BEACHFRONT
LIVE WEATHER STATION

BEACHFRONT

September is here and it's still HOT, but there is now a light at the end of the tunnel. Next month has some of the very best weather all year in Rocky Point. Looks like we're going to make it through another Summer. The kids are back in school and things have mellowed out a little here - for now. We expect a very busy weekend for Labor Day and it looks like Sandy Beach is pretty much sold out for rentals. It will be hot but with a good breeze off the ocean (courtesy of tropical storm Lidia) and the the ability to jump into one of our pools or into the ocean once in awhile to cool off, I don't expect to hear many complaints.

Sales and rentals are both up this year compared to last year and years before. I read in the local news somewhere that we are now back at pre-recession rental occupancy for the year and it looks like it will continue to rise.Sales prices are not to that level yet, but they have been slowly rising, year by year since 2013. That's great news if you are an owner of one of our ocean front condos and have that condo(s) in the rental pool. Sales have remained strong, and the increased rental income certainly doesn't hurt. Prices have pretty much leveled off for the Summer but I do expect them to start creeping up again once the nice weather arrives and inventory continues to shrink. With the exchange rates the way that they are, there really is no better time to visit and to buy.

We are still working on coordinating the donations from our Las Vegas Night for Charity 2017. As mentioned last month, we collected a record amount of donations from the event and we're going to spend every penny on local, worthy causes. We are currently working with three deserving groups: Casa Hogar, home for the elderly, DIF, in paying tuition for good students who do not have the means, and the Tiburnones SOBRE Ruedas, the local wheelchair basketball team, to buy a couple sports wheelchairs that they need. I promise that next month's newsletter will have final information and photos of the donations that so many of you made possible.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for about 10 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Volunteers from Puerto Penasco Red Cross Travel to Houston to Assist in Relief Efforts

Three local Red Cross volunteers left for Houston this week to help as relief workers in the wake of the devastating effects of recent hurricane Harvey and the ongoing rain and flooding. Harvey has caused widespread damage and evacuations in that area of Texas and relief workers are stretched to their limits. Reports are that the situation is not yet improving and flooding continues to cause more desperation and loss of life in the area.

Many thanks to the brave volunteers who have gone to help. They are: Miguel Angel Ibarra Lomeli, Local Relief Coordinator, Luis Castro Careaga, and Pedro Gustavo Arvizu Barajas, all of them experienced emergency workers and first responders who have been trained in First Aid and basic medical emergencies.

Currently, there have been a total of 40 volunteers from the Red Cross Mexico who have traveled to Houston to help, only 5 from the State of Sonora, and three of those five are from Puerto Penasco.

Mexico also, on Tuesday, provided a long list of items which they want to donate designed to help Texas get back on its feet following devastating historic flooding. Carlos Sada, Mexico's undersecretary for North American relations, said this week his country is prepared to offer relief that includes troops, convoys of food and medicine, portable showers and water. "Texas and Mexico share more than half the border," Sada said. "There are families, marriages, businesses that bind our two sides. This is about being good neighbors."

In 2005, Mexico sent 200 troops and 45 military vehicles to Texas to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Their efforts resulted in the distribution of more than 184,000 tons of supplies, as well as hundreds of medical consultations and a reported 170,000 prepared meals. Mexico also sent aid for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and regularly sends a crew of bomberos - considered among the best in the world - to provide aid fighting major wildfires and to help with environmental concerns.

First Lady Linda Pivac de Munro and DIF Municipal Charity Prepare for Gala Black and White Ball

First Lady, Linda Pivac de Munro, president of the City sponsored charity DIF, is proud to announce the upcoming gala, black and white formal dinner dance 2017 to be held on the 30th of September at the Puerto Penasco Municipal Convention Center.

The tradition of the Black and White Ball began forty-one years ago, when the city administration hatched the idea in an effort to raise funds for local charitable needs. Each year, it is up to the administration and the President of DIF Municipal Charity (traditionally the First Lady) to decide whether to plan, organize, promote, and hold the event or not. It is believed that the formal event has been held all but three years from that time until now.

This will be the third annual gala organized and sponsored by the current administration, and this year promises to be even better than the previous two. After much preparation and promotion, the First Lady is confident that the event will be attended by representatives of all three levels of government, Local, State, and Federal, along with a host of other government representatives, business owners, and town dignitaries, as well as local students and many tourists and local residents from the USA and other areas outside of town. Attendance for the evening is expected to surpass 800 people.

The evening will feature live music, performed by "Puerto Luna", a local group from Puerto Peñasco, and also the group "Vertice" from Cd. Obregon, Sonora.  Thirty-two beautiful ambassadors from different areas will also enrich the evening with their presence, and one of them will be crowned as Queen through a process of chance.

The funds raised from the event will continue to support a local scholarship program created by First Lady Pivac de Munro and DIF Charity which assists students with limited resources in continuing their education from High School and beyond, helping eager students reach their Higher Education goals in both local and out of town Universities.

With the proceeds from this event, it is hoped that DIF can reach their current goal of offering scholorships 150 students, an increase from the 83 students that they are currently assisting, as well as continuing to provide a community "dorm style" house in Mexicali for students attending Universities there.

