SEMANA SANTA 2019 PUERTO PEÑASCO WAS WILD!
Semana Santa 2019 Puerto Penasco Was Wild!

Puerto Penasco, Mexico with dolphins!
Puerto Penasco, Mexico with Dolphins!

May has arrived and the weather has been perfect. Today is "Labor Day" in Mexico, so government offices, banks, and many businesses are closed in observance of the holiday. Of course, we're still here, hard at it, and the beaches and pool areas seem to be pretty active as well. After a cooler than normal winter, the weather over the past couple months has been great. This is a perfect time to visit, before the heat and humidity set in sometime between late June to mid July. Still fun to visit then but it does get a bit hot and humid outside if you're not in the water. Things start to cool down in mid to late September but many times it's October before the weather gets to the "just right" stage again. We've got it pretty good here. Maybe two months of cool, jacket weather and about 3 months of hot and humid weather. As I see it, that gives us about 7 months of near perfect weather. And, the rest isn't bad either compared to most places around the globe. I mean, who wants a snow storm in late April? No thanks.

May also brings Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day. Both of these holidays are also celebrated in the USA and, in fact, the May 5th celebration is actually celebrated more in the USA than it is in Mexico, even though it is a Mexican holiday - although mostly a regional one primarily celebrated around the Puebla area. And, FYI, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. It is actually the celebration of a victory in the battle of Puebla against the French. Somehow, it has become a reason to celebrate and drink tequila in the USA, much like the Irish holiday, Saint Patrick's Day, has become a very popular party day in the USA.

Everything continues to grow and prosper around town. There are more new businesses opening up all the time, new houses and building going on everywhere, and the local economy seems to be very strong. We are staying busy and it appears that everyone is doing well. The big news story about the border shutdown didn't seem to make any difference and, for what I have heard and seen, things have continued operating normally and without anything being different than before the discussions. If you're going to leave on Sunday at noon after a busy weekend, be prepared for a long wait at the border. If you leave early morning, late afternoon, or during the week, crossing is normally pretty quick and easy. Just as it has been forever. So, don't let the sensational media scare you away from visiting. Life is good at the beach!

One thing that I have noticed lately is a whole bunch of new stop signs around town where there used to be none. Watch for them and be sure to obey the traffic signs and signals. Many of them now have fines posted and, while the fines may sound low compared to a similar infraction in the USA, you still don't want the expense or the hassle of getting pulled over and following the police to the station to pay the fine. Just drive here with the same respect that you drive there and you'll be OK. No fines and no accidents is the best way to enjoy a vacation.

You can help also, if you've ever had an urge to be a dealer in Las Vegas - even for a night - this is your chance to try that fantasy. No experience is necessary; you'll be trained by one of our experienced volunteers. Again, just let Jim know of your interest and he'll let you know when we will meet.

The fun night begins at 7:00pm and your $50 dollar ticket will include the full dinner, $300 dollars in "Charity Chips" and a raffle ticket good for the drawings held throughout the night. You can always purchase more chips and raffle tickets - with all the money going to charity!

Las Vegas Night for Charity is more than just fun and games (and there's a lot of that!), it has become an evening of memorable camaraderie and meeting new friends, all within the luxuriously appointed decor and air conditioning of Los Volcanes Ballroom on the second floor of the Sonoran Sky Resort Beachfront Luxury Condominiums.

Where else can you have so much fun, helping so many, for such a small investment? And, the chances are very good that you will go home with some super nice prizes too. Plan to join your friends on July 6th at Las Vegas Night  for Charity!
CMV Reveals Puerto Peñasco Program on Astoria

Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) has announced the first-ever cruise sailing from Puerto Peñasco - Rocky Point on the 550-guest Astoria.

The exciting news offers travelers an authentic and memorable way to explore the splendid Sea of Cortez with the introduction of its new 12-day soft expedition cruise program that is part of CMV's new "Voyages of Exploration" collection, the company said.

