LIVE WEATHER STATION

BEACHFRONT

April is upon us. Spring Break is over and Semana Santa will be winding down after today. Early estimates are that well over 100,000 visitors came to enjoy our beaches and our beautiful weather over the past few days. And another 120,000 or so came to visit a couple weeks ago for Spring Break as well. Considering that the normal local population is around 60,000, you can see how adding that many cars and people tend to overwhelm things around here a bit. Many of the locals (myself included), stock up on what we need and stay pretty close to home most of the time during this holiday. Lots of people, lots of music, dancing, partying, fireworks, and fun, but it's not for everyone and I, for one, prefer things not quite as busy. Mexico is also steeped in tradition and there are some very touching ceremonies and reenactments in town which celebrate the religious aspects of the holiday. It is, after all, a Christian holiday first and foremost, even if that part tends to take a back seat to the craziness.

With every busy holiday weekend, inevitably come the accidents. Between the alcohol, adrenaline, and many people generally leaving common sense at the border, bad things happen. This Spring Break and Semana Santa has had its share of serious accidents, some of them fatal. It happens every time, and it will continue to happen until people slow down and start using more common sense and caution. The City Administration has instructed police to begin giving warnings of fines for those not wearing helmets when driving UTVs and ATVs. To my knowledge, they are just issuing warnings at this time, but fines will come after a "grace" period of some time. They are also asking people to wear seat belts and to drive within the speed limits. Not unreasonable to require people to respect the laws here as they would in their home country, but for some, it seems very difficult to do. But, doing so will undoubtedly save lives. Please use your head when you visit, and don't be part of the problem. Fun can turn into tragedy very quickly.

More and more people are venturing into the ocean these days, so the water must be warming up a bit. I haven't tested it myself yet this year, but my two sons went kayaking on Thursday and they mentioned that it was still pretty chilly. We've had a bit of wind leading up to the weekend and the street cleaning crews that roam around town have a never-ending job. As soon as they get things swept up, it gets windy for a couple days, and they have to start all over again. At very least, it must be pretty good job security. Overall though, the weather is beautiful again and Spring is here. Our busy season is upon us once again and this should be a very good year.

Is it too early to start talking about our annual Las Vegas Night for Charity? I guess not, since I have already brought up the subject... Each year on the Saturday evening nearest the 4th of July (this year it falls on Wednesday, so not sure if it will be before or after yet), the Sonoran Resorts holds a full-blown Las Vegas style casino night, complete with blackjack, roulette, poker, prize wheels, full buffet-style dinner, and loads of fun. We normally have well over 100 very good prizes, so chances of winning are very high. And, best of all, every penny goes to support local charitable needs. I will share more information as the date draws nearer, but it's not too early to start making plans to come down and attend the event.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for about 10 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Sonoran Resorts Donates Uniforms and Equipment to Civil Protection Unit and Tourist Assistance Unit

"To demand from public servants, first of all, we have to equip them well", emphasized Fernando Anaya, CEO of Sonoran Resorts, during the delivery of approximately $3500US in equipment to representatives of the Civil Protection Unit and TAU.

The donations were made at Sonoran Sky Luxury Resort on March 29, with Fernando Anaya making the official delivery of safety equipment such as jackets, shorts, shirts, caps, swim fins, shoes, as well as different accessories and tools needed to perform their duties. In addition, 5 lifeguard watchtowers were donated in order to allow better care for visitors swimming in the ocean.

In attendance, the director of Civil Protection and Fire Department, Francisco Javier Carrillo Ruiz, thanked the Mr. Anaya and the Sonoran Resorts for the donations, emphasizing the importance of having a well-equipped fire and civil protection corps in order to be prepared to face situations that may arise.

Marcia Ortega, representative of the Playa Limpias committee, also in attendance, thanked Sonoran Resort for its good will and expressed the great importance of having the 5 watchtowers along Sandy Beach as part of the now well-equipped lifeguard team.

Finally Fernando Anaya stressed that this donation is part of a joint effort between the Playas Limpias committee, Sonoran Resorts, the City Administration, and Civil Protection, entirely to assist the men and women who protect and serve visitors and residents of Puerto Penasco.

Spring Break Tourism up 6% in Puerto Peñasco

Tourism authorities estimate the total was 120,000 visitors

Spring break brought hordes of tourists to the popular Sonora destination of Puerto Peñasco, according to local tourism authorities.

The number of spring break visitors, who arrived between March 5 and 18, has been estimated at 120,000, a six per cent increase over last year's figure.

Most of the tourists came from Arizona and brought economic spinoff valued at 120 million pesos (US $6.6 million), said Héctor Vázquez del Mercado, president of the city's conventions and visitors office.

