MISSION & VISION

The 2016 General Conference is over and the people called United Methodists from all over the world have returned home to carry on the Mission of the United Methodist Church - Making faithful Disciples for Jesus Christ. If you would like to know more about the resolutions, debates, and Christian Conferencing that took place for ten days in Portland Oregon, you may read the section entitled General Conference Report in this edition of the Herald or follow the link ngumc.org/GC2016.

Mission and Vision are necessary for any group of people and it is especially true as the "group" grows. The Mission defines what we do (and what we don't do as well). The Vision defines how we accomplish the mission. Many of the actions voted on will have virtually no direct impact on the ministry and mission of Rome First. There will be media "spin" and hype from all sides declaring victory for their "cause"! For me there is only one cause - Making Disciples for Jesus Christ. To fulfill our shared mission, we must keep the main thing the main thing - The main thing is making Disciples for Jesus Christ.

GOODBYE LETTER FROM REV. ANJIE WOODWORTH

Wonderful church,

As most of you have heard, my husband, Andy, and I will be reappointed in June. We will be co-pastors to a new church start in the Candler Park neighborhood of Atlanta. This is an incredible opportunity for us. Druid Hills and Epworth United Methodist Churches have recently merged and, out of that merger, are seeking to start a new United Methodist faith community. We are sad to say goodbye to the kind, generous, and loving community of Rome and to both Rome First and Trinity United Methodist Churches. We are also excited and humbled to have the opportunity to serve as co-pastors and get to share the love of Christ in new ways in a place we consider home.
As we have been preparing ourselves to say goodbye to all of the wonderful people here in Rome, I am struck by just how much you will always mean to us. Rome First will always be the first church where I served as a pastor and a mom. Rome First and Trinity will forever hold a place in our hearts as the churches who helped us welcome two children into our family through adoption. Your love, prayers, and support during that time were astounding and, quite literally, held us together. Rome First is the church where I found my way to the path of Elder and the church who helped me reach the important milestone of ordination. It was in my work with Rome First that I discovered a call to church planting, learned many skills, and discovered gifts that I will carry with me into our ministry in Atlanta. Your love for Christ, your love and service in this community, your wisdom, and your joy have transformed me in my time with you. For all of these things and so much more, I will be forever grateful!
Rome First is preparing to embark on a new adventure in welcoming people and serving this community, though this adventure will build on who you have always been. I am excited for you and confident that the power of the Holy Spirit will surprise you in what is possible as you follow God's call faithfully.
Andy and I ask for your prayers as we, too, jump into a new adventure with God. We ask that you will pray for God to use us however God sees fit, that the power of the Holy Spirit might strengthen us and equip us for the work that is before us, and that we might find endless ways to proclaim the good news of the Risen Christ to people who need to know they are not alone in the darkness.
Thank you so much for your generosity to our family, for the beautiful reception on May 22, and for the fun Popsicles and Punch party for my children! If I haven't had a chance to say it to you personally in these last few weeks, please know that I am grateful for you. I am humbled to have had the gift of serving with you for the last four years. I will continue to pray for you and hold you in my heart as we all continue on our journeys and adventures with Christ!

May the peace of Christ be with you now and always,
Anjie

HEALING COMMUNITIES OF GEORGIA TRAINING EVENT

Thursday, June 2nd
1-4pm
Wilder Christian Life Center

Join us as we hear Harold Dean Trulear, an ordained American Baptist minister, Associate Professor of Applied Theology at Howard University and Director of the Healing Communities Prison Ministry and Prisoner Reentry Project of the Philadelphia Leadership Foundation, speak about Healing Communities of
Georgia, a network of diverse congregations of all faiths who collaborate to make their communities safer by working to heal the pain of neighborhoods and families torn apart by crime, incarceration and victimization. Congregations
within the Healing Communities Network actively engage in the practice of the principles of restoration of relationships and accountability within their
worshipping communities. Faith communities and houses of worship play a unique role in healing individuals, families and communities by serving as
resources for transforming neighborhoods into venues where family and social
support are offered to those affected by crime and incarceration.

AVERY HARRIS BENEFIT RECITAL

Sunday, June 12th ~ 3pm ~ in the Sanctuary

Hello, I am Avery Harris. I am a vocal performance major getting ready to begin my Senior year at Shorter University. Recently, I was accepted into the Franco American Vocal Academy's Summer in Austria Program. In this program, I will have a month long stay in Salzburg, Austria, where I will not only be receiving a curriculum taught by top level vocal faculty, but also play the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni.

However, in order to be able to do this, I need to raise about $5,000 in total. This amount would cover my tuition for the program, housing, food, any incidentals, and a round trip flight from Atlanta to Salzburg. I was offered a 1900 Euros work study scholarship, and my fundraising goal does take this into account.

In order to reach my goal of $5,000, I will be putting on a 30 minute benefit recital with Treva Sellers, my accompanist for all of my time at Shorter. The recital consists of arias from well-known operas, and spirituals.

If you wish to donate, but cannot make it that day, I have also setup an account at https://www.gofundme.com. Just search for 'Avery Harris Opera in Austria', and you will find the page where you can donate. All donations are tax deductible and if you would like a receipt let me know.

And even if you cannot donate at the recital, don't be afraid to come anyway, because performing has always been a love of mine, and I will be glad to perform for a listening audience. So bring your family and friends, and I hope that you enjoy the performance, and help bring me closer to performing in Austria! I thank you for your time and hope you have a blessed day.

KIDNEY DONOR NEEDED

A member of our community is looking for a kidney donor with Type A or Type O blood.  Rome First has been asked to help communicate this need.  If you might be interested, please call Barbara O'Neal at Piedmont Hospital to have a confidential conversation about what is involved with being a donor.  Her number is 404-605-4128.  If you talk with Mrs. O'Neal and decide you want to move forward, please let one of our pastors know and we will connect you with the person in need.

SUPPORT ROME FIRST BY SHOPPING!

Did you know there are three ways you can support Rome First UMC by shopping?  First, if you have a Kroger Plus card, you can link this to the Kroger community rewards program.  A portion of what you spend at Kroger will be donated back to the church to support our ministries. Go to www.krogercommunityrewards.com and either sign in or create an account.  Once you've done this, select
Community right-arrow-icon4.gif Community Rewards at the top of the page.  On the next screen, you will enter our non-profit number: 37489.  We are listed as First United Methodist Church (if more than one are listed, be sure you pick the one with the Rome address!).  That's it.  Every time you use your Kroger Plus card, you'll automatically be supporting Rome First.  Be sure to share this with your church friends who shop at Kroger.

Rome First is also a part of Amazon.com's "Smile" program.  If you shop at Amazon regularly, please be sure go to www.smile.amazon.com and select Rome First as your charity of choice.  A portion of your purchase will be donated back to Rome First.  Again, we are listed as First United Methodist Church
(Rome GA).

A third way to shop and support Rome First is through UMC Market.  Hundreds of online stores participate in this program and donate a portion of your purchase back to Rome First.  Simply create an account at www.umcmarket.org, select Rome First UMC as your charity, and then go to this site first whenever you are shopping online.