The First Lady warmly thanked everyone involved in making this special evening possible. "Sincerely and wholeheartedly, I am very grateful to all people and companies that have supported us directly and indirectly with the traditional Black and White Dance Dinner, this year and in the previous years", said Sra. Pivac de Munro. "At DIF Municipal Charity, we are betting on education. It is something that we feel very proud to be able to help in order to offer students better opportunities in the future".

Finally, the First Lady gave strong praise to all those who have and will purchase tickets to attend the event, and she emphasized that this formal event is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Tickets are available at the local DIF offices on Sinaloa Street, or email [email protected] to reserve tickets for you and your group. Ticket prices are $55 US per ticket and includes dinner, dancing, a fabulous live musical ensemble, and a night sure to be remembered for many years to come. See you there!

Mexico Vacations that Inspire

Puerto Penasco beaches and the Sea of Cortez are not only great for stress release and relaxation, but they often inspire creativity. Mexican/Phoenix resident and author, Anita Kaltenbaugh, who lived and worked in Puerto Penasco, states she is influenced by the beauty of Mexico's coastlines and the kindness of the people. Puerto Penasco, her second home, is where she escaped to after walking out on Corporate America. For those looking for inspiration she suggests early morning strolls down Sandy Beach.

The beauty of the county of Mexico is what made her base her debut novel, A Deep Thing in Mexico. Specifically, she was inspired by the magical blue waters of the cenotes in the Yucatan. Although Puerto Penasco, the Sea of Cortez and CEDO are all mentioned in the book, the three main settings are Riviera Maya, Maryland (Camp David), and Arizona.

What is a cenote?

The word Cenote is pronounced "say-no-tay." It is a flowing three syllable word, much like the wonder of nature it is.

Cenote's are magical underground caves that exist in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. Deep holes under the earth filled with crystal clear fresh water containing minerals found nowhere else in the world. A beautiful sinkhole. The Maya discovered them centuries ago, calling them "dzonot," translated by the Spaniards to the word "cenote" meaning in Spanish "a deep thing."

The beauty of a cenote is the surreal quality of the iridescent clear blue water. One might think, they discovered a secret waterhole in a fantasy novel or an entrance to another world. That's what happened to Anita when she first discovered cenotes in the Riviera Maya in Mexico. She states, "You can swim, snorkel and dive, and some even have zipline's. Most cenotes are on private land and off limits to tourists. The Mayas believed they held secrets and kept them sacred, treasuring the waters. In discovering them I believe them."

Magic in Mexico? Why not? Mexico's Yucatan peninsula does not have many streams or rivers on the surface. But, underneath this flat land are the three longest underground water systems in the world. Thousands of these fresh underwater caves exist in the Yucatan, some not even mapped as of 2017. Some researchers believe the systems meet up with the Carlsbad Caverns in America.

All of this wonder and beauty led to the story of, A Deep Thing, being born in the Yucatan jungle. The setting of A Deep Thing, will lead you underwater to sacred entrances of the cenotes in the Yucatan and through the woods of Camp David. It is a suspense novel that will take you on a journey. Anita, her husband Darrell and another resident of Puerto Penasco, Ed Brockmeyer dove "Dos Ojos" cenote in Tulum before the completion of the novel. All the cenotes featured in the book, are based on actual mapped caves.

If you want to check out cenotes, watch this YouTube video by GO PRO,  GoPro: "Place of Fear" | Searching The Maya Underworld before you read the suspense novel, A Deep Thing. (View it on your computer, television or the largest screen possible). Even if you're not a diver it will take you through a cenote dive and get you in the mood.

If you've never heard of a cenote, this one's for you.

Take the trip--Join the journey. A Deep Thing, a suspense conspiracy adventure by local author A. K. Smith is available in print and e-book from The Wild Rose Press. Rotary Club Delves into Youth Exchange Program

 By Shandra Keesecker

In encouraging what are certainly international life changing experiences, the local Rotary Club (CR Mar de Peñasco, AC) is pleased to welcome the club's first students as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program. The true exchange nature is further highlighted with the first three students from Puerto Peñasco also setting out on a year-long adventure, as pioneers in establishing the local club's participation in the over 5 decades long global exchange program.

AnaMaida Rivas, local Youth Exchange Officer (YEO) for the Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club, detailed this year three recent graduates from CIMA secondary school are taking part in Rotary Youth Exchange, with one student headed to Germany in coming days, another readying for travel to Brazil, and another who has already begun her exchange year also in Brazil.  Two of these "outbounds" had the opportunity to welcome the new "inbounds" who arrived in Puerto Peñasco on Sunday, August 6 th, following an induction course in Ensenada with the nearly 50 Rotary Exchange students housed across Rotary District 4100 for the 2017-2018 academic year. The "sobrinos" (nieces and nephew) of the local Rotary club include two students from Brazil, and another from Germany. Each of the eager young travelers are excited about starting their Rotary year, during which they will become a true part of their host families, attend school, pursue hobbies (from sports to theater, new foods, and language), take part in activities of the host Rotary Club, and above all share in the richness of cultural exchange.

