Welcome to December and the Holiday season. Things in town typically slow down a bit during the winter months, and that's not always a bad thing. It seems that there is always so much going on that it is easy to appreciate the change of pace with fewer people in town. Beaches all to yourself. No waiting in restaurants. And, there is something to be said about making it all the way across town in 10 minutes without hitting any traffic.

I frequently get emails from people looking for advice, for my opinion on something, for an update on one thing or another, and I truly don't mind. I always say that I'm happy to help with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not - and it's true. That said, the majority of my emails are usually concentrated on a fairly small number of subjects. Lately one popular subject has been the fact that our Live Beach Camera has been out of commission for quite awhile. Well, I am happy to report that it's up and running again. The link is to the right side of this newsletter if you haven't seen it before.

While we're on the subject of subjects. I have been getting a number of emails asking about the Lukeville border crossing. With so many migrants gathering in Tijuana, people understandably want to know if there is a problem or delay happening at our gateway back and forth. I'm happy to report that it's business as usual. I see people who come and go every day and everyone of them tells me that they have beefed up the security a bit, but there is no problem and no unexpected delay.

Our Holiday Food Drive continues until the end of this month. If you're coming to town, please don't forget to stop by one of our sales offices to drop something off. This year seems to have gotten off to a slower than usual start, but we still have a full month to go. Normally, we gather everything up and donate it to either DIF or the Senior Citizens Home sometime shortly after New Year's Day.

The Sonoran Resorts orders a supply of high quality wall calendars about this time each year and our supply of 2019 calendars should be arriving any day now. These calendars boast beautiful photos of our resorts, individual condos, and of course, the pool areas and beach. The supply is limited so if you would like one, please stop by the Sonoran Sky to pick one up before they run out (free of charge, of course).

Finally, changing direction a bit, I would like to introduce Sonoran Resorts newest employee, Grace Irineo. Grace is an attorney who grew up right here in Puerto Penasco. She has officially taken over the position of Office Manager and Real Estate Attorney for the Sonoran Resorts Sales Department. She shares an office with me at the Sonoran Sky.

The position had been held for the previous 11 years by Laura Valencia. Laura's last official day with the Sonoran Resorts was Saturday, October 27th. All of us here at the Sonoran Resorts wish Laura all the best in her new endeavors.

As for the Sonoran Resorts and our Sales Department, business has gone on as usual. We have had a very busy year and we will continue to care for all of our owner's and client's needs, now and in the future. We're always here when you need us.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for almost 11 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Since the inauguration of a migrant shelter in Rocky Point on November 1, the facility, founded by the Puerto Penasco Municipal Government in coordination with the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, has served 65 people as migrants, of which 40 are identified as Central Americans, and 25 of them Mexican migrants.

Oralia López Navarro, Municipal Coordinator of the center, located between the Avenida Dimas Noriega and Constitución, announced that although the recent migrant caravan through the country has attracted much attention, Puerto Peñasco has not been a point of passage, and although migrants from Honduras have been treated, they have indicated that they are not part of the caravan.

The Central American migrants served did not arrive together, but instead arrived in small groups, all arriving at Peñasco by means of the freight trains that pass through town.

López Navarro pointed out that migrants are allowed two days in the shelter, after which the normally move on - often towards the border, so the attention given to them in the shelter is temporary.

The migrant center has the capacity to serve 40 people with transitory status. It has bathrooms and showers, 4 individual modules for women and children, a washer and dryer, a registration module, drinking water and electricity, as well as personal hygiene and cleaning items.

The Directorate of Public Safety is involved in the Casa del Migrante, as well as the Municipal Unit of Civil Protection and Firemen, Municipal DIF, Directorate of Religious Affairs, Municipal Health Coordination, and the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe plus volunteers.
More than 29 Tons of Trash Picked During Rally

More than 29 tons of garbage was collected throughout the tourist areas in the city by the Comprehensive Municipal Operator for Cleaning (OOMISLIM) during the annual Rocky Point Rally 2018, reported Benjamin White Ortega, Director of OOMISLIM.

