ends meet. One way poverty manifests itself is in a lack of affordable housing. Did you know that 1.6 billion people around the world - more than 1 in 5 of us - lack safe, secure shelter?

That's why we use housing as the catalyst to fight poverty. While housing is only one solution to the problem, it's a crucial one. Studies have shown that when families in poverty gain title to their land and a house to live in, it unlocks dead capital - creating all kinds of economic opportunity, fundamentally shifting their outlook on the future. Likewise, families in houses with weatherproof roofs and solid floors are less susceptible to disease. And, of course, living in a house with a door that locks prevents instances of theft and violence that could otherwise ruin a family.

But again, housing alone isn't some magic solution to poverty. That's why house recipients spend 200 or more hours serving in their communities, on initiatives chosen by local leaders, to solve problems they have identified. Some plant community gardens that yield harvests of fresh vegetables. Some earn their GED certificates, opening up new employment opportunities. Some take sewing classes, learning a skill that can grow into a career. Meanwhile, families pitch in and help to build each other's houses when the time comes. All of these initiatives strengthen local communities and bring neighbors closer together as allies in a common cause - making their neighborhood a better place for everyone.

That, in a nutshell, is what we mean when we say we give people in poverty the opportunity to earn a house by serving their community. And for ten years, we've seen this model transform lives - and entire neighborhoods - right here in Rocky Point.

So, where do you fit into all of this? Well, there are several ways you can be involved. Nearly every weekend, we have teams of visitors to Mexico staying at our base camp - yes, that's the property you've seen along the highway on your drive into town - while working alongside local community members, building houses. Throughout last year, in fact, we had over 3,600 people stay at base camp, which averages out to 300 each weekend! If you're interested in being part of a build trip, you can learn more here: 1MISSION.org/mission-trips.

If you run a business here in Rocky Point (or elsewhere!) and want to explore corporate partnership opportunities, we'd love to have a conversation with you. Please send a note to [email protected] and we'll be in touch.

Finally, the work we do wouldn't be possible without the faithful support of donors. Supplies like doors, windows, and bags of concrete are essential for the construction of any house. But the house is just the beginning for families in poverty. A great way to support these families is to join the Supply Yard, a community of people dedicated to providing more than a house every month. And best of all, 100% of your monthly gift goes to projects and programs in the field. Sign up and give now at 1MISSION.org.

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

City Honors Distinguished Citizens by Naming Streets After Them

Mayor Kiko Munro led a tribute in recognition of 37 distinguished local citizens for their legacy and history in Puerto Penasco by naming streets after them. Among the recognized people are fishermen, teachers, athletes, merchants, municipal ex-presidents, and founders of families of great tradition. In the photos shown above, Alejandro Portugal of Portugal Insurance receives the honor.

Complete Refurbishment of Wells Continues in Puerto Peñasco

OOMAPAS Administrative Director Jorge Pivac Carrillo informed the local community the water department has been working on complete refurbishment of wells 10 and 4 since March, and is now ready to begin work on wells 1 and 2. A recent investment of 5.2 million pesos went to drilling, equipping, and interconnection of well 4, which will improve extraction and water supply to the city.

Jorge Pivac also took the opportunity to report the new 14.5 km aqueduct, in which they are investing more than 36 million pesos, now presents a 35% advancement.

Pivac stated, "Consumers can be confident in counting on having clean water this summer. A clear example of this is the improvement in water supply during Spring and Easter breaks."

Charity Charange is a Huge Success

The third annual Charanga Derby was a huge success and raised much needed funds to benefit Jose Davalos Valdivia, home for the elderly. The event, conceived and organized by Santiago Ruis, director of the facility was the best yet consting of 36 cars put together by teams of 5 members each. The creativity and ingenuity was something to behold as all manner of crazy vehicles raced down the hill, vying for the glory of victory.

The event took place on Calle Campeche, downhill in the El Mirador neighborhood. Starting with a fun presentation of the cars and team members both locally and from nearby towns of Caborca and Sonoyta. Santiago Ruiz said he felt satisfied and happy with the event, already beginning thought and preparation for next years event in an effort to make it even bigger and better than this year.

Police officers help in cleaning and painting program for schools

Local Police Chief Marco Alejandro Preciado Valenzuela detailed the Office of Public Safety has launched a campaign to help with cleaning, tree trimming, graffiti removal, and painting of walls, as well as improvement of handicapped accessibility ramps at public schools. To fulfill these goals, the Public Safety Office has received support from several organizations, including: D.A.R.E., Youth Patrol, Auxiliary Units, parents, as well as the State Police.