Rotary Club President Maria Dolores "Loly" Monteverde Sesma emphasized how proud she is of the local club in stepping into the exchange program this year! She added, as this first RYE experience begins, students and families interested in participating in the Rotary Exchange Program in the future are asked to contact the local club as soon as possible as the process for 2018-2019 begins now and initial deadlines for paperwork, etc. are as early as October. The program, sponsored by Rotary Clubs in more than 100 countries, is open to outstanding students (15-18) who are leaders in their schools and communities. Mayor Kiko Munro and Shea Hillenbrand Promote Puerto Peñasco

In promoting the tourist destination of Puerto Peñasco while encouraging a culture of sports, Mayor Kiko Munro together with former Major League Baseball (MLB) player Shea Hillenbrand took part in filming video promotions for the city.

Part of filming took place at the San Rafael Athletic Facility that Hillenbrand, together with support from the administration and civil society, plans to rehabilitate beginning this coming October.

Strategic points in furthering tourism, such as the homeport, connectivity, security, and historic investment in sports infrastructure to benefit residents and visitors alike, were some of the topics addressed by the mayor during the promotional video.

The mayor highlighted his administration has been able to team up with several companies and professional organizations, achieving such feats as construction of the professional skate park through Levi Strauss & Co., and exhibition games by the Mexican Pacific Baseball League (LMB). Recently, he added, the administration had also agreed upon a calendar of activities with the Arizona Diamondbacks, which are set to begin in October with a cheerleading camp along with rehabilitation of the San Rafael baseball field.

The first phase of rehabilitation work at the field is to include installation of synthetic grass, remodeling of bleachers and dug-outs, and fencing the entire field, among other improvements.

Mexican Independence Day is September 16th

In Mexico, September 16th is celebrated as the date of Mexico's Independence from Spain. Late in the eighteenth century, the middle and upper classes in Mexico began to question the structure of their society. Influenced by the revolutions in the United States and France, they too decided they wanted freedom of speech, a representative government, and a restriction of the over bearing power of the Catholic Church. They determined that the only way to reform their society would be to gain independence from the Spanish, whom they felt had oppressed them for over 300 years. ( Cinco de Mayo  or May 5th, is when Mexico won a battle against the French in the city of Puebla, Mexico in 1862.)

In late hours of September 15, 1810, Padre Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest in the town of Dolores, Guanajuato, led his people in rebellion against the Spanish. He rang the church bells, calling the Indians and Mestizos (those of mixed Spanish and Indian blood) to mass. He exhorted them to rebel against the Spaniards with cries of, "¡Viva México!" "¡Viva la independencia!  ("Long live Mexico! Long live our independence!"), which is the now-famous "Grito de Dolores," or cry of Dolores. Hidalgo then ordered the arrest of the town's Spaniard population. With clubs, slings, axes, knives, machetes and intense hatred, the Indians took up his challenge.

The people's army marched to Mexico City, fighting all the way. When they finally reached the capital, they hesitated, and many soldiers deserted. Before the year was over, Father Hidalgo was captured and executed. His army fought on, however, and his "Grito de Dolores" became the battle cry of the war. The bloody fighting raged on until 1821, when Mexico finally succeeded in winning its independence from Spain.

Every year, on September 15th, the Zócalo, or main square in Mexico City is decorated with flags, flowers and lights of green, white, and red. People sell confetti, whistles, horns, paper-machie helmets, and toys in the colors of green, white and red. Street vendors sell all their favorite foods. At 11:00 p.m. the crowd becomes silent, as the president of Mexico steps out on the palace balcony, and rings the historic bell that Father Hidalgo rang to call the people. Then the president gives the Grito de Dolores. He shouts "¡Viva Mexico!" and "¡Viva la independencia!" and the crowd roars the words back at him. Fiestas celebrating independence take place that night and the next day-throughout Mexico. The air is filled with confetti and streamers. The 16th is a fiesta day-full of music, bullfights, rodeos, parades, more fireworks and plenty of dancing, food and drink.

In Puerto Peñasco, preparations begin as early as late August with decorations going up in many parts of the city, traditional banners hung along main streets, colors of the flag adorning City Hall, and a number of parks festively decorated. Of course there are also Mexican flag vendors on almost every corner selling all sizes of flags and colorful pinwheels.

On the evening of September 15th, the traditional celebration will take place outside City Hall. There, one can stroll through dozens of food stands offering Mexican food and drink delights and then enjoy a reenacted "torch" march along Blvd. Benito Juárez as a recreation of the Insurgents Movement of 1810. The insurgents trail winds its way to the balcony of City Hall, where below the crowd of people gather to hear the traditional "Grito de Dolores", after which there is an impressive fireworks display and "Castle Burning."

Puerto Peñasco is an ideal spot to celebrate Mexican Independence Day given the variety of activities it offers. Take advantage of the warmth of the city's beaches, area attractions, and all of the traditional fiestas!

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Sea Turtle Lays 66 Eggs in front of Sonoran Sun Resort

At dawn on Monday, August 28, a sea turtle arrived on the coast of Puerto Peñasco, in front of the Sonoran Sun Resort on Sandy Beach, spawning a total of 66 eggs. Agents from the Tourist Assistance Unit quickly established a perimeter around the area to protect the fragile eggs from curious onlookers.

