OPEN HEARTS...OPEN MINDS...OPEN DOORS...

Annual Conference is over and I have been reappointed as Senior Pastor of Rome First for a fourth year! LaDonna Sawyer joins us as the Director of Hospitality and Connections. As we move into a fourth year of ministry together we can look back and agree that much has happened in the world in the last three years, much has happened here in Rome and at Rome First. The Southeastern Jurisdiction will meet July 13-15 at Lake Junaluska in North Carolina and elect 5 Bishops. The General Conference of the United Methodist Church was held in May and you read some of the reports and observations in the June issue of the Herald. The business of the General Conference is to "act on issues and matters pertaining to the general church", and as such the General Conference is the only entity authorized or recognized as the "official voice" of United Methodists around the world. Some people watching the actions and outcomes of the General Conference focused their attention on the discussion, debate and discourse at General Conference centered on Human Sexuality and a faithful response to issues related to the LGBTQ community, including ordination and same sex marriage ceremonies. While these topics and issues are important, they were not and are not the focal point for the future. Our focus, emphasis and mandate is to Make Disciples for Jesus Christ.

FAREWELL AND BEST WISHES

It is with both regret and excitement we announce the resignation of Dawn Daniel as Director of the Rome First School and Children's Ministry at Rome First UMC. We are sad to see Dawn depart, but excited for her new opportunity after having completed her Master's Work in Education. Dawn has accepted a teaching position with Gordon County Schools and will begin in the class room at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school years. Her resignation from Rome First is effective June 30.

An interim Director for the Rome First School has been named - Ms. Debbie Hart. Debbie is a current teacher at Rome First School She was the assistant in the Turtle class room for the last school year and she will be the teacher in the Ducklings classroom for the upcoming school year. Debbie has agreed to serve as the interim Director for the month of July. If you have questions about the transition plan for the RFS, please contact the School at rfs@romefirst.org or (706)291-9331.

CHURCH FAMILY HELP NEEDED

The TGIF Group could use your help providing a Wednesday night meal for us in June, July and August. (Model High School's Family and Consumer Sciences classes have graciously fed us throughout the entire school year but they are of course, on summer break at the moment!) If you are willing to provide and serve a meal during the summer months, TGIF would be blessed by your support. Meals are served on Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm in the Wilder Dining Room for approximately 15  people. Meals are needed on the following dates: July 6, 13, 20 and 27th , and August 3, 10 and 17th.  Please contact Michelle Horton at 540-421-6420 (phone or text) or email her at whohortons@hotmail.com if you are able to help. THANK YOU!!

CONFERENCE MISSION MONTH

Join us as the Body of Christ at First Methodist in celebrating three ministries we share with all the other United Methodist churches in North Georgia. We will be taking a special offering to support the Housingand Homeless Council, Aldersgate Homes, and Wesley Woods. Housing and Homeless Council grants funds to churches and non-profits that provide shelters, soup kitchens, transitional housing, clothing closets, and other services to very poor and homeless persons. Aldersgate Homes serves persons with developmental disabilities and encourages and equips individuals to live as independently as their capabilities allow as well as participating in community life. Wesley Woods' mission is to help people age with grace and ministers to older adults by providing affordable residential and healthcare services.

You may designate your gift to Rome First as "Mission Month." Unless you specify a specific agency, your gift will be split evenly among all three agencies.

KIDNEY DONOR NEEDED

A member of our community is looking for a kidney donor with Type A or Type O blood.  Rome First has been asked to help communicate this need.  If you might be interested, please call Barbara O'Neal at Piedmont Hospital to have a confidential conversation about what is involved with being a donor.  Her number is 404-605-4128.  If you talk with Mrs. O'Neal and decide you want to move forward, please let one of our pastors know and we will connect you with the person in need.

SUPPORT ROME FIRST BY SHOPPING!

Did you know there are three ways you can support Rome First UMC by shopping?  First, if you have a Kroger Plus card, you can link this to the Kroger community rewards program.  A portion of what you spend at Kroger will be donated back to the church to support our ministries. Go to www.krogercommunityrewards.com and either sign in or create an account.  Once you've done this, select
Community right-arrow-icon4.gif Community Rewards at the top of the page.  On the next screen, you will enter our non-profit number: 37489.  We are listed as First United Methodist Church (if more than one are listed, be sure you pick the one with the Rome address!).  That's it.  Every time you use your Kroger Plus card, you'll automatically be supporting Rome First.  Be sure to share this with your church friends who shop at Kroger.

Rome First is also a part of Amazon.com's "Smile" program.  If you shop at Amazon regularly, please be sure go to www.smile.amazon.com and select Rome First as your charity of choice.  A portion of your purchase will be donated back to Rome First.  Again, we are listed as First United Methodist Church
(Rome GA).

A third way to shop and support Rome First is through UMC Market.  Hundreds of online stores participate in this program and donate a portion of your purchase back to Rome First.  Simply create an account at www.umcmarket.org, select Rome First UMC as your charity, and then go to this site first whenever you are shopping online.