He said the destination, located 525 kilometers northwest of the state capital Hermosillo, is seeing continued growth in both domestic and foreign tourism.

Another indication of growth has been in private vehicles crossing the Mexico-United States border at Lukeville-Sonoyta whose destination was Puerto Peñasco, which is also known as Rocky Point.

In the first two months of the year, Vázquez said, they totaled 51,000, up nine per cent over the same period last year.
During all of last year private vehicles crossing into Mexico totaled 385,000, up about five percent.

Vázquez attributed the growth to promotion campaigns, a good relationship between the governments of Sonora and Arizona, and the new Corredor Seguro, or Safety Corridor, between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco.

The corridor was created through an agreement in December between the governors of the two neighboring states to erect bilingual signage, install new surveillance cameras, strengthen the presence of law enforcement and provide assistance to motorists.
BBF Partners with Dwellings to Offer New Hope to Families

Recently we wrote about a group called BBF, (Building Bright Futures) that is building a holistic system here in Puerto Peñasco that supports families' in building their own bright future:  educationally, economically, physically, spiritually and emotionally. The first step in assisting local families is through providing them with a place to live. BBF has partnered with Dwellings, a US based non-profit that is building homes in Mexico, Honduras and Cuba for families in need, to provide this vital work.

We are pleased to announce that Dwellings will begin constructing it's first home in Puerto Peñasco at the beginning of May. These cement block homes will be approximately 670 square feet and boast 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and both indoor and outdoor living spaces. All plumbing and electrical will be provided as well.

The blocks used to create these homes enable a team of volunteers to complete a build in less than a week. Work has already begun on forming the 5000 blocks that are needed for each house. Dwellings has partnered with La Esperanza, a local faith-based rehabilitation center, to produce the needed materials. This has provided much needed jobs for the hard working men of La Esperanza. Their labor will in-turn provide homes for families in need throughout the community.

Alive Church, from Tucson, AZ is sending a team of volunteers to build the first home in May. BBF and Dwellings hope to produce many homes in the years to come. Dwellings has already provided more than 130 homes for families across Latin America through the partnership of volunteer teams. These build teams are made up of all different types of people. From schools, churches and businesses, to social media friends, neighbors and soccer moms, their motto is, "Anyone can do this"!

It's easy to provide a home for a family in need. Simply log on to their website at www.dwellingsnow.com, select a family from their list of candidates, commit to build dates and recruit your team. Dwellings provides build coordinators that work with the team through the course of the week long trip to effectively build a home. Volunteers work side-by-side with the families they are building for and forge new relationships through the experience.

You can help build bright futures for Puerto Peñasco families! Each Sandy Beach Resort could put together a team of committed volunteers and change the lives and landscape of a family in need in your own community. You can do this! Log on to www.dwellings.com and learn more about how YOU can help build homes and change lives.

City Installs 112 Additional Security Cameras

Puerto Peñasco is considered one of the safest tourist destinations in the State of Sonora and in all of Mexico. The City administration is adding another layer to that safety and security with the installation of video surveillance cameras throughout town.

Mayor Kiko Munro reported that currently staff of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) is installing 112 video surveillance cameras in 28 specific points throughout town. In addition, two new road arches will be added to the road located at the Caborca exit which will have cameras with a real time link with the SSP. The mayor said that with this effort in terms of security, the municipality of Puerto Peñasco will have a total of 124 video surveillance cameras.

He went on to explain that the Control, Command, Computing, Coordination and Intelligence Center (C5i) will also be modernized through the use of technology to guarantee the safety of visitors to the region. "In security Peñasco advances," said the Mayor "We appreciate the good offices of the Governor of Sonora, Claudia Pavlovich and the Secretary of Public Safety of the State of Sonora, for their help to address the efforts of this municipality and to support us with cutting edge technology to be able to continue making Puerto Penasco more and more safe and secure". He also pointed out that, through these efforts and improvements the administration will continue to work in a coordinated manner with the different sectors of government to continue to improve the quality of life and safety of all Puerto Penasco residents and visitors.
Mexico First Choice for US 2nd-Home Buyers

Mexico is the most popular country in the Americas for United States citizens considering buying a second home abroad, a study has determined.

For one year starting January 2017, real estate website Point 2 Homes tracked Google searches within the United States that were related to purchasing a home in the region.

With an average of almost 64,000 monthly searches, Mexico was the clear winner.

Topping the list of most desirable locations to buy a home south of the border was Puerto Vallarta.

The resort city, located on Jalisco's Pacific coast, was the subject of over 10,000 monthly Google searches related to the purchase of real estate. Vallarta is also an extremely popular tourism destination.
More than three million foreign passengers flew into the city's international airport in 2017, more than half of them from the U.S.

