BEACHFRONT
LIVE WEATHER STATION

BEACHFRONT
(Currently Being Upgraded and May Occasionally Be Offline)

Fall is officially here, and although the weather has been mostly hot and humid as of late, things are beginning to change. The mornings and evenings have begun to feel much cooler and the the afternoon heat isn't quite as intense as it was just a couple weeks ago. October is one of the very nicest months in this town and there are no shortages of outdoor activities to go along with the weather. Or, even if you don't plan to golf, race a soap box go cart, or go through an beach obstacle course this month, just gathering clams or sitting on the beach should be much more comfortable than it has been over the past couple months.

The weather today is another story entirely and I haven't quite decided what to make of it yet. Hurricane, turned  Tropical Storm, turned Tropical Depression is predicted to pass over us and, while we really are not in any significant danger of any hurricane-scale damage, we are likely to get some amount of rain. Estimates as to how much seem to vary depending on which site you are looking at or even who you are talking with. Rain alone is unusual for our little city on the sea as we normally get just over 3 inches per year. Many homes will leak as the lack of regular rains here makes it very easy to neglect roof maintenance. Unfortunately for many of the poor in and around town, their roofs and, in fact, their homes in general are poorly made and will undoubtedly suffer damage or destruction from any significant rain or wind. Usually, the heat and humidity are the only forces of nature that we face here but, once in awhile, we do get strong winds and rain.

Rocky Point, however, does seem to experience a bit of the "Twilight Zone" effect when it comes to storms. As often as not, a strong storm will barrel down upon us, only to skip over us and then hit Sonoyta hard. I can't count the number of times that it has been forecast to rain here and instead, they get rain all around us and nary a drop is seen in Rocky Point. That history makes it even more difficult to take warnings very seriously. Over all, I just don't expect much out of this storm but the change of in weather should be nice. Hopefully, it will be that point when humidity goes away and things cool down. As I write this this on late Sunday afternoon it is mostly overcast and breezy out and the humidity is very high. When it is delivered tomorrow, on Monday, the weather and my opinion may very well change.  As of now, I predict that we'll see some rain and flooding in the areas that normally flood but nothing serious. According to the news though, we better all run to Florida for shelter. In the end, who knows? I have been wrong before so follow your own instincts.

Beyond Hurricane Rosa, this month proves to be filled with fun and beautiful weather. Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for about 10 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Sonoran Resorts Las Vegas Night for Charity 2018 Provides Uniforms, Bus Repairs, Scholarships and More

As part of the Sonoran Resorts Las Vegas Night for Charity 2018 donation, we were able to provide uniforms for local school children who could not otherwise afford them. Many thanks to Barb Olszewski and her loyal crew from Adopt-a-Classroom Charity for her efforts in rounding up the kids who really needed the help and coordinating between the schools, the kids, and the company that provided the uniforms. The photo above shows the first group of kids as they arrived to check sizes and order their uniforms. After the order, the company embroiders the particular school logo on the shirts before giving them to the kids. A total of 60 kids were provided with uniforms. As part of the uniform donation, we were also able to provide the Tourist Assistance Unit Agent's kids with uniforms as well.

The vast majority of families in the USA take it for granted that a school bus will come by in the morning to pick up the kids and take them to school. And, of course, that bus will bring them back home after school. That is not the case in most schools in Mexico. Very few of the schools provide any type of transportation and, the ones that do, have to find the money to keep that transportation running, in an environment where extra funds are very hard to come by. Part two of the donation this year was to share the repair bill for the CETMAR high school student bus with the local Rotary Club. Thank you to Sami Keesecker, local Rotary President for coordinating the repairs. The bus is now up and running and the kids no longer have that excuse to miss any classes.

Another important part of the donation went to scholarships to help kids stay in school. Even though public schools in Mexico are technically free, there are several fees and costs that are involved that students must pay. If they don't buy the books and uniforms, or if they don't pay the fees required, they don't go to school. This year, through the generosity of those who attended our event, we are able to provide funds to at least 25 students in order to keep them in school for another year. The photo above is actually from last year's presentation of scholarships because the ones for this year will be delivered next semester.