CMV's Treasures of the Sea of Cortez will sail round-trip from Puerto Peñasco to distinctive ports of call in Sonora, Sinaloa, and Baja California Sur including: Puerto Topolobampo, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto, Santa Rosalia, and Guaymas.

The itinerary also offers Arizonians the unique opportunity to embark on a cruise from their closest sailing port, located just a few hours drive from Phoenix and Tucson.

"This is an exciting project that we have been very much looking forward to working together with the Mexican states of Baja California Sur and Sonora and the state of Arizona - the first opportunity to cruise from Puerto Peñasco - Rocky Point! Our new Treasures of the Sea of Cortez voyage takes travelers to discover some of the best kept secret destinations of Mexico from a beautiful seaside town conveniently located just outside Arizona," said John Dennis, VP, Sales and Marketing for CMV USA.

"Additionally, we are pleased to share that with countless local drive-to opportunities, as well as superb airlift into Phoenix and Tuscon, we have already started to see great interest from many markets, including the UK that has non-stop service into Phoenix."

Chris Coates, Group Commercial Director of CMV commented: "The largely undiscovered pristine waters of the Sea of Cortez present the Group's first foray into the soft expedition cruise sector, inaugurating our new 'Voyages of Exploration' collection. In tandem, CMV's Astoria that will perform the program offers a unique, classic boutique style and an authentic cruise experience, supported by an enrichment program and supplemented by classical and more popular themed entertainment. Carrying a compliment of just 500 mainly North American and Mexican guests, and structured as an 'inclusive' sailing brimming with inclusions, further provides for attractive price points and a great value proposition. Our mid-term aim is to introduce a wide array of 'Voyages of Exploration' programs to other parts of the world too."

Structured as an "inclusive" cruise, Treasures of the Sea of Cortez includes the cruise program and accommodations category selected, all shipboard gratuities, immersive and enriching lecture series throughout the cruise and house beer and wine included with lunches and dinner onboard.

The program is available for departures on select dates in December 2019 and in January and February of 2020 with rates starting at $1,599 USD per person.
Mayor Kiko Munro presents IMPLAN for building Peñasco with a future

With the goal of planning, regulating, and managing the territorial framework for settlements and Puerto Peñasco's Municipal Urban Development in the short, medium, and long-term through 2030, Mayor Kiko Munro presented the Municipal Planning Institute (IMPLAN).

Accompanied by First Lady Linda Pivac de Munro, as well as representatives from local architectural and engineering associations, the Director of the Municipal Planning Institute, and the Director of Urban Development, the mayor acknowledged now is the time to take a step forward and have a plan for the city's development, one which transcends administrations and compliance with which is mandatory. He stressed the autonomous IMPLAN has its own board and will be charged with directing Puerto Peñasco's development through 2030.

The mayor emphasized the first drafts of the proposal point to Puerto Peñasco as a uniform, harmonious, sustainable city, one with native vegetation in road medians and parks, connecting the various parts of the city via signage to easily get about, and one with a clear vision of the future and its own style, among other points.

IMPLAN Director, architect Rogelio Valenzuela, explained the plan shall consist of 4 main principals: Sustainable Urban Mobility, Urban Infrastructure, Urban Restoration, and Studies with Regulations.

The Great Rubber Ducky Race is June 9 - THE DUCKIES ARE COMING... RELEASE THE QUACKIN

This is the race that we've all been waiting for. Not an off-road race, a regatta, or even a triathlon. No, it's the annual rubber ducky race. Get ready for excitement and fun while rooting for your duckies (although there is really no way to tell them apart until one of the volunteers looks at the number on the bottom).

The basic premise is that you buy (actually rent) a ducky or duckies and hope they make it to shore sooner than the others. Kind of like horse racing without any stats or studying to do in order to place your wagers. Pretty much all luck.
Of course, all the monies collected will go towards the fantastic Adopt-A-Classroom charity, which helps to supply local schools with the materials and funds needed to function. Some of the schools in town are on a much tighter budget than you can imagine.

