Ocean Science for Sustainability
Alongside many in the scientific community, SCOR is preparing to provide the best available scientific advice to the 2025 UN Ocean Conference. A recent panel on Ocean Science for Sustainability at the Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue held alongside the International Science Council's (ISC) general assembly focused on the ocean’s role in advancing the sustainable development agenda. Marie-Alexandrine Sicre, recent SCOR Past President and ISC Fellow, highlighted the connection between SCOR's support for advancements in basic science to evidence-based decisionmaking. More recently, SCOR Executive Director Emily Twigg spoke at a briefing to the UN Group of Friends on Science for Action to provide key scientific insights to prepare UN Member States for their participation in the Conference.

Now Open! Call for Working Group Proposals
The SCOR Secretariat invites proposals for new working groups to commence activities in late 2025. SCOR typically supports 1-3 new working groups annually, pending availability of funds and the outcome of the proposal review.
Deadline for submission: 16 May 2025.
The proposal template and newly revised instructions and FAQs to help prepare the proposals can be found here.
The selection of the new SCOR working groups will take place at the 2025 SCOR Annual Meeting scheduled to take place in Santa Marta, Colombia on 29-31 October 2025.

Call for Abstracts: IMBeR Future Oceans 3 Conference
The IMBeR Synthesis and Future Planning Conference (Future Oceans 3, FO3) will be held in a hybrid format from 13–16 May 2025 in Shanghai, China, and online. The call for abstracts is now open.

SPARSE International Workshop: Surface Plastic Remote Sensing - a way forward for the detection of marine litter and floating matter, 28-30 May 2025
This three-day interdisciplinary workshop hosted by SOLAS at the University of Siena, Italy, will advance the study of marine litter and floating matter using remote sensing and space-based approaches. It welcomes researchers and experts across communities to tackle knowledge gaps in plastic pollution monitoring from land-to-sea, identifying opportunities and intervention measures for early mitigation strategies. GEOTRACES Student and Early Career Scientist Mailing List
The GEOTRACES Early Career Scientist (ECS) Committee wishes to create a mailing list of GEOTRACES students (Master and PhD) and Early Career Scientists (be no more than 10 years from PhD completion - not counting time for career interruptions), to foster collaborations and promote activities within the framework of GEOTRACES science. Publication of the OAR Ocean Carbon Observing Science Plan
The recently released NOAA Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Ocean Carbon Observing Science Plan FY25 to FY35, which outlines OAR's goals and priorities related to ocean carbon observing, received input from IOCCP in its development and refers to documents produced by IOCCP and SOLAS/IMBER.

MEDDLE Resource Utilized at IAEA Ocean Acidification Training
The MEDDLE simulator was developed by COBS (previously WG 149); the project is now focused on training and promoting MEDDLE and other resources for assessing the effects of multiple environmental factors upon organisms. MEDDLE was recently included in the second Winter School on Ocean Acidification and Multiple Stressors held at the IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories in Monaco for early-career scientists.
Event Report: IMBeR at XMAS 2025 in Xiamen
IMBeR network members and the International Project Office (IPO) actively contributed to the 7th Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Sciences (XMAS), engaging in discussions and sharing insights on ocean sustainability, capacity building, and interdisciplinary research. Event Report: Chemical, Biogeochemical, and Physical Drivers of the Coupled Polar Atmosphere and Climate: An International Polar Year 2032-33 Planning Workshop
SOLAS cosponsored a workshop co-organized by SOLAS-sponsored activities, CATCH and BEPSII (previously WG 140), among others. A total of 99 scientists and stakeholders (44 in person) from 21 countries came together to (i) present and discuss interdisciplinary ‘big picture’ science questions and challenges, and (ii) jointly identify research priorities and implementation pathways for research activities in field, laboratory and modelling leading up to and during the 5th International Polar Year (IPY) 20322033. Submissions Welcome to SOLAS Special Section: Greenhouse Gas Budgets Across the Land-Ocean Continuum

SOLAS is organising a special section in the journal Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research. This special section welcomes contributions addressing greenhouse gas cycling and emissions in coastal to offshore environments, spanning natural, climate change induced, and other anthropogenic sources/sinks (e.g. aquaculture, waste water plants, river discharge).

In Memoriam
Dr. Hind Al-Abadleh (Canada) was a professor of Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Laurier University and member of WG 167 RUSTED. As described by the memorial by Laurier University, she was a pioneering researcher in environmental science and also a dedicated mentor to young scientists. WG 167 co-chair Morgane Perron highlighted that "Her groundbreaking work on iron biogeochemistry has undoubtedly brought forward our field of science. Hind was also an inspirational figure for a number of women in STEM."