The nest and eggs were then carefully relocated by the government agency, profepa, in order to move them to a facility where they will be artificially incubated. It is important to remove the eggs in this way to ensure their protection from wildlife preditors, frequent use of that area of the beach from tourists, and from the intense heat of Summer which often overwhelms turtle eggs at this time of year. The odds of the eggs hatching are much higher when they are artificially incubated.

And, finally, when the eggs hatch and, hopefully, there are 66 baby sea turtles ready to swim, they will be returned to the place where they were conceived to be released back into the ocean. I will try to give some advance notice of the date/time of this event as it is a once in a lifetime event that you will want to attend if possible.

Commercial Shrimp Fishing Opens for 2017/2018 Season

The coast of Sonora is very productive in terms of wild and aquacultured shrimp and starting this month, there will be thousands of fisherman attempting to cash in on the tasty protein packed crustacean known as cameron.

Shrimp season almost always starts sometime around the first week of September and will run until April. Essentially 8 months of the year, and the rule for remembering what months are shrimp season is this: any month with the letter "r" in it. Biologist from the government decide when the season starts and when the season ends based on catch and size.

Our shrimp is unique and is commonly known as Blue Shrimp; it's the best in the world and demand is high for this prized commodity from the Sea of Cortez. We're lucky enough to be right here where it is sold as fresh as it gets and at the best price.

Super High Tide at Time of Eclipse Causes Damage in Las Conchas

Due to intense high tides on Monday - eclipse day - August 21st, several seawalls and beachside fixtures in the area of Las Conchas tumbled onto the beach, leaving heavy material damage though no injuries to report.

Luis César García González, Municipal Coordinator for the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT), detailed at least five beach front homes in the area of Las Conchas were severely impacted, specifically in section 9 between lots 4 through 9.

"This time of year has t he highest tides," explained the ZOFEMAT coordinator, "this, coinciding with Monday's eclipse, led to an intense tide surge and the dismantling of seawalls."

García González noted there are no municipal fines, as this pertains to the federal zone, though notices have been sent to owners of the properties so they begin to remove debris as soon as possible (and rebuild as per the case).

Puerto Penasco Traffic Fines Increased

The police have been enforcing traffic laws more strictly and the city has recently raised the fines associated with violations. Long gone are the days of paying a $20US fine for running a stop sign. Fines and penalties are still very low as compared with the same infractions in the USA, but they have gone up here a couple times over the past few years.
Of course, this shouldn't be a worry to anyone who obeys traffic laws as a rule. Drive here as you would in your hometown USA, and you'll be fine. If you should be pulled over, it is always best to follow the officer to the police station where you will pay your fine directly. Do not pay the officer on the scene, even if they encourage you to do so. And, if you pay your fine at the police station within 24 hours, you get 50% off the posted amount.

Despite the efforts of the Mayor and the City, there are still a few "bad apples" out there who may intentionally stop you looking for a "mordida" (bribe). While it may seem intimidating and while it may be easier to just pay them, doing so only perpetuates the practice. In the majority of cases, when you refuse to pay on the spot, the officer will let you go with a warning.

This problem is not nearly as prolific as some would lead you to believe, but it does exist, so please help out and be part of the solution instead of the problem. Always report abuses to City Hall or you can contact the Tourist Assistance Unit Advisory Committee by emailing [email protected]. Include date, time, location, and unit number from the patrol vehicle, if possible.

After Many Challenges Dialysis Center to Open Soon

After several years and surpassing many hurdles, through great effort and many working hours dedicated to the installation of the facilities and equipment necessary for its operation, it is a fact that the unit Puerto Peñasco will open its doors in a couple of weeks to attend and benefit all those who need these special services.

The unit is a management led by Ms Rafaela Félix Bernal, President of the association of integrated community assistance. AC., who, along with her volunteer team, recognized the need for many patients with kidney problems to travel to other cities up to three times a week to receive hemodialysis treatment, causing additional physical and emotional on the affected persons and their families. No details are available yet as to the actual opening date or how people needing the services will be attended. This information should be coming in the very near future.

Free Eye Exams Provided by DIF City Charity

The DIF municipal charity organization in coordination with the Instuto de la Vision in Puerto Penasco have created a program to help the less fortunate in town to diagnose and treat vision problems without cost to the recipients.

Volunteers from both orginazations have already begun giving free vision exams and gifting pairs of glasses to those who needed them. DIF representatives have said that they invite the entire population of Puerto Penasco to take advantage of the program if needed. Contact DIF or Instituto de la Vision to make an appointment for an exam.

Recycling in Rocky Point

Recycling in Rocky Point does not seem to have been a priority for most administrations or for most of the public over the years, but that seems to be changing for the better. Several local HOAs and communities such as the Sonoran Resorts, Las Conchas, and Cholla Bay now have areas to drop off items to be recycled. And there are a few private recycling "centers" scattered around town who will accept scrap metals and aluminum. Most of the private facilities do not accept glass. Most of these centers are hidden in neighborhoods but there are a few that are larger and easier to find.

One of the larger centers can be found on Josefa Dominguez, North of Super Ley Express grocery store. As of this writing, they are open Monday through Friday until 5:00pm and on Saturdays from 8:00 to 1:00. Like many locally owned businesses, they close and lock up for lunch break. The prices paid for the various items that they accept are posted clearly on a sign and they weigh your load and pay you cash on the spot. If it isn't about the money for you, just drop off whatever you can collect, just to do the right thing and promote conservation and recycling throughout town.
Everything recycled will undoubtedly save it from ending up in the dump or discarded out in the desert.