Chief Preciado made clear the main purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining local schools in good shape. During visits to local schools, officers also share stories and talk to students, teachers, and administrative staff about preventive practices, sports, and other positive activities they can do within their schools and in their community.

Record Numbers from Semana Santa and Spring Break

Just as the over 130,000 happy Spring Breakers were leaving Puerto Peñasco, another crowd of visitors was arriving. It is estimated that the Semana Santa crowd this year numbered over 150,000 strong and we made it though once again, mostly unscathed. Of course, there is always a lot of cleanup after the crowds leave, but the economic impact of Semana Santa is estimated at over $165 million pesos, $5 million more than had been expected.

Overhead Walkway Renovation Complete

As you drive down the main Benito Juarez Boulevard in Rocky Point, you will undoubtedly notice the deep blue panels of the overhead crosswalk a the intersection of Calle 13. This is the latest in many upgrades, both cosmetic and infrastructure, made over the past couple years and this is a welcome change compared to the old unsightly bridge. Though I've never crossed on the bridge in all these years, I'm sure that it is just as impressive from up there as it is from down here.

Mayor Kiko Munro Takes Part in Inauguration  of Community Dining Center

Mayor Kiko Munro, accompanied by Pastors Martin & Gloria Medina, thanked Pastor and missionary Steve Kinmoski for working to improve the quality of life of the Peñasco community through construction of a community dining center in the area of Nueva Esperanza.  The new center plans to serve 120 dishes daily to homeless individuals and others in need in this part of the city. Kinmoski detailed this is the second meal center he has opened in Puerto Peñasco, noting the first center currently serves 108 breakfasts daily along with hot and cold meals.
Puerto Penasco Eco Tourism

Eco tourism is one of the trends with the greatest growth in the vacation industry these days. The appreciation, care, and peaceful coexistence with nature has become a priority for many tourists. Unknown to many visitors, Puerto Penasco offers many activities related to ecological tourism, some of which are very unique only to this area of the world.

Rocky Point has been a very popular beach destination for residents on both sides of the International border and frequent visitors arrive regularly from Phoenix, Tucson, many parts of California, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado, along with cities in Mexico such as Mexicali and Tijuana. Besides having great accommodations, beautiful beaches, fresh seafood, and that famous Mexican hospitality, we are right in the middle of the great Altar Desert and very near to the Pinacate Reserve.

The Intercultural Center for Studies of the Desert and Oceans (CEDO) has their headquarters in Puerto Penasco and they offer a multitude of tours and education for the ecology minded tourist. CEDO is a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to learn about the Sea of Cortez, and all types of marine and desert species which are found locally.

Touring the Adahir Bay is a unique experience to the area because its geography allows you to experience three different habitats in the same place. You can tour the estuaries, artesian wells, and salt mines together. The diverse variety of animal species that can be found naturally in this area are something to behold, many of which are currently in danger of extinction. Such diversity has been the cause positioning Adahir Bay within the RAMSAR list of places and why researchers and nature lovers are organizing group tours to learn more about the wetland area. The Convention on Wetlands, called the Ramsar Convention, is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

Another option that exporers will not want to forego is the Biosphere Reserve of Pinacate and Gran Deierto de Altar, a World Heritage Site that had different specialized areas in which to learn more about the ecosystem where it is located. The Shuk Toak Museum, coexisting with nature within the Reserve offers tours and information. Many trails lead to the huge craters, diverse wildlife and terrains, along with camping areas if you should want to make more than a day hike out of the experience.

If you're up for a boat trip, Isla Jorge, also known as Bird Island will thrill ecotourists with a variety of birds, as well as marine species such dolphins and a large sea lion colony. There are several tour companies that will take visitors to the island. The trip is an unforgettable experience and a perfect place to do some snorkeling to explore a small part of the Sea of Cortez - the World's Aquarium.

Puerto Penasco really does have something for everyone.

Mayor Kiko Munro inaugurates 2018 Liga Norte de México Baseball Season

Together with city authorities and Tiburones board members, Mayor Kiko Munro led inauguration ceremonies for the 2018 Liga Norte de Mexico baseball season, in which the Tiburones of Puerto Peñasco faced the Rojos of Caborca in a family friendly environment.