The Director explained that the special cleaning operation was performed from Thursday, November 8, to Monday, November 12, and was supported by 25 workers of the Cleaning Operator Organization, Federal Land and Maritime Zone (ZOFEMAT), as well as the Directorate of Municipal Public Services.

"On the instructions of Mayor Kiko Munro we implemented a special waste collection operation to support the Rally Organizing Committee and to give the best image to the visitors, as well as to ensure that residents had the security of having a clean and waste-free city in the main tourist areas ", said the public servant.

He explained that for the correct disposal of garbage in areas such as the Malecón, Mirador, and on Calles 12, 13 and 14, it was necessary to use 3 collection trucks, two pickups with trailers, as well as cleaning equipment and tools.

He pointed out that the 2 crews of workers comprised of 25 people began their cleaning activities from 6:00 in the morning to 10:00 at night in the Malecón, while another work team carried out collection work on Calle 12, 13, 14, and Mirador area from 6:00 in the morning to 1:00 in the afternoon.
Congress Puts Border Region Tax Cuts on Hold: Conditions not Right

Lawmakers concerned about impact on revenue streams say no to AMLO's campaign promise.

The incoming government's plan to cut tax rates in the northern border region has been put on ice by federal lawmakers.

At a meeting in Mexico City, the chairs of the budget and finance committees in both houses of Congress warned that conditions are not right to reduce the value-added tax (IVA) and income tax (ISR) rates near the Mexico-United States border.

President-elect López Obrador said during the election campaign that his government would establish a free zone extending 30 kilometers south of the border in which the IVA would be cut by half from 16% to 8% and the maximum ISR/Capital Gains rate will be reduced from 30% to 20%.

But at least in the short term, it appears that he will not have the legislative support required to make the changes.

Alejandro Armenta, a senator with López Obrador's Morena party and chair of the upper house finance committee, said there is a consensus in the Senate that "a lot of care" must be taken with regard to the design of the next budget and Federal Revenue Act.

"It's going to be a transitional budget and in the Senate, for the good of the country, we'll responsibly adopt the prudence [necessary] in the approval of the Revenue Act," he said.

Patricia Terrazas, a National Action Party (PAN) lawmaker who heads up the lower house finance committee, spoke more bluntly about the López Obrador free zone proposal, intended to provide a boost to the economy in the north of the country and slow down migration to the United States.

"Adjusting taxes at the moment is not an option. Nobody is bound to the impossible," she said.

Terrazas added that while the plan is currently under review, the possibility of it becoming a reality "appears very complicated" because of the impact the tax reductions would have on government revenue streams.

The PAN, a conservative party which was in office between 2000 and 2012, had previously supported the idea.

Even if reductions in the IVA and ISR tax rates for the northern border zone were approved, Terrazas said, "they couldn't take effect in January" because changes required to electronic invoicing systems would not have been implemented. The preparation necessary to adopt the free zone plan could, however, take place during the first half of next year, she added.

Her colleague in the lower house, Morena party Deputy and budget committee chair Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar also said that cutting tax rates was "difficult" but stressed that the proposal was still being analyzed.

Even before taking office, the president-elect has been held partially responsible for the deterioration in Mexico's economic outlook for 2019, with his decision to cancel the Mexico City International Airport project a main target of criticism.

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Arizona Public Servant Donates Equipment to Police

Arizona DPS officer, Keith Duckett, has taken it upon himself to spread the word to his fellow officers suggesting that they donate "out of date" equipment that the DPS had replaced, to the local Puerto Penasco Police Department. Duckett remarked that, according to policy, officers in Arizona are not allowed to use equipment past the manufacturers warranty date, but that the equipment is still in perfectly usable condition.

After seeing a couple police vests hanging in his closet, unused, he contacted some of his fellow officers and they gathered up the first load to be donated. Vests of this type and quality would normally sell for over $3000 each and they had just been left hanging in the closet. "If there is even the possibility of saving one life, I want to do whatever I can to help" said Officer Duckett.