Municipal Administration Strengthens Alliances with Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association

Mayor Kiko Munro met with Kim Sabow, President of the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association, with the goal of creating strategic alliances in promoting tourism and investment while encouraging the development of Puerto Peñasco.

During the meeting, the mayor and Sabow agreed to work in a coordinated manner on topics of tourism, connectivity, and special events, as well as creating opportunities for investment in hotels and restaurants.

"Puerto Peñasco is advancing, and with direction," stated Mayor Kiko Munro, "Promotion of this destination in neighboring Arizona is important in continuing to consolidate the Mega-Region, along with our economy."

Sabow expressed members of the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association are interested in working with Puerto Peñasco in a coordinated manner, in strengthening and promoting this tourist destination.  She acknowledged Puerto Peñasco's tourism and economic potential, highlighting competitive alternatives to keep it at the forefront of strategic alliances within the Sonora Arizona Mega-Region.

Puerto Peñasco to Host Sonora Arizona Commission

Puerto Peñasco will host the upcoming Sonora Arizona Commission, scheduled for Nov. 30th - Dec. 1 st, announced Yamilett Martínez Briseño, International Liaison Director for the State of Sonora.

In meeting with Mayor Kiko Munro and members of the Business Advisory Council, Martínez stated, "We bring news from Natalia Rivera of the Sonora Government Executive Office, of which the Sonora Arizona Commission International Liaison Office is part, that thanks to measures taken by the mayor the decision has been made for Puerto Peñasco to host the upcoming annual commission meeting."

The mayor thanked Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich Arellano for the confidence in having designated Puerto Peñasco as host for the binational meeting, which will address topics of tremendous importance for the development of the Mega Region of both border states.

Sonora International Liaison Martínez Briseño emphasized Governors Claudia Pavlovich of Sonora and Doug Ducey of Arizona are committed to work on reviving the Puerto Peñasco Home Port, as well as promotion of economic development, competitiveness, security, and quality of life. She noted the bi-national meeting expects 550 participants, of which 60% are from private initiatives, 20% representing business leaders and academics, and 20% made up of government officials from both sides of the border.

Man Cycling from Alaska to Argentina Stops in Rocky Point

Story from RockyPoint.com

Herman Paredes coasts up to the restaurant to meet us for breakfast. His bike, "BiciBurra" carries a tent and a few packs. Like a sailboat, it is trim and organized. It has everything that is needed for an epic voyage.

Herman is pedaling from the top of Alaska all the way to the Southern tip of Argentina. German took some time out from his journey while passing through Rocky Point to talk with RockyPoint.com.

"There are thousands of Angels along the highway."

Born in Huatabampo Mexico, German lives and works in Indio, California. He was not a cycling fanatic before setting off. A bike trip was the idea settled on to mark his 50th birthday. And maybe lose a little weight. As the idea became a reality, the desire to do something beyond the ordinary grew stronger.

Ultimately, Herman decided that nothing less than going all the way from Alaska to Argentina would do.

The cyclist actually completed the southernmost part of this trip first. This was done to align with the most forgiving weather across the continent. This past May, Herman resumed his voyage at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. This final portion of the trip will end in Ecuador.

"This trip has changed my life. Wherever I went, people wanted to help me. There are thousands of angels on the highway. In Alaska, Herman found himself facing an 800 KM stretch of near wilderness. Ready to set off, he could not find any place to buy groceries! "Everyone who lived there relied on food that was flown, in or that they hunted. But before long people had brought me everything that I needed to continue."

Though going it solo, a lot of the time Herman was accompanied by other cyclists also on their own long bike trips. Cyclists from around the world. Two German women told of their experience with 'guardian angels while cycling through Veracruz, Mexico."

"I asked them if they were afraid of the reports of insecurity in the country", said Herman. "They told me that they came to a road block on a remote highway. It was obviously not the police or military. When they told the one in charge that they were traveling the country, he made sure that his people escorted us, and made sure that nothing bad happened to us while in Veracruz." They were told that their escort were the notorious Zetas.

German says that he rarely felt that he was in danger from other people. At his wife's insistence, he added a GPS tracker to his phone so that loved ones could check his progress, and be sure that he was on track. (There is a link on his Facebook page to show you his current location).

Riding in all kinds of weather, the deserts north and west of Peñasco were a particular challenge, because of the heat. Much if his riding was done before and after sundown.

After breakfast, we asked German to meet us over by the Peñasco letters for a photo. We felt a little guilty asking him go even a little bit out of his way! Photos taken, we wished him luck on the rest of his trip. Although he told us that he and his wife have planned a future trip together, apparently they could not wait.

She will join him for part of his journey through Mexico.

Constructing Rescue Center for the Endangered Vaquita

With less than 50 Vaquita Marinas left in the wild, the 'little sea cow' is one of the most endangered mammals on the planet.

West of Rocky Point in San Felipe, a 'Vaquita Recovery Center' is being built under the direction of Vaquita CPR. The center is part of a plan to save the species from extinction.