The mayor congratulated the Tiburones Board, headed by Terencio Gutierrez, and took time to recognize and celebrate former players from the Tiburones de Puerto Peñasco who helped bring "glory, championships, and history" to this port. The mayor urged the current Tiburones management to strive for their fifth championship, in continuing to write a new chapter of the team's local history and to the enjoyment of fans. Moments after his speech, the mayor threw the ceremonial first pitch of the game, which ended in a 5 - 3 win for the home team.

This season, the Liga Norte de Mexico is made up of: Algodoneros de San Luis, Indios de Tecate, Freseros de San Quintin, Marineros de Ensenada, Rojos de Caborca, and Tiburones de Peñasco.

Vaquita Porpoise Protected Area Enlarged by Nearly 50%

The endangered species' sanctuary now takes in 1,800 square kilometers

A protected area in the upper Gulf of California has been enlarged by 45% as the latest measure in efforts to protect the endangered vaquita porpoise.

Environment Secretary Rafael Pacchiano Alemán announced yesterday the vaquita sanctuary now takes in an area of 1,841 square kilometers.

The move responds to a request by the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA), which has documented sightings of the small marine mammal outside the limits of the reserve.

The largest concentration of vaquitas has been recorded in the western portion of the upper Gulf, off San Felipe.
The Mexican representative of the Center for Biological Diversity welcomed the news of the expansion, but expressed regret that it had not been done many years ago.

Alejandro Olivera said it was known that the first protected area, established in 2005, did not take in the entire habitat of the vaquita.

And even today it still doesn't, he said.

But in reality, he said, to save the vaquita it is necessary to eliminate all gillnet fishing in the area of its habitat and stop the trafficking in totoaba swim bladders, an expensive delicacy in Asia and a lucrative product for both fishermen and organized crime.

While official estimates indicate that some 30 specimens remain in the wild, the environmental organization Elephant Action League (EAL) reported last month that it believed there were only about a dozen vaquitas left.
Hilton, Marriott Plan to Open 99 New Hotels in Mexico Over Next Two Years

Tourism secretary says Hyatt is also planning new investment in Mexico.

The Hilton and Marriott hotel brands have committed to opening 99 new hotels in Mexico over the next two years, the federal tourism secretary said yesterday after meeting with the companies' CEOs.

Enrique de la Madrid told the newspaper Milenio that he was informed that Hilton would open 44 properties and Marriott would add 55 hotels to its existing portfolio.

Marriott already owns 77 hotels in Mexico under its Courtyard, JW Marriott and The Ritz-Carlton Brands, while Hilton owns 55.

The meetings were held during the World Trade and Tourism Council's Global Summit 2018, which concluded last month in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

De la Madrid didn't specify the exact location of the new projects but explained that there were plans to open hotels in beach areas and medium-sized cities as well as the country's largest cities such as Mexico City and Guadalajara.

The secretary also met with the CEO of Hyatt, who he said committed to an investment of US $700 million in Mexico as part of the company's expansion plans, without revealing any further details.

De la Madrid also made a veiled attack on leading presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has threatened to scrap the new Mexico City International Airport project and make use of an air force base for commercial purposes in addition to the existing airport.

In Buenos Aires the tourism secretary met with the CEO of Dubai's two international airports, Paul Griffiths.
He told Milenio that the latter assured him "it's better to have one large airport than two small ones."

"I like to ask those who know, not those who think they know . . . what is better, one or two airports and as simple as that he told me that one large one is better than two small ones because of the economies of scale, efficiencies, things that some of us have said even though we're not directors of airports," he said.

De la Madrid said the new airport was key to ensuring that Mexico's tourism industry continues to grow, adding that every state in the country has tourism potential. He also said new pueblos mágicos, or magic towns, will be announced in the coming months.

Almost 40 million international tourists came to Mexico last year, likely making Mexico the world's sixth most popular destination.
Farewell Peñasco by Guest Writer, Jack Hecker

Following is a poignant piece by Jack Hecker, a good friend to Puerto Peñasco, and to many expatriots and locals living in our little slice of paradise by the sea. Enjoy....

It was with a heavy heart that I headed the car north toward the border that early September morning. The end of a great run was taking place. At 83 my lack of physical and financial energy was becoming the controlling factor.  I must say again, it was a great run.  One that thirteen years ago I never imagined could happen.