We do have one more small surprise planned for a deserving group of people which will be delivered during the holiday season this year. That one can keep until it happens though. From myself and the Sonoran Resorts, to all those who volunteered for the event this year, and for all who contributed and attended, please accept a hearty Thank You. Things like this really do make a difference in people's lives. I hope to see you there again next year!
Mayor Kiko Munro Gives "State of the City" Address

Puerto Penasco Mayor Kiko Munro delivered his third "State of the City" address last month to a packed house at the Municipal Convention Center. This next term will be an extension of his first term which began in 2015, now ending in 2021.

The Mayor explained that his medium and long term plan is on track and addresses four organized strategies: Economic Development, Employment Opportunities, Social Development, and Urban Development.

During the presentation, the Mayor was accompanied by his wife, First Lady Linda Pivac de Munro, and children, as well as parents, sister and relatives. Also in attendance were Armando Ceceña Salido, Coordinator of the Commission for the Promotion of Tourism in the State and personal representative of the Governor Claudia Pavlovich, as well as Lázaro Espinoza Mendivil, Local Deputy of the II Electoral District and representative of the State Congress, members of the body of incoming and outgoing town hall, authorities of the three orders and Government, representatives of business sectors, tourism, organizations and civil society.

"Nobody stops Puerto Peñasco," Mayor Munro said to the attentive audience. "That is the slogan for which we will continue working every day throughout this new period of government. The personal commitment that I have with my city is fully shared by my valuable, and I am sure that I will continue to have the enthusiastic participation of all the productive sectors of the municipality, which is destined to become the destination par excellence of all the
Northwest of Mexico ".

The representative for Governor Claudia congratulated Mayor Kiko Munro, for the work done in the 3 years of government management, and what has been done to move this municipality of Puerto Peñasco forward. "The Governor recognizes with approval the transparent actions of the current Municipal Government," said the Sonora public servant. "The State Government has established with this local Government cooperative projects of development and attention to society ". He added "In Peñasco, you can always count on the support of the Government of Claudia Pavlovich to help carry out the necessary public management and to provide the services that benefit the population."

Coordinator of the Tourism Promotion Commission, confirming the commitment to continue working on area connectivity, reiterated that in the short term, flights from Phoenix to Puerto Peñasco will be announced from March 2019. He also stated that work on the Home Port will reactivate through the authorized federal resources in the amount of 250 million. In addition, a film commission will be formed in order to promote and coordinate the use of Puerto Penasco as a theme location for future productions.
Mexican State of Sonora Bans Plastic Straws

Last month, the Sonora Congress unanimously approved reforms to the Law of Ecological Equilibrium and Environmental Protection to prohibit the use of plastic straws in food and beverage by commercial establishments. In reading the initiative that was approved in the session, one member pointed out that the straw is made of polypropylene, a derivative of petroleum, whose disintegration can take hundreds of years. For this reason it has become an item which is used for a very short period of time, but takes a very long time to disintegrate and causes damage to the planet.

According to data from the Program of the United Nations (UN) for the Environment, in 2017 300 million tons of straws were produced.

In Mexico, he added, during the past year, 24 thousand tons of plastic straws were discarded, "something really alarming, which shows the problems caused by the use of plastic straws." He stressed the need to avoid contamination from now on by the use of plastic straws through the implementation of the prohibition of the use of these straws.

Any establishment providing plastic straws to customers may be subject to economic sanctions ranging from 1,600 to 1 million pesos. Businesses have 45 days from the date of the new law to comply with the regulation.

Nine Public Safety Officers Promoted

Nine outstanding persons belonging to the Municipal Public Security Directorate were promoted by agreement of the Commission of Honor, Justice, and Promotion. The small ceremony was held in City Hall, along with Mayor Kiko Munro, Officer Edwar Osvaldo Haros Martínez, Deputy Director of Public Security, and Lindoro Galindo Lugo, Administrative Director.

"The Mayor congratulated them on this well-deserved promotion," said the Municipal Executive. "Today we have greater security and the promotions are a public thanks to all of you who have supported us to implement the Security Plan Puerto "Peñasco Seguro", increasing and improving equipment and training."

The public servants promoted were: Adalberto Amaya Limón, Francisco Manuel López Anaya, Abel García Pacheco, Juan Contreras García, Ismael Martínez López, María Guadalupe Ríos Martínez, Esteban Ruíz Castro, José Tlaseca Méndez and Ramón Celestino Valenzuela López.