Point 2 Homes pointed to the "guarantee of an alluring cultural scene" as a key factor driving interest in the colonial city.

San Miguel de Allende was also named the world's best city last year in annual rankings of readers of Travel + Leisure magazine, which likely spiked further interest in the destination.

Not far behind was Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

Just over 6,500 monthly searches sought information about real estate in the Caribbean coast city.

The fourth most popular Mexican destination was Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, with 6,000 monthly searches.
The region's pristine beaches and Los Cabos' relative proximity to the United States were both likely factors behind its popularity.

Rounding out the top five was Cancún, which attracted an average of 5,380 monthly real estate searches from the United States. Point 2 Homes said that real estate in the area is the most expensive in the country.

The second most popular country for Americans thinking about buying a second home was Canada followed by Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Belize.

Looking for fun things to do when in Rocky Point? You may not know that the town has a full on movie theater, just like 'back home'. CitCinemas is a multiplex that shows current, first run films.

You will find CitiCinemas on your way to the Malecon. It is housed in a commercial real estate project that never got off the ground. The movie theatre is the only thing open there. So you do have to have a tolerance for things that are a little, strange.

For example, escalators to the entrance? Yes, but they don't work. Have to walk them the old fashioned way. The theaters themselves are what you would expect though.

There are 2 versions of the films shown at CitiCinemas. It is common to to have one version dubbed into Spanish, and another in English with Spanish subtitles. Check the movie tines first online at https://www.citicinemas.com/cartelera-puerto-penasco/ and it will tell you if a film is DOB -Dubbed, or SUB- Subtitles. Go for subtitles, unless of course you want to see the film in Spanish. A lot of people make films and TV shows in Spanish a part of their way to learn the language. Also of course, not every film being shown will be from the US. Mexico has a well regarded film industry, so you can also check out the latest offerings made in the country as well.

The biggest surprise is the price compared to seeing a film in the US.

An adult ticket for Black Panther at the Harkins Metro Center runs $7.00 USD. CitiCInemas is showing the same film (here named Pantera Negra) for $52.00 Pesos. Exchanged into dollars, that $2.78 USD. Big Difference.

Snacks always seem otherworldly expensive at movies these days. CitiCinemas offers popcorn and other things that you would expect, nothing really fancy. However, if you by one of their sets of discount coupons, you get good deals on buying tickets and snacks. When I went to Panterea Negra recently, two of us used a coupon for our admissions, two sodas, and a big tub of popcorn for $120 pesos. So $6.41 USD for all of it. AND the popcorn is refillable!

Maybe having the beach in front of you puts seeing a flick way down on your list of things to do when in Rocky Point. But if you are spending a few days and find yourself with the time, CitiCinemas is an interesting and slightly different movie experience.

The Day of the Child, a National holiday here in Mexico, is celebrated each Spring on April 30th.  This holiday is special for all children as we celebrate their joy, happiness, lives and spirits!  For the last three years, Friends of Esperanza , have been embracing the children of  Esperanza Por los Niños Children's home, here in Rocky Point by having a Beach party fundraiser! Volunteers, friends and family have united to ensure each of these children are made to feel special by enjoying a days activities of fun and sun on Sandy Beach, while raising money to assist the children and the mission throughout the year. April 29, 2018, will mark the third year the, Day of the Child Fundraiser event for Esperanza Por Los Niños!

Esperanza means hope, and the Esperanza children's home located 15 miles out of town is the hope for many children who have been left without parents to care for them. These children live with two set of missionary families in a complex located 15 miles north of Rocky Point. You might recognize the sign which leads down a 3 mile dirt road to the facility that houses anywhere between 25-50 children.

The children reside at Esperanza, but go to school in Rocky Point and participate in the local Puerto Penasco community. Their ages range from 3-21 and their needs are as varied as you can imagine. Many of them have lived through very difficult challenges and situations. These children are not adoptable because they have not been legally severed from their families. They each live in the I hope that one day their family will return to bring them home.

This year we will be celebrating the Day of the Child, at Sandy Beach, in front of the Sonoran Sky resort, from 2:00 - 6:00 pm on April 29th. There will be games, food, fun, and Fundraising going on! All the children will participate in beach games, and competitions to win prizes! Volunteers are also needed to help with games, food prep, awards and raffles.  We are looking for local financial and donation support for prizes, donations, food and games as well. This support will aid in providing  five children with braces, buying two used cars for transportation to schools, and repairing/replacing needed windows and walls for the missionaries homes.

Get your Charanga Ready for April 14, 2018!