The Vaquitas' environment is in and around the once healthy Delta where the Colorado River empties into the Sea of Cortez. Dams built in the western US diverted the fresh water that was needed to maintain this ecosystem. Over time, the thriving land and ocean environments were severely damaged, as the water was used for agriculture and drinking water for the Western US. Recently, their have been attempts to allow the Colorados' waters to reach the ocean, and replenish this near wasteland. It remains to be seen if this will become consistent enough to have a positive effect.

The remaining Vaquitas are protected, but vulnerable to illegal fishing. Gilnets are used to fish for the Totoaba. This large fish is another endangered species that commands a high price on the black market. Gilnets left behind are a hazard to the Vaquita and many other species, who are caught and then die in them.

The US Navy Marine Mammal Program will be involved. Trained dolphins will be used to locate the notoriously shy and hard to find Vaquitas. The plan involves the capture and relocation of the Vaquitas to holding tanks. The Mexican Navy, Sea Shepard Institute, and SEMARNAT, Mexicos' Environmental Agency, will work to remove the Gilnets from the Protected area here in the north of the Sea of Cortez. Once the area is cleared, the Vaquitas will be returned to their home in the ocean. Tracking devises will help maintain contact with the dolphins.

The center is being constructed currently in San Felipe, Mexico.

Most of the northern portion of the Sea, stretching from Baja across towards Puerto Peñasco, is now a Reserve to protect the Vaquita and the Totoaba. As a result, families in the area have been restricted from fishing. The economic hardship imposed on the area has resulted in demonstrations.

The capture of the Vaquitas will begin this Fall.

Your CFE Electric Bill Explained at Last! Plus Tips for Keeping it Low!

CFE Playa DEl Carmen

Most people are confused when the white and green CFE bills comes and have no idea how they magically come up with the amount you owe. Here is a (hopefully)  simple explanation of how to read this bill and some simple things you can do to conserve energy in your property so the bill is not too large. This is important since electricity is the most expensive utility in Mexico. This article refers to Playa del Carmen but it also applies to Puerto Penasco and all of Mexico.

CFE in Mexico-Your electric company

CFE stands for the Federal Commission of Electricity. This is the same company that supplies all of Mexico the power so no matter where you move you will have a CFE bill. The CFE supplies power to 35.3 million customers which represents almost 100 million people with about 1 million new customers a year as the middle class expands and young people move into new homes.

Note: This is why your CFE bill is so important. Not only is it what you owe for electricity but is acts like an id. Many government agency's will require you to have a copy of it when going for services.  Also businesses like your bank and cable company will use the CFE bill as a confirmation of your address. Always save you bills and make current copies for use when opening other accounts or even immigration.

CFE and Rates

Since CFE is the electric company for Mexico, the entire country is divided up in to areas with different electric rates. This is actually more fair because different regions of Mexico are hotter then others and you get a lower rate in a hotter place since you need to use more to keep cool. From the map on the below you can see we are in tarifa 1b. Since Playa Del Carmen is in 1b area, the energy rates are as follows.

CFE Playa Del Carmen

Note: There is a slight difference in summer rates and don't forget IVA(tax) is added on to your bill. Bills come every two months.

Basico: up to the first 250 Kwh the price is o.713

Intermedio: from 250-450 kwh the price is .838

Excedente: over 450 kwh the price is 2.862

So the more power you use the more you will pay. This seems fair and for most people living a more simple life this means energy is more affordable. People that use air conditioning all the time will pay more and usually people that do use it can afford to pay for the service. Most households or apartments are paying around 400-800 pesos for a two month bill. For people that use a lot of air conditioning expect bills to be from 1000-2000 pesos a month.

DAC electricity rate

DAC stands for high domestic consumption. If you have DAC rate on your bill (see the categories below)  you will be paying more for electricity. The bad thing about getting into this rate chart is the fact you will be paying more and you don't get to take advantage of the government subsidy for electric.

Below is the official explanation from the CFE website.

DAC Rate

High Consumption Domestic Tariff
This rate applies when the average bimonthly consumption recorded in the last 12 months is higher according to the following table:

Rate
Limit to enter high consumption tariff
1
500 kWh / bimonthly
1A
600 kWh / bimonthly
1 B
800 kWh / bimonthly
1 C
1,700 kWh / bimonthly
1D
2,000 kWh / bimonthly
1E
4,000 kWh / bimonthly
1F
5,000 kWh / bimonthly

My electric bill is so high!!!! Why?

Is your bill looking a little higher then you think it should be? Here are several things you need to look at:

  1. Do you have the  dreaded DAC rate?
  2. Do you have "domestico" under "Uso" on your bill? You don't want to be paying as a business. Some apartments in mixed use buildings can be miscategorized.
  3. Have your meter checked. It could be faulty.
  4. Make sure it is your bill. It may be in an old name or the owners name of your apartment so you don't catch it if there are multiple address under that name.
  5. Check to see if the numbers of usage are what your meter say.
  6. If you are in an apartment building are you sure that only your stuff is hooked up to your meter? This is going to be hard to check. You can turn off all your circuit breakers and if the lights in the hall or that air conditioner that is always running stops, then you might have a hint of what is going on (or turn everything off and unplug everything and see if your meter is still moving). That is going to be a conversation you are going to have to have with your landlord.