The meeting took place at the Puerto Penasco main police station in attendance of Mayor Kiko Munro's assistant and Chief of Police. At the meeting, several police vests were donated along with the promise to spread the word among officers in order to collect more equipment which he could bring in the near future.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador Takes Office as Mexico's President

Andrés Manuel López Obrador is the former mayor of Mexico City and the country's first Left president in over two decades. Popularly known as AMLO, he will begin his six-year term office today (December 1) succeeding Enrique Peña Nieto.

All eyes will be on the inauguration, anticipated to also be attended by U.S Vice President Mike Pence instead of Donald Trump, where the new leftist leader will lay out the tone of his upcoming presidency.

The current president-elect has already begun to make waves in the political sphere, cancelling the new airport build based on a referendum as well as hosting a number of other people's votes on upcoming issues such as the Mayan train and extending funding to pensions . At the same time, Pena Nieto seals his legacy with a low 24% approval rating and a trip to Argentina for the G20 where the NAFTA renegotiated trade deal is anticipated to be signed.

Starting at 11 am at Mexico City's Zocalo, special coverage of the inauguration will be supported by analysis of the event and more than ten news correspondents from Noticias Telemundo. The formal ceremony will then take place at the Legislative Palace at midday before AMLO is handed the presidential sash by Pena Nieto. His first speech will then be followed by a festival in the Zocalo to celebrate the new presidency .
Import Exemption Amount Temporarily Raised for the Holiday Season

The Mexican Revenue Authority, SAT, will raise the limit of merchandise value that Mexicans and permanent resident foreigners can bring from abroad without paying taxes from $300 US to $500 US.

The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) reported, through the Tax Administration Service (SAT), that an increase in the value limit of merchandise allowed for Mexican citizens and authorized foreigners arriving in the country will be allowed from November 1, 2018 to January 8, 2019.

In a statement, he reported that the benefits are part of the Paisano Program, which normally allow up to $ 300 worth of merchandise, but will be temporarily raised so that you can enter up to 500 dollars in goods.

However, the department of the SHCP specified that those who exceed the $500 limit will need to pay the applicable tax on any overage with a credit or debit card directly at the customs office.

Some of the objects for personal use that can be passed as luggage and that will be exempt taxes are clothing, footwear, toiletries and beauty products, up to three cell phones, a laptop computer. There are other items considered as "personal" that can be found on the SAT website.

The bulletin also made a poignant reminder that any type of narcotic drugs, firearms, illegal substances, and the "normal" list of prohibited items are still illegal to bring into the country and any violations will be handled according to the letter of the law.

If You Think Good People are Hard to Find, Meet Mark and Barb Olszewski

By Joe Houchin

At first blush one could get the idea that our little paradise by the sea is bubbling over with charitable organizations. Taking a closer look, however, reveals that there is very little duplication of effort and a whole lot of cooperative endeavor toward providing for all the needy citizens of this deserving community.

As with any volunteer effort, or any effort for that matter, the effectiveness of reaching goals is directly related to the motivation of those who are willing to take massive, immediate action to get stuff done.
Enter Mark and Barb Olszewski who moved to Rocky Point nearly two decades ago from Tempe, Arizona and who are known and appreciated by dozens of charitable organizations and thousands of local citizens-kids and parents alike.
Their good natured good will is contagious. Their energy is awe-inspiring. Their ability to fulfill the wish lists of myriad charities is downright enviable. Plus they have consistently provided the wide variety of school supplies and equipment for the 10 schools and nearly 2,500 students in the "Adopt a Class Room" charity they personally founded in 2003. ( http://www.rockypointclassroom.com)

Their ingenious approach to solving specific challenges and needs of the various charities is surely what has endeared them to so many worthy organizations in the community. They've secured wheel chairs for La Montaña School for special needs kids; wheel chairs, walkers and canes for the D.I.F. (The official government organization to assist needy families); cash, clothing and toys for Esperanza Para Los Niños home for underprivileged children; and food for the indispensible "2 Fish Ministry" that serves over 70,000 meals to the needy each month.
In 2007, Mark and Barb got involved helping La Esperanza Para Nueva Vida (Hope for New Life) Assistance Center, the all-volunteer neighborhood social assistance organization founded eight years ago by Harold and Kathy Tuttle and Robert and Pamela Martin. ( http://www.laesperanzaparanuevavida.mex.tl )

Blanca Estela Soto Ayala, a licensed Physical Therapist in her parallel life, has been the energetic visionary and volunteer Director and President of the organization since the beginning. She's grateful to Mark and Barb for their help in raising thousands of dollars to build the basketball courts and two additional buildings to the center. This has enabled them to provide classes teaching sewing, haircutting and cooking as well as computer skills on computers donated through the efforts of Mark and Barb.