It started with a trip to Rocky Point twelve years ago.  My wife and I, accompanied with our friend, Ross headed to the beach for a good time.  A brief stop in Sonoyta for Ross' Fish Taco snack left the two of us sitting in the car wondering if we were going to be gunned down.  Obviously, we survived that interlude and headed back on the road.  I must admit the drive through a strange town in a foreign country had me somewhat on edge to say the least.  Actually, I was petrified.

We stayed at a hotel on Sandy Beach and the accommodations were a disappointment.  The view of the restaurant attached to the place gave way to beach views, if you stretched your neck around and to a look.  Overall, the trip was mundane and I was not impressed and hesitant to return.  Then a year later things changed for the better.

I hooked up to represent a company that owned a beach house in Las Conchas.  Employees and customers with employees had use of this great place.  I got together with some customers and a company sales guy and the result was the beginning of a nine-year run of Beach House NFL Draft Parties and other pleasant visits.

I remember my first entry into this great spot.  As I came through the front door, I could see through the sliding glass doors to the patio and the beach.  It was magnificent.  I have seen great bodies of water, the great Atlantic from the Florida Keys to the top of Maine.  I've seen the Pacific from Chula Vista to Seattle and spent a grand total of forty-nine days crossing it thanks to the U.S. Army's troop ships.  Not exactly a luxury cruise.  My first reaction was to open the doors, step out, view the beautiful beach and breathe in the wonderful the air from the Sea of Cortes.  That day was the beginning of a love affair.

I learned a lot that weekend, having an experienced guide as our host.  I also learned a great deal after I joined what was once a very useful forum.  It led me to experiment with new places and new enjoyment.  What followed the next nine years made me wish I had done this many years ago.

I found great spots to eat, although I wish I had spent more time visiting the truly Mexican places the locals use.  Great Breakfasts and Bloody Mary's at Max's, and Lucky's Cantina where buy a drink and enjoy a free breakfast fast became a favorite.  Our last mornings were always a stop at Reggie's for a sugar fest with donuts and coffee. Shrimp Taco lunches at Sr. Amigo's was a must every visit.  Dinner was often a highlight.  There was, Pan Y Vino, Fuentes, Don Julio's, Shrimp Cocktail at Wrecked capped off with a fine dining experience at Mare Blu.  Our favorite though, was traditional the first night, a visit to Capone's.  I can't believe our first night in Mexico we would go for a Greek Salad and Pizza, but that was only half the attraction.  The service staff always treated us like old friends, which we became, and of course my friend Pacman, the joke telling bartender.  I always left there with a smile.  Well, almost always, we had our last meal there and bidding adieu to our buddies was a bit sad.

More important than the cuisine was establishing new friendships and learning to love Mexico and the wonderful people there.  My first friend was Daniel from Oceano, whose untimely death in a horrific accident was mostly responsible for the overpass at what I called the Roundabout of Death.  There were a number of Omars, Hugo, who always had a Sol Beer ready for me at what used to be Debbie's, Francisco aka, Frankie aka Pancho, Roberto and the gang from Sonoran Resorts, Joe and Jim to mention a few that this old memory can remember.

There were two special friends that made it possible for me in my small way to help the good folks in need there, Mark and Barb.  I'll never forget my first meeting with Mark and him walking the streets with the big stuffed rabbit I gave him for a little girl.  That led to an amazing friendship and a wonderful opportunity for me to help.  My first venture was to the Casa Esperanza por los Niños and a chance to see the need those kids have.  (I still don't know how that boat got there.)  Those two are into so many things, the Adopt a Classroom, Cetmar scholarships, and precious little David's insurance for his heart operation, bottled water for the barrio in the scorching summer heat just to name a few.

One of the most satisfying endeavors was being able to provide mobility for the disabled by sending truckloads of surplus equipment to make them mobile, no longer disabled, but now inconvenienced. Many thanks to Diane, Rod and Chuck for their help moving this much needed equipment.

I have traveled to many places in this lifetime.  I've been to France, Italy, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, (Where?), Japan, Hong Kong, Formosa, but I've never been anyplace that I enjoyed more than Puerto Penasco, Rocky Point.  The people there were so helpful, tolerant of my lack of language skills and always willing to give a smile in return for a smile.  Try that in NYC for one.

All of that and the beautiful Sea of Cortes.  The moment I saw it, I knew there was something special.  If you have never taken a sunset cruise on it, you have missed something outstanding.  We went on the Senorita Rita this last trip.  It was worth every penny of the cost.  The crew was most hospitable and I must say very generous with the drinks.  The cruise into the setting sun along the Sandy Beach shore was exceptional.  Seeing all that from a different side was terrific.

