SCOR News

In this issue: Opportunities for Early-Career Researchers

This issue of the SCOR newsletter is bursting with opportunities for involvement in SCOR's activities! Early-career researchers (ECRs) may be especially interested in summer schools and other trainings on the biogeochemistry of the Benguela upwelling system, ocean-atmosphere-climate interactions, sea-ice-atmosphere interactions, and conducting multistressor experiments. IOCCP encourages ECRs to consider their fit for the open scientific steering group positions and the SOOS Southern Ocean Air-Sea Flux Capability Working Group seeks an ECR member. Everyone is encouraged to consider submitting abstracts to sessions at the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting organized by SCOR activities. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletters and social media of the SCOR activities that align with your interest so no opportunities are missed!

In case you missed it! SCOR has a survey open inviting input from ECRs to help SCOR define its specific role in supporting ECRs. SCOR also participated in a recent ECOP Programme webinar: "Episode 21: Capacity development opportunities for ECOPs with POGO and SCOR."

SCOR Annual Meetings

Registration is open for the 2025 SCOR Annual Meeting! The meeting will be held 29-31 October in Santa Marta, Colombia with remote attendance available. A symposium will be held on 28 October to connect the SCOR community with Colombian early-career scientists (details to be distributed soon).

The SCOR Annual Meetings includes updates from SCOR activities from the past year, and allows national committees to oversee the work of SCOR, to approve new working groups, and discuss the SCOR budget for the coming year. This year, many SCOR-sponsored projects will be reflecting on past accomplishments and making plans for the future.

Working Group Products

BGC-Argo Data Products Webpage

WG 168 4D-BGC has collaborated with Biogeochemical Argo to host a new web page dedicated to BGC data products! This newly released page on the BGC-Argo website currently showcases 9 data products—and will continue to evolve—offering biogeochemical data at both global and regional scales. The parameters covered include oxygen, bio-optics, nutrients and carbon, with a variety of spatial and temporal resolutions to support a broad range of scientific applications. The new web page serves as a catalog of 4D-BGC data products, providing product descriptions, access information, and links to associated peer-reviewed publications. Thomas Jessin is gratefully acknowledged for the integration of these new pages into the BGC-Argo website.

Researchers interested in adding their own 4D-BGC product to the catalog can now follow a dedicated submission process. To be eligible, products must have an operational data link (ideally with a DOI) and a peer-reviewed publication describing the product and its development methodology. With any questions, please contact scor.wg.168@gmail.com.

For Community Review: WG 170 PRIMO Inventory of Oceanographic Physiological Assays

The PRIMO working group is sharing their Inventory of Oceanographic Physiological Assays for community review and feedback. The overarching goal of PRIMO is to develop a community and framework for co-designing novel physiological metrics that may act as ‘currency converters’ to link ‘omics datasets and biogeochemical models of the marine ecosystem. This literature review and database surveys well-established physiological metrics routinely used in biological oceanography, as well as novel metrics being developed to determine physiological rates at both the cellular and community level. It will be used to identify gaps and prioritize processes for novel physiological metric design. The tables include information about the methods (currencies, units, assumptions, uncertainties) that impact their potential readiness to be used in biogeochemical models as well as key references to facilitate discovery.

PRIMO welcomes all community feedback here.

Karl Banse (USA) was professor emeritus of oceanography at the University of Washington. He served as chair of SCOR WG 33 Phytoplankton Methods and full member of WG 17 Determination of Photosynthetic Pigments. His global field of research ranged from upwelling off India’s coast, polychaete worms of the Northeast Pacific, phytoplankton dynamics of the Northern Arabian Sea, using satellites to discern ocean cycles, the role of zooplankton in consuming phytoplankton and controlling ocean dynamics, the transport of carbon into the deep oceans, and more.

Photo of Barry Huebert

Barry Huebert (USA) was emeritus professor of oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He was a member of the first SOLAS scientific steering committee (2001-2008). Barry's main research was in the air-sea exchange of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), its role in the sulphur cycle, and its influence on climate through cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) formation. He was a pioneer in the use of eddy correlation to directly measure air-sea exchanges of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and DMS.