Between the two of them, Mark and Barb have developed dozens of contacts in the U.S. and Mexico such as the Tuttles, Martins and AIM, who have provided truckloads of school supplies to their "Adopt A Class Room" program; as well as 2-4,000 pounds of fresh vegetables that are bagged and distributed through the neighborhoods each month.
They have raised thousands of dollars with creative fundraising activities such as Barb's Rubber Ducky Race where they dumped 1500 numbered rubber duckies into the Sea of Cortez and gave out hundreds of donated prizes as the tide brought them back to the beach.

Mark, an avid swimmer, Certified Dive Master and underwater videographer, once raised several thousand dollars by swimming from the Old Port to The Reef-yes, you read that correctly!

He has also been Santa Claus to literally thousands of kids throughout Puerto Peñasco and known to ride his unique miniature Harley Davidson through the neighborhoods dressed as Santa to the amazement of children all around.
These are but a few of the amazing feats accomplished by this unassuming couple. As if these weren't enough they have just begun another major charitable endeavor to provide food for the thousands of residents here who have been caught in the economic crash from the tourism downturn.
Shortly after relocating to Rocky Point and looking for ways to expend their energies, Mark was helping in the opening of a then newly redecorated Margarita Villa as well as working as Dive Master aboard the popular "Island Explorer". Barb found herself managing the local Dive Shop.

It wasn't long afterward that they launched Rocky Point Boat Charters ( http://www.beachseasun.com ) which led to many long term relationships both locally and throughout Arizona, California and other states.
One of those relationships was established with famed Arizona Republic writer Arthur G. Sloane (red cap in photo) who was just beginning his Rocky Point Tour series to raise money for veterans with special needs. He and Barb hit it off right away and she worked as his destination operator for several years. His tour participants would even bring school supplies with them for the Adopt a Classroom program.

Mark, Barb and Arthur along with Sandy O'Hare of the Rocky Point Times are once again working together, this time to collect food for the needy in our fair town. The food drive began on April 24th and will run through June 8th. Arthur Sloane announced the drive in his column in the Republic on April 25th. If you can possibly contribute to this worthy cause, there are several ways to do so. If you're not planning to be in Rocky Point during the drive, you can call Arthur Sloane at 480-802-6810 and arrange to drop your donation by his home.

If you plan to be in Rocky Point between now and June 8th, you can call Mark and Barb before you leave home on their Phoenix telephone number at 602-324-9529, or from your land line in Rocky Point to 383-4963. If you know where the Rocky Point Times office is, you can always drop your non-perishable food items off there. There should be more drop-off points added in the near future and we will be sure to keep you advised. As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated by everyone involved in this important food drive, especially Mark and Barb Olszewski, who will even come by and pick up any food items you've brought down to Rocky Point with you. Just give them a call.

You're not in a conversation with this pair long before you notice something missing: the absence of negativity. It's made even more obvious by the abundance of enthusiasm with which they approach everything they do, indeed, even their philosophy on life and their faith in humanity.

"Why are we here on God's earth if not to help our fellow man in need." says Mark, who grew up 100 miles south of Chicago in the small town of La Salle-Peru. "My Dad taught me to look at others' needs before my own; to help them until they can help themselves. Then they will know how to help others when they can."

Barb is from the same philosophical mold, raised in a part of Missouri so rural the family mail box was seven miles from home! "We always helped others," Barb confides, "living that far from nowhere, it was second nature!"
If you think good people are hard to find, talk to these folks. They are good people!
New 20 Peso Coin Design Confusing

Is this coin valued at 20 pesos or 50 pesos?