 By: Beverly Arrowood for puerto-penasco.com

We all have known someone who has been in a "Soap Box Derby" or helped to build a Soap Box car.  It has been around in the United States forever.  Well, April 14th, Puerto Peñasco Mexico will hold it's 3rd Annual Charanga Derby.  The proceeds from the event will go to the Jose Davalos Casa Hogar, which the home for the elderly here in Rocky Point.

Don't miss this event.

The event will start on top of the hill on Calle Campeche which is the road that leads to the Mirador area.  There will be a mini car show starting at 2:00 p.m. The presentation of the teams will be at 4:00 p.m.  The first of the daredevils will take off down the hill at 4:30p.m. and the event ends at 5:30.  From the videos I have seen, this is quite a trick to come down the hill and then have to hit a "speed ramp" in order to come to a stop.

Teams consist of 6 people including the pilot and  if you have a 2 seater a co-pilot.  Team members push the car to the start line and then push it  so it goes down hill being gravity fed.  The team members must run behind the car to make certain it crosses the finish line which is a ramp or in the event it tips over, get it up and going again. Once over the ramp the car begins to slow  down.   The cars can built of anything but other than wheels they can have no motor nor pedals. It must have a steering wheel but brakes are optional.  There are several safety factors for the pilots as well as the spectators.  The pilots must wear full helmets that meet DOT motorcycle laws, no flip flops or sandals and long pants.  The spectators are protected by straw bales all the way down the hill on both sides of the street.

Winners will be awarded gift certificates which are provided by the sponsors for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for the fastest cars.  There will also be a  an award for the most creative car. All you need is to come on down and be prepared to be entertained. There will be food and beverages on site.  Hope you enjoy the photos and videos from last year's event.  Video courtesy of Richard Scott and photos courtesy of Santiago Ruis and Tony Ballesteros.

You must sign up before April 11th at the RP360 office and the cost for entering your soap box car and your team is $600 pesos or about $33.00 USD.   The event is open to all people 15 years and older.
Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.
Embattled Vaquita: Group Says Just 12 Left

Only 12 vaquita marina porpoises remain in the Gulf of California, according to the director of the environmental organization Elephant Action League (EAL).

Andrea Crosta told the environmental website Mongabay that during his last trip to Mexico in February, his sources told him that "we are now talking about a dozen vaquitas left in the Sea of Cortés."
"The scientists are using sonic buoys to count them, through echolocation, and numbers are now really low," he explained.

If correct, the predicament the marine mammals face is even more dire that previously thought. Most other recent estimates place the vaquita population at around 30.

Crosta stressed that his information came from "multiple sources, not another organization."

He also said that he and his team spent time on a vessel operated by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and crew members had "heard similar numbers."

Vaquitas have been in steady decline in recent years mainly due to getting trapped in gillnets used in illegal totoaba fishing.

That species' swim bladder is considered a delicacy in China and can reportedly fetch higher prices than cocaine.
According to a study by the non-governmental organization Environmental Investigation Agency, eight criminal groups with links to drug cartels and human trafficking organizations control the illegal fishing and trafficking of totoaba.

Measures to curb totoaba fishing such as imposing a permanent ban on gillnets have been implemented but Crosta said that there is little support for the ban among local fishermen who continue to engage in the illegal practice.

"I think they are actually waiting for the vaquita to go extinct so they can fish more and with fewer restrictions," he said.
In any case, Crosta also said that the gillnet ban has done little to deter fishermen, stating "I personally saw dozens of illegal fishing vessels going out to sea in the middle of the day, even in areas patrolled by the Mexican navy."
"During the night, it is even worse," he added.

Questioned about an abandoned vaquita capture program, Crosta said that he didn't know if there were any plans to resume the plan, perhaps using a different methodology.

Two vaquitas were caught but neither was ultimately able to be successfully nurtured in captivity and a female of reproductive age died.

However, even if renewed efforts are made to capture more vaquitas, Crosta argued that it is likely too late to save the embattled mammal.

"I personally don't think that a viable number of vaquitas will survive the next high season of illegal totoaba fishing," the activist said.

"I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but this whole thing has become personal. Even if they kill all the vaquitas, we owe it to them to tell their full story, the truth, and we want to take down those responsible, who are not the fishermen, by the way," he concluded.
10 Benefits of Residency in Mexico

What are the benefits of establishing residency in México? This is a very common question from people considering a move to Mexico. There is a lot to consider when planning a move to México - when you're about to completely uproot your lives and move to a foreign country. Often, the most important matter to tackle first is to address the question of residency. If the move is not something that you had just thought up on a whim, but rather something that was months or even years in the making, it's best to be prepared.

