Members Edition 2012.01

Greetings!

Ian 'Macca' McDonald

This week at Daybreaker meeting we will formally vote in the new board for 2012-13, so please be present for this important vote.

My apologies for not being present, I am in Darwin recuperating.  Vice President Roger will take the reins until I return.

In this issue of Daybreaker, outgoing President Robyn Opperman reports on the Changeover Cocktail party and the fund recipients of our breathtakingly good fundraising effort last year.  We reflect on last week's meeting with Gill Brownhill of the Wildlife Rescue Foundation at Eumundi and the wonderful work they do for our native animals, and we congratulate Dawn Hesketh on her award.

Keep up the great work until I return, I really can't wait to get back and get stuck into it!!

Yours in Rotary, President Ian

Changeover Cocktail Party Robyn Opperman

On 29th June a cocktail function was held to celebrate a year of hard work of the members, family and friends of the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads Daybreak.

The highlight of the evening was the presentations to local Charities of donation monies raised by the club throughout the year.

Representatives from Sunshine Butterflies, Brian and Marie Hayes received a major donation towards technology for severely disabled youth in the area. United Synergies representatives received funds to assist their Young Parents' Program, Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving and Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving representative, Byron Mills gratefully accepted a donation and he spoke of the importance of the alliances between the lifesaving movement and Rotary in our community.

Rotary International projects: End Polio Now, The Fred Hollows Foundation and Shelter Box are just a few of the benefactors of this years' donations.

Our Treasurer, John McAlpin made a special announcement that the club's long standing project of the 'Bookfest Storage Shed' received a welcome boost of funds from a Queensland Government Grant giving our club a special reason to celebrate this current year. To date the club has donated $381,883 to local and overseas charities since our Charter.

Since the charter of the Club in 1999 with President Neil Fraser, I step down after 20 months in office, handing the reigns to local business man and Charter Member of the Club, Ian McDonald.

It's a privilege to belong to such a dynamic organization whose motto "Service above Self" which brings many benefits to its members with incredible achievements in assisting our local, national and international communities.

Gill Brownhill with Robyn OppermanLast week we met Gill Brownhill, who with her late husband Col, started the Eumundi Wildlife Rescue Service to look after local wildlife.  The service has since been turned into a foundation, run by volunteers and committee who will keep the organisation going.

A recent meeting in Eumundi attracted over 60 people who were interested in supporting this vital service for our native animals. You can find more information at http://www.wildliferehab.com.au/ or Like them on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/WildlifeRehabilitationCentreAtEumundi or become a member by phone Mike Barton on 0418 738 245.

Dawn Hesketh with Robyn OppermanAlso congratulations to Dawn Hesketh on receiving a Rotary award.

At this week's meeting we will hold a special general meeting to discuss and ratify two motions:

1. to increase the number of elected directors from 4 to 6, and 2. to ratify the appointment of directors nominated by Macca.

If anyone who is not included in that nomination wishes to run for the Board they should contact Roger Ellis before the start of the meeting and give him their name and that of their nominee. If we have more than 6 names there will need to be a ballot.

It is important that as many members as possible attend, because we need to ensure a quorum to ensure these motions are put and voted on by members so that the Club can move forward.

Get well soon....

Our best wishes go out to President Macca and John Timpany, both of whom have been under the weather of late.  The first smitten by the dreaded 'lurgie and the second self-inflicted trying to do arial acrobatics off a step ladder.  We wish you both a speedy recovery.