The Bank of Mexico (Banco de México) has recently issued into circulation a 20 peso commemorative coin honoring the 50th anniversary of the implementation of Plan DN-III-E, which recognizes the work of the Secretariat of National Defense in safeguarding the life and property of those affected by natural disasters.

On the reverse side, the center of the field is shown, as its main motif, an equilateral triangle, an internationally accepted element as a symbol of prevention and protection - in its interior the legend "50 years", and behind, two crossed anchors.

The triangle represents the elements of land, air and sea through which the Mexican Navy carries out its functions of support to the civilian population.

While the intent is noble and well intended, many feel the design of the coin is confusing because the large 50 denoting years could easily be mistaken for 50 pesos, instead of the actual value of the coin at 20 pesos.

Not unlike the not too long ago release of the 20 peso coin that was very similar in size and appearance to the 10 pesos coin, the lifespan of this coin is yet to be seen. The 10 peso-sized 20 peso coins are few and far between these days.

For now, the newest version of the 20 peso coin should start showing up throughout Mexico, but don't be confused. It's only worth 20 pesos. As of now, there are no legal tender 50 peso coins available.
Just for your Convenience

Franchise convenience stores have come a long way in Mexico, proliferating over the years to the extent that there are now thousands of them across the country-from the largest cities to smallest towns.

People living in urban areas in Mexico tend do their main shopping at the supermarket-the principal chains are Walmart, Soriana, Mega, and Chedraui.

The local tienditas, which sell everything from pre-packaged cupcakes to soap, eggs and other staples, became the secondary source of groceries-things that people unexpectedly ran out of or forgot to pick up at the supermarket.
The tienditas clearly can't compete with the economies of scale that the supermarket chains employ, and therefore things they sell are generally more expensive, although their location in the heart of residential neighborhoods still gives them an advantage for smaller purchases.

Most of the tienditas are family-run businesses, and the shopkeepers end up working long hours to keep the store well-stocked and make a profit. Some will deliver to your home-more precisely, you can phone them and they send a boy 'round on a bike.

Into this neighborhood terrain came the franchised convenience stores which began to appear in earnest during the 1990s.  The biggest convenience store chain is Oxxo with more than 13,000 outlets; followed by 7-Eleven, Extra, and Circle K. These stores aren't cheaper than the tienditas-some products are more expensive-but many offer 24-hour service, serve fresh coffee, and tend to be cleaner and brighter than most of the local stores.  Customers can also use these convenience stores to pay utility bills, deposit and withdraw money from certain local banks, transfer money to third parties, and buy cell phone airtime.

When you consider the hundreds of millions of dollars that go into expansion and marketing of these franchise chains, what's perhaps astounding is that the tienditas have survived at all. And yet, they remain part of the Mexican retail landscape.

Some of the more astute tiendita owners who have been challenged by an Oxxo or 7-Eleven on their street have continued to attract customers through product diversification.  The franchised stores' stock is mostly limited to pre-packaged products which the franchisees have little control over.  By contrast, local shop-keepers have the option to diversify and some have done so by introducing products that the franchised stores don't offer, including fresh fruit and vegetables, freshly squeezed fruit juices served during morning hours, freshly baked sweet and savory breads, and even meats like fresh poultry and charcuterie.  By offering things that the convenience stores can't by design, the local tienditas have given local customers a reason to visit their stores - where they may also purchase much of what the convenience store offers, with the exception of bill-paying and financial services.

One aspect that is often overlooked in regard to the tienditas' commercial ethos is that they're not really run as profit-centers, but rather intended as a means to sustain the family that runs the store. Their overheads are low, there are no 'salaries' per se, and they run the shop on a subsistence basis.  This perhaps gives an insight into what keeps the old-world tienditas going amidst a torrent of contemporary marketing.

The number of tienditas has, undoubtedly, declined over the last decade and will probably continue to do so in the years ahead. Younger generations growing up tend to have different ideas about commerce and thus less likely to follow in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents.
The Mexican Christmas Experience

Christmas in Mexico doesn't reflect the romanticism associated with traditional images established on many Christmas cards and movies-with their distinct Dickensian winter feel-but it's every bit as atmospheric in its own way at Christmas time.