Finally, Mayor Kiko Munro invited other public servants to follow suit in the pursuit of excellent performance, and reaffirmed his commitment to continue strengthening, training and equipping the Municipal Public Safety Department, and managing more and better resources for the benefit of all persons that make up this City.

Olive Ridley Turtle Lays Eggs in Front of Sonoran Spa

The past few years have seen an increase of the presence of the Pacific Olive Ridley sea turtles nesting on the beaches of Puerto Penasco. This year's visitors have now started showing up, with the latest Mamma turtle laying her eggs in front of the Sonoran Spa Resort. Another had layed eggs in the area of CETMAR High School a few days earlier.
Even as this wonderful natural even happens more and more frequently, the excitement and wonder surrounding it never fades. Sometimes, onlookers can watch from the time the turtle comes up the beach and digs a hole. Other times, the nest is discovered after the turtle has already left, but in every case, it is an event that very few people ever experience in their lifetimes.

Pacific Olive Ridley Turtles populations are said to be rebounding but they are still considered endangered. Until recently, the nests were almost always made South of Rocky Point closer to Puerto Vallarta. This area is mostly considered too hot and nests left alone often do not hatch because of the heat.

On most occasions, resort security personal or local police are first on the scene and they immediately cordon the area in order to prevent damage to the nest. When secure, a biologist authorized by PROFEPA is brought on site to gather the eggs in order to take them to a more adequate and safe place where they can be monitored for the 46 - 60 days of embryo development. Finally, when the baby turtles hatch, they are returned to the same location where their lives began to be released. Watching the babies scramble down the beach and into the sea is definitely something that you will never forget. And, the cycle of life continues.

Red Cross Puerto Peñasco Attends 67 Emergencies During Labor Day Weekend

The Red Cross of Rocky Point was busy, as usual, over the latest holiday weekend. At least 67 emergency calls were attended by units of the Mexican Red Cross during the period from Friday, August 31 to Monday, September 3, Labor Day in the USA. Miguel Angel Ibarra Lomeli, relief coordinator of the organization noted that Puerto Penasco welcomed several thousands of visitors, so the number of treatments given was not a surprise.

Of all the services provided to residents and tourists during the long weekend, fortunately none of them showed were of a critical nature and no deaths occurred during the holiday weekend. The most serious case occurred on Saturday in one of the areas of beach dunes, where an ATV vehicle overturned, leaving two tourists injured, one of them with a compound fracture of the humerus bone, for which due attention was given.

Ibarra Lomelí pointed out that of the 67 services, 31 were due to some type of illness, 26 due to some type of injury (13 due to ATV/UTV accidents and 13 due to traffic collisions), 4 due to vehicles striking pedestrians, 1 physical altercation, and 5 from "other" causes.)
State Government to Address Sand Dune Problem Along Coastal Highway

The Coastal Highway runs from Puerto Penasco along the sea to El Golfo de Santa Clara, effectively shortening the distance and time needed to travel to that little coastal town as well as to San Luis, Mexicali, and California. The project took several years and the highway has been well received and is used frequently, however, many parts are often covered by sand after a windy day. This is very dangerous during the daytime when drivers come up on a dune covering the road, but at night, the dunes can be unseen until the last seconds, when it is too late to avoid them or even to slow down. There have been several very serious accidents caused by this problem.

Recently, a plan to address the problem was announced by the State Government through the Local Board of Highways, reported José Fernando Miranda Ramos, Technical Director of this State agency. Rocky Point Mayor Kiko Munro, along with Héctor Vázquez del Mercado, President of the Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV) of Puerto Peñasco, thanked the State public servant and the State Government for having attended the requests from the local government to address the problem.

"The safety of residents and visitors is paramount for the Municipal Government," said the Mayor. "We have achieved efficient coordination by the Office of Conventions and Visitors with the Local Board of Highways who have responded to requests in a timely manner to improve the road infrastructure that connects Puerto Peñasco with the northwest of the State ".

The Technical Director of the JCES explained that the emerging plan to mitigate the advance of dunes on the Coastal Highway includes 4 actions to be carried out, the first action will be perform the cleaning of the road and recovery of the right of way by heavy machinery, followed by the installation of warning signage and installation of barriers to limit the movement of dunes in the areas most affected.

The Technical Director of the Board of Highways stated that these works will be carried out over the next 2 months in the road section from kilometer 40 to kilometer 90, with an investment in this first stage of approximately 3 million pesos.