The thing I enjoyed most about the sea was the serenity.  I rushed to get up in the morning to enjoy the magnificent sunrise.  It was different each day. The sunsets were equally glorious.

If I had a choice of where I would like to finish my days, it would be sitting on the patio watching the day evolve, watching the sunrise, the pelicans diving for their breakfast with the moocher birds floating nearby to grab any leftovers, the porpoises playing and the sunsets.

In the middle of my last night, I was awakened by a sea lion, baying, barking, or whatever it is they do, but I knew he was saying a final goodbye for the Sea of Cortes. When the time comes, I imagine I'll be going elsewhere because I've already been to Heaven.

Farewell, God Bless, and God Speed Peñasco.
Those Irresistible Churros

That crispy, crunchy, tasty delicacy: the churro. Where did it come from and what is so sinfully pleasing about churros that we can't stop at just one? There are many different theories that require you to blow the dust off of the old books, but they are interesting enough to note, at least to marvel in their evolution.

As Far Back as We Can Remember
In the days of the trade-focused, new-world-discovering Portuguese dynasties, the Portuguese and the Chinese were often doing business together. History has it, there was a salty, pastry often served for breakfast in China that peaked the Portuguese's interest.

The Chinese breakfast pastry is called youtiao, or the "oil-fried devil."  Traditionally, the pastry would be served in a set of two to represent Qin Hui and his wife of the Song Dynasty. It is said the two together we responsible for the downfall of the country's respected general.

Journeying Over the Seas
The Portuguese brought this savory snack to the Iberian Peninsula after their journeys. We can thank the Portuguese for their distinct star shape and for replacing the salt with sugar. Once on Iberian soil, along with the new shape and flavor, naturally, a new name would shortly follow. The Spanish lost interest in the Chinese history and simply named it after the churra sheep and their horns which have a similar shape.

The churro became very popular among the shepherds who would travel and live in the mountains and trek through the plains from village to village. Buying or trading fresh food was often not an option for shepherds who worked the land, therefore, they were left to their own devices. The Chinese treat was their inspiration when mixing flour, water, and oil over an open campfire. The first churros were as large as a breadstick and eaten plain or rolled in cinnamon and sugar. Fortunately, as shepherds would pass through towns the local townspeople all over the lands quickly discovered the joy of churros.

Conquering the World
Thanks to the Conquistadors who traveled to new lands and spread their languages, religions, and customs through the world, the churro found its way to Latin America. As the churro continued to cross land and sea heading to new places, it would again go through changes. Many Latin American countries prefer a larger, more robust version of the churro allowing for delicious fillings to be squeezed inside. In Cuba, you will find churros with fruit fillings such as guava. In Brazil, one of the most common fillings is doce de leite followed by chocolate. Countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Mexico like dulce de leche as do their Brazilian neighbors but would also gladly choose chocolate and vanilla. Columbia and Venezuela add a fun twist with an arequipe or sweetened condensed milk glaze. Uruguay takes it back to the roots offering savory versions with melted cheese. The North American favorite tends to be enjoyed at theme parks and rolled in cinnamon and sugar.

Back on the Iberian Peninsula, the churro has gone through a further evolution as well. From east to west and north to south, the Spanish are adapting churros to their liking. In the north of Spain, it is typical to find a thicker version, considered to be better for dipping, called a porra. In the southeastern parts of Andalucía, the dough is thinner making it more difficult to form the iconic start shape. The Andalucíans prefer the smoother surface and hesitate to sprinkle sugar on top.

Today's Churro
In Spain and Latin American countries, you will find churros at churrerias made by a true "Churrero" churro master. The mouth-popping snack can be eaten for breakfast, as a mid-day snack to curb your hunger, and as a late night treat with friends. It is best paired with a cup of coffee, café con leche, hot cocoa or rich, thick dipping chocolate. You can always count on a churreria to be open early or very late, however you want to look at it.

It is common to find churro vendors selling from street carts throughout Latin American, especially in Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia. You never know when you will get a craving for a delightfully sweet and perfectly crunchy churro.
Portugal tends to associate churros with fair food and special occasions. On the other side of the world in Great Britain, meeting up with friends on a weeknight at the local churro spot is becoming the newest trend.