Conservation and Money Saving Tips for your electric bill in Mexico

Saving money on your electric bills starts before you move into your apartment or house. If you are looking to rent an apartment, knowing what you are going to be paying should be important for you because it actually effects the price of your rental. A good tip is ask to see the previous bills to see what people have been paying. Of course everyone has different usage of electricity but if the rate is the Dac rate then you know that you will be paying the premium price for electricity until it comes back down.

Besides looking at the previous bills, look at the home or apartment with energy in mind. Here is what to look for:

  • Are the exterior walls in full sun during the day?
  • Are there trees around that shade your place?
  • Does the place have an old window unit for AC or a more efficient mini split air conditioner?
  • If a dryer comes with the unit, is it gas or electric? (gas being cheaper of the two)
  • How is the hot water heated and cooking done?
  • Are the ceilings low so hot air is not able to rise and keep the living space cooler?
  • Does the stove have a vent above it to evacuate hot air? Many do not surprisingly.
These are all things that will give you clues as to how much your energy cost will be. It may not seem like something you really what to think about when moving in but if you can imagine the rent being 1000 more pesos a month you would think about it, so you should consider energy efficiency.

Here are some tips to conserve energy for your CFE bill in Mexico

1. Use florescent light bulbs. These have come a long way since the stark white lights that they used to be. You can get warm florescent lights or use lamp shades that buffer the white light. Not only do old light bulbs give off heat (which makes your home hotter and you have to use more ac to cool it) but they use 4 times more energy!

2.  Painting your house outside a light color will reflect light and keep your home cooler. Painting it a light color inside will keep your home brighter and you will need less energy to illuminate the interior.

3. Use air conditioning when you are home or just in the bedroom. Air conditioning is one of the most expensive things to use here. If you own your home you should consider steps to insulate your home better to save in the long run on energy. Insulation here is not really used and walls are often just concrete blocks. Keep your filters clean on air-conditioning units for better energy usage. Consider a year maintenance check perhaps at the beginning of the hot season in May.

4. Use fans rather then air conditioning. A good fan can move a lot of air and you will not have the high contrast to the heat and the cold in the house. This can help you adapt to the climate better here. Also clean fans to make them work more efficiently. It is amazing how much dust and oil from the air collect on your fan and how it affects efficiency.

5.  When choosing appliances look at the yearly energy consumption. Refrigerators being the most important thing to consider since they consume the most electricity. This is usually that yellow tag.

6. Keep your refrigerator away from the stove and make sure it is not in direct sunlight. Clean the seals on the door and make sure the temperature setting is overly cool. Since your refrigerator gives off heat, you may consider putting it in a space that will allow this heat to escape. Clean the back of the refrigerator. Don't put hot food in the refrigerator. Let it cool outside so the refrigerator does not have to work so hard in cooling it down.

7. Close your curtains during the day to block out the sun.

8. Open your windows at night to let the slightly cooler air in.

9. Don't use appliances, air conditions, pool pumps that are too big for what you need.

Tip: Make sure you get your bill. As stated above it is an important document and you want to have it in order to pay on time. The mail delivery system is very different here and many homes do not have a mail box. What few things are hand delivered are often stuck in a door or even a bush. So learn about when your bill comes and look for it. Also know where it is usually placed. If you live in a condo complex sometimes they get all of them and hand deliver to the individual condos.

How to pay your CFE bill

You can pay your bill up until two days in advance your due date at a convenience store. There is a small commission you pay for the service. At the office of CFE there are automatic machines that you can use to pay your bill. The machines are relatively easy to use. You scan your bill, insert money and you get your change and a receipt.

Sometimes there are lines to use the machines and if you like self torture you go inside and stand in line to pay your bill. There are also not always English speaking representatives available so keep this in mind and bring a translator if needed when you need anything more than to just pay your bill.

Need a Mexican Will? Take Advantage of September Discounts

If you have any property or other assets in Mexico, it's a good idea to get a Mexican will. The good news is that you can get one done easily at any Notaría (notary's office) and the price for the service will be up to 50% less during the month of September.

This is all part of a government campaign called Septiembre, Mes del Testamento  (September, Month of the Testament). The purpose of the campaign is to educate people about the importance of having a will and to offer financial incentives to get one done.

Why You Might Want One

If you don't have a will, your property and assets will be divided up according to Mexican law. That option may not work out well for your surviving partner or spouse because 50% of the shared property can be claimed by other relatives.

Even if you have a will in your home country, it's still a good idea to get a Mexican will because it will save your family the time, expense and hassle of getting your foreign document recognized in Mexico.

Once you have a Mexican will, the entire probate process is much faster and can normally be handled entirely in the notary's office without requiring involvement from the courts.

Another huge advantage of getting a Mexican will is that it will make it easier for your intended heirs to find the document because it will be logged into a national database called el Registro Nacional de Avisos de Testamento.

Where to Go

You can have a private attorney draft the document and then file it with a Notaría (notary's office), but this option is more expensive and unnecessary. You can skip the private attorney and go directly to the nearest Notaría and have them do everything.

It's important to point out that notary in Mexico is nothing like the job of the same title in the United States. In Mexico, notaries are attorneys who are tasked with, among other things, ensuring the validity of legal documents. In other words, you can trust them to get the job done.