Local Posadas-Christmas parties featuring candlelit processions and piñatas; festivals, special events, art and music, delicious seasonal food and drinks, Christmas carols- villancicos-dancing, and fireworks can be enjoyed this time of year across Mexico.

The Posadas begin on December 16th with the main event and special Christmas meal traditionally taken by most families on Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day. The 25th of December is always a day for quiet relaxation here, 'the ultimate Sunday'-as well as being public holiday.

Many of the events leading-up to Christmas are aligned with certain religious festivals and church services which make them even more meaningful to those who behold Christmas as more than just an indulgent holiday.

In places where it never snows, the back-drop will never meet the 'snow drops and sleigh bells' imagery often associated with this time of year, but the underlying feeling of peace, tranquility, and a time for being with those you care about most is the same in Mexico as everywhere else that Christmas is celebrated.

Frenzied festive shopping behaviors are now common in Mexico's big cities at Christmas, so if you plan to 'whisk across town' in the capital, be aware that Mexico City's streets, especially those near and around retail centers, can become virtually grid-locked on the run-up to Christmas Day as people play-out the infamous 'last minute rush.'  Christmas in Mexico tend to becomes more traditional and intimate the further away you are from its big towns and cities.

Gifts are often exchanged on the night of the 24th, although traditionally and historically presents in Mexico are exchanged on King's Day-January 6th.   This is also the day when the delicious "Rosca de Reyes" (King's Loaf) is served: a doughnut-shaped cake into which a small plastic doll figurine is baked; whoever is served the slice containing the doll does, by tradition, hosts a party and serves  tamales at their home on February 2nd, Dia de la Candelaria, Candlemas.

People who visit Mexico this time of year enjoy getting away from their usual surroundings and absorbing an alternative Christmas experience: many people who have been to Mexico for Christmas at least once before are drawn back time and again to the special magic that Mexico offers this time of year, to enjoy the unusual in celebrations that feel quite familiar.

For those who live in Mexico, Christmas remains a special time of year when friends, family, festivals, and traditions fuse together to create an enjoyable atmosphere that is uniquely Mexican in its approach and style.

Wherever you are this holiday season, I wish all you a very tranquil Christmas filled with joy - and a happy and prosperous New Year!
Rompope, the Nuns' Drink

Drinks like rompope exist in a number of places around the globe: in the United States, it's known as eggnog; for the Dutch it's advocaat, and in Spain there's rompón.

In Mexico, however, rompope took on a personality all its own, and that was thanks to the nuns. Now you're probably wondering how that happened.

It all started, in 1524, when Franciscan monks came to New Spain. They went around putting up new temples where they could spread the gospel, quite a few convents among them. Puebla de los Ángeles became a major bastion for those Franciscans. As the city on the way to the metropolis, for travelers coming from the Atlantic, it was a key meeting place for both Spaniards and Creoles in positions of power. Traders, clergymen, soldiers and politicians spent days in Puebla, and they had to be lavished with the most exquisite dishes.

In their convent, the Clarissa nuns developed a liqueur with eggs, cinnamon, sugar, almonds and rum or cane liquor: Spanish rompón with a mestizo touch gave rompope its unique character. The nuns made the rompope without ever tasting it, since they were strictly forbidden from imbibing.

Only one mestiza nun, by the name of Eduviges, was allowed to taste and tweak it. After having improved the product's flavor, Eduviges asked the bishop to allow all her fellow nuns to try a little. "A nip a day does no one any harm," she said, and that convinced him.

Besides pleasure and joy, the rompope provided the Clarissas with a livelihood: by selling it, they got money for congregation improvements.

Nowadays, Mexico has a huge range of rompopes, from commercial brands to handmade versions, and it comes in special flavors, like pine nut, coffee, pecan and strawberry, made in Colima.

Besides being sipped in little glasses, rompope is also used in baking: for cakes, ice cream, cookies and gelatins. And its fame has stretched to many countries in Central and South America.

Mexican nuns keep on making and drinking innocent nips of rompope. And if you ask them for their secret recipes, you can be sure they will never give it to you.

