President's Message

Compatriots,

We just wrapped up our 149th annual Board of Managers meeting in Bakersfield. All totaled, we had about 70 men and women in attendance plus 7 honorees. Seventeen Chapters were represented either by a Chapter President, appointed Alternate, or a CASSAR officer. All CASSAR elected officers were in attendance except one. We exceeded our requirements for a quorum.

The Doubletree proved to be a good venue for our meeting, although in future meetings we need to ensure audio (microphones and speakers) are provided for the business meeting and the luncheons, in addition to the Saturday evening banquet. Nonetheless, I cannot thank Yosemite Chapter President Scott Nichols, enough for all of the work he put into the planning of this meeting as well as Kern Chapter President Chris Scott for agreeing to partner with Yosemite for the meeting and Kern Compatriot Arnie Burr for serving as aide-de-camp to Secretary General Michael Elston representing PG Addington.

A special "Thank you" to the seven National Officers and Candidates that traveled long distances from outside of California to share time with the California Society and allow our members get to know them and efforts on behalf of the SAR. In addition to Michael Elston, we were joined by Alan Greenly, Gary Green, Brooks Lyles, Jeff Thomas, Keith Weissinger, and Peter Davenport.

One highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a Resolution commemorating the 250th anniversary of the First Continental Congress. Compatriot Hon. Jeffrey Prang, Sons of Liberty Chapter, worked with California Senator Ben Allen who introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) No. 161 this past June 12 and with the California Assembly concurring, it was filed with the Secretary of State on September 5, 2024.

We accomplished a lot at this meeting. We have an approved Operating Budget for 2025, and we have a slate of Officers that will stand for election next April 2025, except for one very important position… Treasurer. Our current Treasurer, Kevin Bidenkap, will be moving to Investment Fund Trustee next April (if elected) and we need a compatriot with a financial background, able to read a balance sheet, familiar with QuickBooks, who can write checks and balance our checking account. This is a great opportunity to step into a CASSAR leadership role and help the California Society in a key position. Please let me or Kevin know if you are interested in being a candidate for Treasurer.

We presented the Fire Safety Commendation Medal to SAR Compatriot Christopher Scott, Division Chief, Los Padres National Forest, USDA. We awarded Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer the SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Medal. And, for his unselfish acts of heroism, we awarded the SAR Medal for Heroism to Tulare County Sheriff's Deputy Alfredo Flores who repeatedly entered a smoke-filled burning home 4 times to finally find and rescue a 12-year-old boy with Down Syndrome.

On Saturday, we also presented Miss Sophia Kaufman, NSCAR National Curator and Honorary President CSSCAR with the SAR/CAR Silver Medal of Appreciation for her project "Comfort for KidsA Year of Compassion, Community and Change" which raised over $14,500 and 100,000 donated items for foster children. Awesome!

John Ferris recognized many individuals (compatriots, spouses, and guests) with Silver and Gold America 250th medals. And the men attending the Friday Business meeting all earned America 250 points toward medals when John gave us an America 250 Minute. All Americans are eligible to earn points toward America 250 Medals. You can find out more about this program elsewhere in this newsletter or on our CASSAR website at: https://www.californiasar.org/america-250/

The Board of Managers Meeting held each Fall, and our Annual Meeting of the Membership are your opportunity to be an active member of the California Society, to have your voice heard, and to vote your heart and mind on matters before the assembly. All Chapters should have a President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Registrar. That is 96 officers. Add in 16 state officers, and we could have as many as 112 members attending our meetings plus involved and active compatriots who have an interest in being an SAR member. We only had 41. 10 Chapters did not have a vote because their President did not attend and did not designate an Alternate. Even if half the Chapter officers attended one of the meetings and the other half the other meeting, we should have at least 64 members in attendance, plus interested compatriots, and exceed 100 when including our spouses.

We can and must do better!

Surgeon General's Notebook, Volume VI

Compatriots,

Today's topic for the Surgeon General's Notebook is Smoking and Health. The smoking cessation program has been a real public health success. It has resulted in significant drops in the rates of smoking for all ages. I know many of you do not smoke, but you may have family members or friends who do. I hope you will pass this on to them. I know that one single article or program will not make the difference alone. However, we can only hope that multiple efforts will eventually be successful.

Happy Fall, SAR!

Thank you for allowing CAR to participate in many SAR events. I have enjoyed attending the SAR Grave Marking Ceremony in San Diego, a joint SAR and DAR meeting, as well as various events featuring the SAR Color Guard. Your warm welcome has helped demonstrate the power of patriotism to the younger generation.