Mexican Bacon Quesadillas

So, you think that this weekend is all about Labor Day and everyone is celebrating (as Wikipedia puts it) "the economic and social contributions of workers", right? Are you sure that they aren't celebrating something else? Something like.... International Bacon Day?

Yes, August 31 was International Bacon Day. There is even an unofficial Wikipedia website celebrating the special day for you really curious (or bored) types. Here it is if you are interested:

http://bacon.wikia.com/wiki/International_Bacon_Day.

In the spirit of Labor Day and Bacon Day, the ideal recipe would have been the bacon wrapped Sonoran Dog. But, since I didn't think of it at the time (and was totally unaware of the renowned  International Bacon Day), I have already used that recipe. So, this one will have to do.

It does look good though...

Total Time: 19 minutes
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 4 minutes

Ingredients:

6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 cup refried beans
1/2 cup salsa
3/4 cup mild cheddar cheese, shredded
5 soft 8-inch flour tortillas
sour cream, for garnish
sliced green onion, for garnish

Directions:
1. Reserve 2 tablespoons bacon.
2. In mixing bowl, combine remaining bacon, refried beans and 1/2 cup     salsa, blend well.
3. Spread 1/4 cup mixture onto half of each tortilla.
4. Sprinkle with cheese.
5. Fold tortillas in half over filling.
6. In ungreased skillet, over medium heat, heat 2 filled tortillas at a time for two minutes on each side, or until cheese melts.
7. Cut each tortilla into 4 triangles.
8. Top with sour cream, green onions and reserved bacon.
9. Serve immediately.

English Language: Partly Cloudy with an Excellent Chance of Communication

Have you ever wondered some of these things but just aren't crazy (which is a requirement for people to look up stuff like  this) enough yet to go look them up? Well, give your brain a break and your conscience some relief because we hit a milestone in the crazy department and looked up the answers to some of the questions you never thought you'd get answers to. For example:  How many words in the English language?

The Second Edition of the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use and another 47,156 obsolete words.  For comparison, the most popular Spanish dictionary contains 100,000 words.

If you count inflections, derivatives, distinct senses, words from technical and regional vocabulary and words yet to be published, the number of words in the English language can still only be estimated.  That estimation is approximately three quarters of a million words.

Does English have the most words of any language?

Although this is impossible to answer definitively due to historical reasons, according to Oxford Dictionary resources (apparently the only lexicologists brave enough to tackle this question) it is probable that English does have the most words of at least any of the comparable world languages.

Historically, the English vocabulary has grown steadily through the influence of several major world languages. It was originally a Germanic language deriving a lot of grammar and basic vocabulary from Dutch and German.  English was also hugely influenced by Norman French when it became the language of the ruling classes after the Norman Conquest of 1066.

Always receptive to new forms of linguistic expression and definition, English was also heavily influenced by Latin as it became the language of scholars and of the Church; and Greek as it gained world status as the language of mathematics and the sciences.  Consequently the English vocabulary grew exponentially with the sum of the individual influences from Norman French, Latin, Greek added to its Germanic origin.

The only linguistic "monkey wrench" to a sure bet that English probably has the most words is that to even assume this we must ignore the handful of agglutinative languages such as Finnish, Hungarian, Turkish, Korean and Swahili that allow words to be stuck together ad infinitum for definitive description or expression purposes, which therefore can create an infinite number of words.

With all the above information under our belt, it's amazing to note that out of some 750,000 words these following strange lexicon phenomena would exist:

Dreamt is the only English word ending in -mt.Unless you count undreamt, as in technological development is at a pace undreamt of just a decade ago. (sic.2nd EOED).

Angry and hungry are the only two words in current English that end in -gry..

There is only one eight letter word in the English language that contains five consecutive vowels: Queueing.

Underground and underfund are the only words in the English language that begin and end with the letters "und."

There are only four words in the English language which end in "dous": tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.

Other fun facts about English:

There are more English words beginning with the letter "s" than with any other letter. (This is mainly because clusters such as 'sc', 'sh', 'sp', and 'st' act almost like independent letters.)

The most common consonant in English is "r", followed by "t".

The most common vowel in English is "e", followed by "a".

The overall most common letter in English is "e".

The most frequently used word in the English language is "the" (it was used three times in this sentence alone). Note: The most commonly used word in conversation is "I".

Considering the last three facts, imagine this challenge:

The book Gadsby (not to be confused with "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald), written by Ernest Vincent Wright, has 50,110 words, none of which contain the letter "e"! Called a lipogram, the book was published in 1939.

When typing the final manuscript, Wright actually tied the "e" key bar back to avoid inadvertently slipping the letter in. It was appreciated mostly by other writers who knew how difficult the undertaking was.  However, according to a Bookride blog of February 2007, the book's scarcity and oddness has seen original copies priced at $4,000 by dealers.

The word "set" has more definitions than any other word in the English language.

If you spell out every number from 0 to 999, you will find every vowel except for "a". You have to count to one thousand to find an "a"!

The only letter in the alphabet with more than one syllable is "W".

The English word "therein" contains ten separate words without rearranging any of its letters: the, there, he, in, rein, her, here, ere, therein, herein.

Is that enough of the fun facts about the English language for you today? I know it is for me.