Penasco's "El Gallo" Wins Bout

Junior bantamweight contender Juan Francisco Estrada badly wanted a knockout victory Saturday night, but he had to settle for a unanimous decision in his scheduled 12-round bout with Felipe Orucuta at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

The judges scored it 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111 for Estrada. Orucuta (36-5, 30KOs) proved a much tougher opponent than expected. But Estrada (37-4, 25 KOs), after fading in the middle rounds, rallied down the stretch to win decisively, if not spectacularly. "When two Mexicans are in the ring, you're going to get a great fight," Estrada said.

New Fines for Flying a Drone without a License

As of  December 2018 , with the publication of the  regulations on flight in the  Official Gazette of the Federationflying drones without a license could result in a fine of up to 403 thousand pesos.

The DGAC considers that the responsibility of the drone pilot as comparable with the responsibility of the other pilots because the space they occupy is common to that of the manned ships and, sometimes the presence of an object of a certain weight can jeopardize a flight or the people who are in a manned aircraft. According to the manager, the flight of unmanned ships is a matter that must be taken seriously, since the presence of these ships can affect the performance of others.

Luis Salazar said that although it is still unclear if drones weighing less than two kilograms will fall under the regulation, the DGAC does consider the need permits and regulations for the smaller drones necessary. "It's not clear yet, but the thought is to require a license for drones of more than two kilograms" he said.
To obtain the license for drone flight, it will be necessary to take a flight course in a certified school, be Mexican by birth, be over 18 years of age, have a military release card, have completed high school, and have a good health status

Incoming Mexican President Lopez Obrador Proposes Lowered Capital Gains and IVA Taxes in Border Regions

President-elect, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, often known simply as AMLO, reported that during a meeting with Governors of the Northern States of the Mexico, his plan to implement a program to reduce IVA tax by eight percent in the border zone with USA. This zone would include Puerto Penasco. Currently the IVA (transaction tax) is 16% nationwide. The change would reduce the tax in the border regions to 8%.

His proposal will also reduce the Income Tax/Capital Gains Tax (ISR) by 20 percent. That tax is currently around 35%. These changes could have a positive impact on the Real Estate market as any significant reduction in IVA and Capital Gains taxes would positively affect the bottom line of Sellers.

Another change proposed would double the minimum wage and boost investment in 44 municipalities in six states of the country, as he outlined on his Twitter account @lopezobrador_.

"We met with governors of the north. It was approved to work in the free zone program of the border to reduce VAT within a 30 km band by 8%; reduce ISR by 20% and to double the minimum wage, to boost investment in 44 municipalities in 6 states of the country" AMLO posted on the social network.

During the meeting with López Obrador, the governors of the Northern States of the Mexico also supported additional proposals of the president-elect to establish coordinated housing, transportation and security actions among the three levels of government in areas of extreme poverty. The leaders expressed their support to provide an accurate evaluation of the characteristics leading to the poverty stricken areas and to have a create a new fiscal program for intervention in 15 Mexican cities.

Puerto Peñasco is Confirmed, Again,  as the Best Tourist Destination in Sonora

With a total of 1.1 billion pesos in economic revenue during the first 5 months of 2018, Puerto Peñasco has outdone herself as the top tourist destination in the State of Sonora, stated Mayor Kiko Munro.

The Mayor explained that the statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance through the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Puerto Peñasco (OCV) are the result of the constant promotional campaign that has been implemented both nationally and in the USA, presenting Puerto Peñasco as the best tourist destination in the state of Sonora and the Northern part of Mexico.

He explained that from January to May 2018 there was an economic benefit of 387 million pesos in lodging, 334 million pesos in restaurants, 166 million pesos in various activities, 110 million pesos in transportation and, 110 million pesos more in retail sales.

Kiko Munro, reaffirmed its commitment to continue promoting Puerto Peñasco as the best tourist destination and beach in the State of Sonora, in northwestern Mexico as well as in the southern United States. "We are giving all our efforts to make this port grow, we will continue to promote the attractions that make Peñasco the best beach in the northwest of Mexico," acknowledged the Mayor. "The bases are firm, Peñasco took flight and now there is no one to stop it. We are on our way to progress and we are going at full speed. "

CEDO's Great Coastal Clean Up

YOU can be part of the solution.