Here's a simple recipe that you can use at home when you crave churros.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 8 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • powedered sugar for dusting
Directions:
  1. In a small saucepan, boil a cup of water with the 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and salt.
  2. Once boiling, add the flour, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. When one ball of dough is formed, remove from heat and let the mixture stand for three minutes.
  3. In a large pot heat the frying oil.
  4. Using a star tip pastry bag, pipe the dough through and into the hot oil. The trick is that the oil must be very hot. The ideal temperature is 350F.
  5. Fry the churros until golden, for approximately 10 minutes. Remove them and drain on paper towels for 2 to 5 minutes.
  6. Shower with powdered sugar to taste, and enjoy
Seven Sins Expressed in Spanish

In a day and age when the seven deadly sins are fully operative at home and abroad, it makes sense to include them in the language syllabus. Los siete pecados capitales, as they're called in Spanish, crop up every now and again in conversation, even if not necessarily as part of a discussion on piety.

Pride. Of several words in Spanish that can be used to mean pride, orgullo is the most common and the most versatile, and it can have both positive and negative connotations. Orgulloso can apply to people who take pride in their work or in their children's achievements, but also to describe those who are somewhat aloof.

Soberbia is synonymous with orgullo but usually denotes a greater degree of arrogance. Someone who is soberbio looks down haughtily on others and lets them know it both by actions and attitude. One catch: soberbio can also mean superb, for example in sports when referring to a great goal or some other skillful play. Un gol soberbio, or una jugada soberbia.

Another Spanish expression for pride is amor propio, literally self-love, which can be used when someone's pride is hurt and they feel offended. It can also mean self-esteem (as can autoestima), vanity or conceit.

Lust. This one is fairly straightforward: lujuria. The adjectival form is lujurioso, and synonyms include libertino and lascivo. Spanish, like other languages, didn't get the memo about gender equality, and expressions referring to the lustful have a habit of excusing as a peccadillo in men what is often roundly condemned in women. So mujeriego - philanderer or womanizer - has no direct feminine equivalent. Well, maybe promiscua. And even viejo rabo verde - old lecher - sounds somehow less offensive in Spanish. (Note plural: los viejos rabo verde.)

Gluttony. Gula in Spanish. Glutton, someone who eats or drinks excessively, is glotón. The word tragón, from tragar which means to swallow, is far more usual in Mexico, although it is often used in a playful way, such as when a friend decides to go for just one more taco de carnitas. Someone may also say they ate an extra dessert " por gula," -out of gluttony- perhaps just to try another flavor. " Por antojo" -out of whim or fancy- is a nicer way of putting it.

Anger or wrath. This is ira in Spanish, and the adjectival form is iracundo. Cólera is a synonym for anger or fury, with its adjective colérico, meaning short-tempered. In Mexico, coraje is commonly used to mean anger, which is generally given as its second meaning, the first being courage. (Here people more frequently use valor to mean courage.)   Hizo un coraje means he or she "flew into a rage," or "threw a tantrum." Someone who is in the habit of getting angry can be said to be corajudo.

Enojo is more akin to annoyance, and enojado means cross or annoyed. Enojón or enojona is closer to grouchy than irate or wrathful.

Envy. Envidia is a very common word in a country where material inequality is great and widespread. But "the sin of the have-nots against the haves," strangely enough, seems to be more one of "the haves against the have mores." Envidioso is the adjectival form, and " no seas envidioso" is a common retort to criticism, undue or warranted.

Greed. Codicia is generally used for the desire to amass worldly goods. Avaricia, like avarice, is synonymous with codicia but can also refer to greed in the sense of being stingy.   Avaricioso or avaro means miserly, and avaro is the word for miser ( avaro can be a noun or an adjective). Other common words in Mexico for stingy are tacaño and codo. ( Codo means elbow, and in this context supposedly illustrates the grasping action of the money-grubber.)

Codicia is used for greed when it is applied to covetousness, as in " no codiciarás la casa de tu prójimo" - you shall not covet your neighbor's house. But it doesn't really apply to someone who is greedy for food: see gluttony.

Sloth. Most people leave this one until last. Pereza is the Spanish word for sloth. It also means laziness, although in Mexico flojera and flojo are more commonly used than pereza and perezoso.

An often-heard and impolite alternative for flojera is güeva, itself a sanitized version of hueva-the use of which will get you dirty looks. ¡Qué flojera! can apply to any proposed activity that requires more energy than you wish to expend, or reaction to something that you consider tedious or boring. It could be translated as "what a drag!"

Perezoso also refers to sloth the animal.