There are essentially three ways that a foreigner (non-Mexican citizen) can enter and reside in México. There are other types of visas (i.e., student, humanitarian, adoption, etc.) but the following three are the most common types: 1) Visitante - A visitante (visitor/tourist) can visit the country for a maximum of up to 180 days at a time; 2) Residente Temporal (RT) - As a RT (temporary resident), you can reside in México for up to four years and exit and re-enter the country as you please and 3) Residente Permanente (RP) - As a RP (permanent resident), you can reside in México indefinitely and exit and re-enter the country as you please. The latter two, RT and RP, are considered residency visas.

So, that begs the question. What exactly are the benefits of obtaining a residency visa. In no particular order, here are 10 benefits of getting a RT or RP visa.

1) NATIONAL HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS
As discussed in Medical Insurance & Coverage in México, having residency opens up additional doors in regards to medical coverage. In addition to private medical insurance, as a RT or RP visa holder you are also eligible to participate in the  Instituto Mexicano Del Seguro Social (IMSS) or Seguro Popular (SP) social security programs which provide medical care. IMSS provides private employers and employees with health, pensions and social security security services. However, RT and RP visa holders can opt into this program without being employed. SP is designed to cover individuals who are not enrolled or otherwise covered by the IMSS program.

2) INAPAM SENIOR DISCOUNT CARD
The Instituto Nacional de las Personas Adultas Mayores (INAPAM) is a federal agency that that is responsible for administering programs in support of Mexican senior citizens. If you are a RT or RP visa holder that is at least 60 years of age, you are eligible to receive an INAPAM card at no charge that entitles you to discounts with merchants and service providers across the country. You can read more about benefits and discounts in your local area as well as the requirements and process to obtain a card. Please note that some individuals with RT visa status have reported that they were unable to obtain the card, which is in direct contradiction to what their Web site states.

3) CAPITAL GAINS ON HOME SALE
As a RT or RP visa holder, you may be eligible to reduce your tax liability in regards to capital gains on the sale of your primary residence. You will need to meet several requirements in order to be eligible for this tax exemption. Given that Mexican tax law is quite complex, you will need to seek professional advice from a notario público, which in México is a lawyer with advanced education and specialized work experience, or tax accountant. This may be a major benefit and could potentially result in significant financial savings.

4) BANK ACCOUNT
As a RT or RP visa holder, you can open up a bank account. Though getting cash (i.e., from a foreign bank account) is rather easy and really not an issue, the main advantage of having a Mexican bank account is that it can make certain transactions such as paying utilities easier (i.e., auto debit via electronic transfer) to perform. Additionally, not all merchants and service providers in México accept foreign debit/credit cards. Though anecdotal, I have read and heard from numerous people across the country being able to open bank accounts without a RT or RP visa. I would consider this the exception rather than the rule. It is always best to check with each bank and branch as to their individual policies.

5) FOREIGN PLATED VEHICLE
Bringing a foreign plated vehicle into the country versus buying a vehicle here is a personal decision. In Bringing a Car Into México, we discussed the requirements and process to bring a foreign plated vehicle into México. As a RT visa holder, you can keep your foreign plated vehicle here for the duration of your visa which is up to 4 years.

6) ABILITY TO WORK
Work can be defined as working for an employer, being self-employed (i.e., business owner), being an independent contractor, etc. As an RP visa holder, you do not need to submit a separate application, like with RT visa holders, to obtain permission to work. However, you must notify  Instituto Nacional de Migración - INM (Immigration) of your intent to work. Additionally, you will need to be registered with  Servicio de Administración Tributaria - SAT (Tax Administration Service) for tax purposes. Be sure to seek professional advice to ensure that you are adhering to official requirements and process from both an immigration and tax perspective.

7) REGISTER A VEHICLE
Anyone is able to purchase a vehicle in México regardless of their visa status. Ironically enough, only RT and RP visa holders are able to register their vehicles in their own name. Go figure! However, I have read and heard anecdotally in a few instances of individuals who do not possess a RT or RP visa being able to register their vehicles in their own name. I would consider the latter the rare exception rather than the rule. I have also heard of people registering their vehicles in other people's names. However, this could present potential legal ramifications were you involved in an accident or try to sell your vehicle legally to someone else. Personally, I would never purchase a vehicle anywhere in the world if I was not able to register in my own name. But then again, that's just me! Just be sure to understand vehicle registration rules in your respective state.

8) LOCAL DISCOUNTS
As a RT or RP visa holder, you may be eligible for certain discounts with local merchants and service providers. Check with businesses in your respective area to see if any such discounts are available. You may be pleasantly surprised as to what you may discover.