In 1995, CEDO began to participate in cleaning and recycling campaigns in our coastal city of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, and since 2005 they have partnered with The Ocean Conservancy, an organization that for the last 25 years has hosted an annual, international coastal clean-up event, with thousands of volunteers participating across the globe. Volunteers collect garbage, record information about it, and share it in a global database; by understanding what kind of waste we are dealing with, we are better able to promote specific and effective solutions for this growing problem.

CEDO is also part of the Local Committee for Clean Beaches in Puerto Peñasco, a body headed by Mexico's National Water Commission (CONAGUA). The Committee includes public and private institutions, and CEDO has been involved in implementing the coastal cleaning program, conducting biodiversity assessments, and developing an action plan for protecting local beaches. In addition, CEDO supported the attaining of a national "Clean Beach " certification for Peñasco's most popular tourist destination - Sandy Beach (Mexican Standard NMX-AA-120-SCFI-2006). With CEDO's support, in 2016 Sandy Beach was certified as the first officially "Clean Beach" in Sonora.

Coastal and marine areas provide us with essential services, whether we live by the ocean or far inland. In the oceans, half of the oxygen we breathe is produced by tiny plants called phytoplankton, and the water that evaporates from the seas' surface soon becomes our fresh drinking water. In addition, many of the foods we rely on for protein, such as shrimp, clams, and different species of fish, are born in coastal wetlands and live out their lives in the sea. Even if you eat meat or are a vegetarian, fish, seaweeds and other ocean products are used as feed for livestock and as nutritious compost for agriculture. In summary, we literally, breathe, drink and eat the marine and coastal ecosystem. Harvesting from the ocean and coasts also provides livelihoods for thousands of fishermen and their families in the northern Gulf of California, and millions of people globally. Many others make their living from tourists visiting beaches, wetlands, and islands, such that these ecosystems sustain a much wider economy and all of the hardworking people who are employed by hotels, restaurants, gas stations, tour operators and many more tourism-related services.

Unfortunately, across the globe, marine and coastal ecosystems are threatened by an ever-growing problem, that has only recently caught the attention of the media, and that as a global society we have not yet begun to tackle in an effective way. This problem is the accumulation of man-made materials, in other words non-organic garbage, in coastal and marine areas - the natural sinks for anything that floats or gets blown by the wind. Communities in developing nations, such as those of the northern Gulf of California, lack sufficient waste management infrastructure, and what is more, there exists a throw-away culture where many people feel it is ok to use and to litter trash on the street, in waterways, and on the beach. Puerto Peñasco alone generates around 80 tons of trash daily. Meanwhile, the corporations that produce these insurmountable amounts of waste keep flooding the market with more and more packaging and single-use convenience items that will inevitably contribute to the burgeoning pool of coastal and marine debris; the faucet is left running while we try to mop up the overflow.

This issue is responsible for environmental and human health problems. Materials like plastics keep breaking down into smaller pieces, for example through photo- degradation (via sunlight), where they enter the food chain and remain in the ecosystem for hundreds of years. What is more, plastics attract persistent organic pollutants (POP's), such as heavy metals from mining, which sorb (that's a technical term) onto the plastic pieces and are then ingested by animals large and small. Even the tiniest zooplankton and corals in the oceans have been observed swallowing these toxic micro-plastics, which can impact their ability to reproduce. The toxins are then passed up the food web, such that the largest animals, and those that cover the greatest distances, like tuna, sea lions and orcas, have become living repositories of toxic waste. In technical terms this is known as the bio-accumulation and magnification of pollutants in living organisms. Other animals accidentally eat garbage until their stomachs fill and they starve (ingestion), while others become entangled in debris such as abandoned fishing nets, and drown. In a tragic twist of irony, humans wind up consuming the very trash that we produced, together with the toxic substances we have dumped into the sea.

Scientists at Technical University are Eating their Cutlery

Researchers develop disposable utensils made from rice hulls

What to do with disposable cutlery? The thrifty may reuse the utensils while the crafty may use them as children's art supplies. But a team of scientists from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) is eating theirs.

Made out of rice hulls, the edible utensils developed by a research team at the IPN Center for Development of Biotic Products (Ceprobi) are not only a source of nourishment, but contribute to a cleaner environment.