Here's a message from Mark and Barb Olszewski, founders of Rocky Point Adopt-A-Classroom Charity:
Thank you so much for supporting our charities in Rocky Point. The Rubber Duckies are now available to purchase for the Great Rubber Ducky Race to benefit Adopt-A-Classroom of Puerto Penasco. We have some great prizes coming up for this event.

Please support Adopt A Classroom this year to help us get our budget for the upcoming school year that begins in August. Also any donations of school supplies are always welcome and can be dropped off at any Sales Office at the Sonoran Resorts, Giuseppi's Espresso in Rocky Point, Latitude 31 Rocky Point, or Rocky Point Times Newspaper.

The Duckies are $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00 you may email me at [email protected] or call Barb O at 602-324-9529 MX Cell 638-114-2406. You can pay for Duckies on PAYPAL or mail a check to Barbara Olszewski PO Box 695, Lukeville , AZ 85341

The Great Rocky Point Rubber Ducky Race will begin from the deck of a ship offshore. Gentle volunteers will be setting all the little Duckies loose while trying not to ruffle any feathers . The boat will depart Port around 8:30ish or as soon as we can wrangle the Ducky wranglers and get them heading out.

DUCKY DUMP Time around 9:30 - 10ish. and will be in front of the Sonoran Spa Resort & Sonoran Sea Resort... We are planning to meet up with beach volunteers at a selected location prior to the Great Rubber Ducky Race. If you want to be one of the BEACH volunteers Please get hold of Barb O.

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Vehicles Stranded After High Tide Overtakes Them

Dozens of vacationers were surprised on the Saturday afternoon of Semana Santa by a rare high tide that quickly left at least 20 vehicles in the water - some more than half submerged - at La Cholla beach in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora.

The vehicles had been parked on the beach several meters away from the water but were flooded by the incoming tide. Beachgoers were left scrambling to rescue their vehicles, along with other belongings.

Hours later the tide finally went out and several motorists were able to successfully drive their vehicles up and away from the beach, while others had to be towed. A video of the incident on social media drew comments from residents that sudden high tides occur frequently and without warning in the area, often rising dramatically in less than an hour.

He encouraged the community to help the fundraising drive by contributing to the Red Cross, as this then helps the institution in being able to respond more immediately to those requiring assistance as well as for the local Red Cross to continue working in optimum conditions.

Munro Palacio stressed the municipal administration's interest to continue preserving the history that has given life and birth to Puerto Peñasco. Among important points addressed were those of restructuring the History foundation, as well as to pursue a possible building loan to house the museum.

Municipal Government Furthers Park Maintenance in Puerto Peñasco

Quevedo Márquez detailed, on instructions of mayor Kiko Munro, maintenance work to restore city parks and plazas has been underway since January. This has entailed welding and painting of benches and goal posts, installation of children's playgrounds, painting of graffiti, new bathrooms, and trash containers.

Early Activity by Stingrays Prompts Red Cross Recommendation for Caution

As temperatures rise, so does the presence of stingrays. This is why it is important to alert beach goers about taking measures to prevent being stung.

Miguel Ángel Ibarra Lomelí, Coordinator of the local Red Cross, reported 16 stingray incidents have already been registered so far this year, which is early as such occurrences usually occur between May and August.

Stingray incidents reported this year haven't been serious injuries, but it is worth noting they are very painful. NOTE: Emergency # in Puerto Peñasco is 911*
University Leaders from Arizona and Mexico Come Together at ASU

Arizona and Sonora have always been neighbors, at least since 1912 technically, but beyond sharing a border the two states have also continuously strengthened their trade and overall commercial relationship. This can be seen in the daily movement of freight, along with the thriving produce trade that's grown in Mexico and pumps life into Arizona's economy. Another relationship builder that is beneficial to both states is higher education, especially as multiple universities continue to build out cohesive programs with each other.