Rompope Recipe:

Ingredients:
Directions:
  1. Soak the almonds in boiling water and then peel them. Blend with a little milk until smooth and without lumps.
  2. Heat the milk in a large pot. Add La Lechera and almond mixture. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until it becomes thick. Once this happens remove pot from heat.
  3. In a bowl beat the egg yolks with the rum, then add them little by little, to the milk mixture. Do not stop stirring until all the ingredients are well combined.
  4. Let cool in the pot and then store in a glass bottle. Store in refrigerator.
Bring This With You When You Go

Teachers of English frequently find themselves explaining the difference between "bring" and "take," and when to use one and when the other.

The Spanish verbs " traer" (bring), and " llevar" (take), are applied almost in the same way. That is, traer is mostly used when the action is toward the place where the speaker is, and llevar when the action is away from the current location.

For example:

Please bring me my coat. Por favor, tráeme mi chamara.

Take this book to the library. Lleva este libro a la biblioteca.

These are clear-cut examples, where the coat is brought to the place from another place, and the book is taken from the current place to another. As in English, there are cases where different verbs can be used for the same action, depending on the reference point chosen by the speaker. Someone at home could say: llevaré mi computadora al trabajo mañana. I will take my computer to work tomorrow. Or, traeré mi computadora al trabajo mañana. I will will bring my computer to work tomorrow.

In both cases, the computer goes from home to the office, although the speaker's reference varies.

Some people use the word 'bring' when they plan to take something or someone with them whether the action is toward or away from the location of the speaker. This is feasible in Spanish, but not usual. I will bring my umbrella with me when I go to school. Traeré mi paraguas cuando voy a la escuela," although it would be more usual in Spanish to say, llevaré mi paraguas cuando voy a la escuela.

The verb traer is irregular in Spanish, with the simple past tense yo traje, tú trajiste, él/ella trajo, nosotros trajimos, ustedes trajeron.

Llevar is regular following rules for "ar" verbs.

Also to note: the Spanish verb for take - as in taking something from someone, taking a break, or taking note, is tomar, not llevar. El profesor tomó el libro del librero. The teacher took the book from the shelf. Toma un descanso de cinco minutos. Take a five-minute break.

Just for the fun of it...

A Christmas Message:

It was Christmas Eve 1942. I was fifteen years old and feeling like the world had caved in on me because there just hadn't been enough money to buy me the rifle that I'd wanted for Christmas.

We did the chores early that night for some reason. I just figured Daddy wanted a little extra time so we could read in the Bible. After supper was over I took my boots off and stretched out in front of the fireplace and waited for Daddy to get down the old Bible.

I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest, I wasn't in much of a mood to read Scriptures. But Daddy didn't get the Bible instead he bundled up again and went outside. I couldn't figure it out because we had already done all the chores. I didn't worry about it long though I was too busy wallowing in self-pity.

Soon he came back in. It was a cold clear night out and there was ice in his beard. "Come on, Matt," he said. "Bundle up good, it's cold out tonight." I was really upset then. Not only wasn't I getting the rifle for Christmas, now he was dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. We'd already done all the chores, and I couldn't think of anything else that needed doing, especially not on a night like this. But I knew he was not very patient at one dragging one's feet when he'd told them to do something, so I got up and put my boots back on and got my coat. Mommy gave me a mysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house. Something was up, but I didn't know what..

Outside, I became even more dismayed. There in front of the house was the work team, already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to do wasn't going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched up this sled unless we were going to haul a big load. Daddy was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me. I wasn't happy. When I was on, Daddy pulled the sled around the house and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed.

"I think we'll put on the high sideboards," he said. "Here, help me." The high sideboards! It had been a bigger job than I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger with the high side boards on.

Then Daddy went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood - the wood I'd spent all summer hauling down from the mountain, and then all Fall sawing into blocks and splitting. What was he doing? Finally I said something. I asked, "what are you doing?" You been by the Widow Jensen's lately?" he asked. Mrs.Jensen lived about two miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest being eight. Sure, I'd been by, but so what?

Yeah," I said, "Why?"