Rice hulls are traditionally used in Mexico as livestock feed due to their short shelf life. Working with this raw material, the researchers first controlled its quick oxidation process in order to be able to experiment longer with it. This led to the development of highly nutritious marzipan and a tortilla chip-like product.

The stabilized rice hull has high levels of essential amino acids, several vitamins, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, selenium and mono and polyunsaturated fats.

The development of the edible cutlery was the result of a trial and error process through which the researchers found the ideal texture for the end product. Apart from the rice hulls the utensils contain just water and a few other natural ingredients.

Spoons manufactured with the material have adequate resistance, the researchers found, and perform as expected when in contact with hot meals. Still, they are not yet satisfied and are experimenting with adding natural gum to harden the product.
Mexico's Oldest Woman - and Perhaps Oldest in the World - Dies at 124

Socorro Medrano is survived by four of her 21 children

Mexico's oldest woman, Socorro Medrano Guevara, died yesterday at the ripe old age of 124 in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. She might also have been the world's oldest woman and the oldest person ever.

Born in San Luis Potosí on June 17, 1894, Doña Socorrito, as her relatives and friends affectionately called her, had 21 children, including sets of twins and triplets. The word among her family members is that Medrano had approximately 90 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Only four of her children are still alive; her husband died in 1975.

Medrano's health started to deteriorate over the last few weeks. One of her daughters told the newspaper El Universal that when the elderly woman started to refuse meals, medical intervention was requested.

Another woman from Tamaulipas, Leandra Becerra Lumbreras, was Mexico's oldest woman until she died in 2015 at the age of 127. She, too, might have been not only the oldest woman in the world but the oldest person in recorded history.

But neither is on the list of verified oldest women on Wikipedia. The oldest woman ever whose age has been verified was Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at 122. She has also been verified as the oldest person ever.

The oldest of the six living women on the list is Kane Tanaka of Japan, aged 115.
Pan de Muertos - Day of the Dead Bread

These are a few particular foods that are traditionally associated with the Day of the Dead season in Mexico. These dishes are commonly prepared and eaten at this time of year, and often placed on altars as offerings for the spirits who, it is believed, visit their loved ones on this one day of the year and consume the essence of the foods that are laid out for them. After the holiday has passed, the living dismantle the alter and may eat whatever foods remain, although these are said to have lost much of their flavor because the dead have already consumed the essential part of it. This holiday is a mixture of Catholic and native Mesoamerican beliefs and customs, and most of the foods that are associated with the holiday developed out of a combination of those different traditions.

Pan de Muerto is the bread that is prepared and eaten during the Day of the Dead season. It is an essential element of the altar, and perhaps the food item which is most closely associated with the holiday. Although the type of bread that is designated pan de muerto may vary regionally, most commonly it is a round, slightly sweet bread flavored with anise or citrus and decorated with shapes on top which are suggestive of bones, often either sprinkled with sugar or sesame seeds. Wheat was introduced by the Europeans and it was not present in ancient Mesoamerica. The significance of bread in the Catholic religion as symbolizing the body of Christ may be a factor in the importance of bread for this holiday. The bread is said to represent the deceased.

Many  varieties of pan de muerto exist, with their shape, texture, and flavor particular to one or more geographical and cultural regions in Mexico. This recipe for pan de muerto, common in Mexico City and the central part of the country, yields a sweet, semi-spherical loaf decorated with pieces of dough in shapes that represent bones and tears.

Nowadays, many people buy pan de muerto from a bakery, but you can help keep the delicious tradition of homemade pan de muerto alive with this recipe.