To illustrate that last point, university leaders from Arizona and Sonora came together for a collective symposium to discuss the strong relationship the states have in higher education last week at Arizona State University. The Third Arizona-Mexico Colloquium featured a roundtable of Arizona university presidents hosting the presidents and rectors from Universidad de Sonora, El Colegio de Sonora, El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo, and the Instituto Tecnológico de Sonora.

The colloquium aimed at bringing together ideas and initiatives from the universities' business development and research efforts to strengthen the Arizona-Sonora region. The event also featured a series of academic sessions where faculty and university leaders discussed goals regarding transborder development.

Jessica Pacheco, president of the Arizona Mexico Commission shared her thoughts on the increasingly growing economies and relationship. Pacheco, a keynote speaker, remarked on how Arizona and Mexico are brought together not only by geography but a rich history while also emphasizing our commercial partnerships and interdependencies.

"What is extraordinarily valuable for Arizona, the business community and the border region is the study of the dynamics along the border associated with key policy challenges - water, the movement of people, community health, infrastructure, logistics, energy, agri-business, the list goes on," Pacheco said.

In 2017, two-way trade with Mexico hit nearly $16 billion, which brought 100,000 jobs to our state. This was due to busy ports of entry where systems such as Unified Cargo Processing are streamlining the movement of goods and services through shared ports with an emphasis on safety and efficiency in processing. Fast forward a year and trade increased 7.7 percent to nearly $17 billion as our six points of entry with Mexico saw 737 trains, 400,000 trucks, 13,000 buses, 18 million cars and 25 million people head northbound from Mexico.

Pacheco also described the importance that a solid inter-university system has in building communication and business between Arizona and Sonora.

"Over the past several years the Arizona-Mexico Commission has signed four memorandums of understanding with universities on both sides of the border, largely as a result of the work done at ASU and U of A. And there is more work being done at the community college level also," she said. "Our universities are at the forefront of gathering, analyzing and understanding this data so both public and private sectors can make better decisions. Decisions that help create healthy vibrant communities."

Pacheco described the sharing of intellectual property between the universities as the backbone of our strong partnership and the "basis for a bright regional future in which our people can flourish."

"The idea of being cross-cultural, bi-lingual and well-traveled only enhances our society. We want to encourage international engagement through all the productive pathways we can develop. We want to build a better wider bridge."

Mayor Kiko Munro Invites Nogales Business Leaders to Invest in Puerto Peñasco

During a presentation to promote Peñasco's tourism motto "Peñasco attracts you" in Nogales, Sonora, Mayor Kiko Munro encouraged business leaders to take advantage of the economic growth opportunities and increase in number of visitors to the area over the past four years.

Accompanied by officials from CANACINTRA, as well as the Sonoran Tourism Promotion Commission, and Nogales Development Director on behalf of Nogales mayor Jesús Antonio Pujol Irastorza, mayor Munro affirmed an air of growth can be felt, and no one can halt Peñasco.

Mayor Munro explained Puerto Peñasco has become the top destination in northwestern Mexico, and as it is truly Arizona's destination, "we now want Peñasco to be Nogales' beach." He added, "The prestigious Forbes magazine recently included Puerto Peñasco among the top ten destinations for Spring Break."

During his time as mayor, he noted, tourism to Puerto Peñasco now reports 2.5 million visitors yearly, 7 new tourism complexes have been built, and the city is host to over 20 artistic and business events each year.

Joined by Virginia L. Staab, U.S. General Consul in Nogales, mayor Munro expressed appreciation to public servants from the U.S. and the Arizona Congress, pointing to the unprecedented measure to open a Puerto Peñasco-Arizona Liaison office. He also lauded the U.S. Virtual Consulate services offered each month.

Another indicator of economic recovery, he stated, was that in 2018 the Mexican Association of Professional Realtors (AMPI) reported a volume of 72 million dollars in sales.

