It has been 5 months since the SCOR 2020 Annual Meeting was held online. Since then, the SCOR community continues to make progress, keeping engaged during these challenging times. Despite the travel restrictions and the lock downs, we seem to be more connected than ever through the tremendous power of remote connectivity. Now, we all have a remarkably busy agenda of online meetings.
As the world has initiated the vaccination campaigns to mitigate the effects of COVID-19, the prospect of face-to-face meetings and the re-initiation of cruises and field campaigns seems like a possibility once again, hopefully in the short term.
On the personal side, the SCOR community has not been immune to the devastating effects of COVID-19. We wish to express our solidarity with our colleagues who are suffering or have suffered the disease or have lost family members and friends. Our thoughts are with you all.

Call for 2021 POGO-SCOR Fellowships |
|
The POGO-SCOR Visiting Fellowship programme for 2021 is open for applications until the 30 April 2021. This programme is designed to promote training and capacity development, leading towards a global observation scheme for the oceans, and is aimed at scientists, technicians, graduate students (preferably PhD) and post-doctoral fellows involved in oceanographic work at centres in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

Ed Urban, former Executive Director of SCOR was honoured as a Fellow of The Oceanography Society. Ed was made a Fellow based on the outstanding service and leadership that he has provided for several decades to the oceanographic community.
Along with Ed, Emmanuel Boss from the University of Maine and Dawn Wright from ESRI were also honoured as Fellows of TOS this year. Emmanuel is currently the co-chair of Working Group #154 on Integration of Plankton-Observing Sensor Systems to Existing Global Sampling Programs (P-OBS), and a member of the Scientific Steering Group of the International Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP). Dawn served as a Nominated Member for the SCOR US National Committee.
Claudia Benitez-Nelson from the University of South Carolina was honoured with the Mentoring Award. Claudia is the Chair of the Capacity Development Committee of SCOR.

Enrique Montes is a Research Associate at the College of Marine Science, University of South Florida (USA). He studies physical and biological drivers of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen cycling in the ocean, and how these cycles affect marine ecosystems across time and space. Enrique will teach at the Universidade Federal de Espiritu Santo (Brazil) about biodiversity surveys, protocols and data management workflows with the Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER).

Julia Sigwart is a Head of the Malacology Section at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum (Germany). Her group works on the evolution of diversity in molluscs and other marine invertebrates spanning across genetics, morphology, anatomy, neurobiology, physiology, computational modelling, and experimental approaches, to understand species diversity. Julia will teach at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (Malaysia) about the role of taxonomy in ocean sciences, biodiversity resources, museum collections resources for ocean sciences.

Louise Firth is a Lecturer in Marine Ecology
at the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, University of Plymouth (UK). She works in the relationship between humans and coastal ecosystems and how this relationship has changed over time. She will teach at the South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) (South Africa) about eco-engineering of the marine built environment.

Marina Ross is a Fisheries and Aquaculture Researcher and Consultant at Acropolis, S.A. (Greece). She is a Researcher in fisheries, aquaculture and marine biology with operational and administrative expertise to develop and implement strategic and technology led initiatives. Marina will teach at Hue University (Vietnam) about fisheries and aquaculture.

Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere
Minhan Dai, professor at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Xiamen University (China) and Cliff Law, Principal Scientist in Marine Biogeochemistry at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (New Zealand) have been appointed as co-chairs of the SOLAS SSC replacing Lisa Miller (Canada).
SOLAS is planning to appoint two new members to the SSC this year to begin their terms on the 1st of January 2022. SOLAS welcomes scientific excellence expertise in i) air-sea physical interaction, ii) numerical modelling, and iii) biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur.

The Southern Ocean Observing System
The SOOS Weddell Sea and Dronning Maud Land Regional Working Group are inviting submissions for a special issue in the open access journals of Copernicus. It is an inter-journal special issue of three journals Ocean Science, Biogeosciences and The Cryosphere.
The special issue is entitled "The Weddell Sea and the ocean off Dronning Maud Land: unique oceanographic conditions shape circumpolar and global processes – a multi-disciplinary study (OS/BG/TC inter-journal SI) "

Dr. Thomas M. (Tom) Church passed away on 11 February 2021 due to complications from COVID-19. Tom was a long-term faculty member at the University of Delaware where the SCOR office is based and also a member of SCOR Working Group #80 aimed to study the role of Phase Transfer Processes in the Cycling of Trace Metals in Estuaries.

Dr. José (Pepe) Stuardo, Emeritus Professor at the University of Concepcion, Chile, passed away on the 30 March 2021. José was instrumental in establishing what are SCOR's Graduate Networks in Oceanography today and was involved for almost two decades in the ECODIM courses. He was a SCOR nominated member for Chile for many years. José made significant contributions to marine science and to malacology both in Chile and internationally and established the basis for the development of oceanography in Chile and in Latin America through the development of regional capacity programs and of the PhD program in Oceanography at the University of Concepción.