Recipe:
  • Total: 3 hrs 40 mins
  • Prep: 3 hrs
  • Cook: 40 mins
  • Yield: 1 large loaf (serves 8)
Ingredients:
  • 4 ounces butter (at room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup sugar (white)
  • 3 teaspoons aniseed (whole)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups flour (white bread or all-purpose), divided
  • 4 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (not to exceed 110 F)
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 2 (1/4-ounce) packets instant dry yeast
Steps to Make It:
  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine butter, sugar, aniseed, salt, and 1/2 cup of the flour.
  2. Use the dough hook to mix the ingredients until they begin to come together.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the eggs, water, and orange zest.
  4. Add this to the stand mixer bowl, along with another 1/2 cup of the flour. Mix until combined.
  5. Add the yeast and another 1/2 cup of flour, mixing to combine.
  6. Add the remaining flour 1 cup at a time, mixing between additions, until a dough forms.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface about knead it for 1 minute.
  8. Cover it with a clean, damp dishcloth and let rise in a warm area for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  9. Separate about 1/4 of the dough and use it to make bone shapes* to drape across the loaf.
  10. Shape the rest of the dough into a flat-bottomed semi-sphere. Position the bone shapes on the top of the loaf and press gently so they adhere. Let the dough rise for an additional hour.
  11. Bake the loaf in a 350 F oven for about 40 minutes (30 minutes for smaller loaves).
  12. Cool and glaze, if desired, before serving.
  13. Cut pan de muerto into large wedges for eating by hand. Serve it with Mexican hot chocolate or champurrado (chocolate atole) if you like.
Note: The most common bone-shaped dough pieces look stylized yet still simple. You might just form ball shapes and press them into the loaf in a line. You also can take a piece of dough, roll it into a long cylinder and place a ball at each end. You can add more detail if you like, but even a slightly "knobby" loaf gets the idea across.

Glazes for Pan de Muerto:

Choose one of these glazes to finish your pan de muerto. After applying a glaze, sprinkle the loaf with plenty of white or colored sugar using granulated table sugar, superfine (not powdered) sugar, or table sugar pulverized in a blender or food processor.
  • Orange Juice Glaze: Bring 3/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup fresh orange juice to a brief boil, then cool to room temperature. Brush it on the bread after the loaf cools.
  • Orange Juice-Egg White Glaze: Mix 3 tablespoons thawed orange juice concentrate and 1/3 cup sugar with 2 large egg whites. Brush it on the bread during the last 10 minutes of baking.
  • Brown Sugar-Cranberry Juice Glaze: Bring 1/4 cup piloncillo (or dark brown sugar), 1/4 cup white sugar, 2/3 cup cranberry juice, and 2 tablespoons orange zest to a boil, then let it cool to room temperature. Brush it on a baked loaf after the bread cools.

A Brief History of Mexico's Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead is one of Mexico's most widespread traditions, which is now heavily associated with Catrina skulls, all-night vigils, and Halloween. Although the Día de Muertos celebrations do roughly coincide with the more commercialized (and previously Pagan) Halloween festivities, there are in fact vast differences between the two events, despite their shared 'Christianization'. Here's a brief history of Mexico's Day of the Dead.

The Day of the Dead is an annual tradition, now celebrated on November 1 and 2 (although preparations can take weeks), in which the living honor the dead, both so as to help them into the afterlife and encourage them to visit the world of the living for one night. November 1-often called Día de los Inocentes or Angelitos-is reserved for honoring deceased children, while the second day is for deceased adults. While the idea of celebrating death might seem a tad morbid in many societies, in Mexico it's quite the opposite; death is not the end, it's just a new beginning.

Día de Muertos is popularly celebrated by holding graveside vigils, at which altars honoring the deceased's life are typically constructed. However, many people also choose to construct more private altars in their homes. These altars (altares) are decorated with the ubiquitous cempasúchil (Mexican marigold) flowers and candles, as well as skull iconography in some shape or form, and ofrendas (offerings) such as the deceased's personal possessions, favorite drinks or foods-don't be surprised to see cigarettes, cans of Coke and football shirts on a Day of the Dead altar! These items supposedly convince the deceased to return to the world of the living. Some other common traditions include the eating of pan de muertos, a distinctively shaped sweet bread which is lightly orange flavored and covered in sugar, the creation of sugar skulls, and painting one's face to look like that of a Calavera Catrina.

The origins of the Día de Muertos are rooted in Mesoamerican culture and possibly Aztec festivals that celebrated the goddess Mictecacihuatl. However, the festivities are now more widespread than they were then. Predominantly native to southern parts of what is now Mexico, the north of the country, due to different indigenous groups and rituals, was in fact only introduced to this tradition within the last two centuries. Either way, due to the arrival and influence of Christianity which sought to annihilate many indigenous rituals, the festivities we see today in all likelihood vary somewhat from the Mesoamerican Día de Muertos celebrations. This is most true when we consider the moving of the festival's dates; previously celebrated sometime around early August onwards, Christian influence shifted the Día de Muertos to All Hallows' Eve and All Saint's Day. Ultimately, the Day of the Dead is now an agglomeration of various different cultures and beliefs.