9) MEXICAN DRIVER'S LICENSE
One can drive in México with a valid driver's permit from another country. However, I am of the opinion that it is always a good idea to have a license from the country and state/province that you reside in. As an RT or RP visa holder, you are eligible to obtain a Mexican driver's license. Cree just recently got her Jalisco state driver's license in Guadalajara and I'll talk about that process and experience in a post in the near future. In some states and jurisdictions, you may be able to obtain a temporary driver's permit under visitante status your permit will last for the duration of your  Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM). It is best to check with your respective state to find out driver's license requirements and process.

10) VISA VALIDITY
As a RT visa holder, you are able to reside in México for up to 4 years with unlimited exits and re-entries. As a RP visa holder, you are able to reside in Mexico indefinitely with unlimited exits and re-entries. If you enter the country under the status of visitante, you can be granted up to a maximum of 180 days per visit. Technically, there is no current law that I am aware of that prevents individuals entering as a visitante, exiting the country and then re-entering as a visitante and being granted up to an additional 180 days. This latter practice is commonly referred to as border runs, visa runs, border hopping, etc. With the continuing advancement of technology at the federal level, INM is beginning to crack down on this practice. If you plan to stay to reside in México full-time for greater than 180 days then you really need to apply for a RT or RP visa. It's not only the smart thing to do but also the right thing to do.

BOTTOM LINE:
There are countless other tangible and intangible benefits of obtaining a RT or RP visa but the ones mentioned here are the ones that come to mind immediately. If you do decide that residency makes sense, you will then need to decide whether a RT or RP visa makes more sense in your personal situation.
Becoming a Naturalized Mexican

While many foreign residents arrive in Mexico for a time and return to their home countries within a few years, a significant number of expatriates do stay in Mexico long-term - perhaps for work or lifestyle reasons - but more usually when their partners and families have settled here, or when they retire.

If you're in Mexico for the long-haul, at some stage you might choose to take your residency status to the next level: naturalization.  Naturalization is the process by which you apply for and, if successful, subsequently adopt Mexican Citizenship.

Mexican naturalization offers several benefits to foreigners.  Among them (in no particular order of importance):
  • you can vote;
  • you can change address or jobs without having to inform the National Institute of Immigration (INM) of your moves;
  • you can avoid having to visit Immigration kiosks at airports when you leave to check-out, and wait less time in immigration lines at airports on your return; and
  • you avoid having to pay to change your immigration status and/or renew your visa each year to extend you stay in Mexico.
In the past, as part of an elaborately-bureaucratic charade, the Mexican authorities would ask you, as a newly-naturalized Mexican, to surrender your home-country passport to the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) upon receipt of your certificate.  The SRE would promptly forward same to your country's Embassy, who would subsequently return it to you.  This no longer happens.

There are a few matters you should be aware of in regard to becoming a Naturalized Mexican.  Following your naturalization, while you are in Mexico, you are not allowed to seek consular protection by virtue of your 'other' nationality; so if you become caught up in any problems with the authorities you cannot rely upon your home country's Consulate to support you. Depending on your country of citizenship, you might have to surrender your home country's passport - and citizenship - when you acquire your Mexican nationality. (This is rare: most countries allow their citizens to hold dual or multiple nationalities.) You should also check with a financial adviser about the implications that your naturalization may have on your personal and business tax affairs.

The procedures which lead to Mexican naturalization demand a number of requirements for qualification.  These depend upon an assortment of factors such as your links to Mexico - for example, whether you are of Latin American descent, whether you are married to a Mexican, etc. - your current immigration status and how long you have resided in Mexico. A good immigration lawyer can help you establish your eligibility; and you might consider using a reputable Relocation Consultancy Service for an initial consultation to talk in detail about your situation.

Once you file the application, the procedures take about a year to complete, and may take longer in some cases.  Toward the end of the process, you will be asked to sit for an exam.  In years past, the exam consisted of studying 100 "multiple choice" type questions, answering 5 and getting at least 3 correct.  Since January 2018 the exam process has been revised to test your knowledge of Mexican culture and history, and a reading comprehension exam to test your Spanish language.  Minors, those over sixty years old, and refugees are exempt from the exam: proving that they have a basic grasp of Spanish in conversation at the naturalization interview will suffice.

At the completion of the journey that leads to your Mexican naturalization, you will get a handshake from an official at the SRE (Mexico's equivalent of the US State Department), and a Naturalization Certificate.

With this certificate in hand, you may apply for your Mexican passport and, just as importantly, your IFE card (known colloquially as simply, el IFE) - that is technically a voter registration document, but also serves a de facto National ID Card in Mexico. The card incorporates features such as scanned fingerprints, holograms and other security devices. It's the size of a driving license and is thus readily portable.
Mexico Elections: Why Are They Important?

Presidential candidates begin official campaigning for what has been dubbed 'the biggest election in Mexican history'.