"I rode by just today," he said. "Little Jakey was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They're out of wood, Matt." That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the woodshed for another armload of wood. I followed him. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horses would be able to pull it. Finally, he called a halt to our loading then we went to the smoke house and he took down a big ham and a side of bacon. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the sled and wait. When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand.

"What's in the little sack?" I asked. Shoes, they're out of shoes. Little Jakey just had gunny sacks wrapped around his feet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn't be Christmas without a little candy."

We rode the two miles to Mrs.Jensen's pretty much in silence. I tried to think through what Daddy was doing. We didn't have much by worldly standards. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logs that I would have to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn't have any money, so why was he buying them shoes and candy? Really, why was he doing any of this? Widow Jensen had closer neighbors than us; it shouldn't have been our concern.

We came in from the blind side of the Jensen house and unloaded the wood as quietly as possible then we took the meat and flour and shoes to the door. We knocked. The door opened a crack and a timid voice said, "Who is it?" "Lucas Miles, Ma'am, and my son, Matt, could we come in for a bit?"

Mrs.Jensen opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Mrs.Jensen fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp.

"We brought you a few things, Ma'am," Daddy said and set down the sack of flour. I put the meat on the table. Then he handed her the sack that had the shoes in it. She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at a time. There was a pair for her and one for each of the children - sturdy shoes, the best, shoes that would last. I watched her carefully. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks. She looked up at my Daddy like she wanted to say something, but it wouldn't come out.

"We brought a load of wood too, Ma'am," he said. Then turned to me and said, "Matt, go bring in enough to last awhile. Let's get that fire up to size and heat this place up." I wasn't the same person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and as much as I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too. In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace and their mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks with so much gratitude in her heart that she couldn't speak.

My heart swelled within me and a joy that I'd never known before filled my soul. I had given at Christmas many times before, but never when it had made so much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people.
I soon had the fire blazing and everyone's spirits soared. The kids started giggling when Daddy handed them each a piece of candy and Mrs.Jensen looked on with a smile that probably hadn't crossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us. "God bless you," she said. "I know the Lord has sent you. The children and I have been praying that he would send one of his angels to spare us."

In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tears welled up in my eyes again. I'd never thought of my Daddy in those exact terms before, but after Widow Jensen mentioned it I could see that it was probably true. I was sure that a better man than Daddy had never walked the earth. I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for Mommy and me, and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it.

Daddy insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get. Then I guessed that if he was on an errand for the Lord that the Lord would make sure he got the right sizes.

Tears were running down Widow Jensen's face again when we stood up to leave. My Daddy took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug. They clung to him and didn't want us to go. I could see that they missed their Daddy and I was glad that I still had mine.

At the door he turned to Widow Jensen and said, "The Mrs. wanted me to invite you and the children over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. The turkey will be more than the three of us can eat, and a man can get cantankerous if he has to eat turkey for too many meals. We'll be by to get you about eleven. It'll be nice to have some little ones around again. Matt, here, hasn't been little for quite a spell." I was the youngest. My two brothers and two sisters had all married and had moved away.

Mrs.Jensen nodded and said, "Thank you, Brother Miles. I don't have to say, May the Lord bless you, I know for certain that He will."

Out on the sled I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn't even notice the cold. When we had gone a ways, Daddy turned to me and said, "Matt, I want you to know something. Your Mother and me have been tucking a little money away here and there all year so we could buy that rifle for you, but we didn't have quite enough.

Then yesterday a man who owed me a little money from years back came by to make things square. Your Mom and me were real excited, thinking that now we could get you that rifle, and I started into town this morning to do just that, but on the way I saw little Jakey out scratching in the woodpile with his feet wrapped in those gunny sacks and I knew what I had to do. Son, I spent the money for shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand."

I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood very well, and I was so glad Daddy had done it. Now the rifle seemed very low on my list of priorities. He had given me a lot more. He had given me the look on Mrs. Jensen's face and the radiant smiles of her three children. For the rest of my life, Whenever I saw any of the Jensens, or split a block of wood, I remembered - and remembering brought back that same joy I felt riding home beside of my Daddy that night. He had given me much more than a rifle that night, he had given me the best Christmas of my life..