The mayor made assurances that Puerto Peñasco is the safest destination in Sonora, noting the implementation of a strategic safety plan which has seen the creation of a Tourism Police and an alliance with Arizona in developing a safe tourism corridor.

Yet another attraction for visitors and investors, furthered the mayor, is Puerto Peñasco's Sustainable Clean-Beach certification, which is the only such one in Sonora in addition to being the largest in Mexico to have such distinction. Further strengthening this point is the upcoming launch of Cruise Maritime Voyages from Puerto Peñasco on December 7th, which will visit various sites throughout the Sea of Cortez.

The mayor's visit was complemented with the presence of members from the Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV) who set up a promotional stand together with Hotel Peñasco del Soil and Iberdrola Realty.

During a press conference as part of the promotional tour "Peñasco attracts you" in Nogales, Sonora, Mayor Kiko Munro announced the "Vive el Mar de Cortes" contest wherein participants could win 3 double passes on the Astoria cruise ship, which will begin voyages from Puerto Peñasco in December of this year.

The cruise, which will begin and end in Puerto Peñasco, will travel through the Sea of Cortez stopping at Topolobampo, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto, and Santa Rosalía, among other points.

Information and further details on the cruise contest will be available after May 6th, which will include a series of questions related to the Sea of Cortez and its ports.
How Much Should You Earn in Mexico to Belong to the Middle or Upper Class?

The OECD defines the middle class as people who receive income between 75% and 200% of the median national income.

While the size of Mexico's middle class has remained relatively stable, it is much smaller than the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) average.

In the report "Under pressure: the reduction of the middle class", the OECD reports that on average 61% of the population in the international organization is in this income group, while in Mexico it is 45%.

He notes that in most of the OECD countries, the middle class has been reduced because, for younger generations, it is increasingly difficult to reach the middle class, defined as income between 75% and 200% of income medium national.

But how much should be earned in Mexico to be able to belong to the middle class?

The OECD presented the calculator Do you belong to the middle class? where you must enter the country, number of family members and income (in national currency).

In Mexico, the average monthly income of a two-person household is 7,128 pesos, so if it has income between 5,346 and 14,256 pesos, it belongs to the middle class (according to the institution's methodology).

Having income equal to or greater than 14,257 pesos would place you in the class with the highest income in the country, to which 19% of the population belongs.

In the report, the institution noted that while almost 70% of those born in the post-war generation (the Baby Boomers, 1942-1964) were part of the middle class when they were 20 years old, in Generation X (1965-1982) it dropped to 64%, and only 60% of the millennial generation (the Millennials, 1983-2002) belong to the middle class at present.

In the case of Mexico, the OECD reports that 48% of Baby Boomers were part of the middle class when they were 20 years old, 46% in Generation X and 47% in Millennials, which shows that this income group has been maintained relatively stable.

The OECD study refers to the fact that the Mexican middle class is increasingly highly qualified, with almost 20% of workers with highly qualified average incomes occupying a job.
Minimum Wage to be Set Next Month for Domestic Workers
New wage commission chief says the amount should be 'well balanced'

The federal government will set a minimum wage for domestic workers next month, said National Minimum Wage Commission (Conasami) president Andrés Peñaloza.

Of the more than 2.3 million people who work as domestic employees in Mexico, the commission expects 950,000 will benefit directly from the requirement.

"We cannot ignore that there are 950,000 domestic workers that make less than the minimum wage . . . We are talking about a direct positive impact on the [their] lives . . ."

The commission president suggested that the minimum wage should be a "well-balanced" amount so as not to be so high as to stifle new employment, and at the same time create formal work arrangements that benefit employees.

Suggestions for the minimum wage level range from the current national minimum wage of 102.68 pesos daily (US $5.40) to 300 pesos (US $15.80), proposed by labor unions and other organizations.