The official campaign season for the Mexican presidency kicks off on Friday, with four candidates vying for the position.

For the next 90 days, presidential candidates Margarita Zavala,  Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Ricardo Anaya, and Jose Antonio Meade will do their best to win the hearts and minds of approximately 88 million registered Mexican voters.

Here is what we know so far:

1) When are the Mexican elections taking place?
  • The Mexican elections are scheduled to take place on July 1, 2018.
  • Voters will elect a new president to serve a six-year term, 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies and 128 members of the Senate.
2) Who are the candidates?
  • Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador: He is the candidate for the coalition Juntos Haremos Historia (Together we will make history), and he is representing the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA).
  • He chose Ciudad Juarez as the site to kick off his third campaign for the presidency. He ran and lost by a close margin Mexico's last two presidential elections in 2006 and 2012.
  • If elected, he promised to review oil contracts with other countries and has also expressed doubts over the future of NAFTA.
  • This year, opinion polls show Lopez Obrador with a large lead. Many describe him as a left-winger and a populist, which could affect the country's economy, but many others believe he represents a real alternative.

  • Ricardo Anaya: He is the candidate leading the Por Mexico al Frente alliance (For Mexico in Front), and is representing the PAN (National Action Party). He has scheduled the first event of his campaign in Mexico City.
  • According to some opinion polls, Anaya is in second place. He describes himself as a modern alternative to the unpopular ruling party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and to Lopez Obrador.
  • "Mexico is going to change," Anaya told the crowd of cheering young people. "This corrupt government has its days numbered."

  • Jose Antonio Meade: is Mexico's former finance minister and is running as the candidate for the Todos por Mexico (Everyone for Mexico) coalition and represents the PRI, which is currently in power; according to his website, he has chosen the city of Merida as the starting point for his campaign.
  • The PRI is facing a loss of credibility, with current President Enrique Pena Nieto's approval rating at 17 percent, since January.
  • PRI candidate Jose Antonio Meade has admitted in his campaign that political parties are mistrusted, but says he is in the right place to capture the mood; according to opinion polls, he is currently in third place.

  • Margarita Zavala is the only candidate running as an independent.
  • Zavala is the wife of former Mexican President Felipe Calderon, a man who ran and won against Lopez Obrador in 2006.
  • Zavala split with Calderon's party, PAN, and decided to run on her own. This is the first time an independent candidate will appear on the presidential ballot.
  • Her campaign began just after midnight on Thursday, March 29 at the Angel de la Independencia in Mexico City.

3) Why are these elections important?
  • These have been described as "the biggest election in Mexican history" according to the National Electoral Institute (INE) due to the number of public issues being debated. On the same day. 30 out of 32 states will also hold local elections.
  • This election will redefine the role of the government in areas such as economic development, trade, security and energy.
  • As of 2017, Mexico's census recorded a population of over 137.7 million people. This year, INE says 88 million Mexicans have registered to vote in the upcoming presidential elections.
  • Most Mexicans resent the bad economic growth and persistence of poverty and inequality. According to the OECD, seven out of every 10 Mexicans live in poverty or vulnerability, while the wealthiest 20 percent of the population earns 10 times as much as the poorest 20 percent.
  • This, combined with levels of violence, means Mexicans are seeking new policy ideas, but it's unclear what model will the country choose.
  • Lopez Obrador's supporters believe that he is the only candidate who can confront Mexico's problems, but voters loyal to the PRI and PAN see in him a populist who might disrupt Mexico's current economic model.
Breakfast Chilaquiles

Breakfast chilaquiles! Crispy homemade chips tossed in a warm red salsa, topped with chorizo, potatoes, queso fresco and crema!

If you have never tried breakfast chilaquiles, you don't know what you are missing. Chilaquiles are homemade corn tortilla chips tossed in a warm salsa, then topped with crumbled queso fresco, Mexican crema, and thin-sliced onions.

Here is a simple way for serving chilaquiles any time of the day. In this recipe, you will find a deluxe version of breakfast chilaquiles! Not only is there a warm homemade red salsa, but these chilaquiles also come with chorizo and potatoes. And to make this meal complete, top them with a sunny-side-up egg. Dig in!