C.A.R. is actively promoting our national project, “Courage, Service, and Honor,” which focuses on the importance of first responders and their vital role in our communities. Our societies are finding ways to show appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

Additionally, our state project, “Paws 4 Patriots,” is progressing, though we still have a way to go to reach our $5,000 goal. Any donations are greatly appreciated and will support Shelter to Soldier, which trains rescued canines to assist veterans dealing with mental health challenges. We also have pins for sale that make wonderful gifts, and orders can be placed now. I would be happy to present more details about this project at any of your chapter or district meetings.

Thank you again for partnering with C.A.R. We truly appreciate your support!

Sons of the Revolutionary Sires

150th Anniversary

Article by Compatriot Stephen Renouf

Next year, the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution celebrates the 150th Anniversary of its founding as the Sons of Revolutionary Sires in 1875.

The California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution pre-dates the founding of the Sons of the American Revolution in 1889. On October 22, 1875, a group of men met in the office of Dr. James Lafayette Cogswell at 230 Kearny Street in San Francisco, California. Among those present were Dr. James Lafayette Cogswell, Major Edwin Allen Sherman, Sr. (Deputy US Surveyor-General for Nevada), Ira Colburn Root, Dr. Peter Wilkins Randle, Richard Rush Randle, Judge Joseph Weed, and Dr. Emory Lorenzo Willard. Dr. Cogswell stated that the purpose of the meeting, which was chaired by Dr. Peter Randle, was to establish a society composed of descendants of Revolutionary patriots, and to make preparations for a Centennial Celebration of the American Revolution in San Francisco. There was a motion to name the society, “The California Society of Sons of Revolutionary Sires.” Major Sherman objected, since he was a citizen of Nevada, and instead proposed to make the society a “National Society.” Dr. Randle moved to name the society, “The National Society of Sons of Revolutionary Sires,” which was approved unanimously. The group elected the following provisional officers by acclamation: Dr. James Lafayette Cogswell, national president; Dr. Peter Wilkins Randle, vice-president for California; and Major Edwin Allen Sherman, Sr., vice president for Nevada. There did not appear to be any further meetings of the National Society of Sons of Revolutionary Sires in 1875.

On June 28, 1876, Dr. Cogswell invited grandchildren of Revolutionary War veterans to meet in his office at 230 Kearny Street in San Francisco. They agreed to continue the Sons of Revolutionary Sires and organize to participate in the Centennial of the Declaration of Independence Parade in San Francisco.

On June 29, 1876, another group of about 50 men met at the Headquarters of the Grand Marshal of the Parade at 212 Kearny Street, and Gen. Albert Mavor Winn was elected to chair the meeting. The attendees created the California Society of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires, and 26 men signed the roll as members. They created plans to participate in the Centennial Procession. By the time President Cogswell arrived at the meeting, it was almost concluded. He felt that his organization was hijacked by Gen. Winn’s group.

On July 1, 1876, Gen. Winn’s California Society of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires met at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco and enrolled 30 more members. Temporary officers were appointed: General Albert Maver Winn as president pro tem, Dr. Emory Lorenzo Willard as secretary pro tem, James Palatine Dameron, Esq., as treasurer pro tem, and William Schuyler Moses as Marshal pro tem. Signing the membership roll and pledging on his honor that the member was a descendant of a Revolutionary War patriot constituted membership.

On July 4, 1876, the Sons of Revolutionary Sires met at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco and participated in the Centennial Parade. Gen. Albert Mavor Winn and Mrs. Maria Dorothy Ayres led the group, dressed as General George Washington and Martha Washington. Following the parade, the group returned to the Palace Hotel, where Marshal pro tem William Schuyler called the group to order. Treasurer pro tem James Dameron delivered an address on the “Worthy Sons of Illustrious Sires of ’76.”

From Overland Monthly, Vol. XXVI-Second Series, Edited by Rounsevelle Wildman, July-December 1895

On July 11, 1876, the Sons of Revolutionary Sires held an organizational meeting in Dashaway Hall on Post Street in San Francisco with about 50 members present. The permanent officers were elected: Albert Maver Winn as president, Caleb Taylor Fay as first vice president, Samuel Graves as second vice president, Ira Colburn Root as third vice president, Colonel William Boardman Eastin as recording secretary, William Henry Mead as financial secretary, James Palatine Dameron as treasurer, William Schuyler Moses as marshal, and James Nicholas Makins, Augustus Campenfeldt Taylor and Alfred Spotswood Iredale as the executive committee. The membership roll book was kept at the Headquarters of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires at 603 Washington Street in San Francisco, California. The officers were constituted as a Committee on Constitution, Bylaws, and Articles of Incorporation, and were directed to report at the next meeting. The object of the society was declared:

To unite the descendants of Revolutionary Patriots who took part in the American Revolution and maintained the independence of the United States; to promote social intercourse, mental improvement and mutual benefit of its members; to organize auxiliaries, co-equal branches and representative branches at such times and places as the Society may determine; to purchase such property as may be necessary for meeting-rooms, library, museum and other necessities of such an association. They also propose to collect historical relics and tradition and make a tangible record of them; to record a biographical sketch of ancestral line, pertaining to each member, showing from whom descended, giving all important events connected with the families.

On August 2, 1876, the Sons of Revolutionary Sires held an evening meeting at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, and the Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation were read and unanimously adopted. The Sires had about 100 enrolled members. The Board of Directors was directed to incorporate the society, obtain a seal, and publish 500 copies of the Constitution, Bylaws, and Articles of Incorporation. The distinguishing color of the society was declared to be buff, in commemoration of it being used by the Revolutionary Fathers. The seal was defined as:

The seal shall be two and a quarter inches in diameter; around its edge a border of thirty-eight stars, representing the present number of States of the Union; next circle, “Sons of Revolutionary Sires, organized July 4th, 1876;” inside of that the segment of a globe with thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original States; on that, a rattlesnake, with thirteen rattles, coiled ready to strike; above, the words “One hundred years of Freedom,” under it, “Don’t tread on me,” and at the base of the globe segment, “United States of America.” This is the device and motto used by John Paul Jones when he raised it as a national flag on the Alfred in December 1775.

At a meeting on September 6, 1876, at the Palace Hotel, the president and secretary were authorized to commission vice presidents or governors to organize other branches of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires in any US state or territory. On September 13, 1876, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires was organized – wives, daughters, granddaughters of members (as well as ladies descended from Revolutionary War patriots) were allowed to join. Mrs. Maria Dorothy Ayres was elected president of the Ladies Auxiliary. There was also a Young Men’s Auxiliary for members under 40 years of age, under President William Shepard Dewey. On September 13, 1876, the Board of Directors of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires applied for a charter for the Sons of Revolutionary Sires to be issued in Washington, DC.

The group was very active under President Albert Mavor Winn and Secretary Adolphus Skinner Hubbard. But in the summer of 1878, Winn moved to Sonoma, and Hubbard left California, and the group went dormant. In the Fall of 1881, Hubbard returned to California, and revived the group under his leadership as secretary. In 1885, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, a life member of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires, passed away, and the group participated in a parade in his honor in San Francisco. In July 1886, Col. Adolphus Skinner Hubbard was elected president, and he served for the remainder of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires existence. In April 1889, the Sons marched in the Centennial of President George Washington’s Inauguration Parade in San Francisco. They wore buff badges and escorted the centennial committee.

On April 30, 1889, the Sons of the American Revolution was founded at Fraunces’ Tavern in New York. Col. Adolphus Skinner Hubbard was elected as vice president general for California. The Sons of Revolutionary Sires in California and seventeen other states agreed to change their names to Sons of the American Revolution. The New York and Pennsylvania Sons of the Revolution did not join the Sons of the American Revolution. President Ulysses S. Grant was granted posthumous membership in the SAR since he had been a life member of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires. The SAR was incorporated in Connecticut on January 17, 1890.

From Overland Monthly, Vol. XXVI-Second Series, Edited by Rounsevelle Wildman, July-December 1895

The Sons of Revolutionary Sires, under President Adolphus Skinner Hubbard, voted on March 22, 1890, to join the SAR, and change their name to the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Hubbard continued as the first president of CASSAR. On March 31, 1890, the Articles of Incorporation were filed for the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Sadly, the records of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires/California Society Sons of the American Revolution were destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire.

There are opportunities for CASSAR and the chapters to commemorate these events of 150 years ago. October 22, 2025 is the 150th anniversary of the first meeting of the National Society of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires in Dr. Cogswell’s Office in San Francisco – the progenitor of the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. July 4, 2026, in addition to being the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, is the 150th anniversary of the California Society of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires meeting at the Palace Hotel, and marching in the Centennial Parade in San Francisco. July 11, 2026 is the 150th anniversary of the organization of the California Society of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires in Dashaway Hall in San Francisco. September 13, 2026 is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires.