"This will be the first step towards settling a historic debt not only with this sector, but with all workers that have lost all purchasing power for decades on end," Peñaloza said, staking out the commission's new position on the issue after years of holding down wage increases.

The commission estimates that of the 1.3 million households that employ domestic workers, 67% pay employees more than seven times the national minimum wage.

"These households are paying 250, 300, 500 or even 700 pesos a day. Even with a set minimum wage, there is no reason that they should not continue to pay that amount; what we want is to promote formalization with a contract."

He added that despite a new labor law recently approved by the Senate that states that domestic employees should not earn less than double the national minimum wage, or 205.38 pesos daily, the final decision on the matter belongs to Conasami according to the constitution.

According to the newspaper El Sol de México, the vast majority of domestic employees are women, more than 98% of whom do not have access to basic health care. Thirty-six percent begin their employment while still minors, and 96% carry out their duties without any formal contract or guarantee of salary or benefits.

Peñaloza was named head of Conasami in December by Labor Secretary Luisa María Alcalde, who said at the time that "change is in the air" for the commission. Peñaloza replaced Basilio González, who had held the post for 27 years.

"We will work together toward a new policy to restore the minimum wage," Alcalde said.

Man Trapped in the Tunnel He Dug to Spy on Ex-Wife

She had left him due to his jealous behavior

Overcome by jealousy, a Sonora man attempted to tunnel under his ex-wife's property to spy on her but his plans went awry - he became stuck in the tunnel.

Police in Puerto Peñasco were called by Griselda Santillán, 58, who said she had been hearing strange noises behind her house during the past week, but had believed they were caused by cats.

But the noises became stranger, prompting Santillán and a neighbor to inspect her yard. They discovered the mouth of a tunnel and several knives and water bottles. Inside was her ex-husband, who had been trapped for some 24 hours and had been calling for help.

Emergency services personnel spent an arduous 45 minutes rescuing César Arnoldo Gómez Gómez, 50, Santillán's husband of 14 years.

She told authorities that she had decided to leave him due to his jealous behavior, and had obtained a restraining order against him.

Gómez was hospitalized and treated for dehydration before being taken into custody for violating the restraining order.

Mexican Food History: A Melding of Cultures

No doubt, about it, Mexican food is one of the most popular foods in the United States. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and quesadillas are just some of the fare that grace many an American table. Mexican recipes are spicy, colorful, and full of flavor. However, what may seem to be quintessential Mexican is not always the case. A little Mexican food history will reveal that things are not always, as they seem.

Case in point: when the Spanish invaded Mexico in 1521, they brought with them many new varieties of livestock including pigs, cows and sheep, the likes of which Mexico had never seen. The Spanish explorer Cortez introduced Mexico to these and other foods such as dairy products, garlic and other spices as well as dairy products like cheese. Mexican food also has strong roots in the ancient Mayan culture.

Although Cortez brought new foods to Mexico, Mexico also showed him a thing or two. He encountered a few new food items as well. He was introduced to peanuts, chocolate, vanilla, beans, avocados, coconuts, corn, squash, and tomatoes. It was a great effort of give and take and these foods have all worked together over then centuries to produce wonderful Mexican dishes.

According to Mexican food history, many of the traditional Mexican foods have roots in other cultures as well as the Mexican culture. For instance, quesadillas, a mainstay in Mexico and considered to be authentic Mexican food actually not only have roots in Mexican traditions, but in Spanish as well. The corn tortilla, thought to be quintessential Mexican, is actually native American.

The cheese, pork, beef, and lettuce that grace so many of our favorite Mexican dishes, including the quesadilla, are Spanish. The hot sauce that is made from chili pepper, though, is indigenous to Mexico. However, it is a little known Mexican food history fact that many of the spices thought to be Mexican are actually Spanish in origin. Black pepper, cinnamon, coriander and oregano are several spices that are often used in Mexican cooking but are not native to the country.