Recipe:

Prep Time:
20 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Yields: 4 servings

Ingredients:
  • 4 Roma tomatoes
  • 2 tomatilloshusk removed and washed
  • 4 guajillo peppersstems and seeds removed
  • 6-8 chiles de árbolstems removed
  • 1/4 white onion
  • 1-2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 cupcooking water from tomatoes
  • saltto taste
  • You Will Also Need
  • 4-5 tablespoonsGrapeseed or olive oil
  • 1 medium Russet potatopeeled and diced
  • salt and pepperto taste
  • 8 ouncesMexican-style chorizo
  • 16 corn tortillascut each tortilla into 6 wedges
  • 2 cupscanola oil
  • 1 cupcrumbled queso fresco
  • 1 cupMexican crema
  • 4 large eggscooked sunny side up
  • 1/3 cupthin sliced fresh or pickled onionsfor garnish
  • 1-2 thin sliced jalapeño or Fresno peppersfor garnish
Directions
  1. In a saucepan, add the tomatoes, tomatillos, guajillos, chile de arbol, onion and garlic. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the salsa ingredients to the blender. Add 1 cup of cooking water and salt to taste. Blend on high for 1 minute. Taste for salt and blend for another 30-45 seconds. Set aside.
  2. While the salsa ingredients are cooking, in skillet, preheat 2 tablespoons of oil to medium heat. Add the diced potatoes and spread out evenly. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Cover skillet with lid and continue cooking the potatoes for 20 minutes, stirring now and then. Once potatoes are fork tender, move them to one side of the skillet. On the other side, add the chorizo and cook for 6-7 minutes, crumbling with spoon as it cooks. Mix the potatoes and chorizo together. Cover and remove from heat.
  3. In another saucepan, preheat the 2 cups of oil to medium heat for 7-10 minutes or until temperature reaches 350ºF. Fry the tortilla wedges in batches until very crispy and light golden brown in color. Transfer to a plate or baking sheet lined with paper towels. Season lightly with salt as they come out of the hot oil.
  4. In a skillet, preheat 2 tablespoons of oil to medium heat for a few minutes. Pour in the salsa from the blender. Reduce heat and continue simmering for 8-10 minutes. Reserve 1/2-3/4 cup of this salsa in a bowl.
  5. To the remaining salsa, fold in the crispy chips until evenly coated. Divide the chilaquiles onto four plates. Top with chorizo and potatoes. Garnish with queso fresco, crema, onions, sliced jalapeños and egg. Spoon on a little of the reserved salsa onto egg. Serve right away with a side of your favorite refried beans.
That's What False Friends are For

Native English speakers more or less know that if you're struggling to find a word in Spanish, you can add an 'o' or an 'a' to the end of an English noun - as well as " idad" for words ending "ity" and " ología" for "ology" and " ismo" for "ism" - and have a 50% chance of coming up with something close enough that people will understand what you are getting at.

Of the remaining 50% chance, there's roughly a 33% chance each that you will: a) be misunderstood, b) say the opposite of what you mean, and c) make a complete fool of yourself.

This creative adaptation of word endings works better if you have a rough idea of which English words are Latin based, since both languages share those roots. Words with Greek origins will also usually work, since many are used for scientific names or terms.

Where this causes mistakes is with words that have a similar root or origin but have come to change their meaning in one or the other language. These words that look and sound similar but have different meanings are called false cognates - incorrectly, it turns out - or false friends.

There are many of these pairs of words in English-Spanish, and lists of them can be found with an online search.
To mention a few:

Sensible in Spanish means sensitive, or even touchy. Sensato is the word for sensible.

Sano in Spanish means healthy or whole, or clean (as in jokes), but not sane. Sane in Spanish is cuerdo-which implies "in his or her right mind"-and sanity is translated cordura, which can also mean prudence.

Sanatorio is a hospital or clinic, and sanitario is a (public) toilet or restroom.

Compromiso means commitment, promise, or engagement (to be married or any other kind), and the word for compromise is componenda, although in Mexico arreglo is commonly heard. Hardly anyone uses the word componenda.

Asistir means to attend (e.g. a meeting or event), - less commonly it may mean 'to witness' - but it doesn't mean 'to assist.'  If you want to provide help or assistance you would use the word ayudar.

Sometimes the meaning of similar-sounding words is the opposite or entirely different, for example, terso means smooth, not terse, and en absoluto or absolutamente means "absolutely not!"  I absolutely agree would be estoy completamente de acuerdo.

The transliteration of English to Spanish can also produce words that don't exist, and native Spanish speakers who know English are also guilty of this, particularly in business world concepts which have their origin in English.
Disruption has on occasion been rendered as disrupción, when interrupción is correct.

The fashionable words, 'accountable' and 'accountability', cause no end of problems for conference speakers, who frequently end up using the English term with apologies:  responsable and responsabilidad are perfectly good words, but the compound noun rendición de cuentas leads to speaker's block when trying to convert that into an adjective.

The online generation has no such qualms about cognates - false or otherwise - and happily takes computer and Internet  jargon from its original English and tags on the necessary Spanish endings, including conjugations: uploadear, atachar, taguear, tuitear, rebootear, etc. are among verbs in common use.