The French are yet another chapter in Mexican food history. Under a brief French occupation in the 1860's, Mexico was introduced to other new foods and cooking methods. This resulted in popular dishes like stuffed chilies in a walnut sauce, known as chiles en nogado. These dishes, French inspired with a strong Mexican flair, have made their way through the various cultures to meld together and create dishes that the world can enjoy.

Perhaps one of the best known influences on Mexican food comes from the Southwest United States, Texas to be exact, called "Tex-Mex." This part of Mexican food history has had a huge impact on not only how Mexican food is prepared and served in the United States, but also how it is perceived. Tex-Mex is a delightful cultural combination of northern Mexico and Southwestern Texas. In fact, it is actually Tex-Mex that is served in many Mexican restaurants today as opposed to authentic Mexican food.

Mexican food history has enjoyed many different cultural influences, making it varied and rich. This variety of cultural adaptations makes Mexico a veritable melting pot of culinary experiences. This has worked in its favor, though, with delicious dishes and are popular and fun - to eat and to create.

Adding just a few Tex-Mex recipes to your list offers a huge addition to Mexican food cooking options.
Here's just one very easy idea:

Tex-Mex Shredded Beef Sandwiches

Spanish Homophones: 5 Common Mix-ups and How to Tackle Them

Most world languages have some pesky homophones-words that sound the same but mean different things.

Some languages do this more than others, of course.

Spanish is a pretty big offender, even mixing up its native speakers with trickier sounds!

As though we needed more obstacles thrown in our path when trying to learn Spanish.

But, c'mon, you're an English speaker.

English is infamous for its homophone usage-their, there and they're, anyone?-so count yourself lucky that you don't have to learn those from scratch.

Why Learn Spanish Homophones?

As big a pain as it is to learn and recognize the homophones, it's a deed that must be done.

Much like mastering gender or the plural in Spanish, it's a step you must take to reach fluency. If you can't learn to recognize homophones in oral communication, you'll be tripped up in conversation time and time again. (Remember to brush up on those listening skills, and stay on top of your false friends!)

Your conversation partner might tire of your confused looks, so it's best you learn to embrace the homophones. With time, you'll learn to focus on contextual clues. But when first starting out, it's important to have a mental list going of the homophones of a language.

And now for the good news: Spanish has far fewer homophones than English. In this respect, it's a really easy language to study.

The phonetics, or sound system, of Spanish is relatively uncomplicated. Each letter is assigned one sound, with only very few exceptions. Compare this with English, where a simple "e" can take on a multitude of different sounds, and Spanish suddenly seems like a piece of cake.

Let's start by identifying the type of Spanish homophones that are out there.
Spanish Homophones:

Common Mix-ups and How to Identify Them

1. The Accents Pitfall

Some words not only sound the same, but are written exactly the same. Well, almost. The Spanish language helps us out by throwing on accent marks where it deems necessary.

Take, for example, el and él. Same exact letters. The only difference is in the symbols. Normally, Spanish accent marks (called tildes, not acentos) are used to show where the stress should fall. In the case of él and el, however, the accent is simply used to differentiate meaning-with the accent, él means 'he," and without the accent, el is the definite article "the."

Another instance of this is de and dé. Again, the accent here doesn't mean "pronounce the e with a little more force." It's simply used to distinguish the two words, since they're spelled and pronounced exactly the same. Without the accent, de is the preposition "of." With the accent, it's the command or subjunctive form of the verb dar, meaning "to give."

2. The B/V Pitfall

If Spanish is completely phonetic, why can't they do away with either the B or the V? It's a question that keeps me up at night but, alas, both B and V make a light b sound. Not quite as forceful as the English b, but with the lips a bit more relaxed (a voiced bilabial fricative, if you want to get technical). Therein lies the reason Spanish speakers have difficulty hearing the difference between "berry" and "very" or "vest" and "best," but I digress.

An example of the B/V pitfall would be hierba (weed) and hierva (he/she boils [water]). Also: iba (I/he/she was going) and IVA, an acronym that stands for "sales tax." See? Not the same meanings at all, but these sounds make it easy to get tripped up if you can't understand the context.

3. The Silent H Pitfall

I mean no disrespect to Spanish here, but its H is useless. The letter is a remnant of Latin, Spanish's predecessor, but it serves no purpose in pronunciation today (except to trip learners up). Therein lies the problem with homophones such as Asia and hacia, the first one being the continent, the second being the preposition "towards." So you can move "hacia Asia," but you should know the difference between the two.

The silent H pitfall doesn't just occur with the vowel a. Some examples with other vowels:

With o we can use the simple example of hola (hello) and ola (wave). These are pronounced exactly the same.

An example with e is echo, the first-person conjugation of echar, a verb which has about 20 meanings but we'll go with "to throw away" here. Then you have hecho, with a silent h, meaning both "fact" and also the participle form of hacer (to do or make).

See what a headache these homophones can be?

4. The Y/LL Pitfall

These sounds are pronounced slightly differently. To the untrained, non-native ear, the difference is hardly discernible. If you travel to Argentina, however, you're in luck. There, the double L is pronounced similarly to the English "sh," so it's clearly distinguishable. Elsewhere, however, the problem of homophones rears its ugly head once again.

Examples:

Arroyo - a small stream or river
Arrollo - the first-person conjugation of arrollar, which means "to run over, to knock down"
Rayar - to draw lines, to scribble
Rallar - to grate (cheese, for example)

5. The C/Z/S pitfall

Here we have not just two but three sounds to look out for. With the C/Z/S pitfall, it's important that we separate Castillian Spanish (from Spain) from the rest of the pack.

In Spain, the S makes an English "S" sound, but the C and the Z make an English "th" sounds. That's what people are talking about when they affectionately (or mockingly) refer to the Spanish "lisp" (the real term is ceceo, said, of course, with two lisped C's). And due to Spanish phonology, C and Z can never appear in the same letter "slot" of a word, so there's really no C/Z/S pitfall in (most parts of) Spain.

In Central and South America, and the Canary Islands of Spain, however, we do see the C/Z/S homophones. The C, Z and S all sound alike - like the English "s" sound. So you can never quite tell if your conversation partner is talking about his house - casa - or hunting, caza. Another example is ciento (one hundred) versus siento (I feel).

Now we've identified the types of Spanish homophones. They may seem tricky, but don't despair. There are ways to tackle them that don't have you bowing down in defeat.

Step #1. Study vocabulary.

It seems like a no-brainer, but if you know that both the words casa and caza exist, you can begin to see which one fits better in context (and I'm willing to bet it's casa 90% of the time).

Step #2. Context is your best friend.

As you begin to get fluent in the language, you'll use contextual clues to fill in vocabulary you're not familiar with. This will also help you to choose which vocabulary makes the most sense. In the beginning, when you're just starting out, you can probably know that people are greeting you with hola, not ola. But if the homophone in question is more complicated, or the two words share the same part of speech - two high-level verbs like rayar and rallar, for instance - context becomes hugely important to ascertaining meaning.

Step #3. Focus on the nuances of the Spanish sound system.

Like I said, to the untrained ear, the above pitfalls make these pairs sound like true homophones. But in reality, certain accents and speakers do pronounce some of the letters slightly differently. Focus on whether you can hear a tiny, minuscule difference between the B and the V. Is one softer than the other? Is one sound produced by using the teeth a bit, and not just both lips?

The nuances of the Spanish sound system also extend to the accents and the geographic areas in which you're learning or speaking Spanish. If you're in Spain, the "lisp" should give you a big clue. If you're in Argentina, no need to fear the Y/LL pitfall. It's good to familiarize yourself with the basic rules of Spanish everywhere, but if you plan on moving to Ecuador, for example, read up on Ecuador's specific accents and sound system.
